2024 Mane 6 redesigns

The Inspiration decided to wake up and make me revisit my MLP redesigns. I have Ideas for the alicorns...

BUT FIRST, we must start where we began, with the Mane 6. I made an effort to push myself to deviate from their canon designs more than I did in my original redesign, particularly with their hair and cutie marks.

Design process/thoughts:

Rarity: Average height for a pony. Trying to draw curls caused several rage-quits before I was satisfied.

Twilight: Smollest this time. I like the headcanon that unicorn nobility look more like classical unicorns due to rarely marrying outside their class, which is why she looks so different to Rarity.

Rainbow: Wings shaped for speed, she is a lean, mean, flying machine. Very pleased with her mane and tail.

Applejack: BRAIDS. During her redesign, I realized I have Significant Beef with her canon hair. Specifically; THE PLACEMENT OF HER HAIR TIES. Hair thins out as you get further from the roots, thus, her hair ties ARE NOT SECURING a decent portion of her hair. THEREFORE, her hair will not stay secured for very long as her hair ties will quickly become loose and fall out. Braids solve this issue. Also changed the apples in her cutie mark to represent her family.

Pinkie: No longer smol, but still smaller than average. Also very pleased with her hair. Spots because I've seen them in other redesigns and I like them.

Fluttershy: Tall and voluminous hair. Wings shaped for soaring. Love how her pose came out.

Next project: probably rainbow power, but I AM NOT redrawing their hair to be big and flowy because it's just... too much. Twi will need to get taller and grow wings first though.

And then, I can start revisiting my alicorn redesigns in all their gRadiance.

God was playing a prank on me when he decided I couldn’t draw bc why am I plagued with visions of feminine Neil AND I CAN’T SHARE IT????? Pls I have SPECIFICS.

The internet is talking about Neil again. He’s prone to scandal, but this time it’s not his fault. Conservative exy fans are PISSED bc he decides to grow out his hair past shoulder length and his face is just too pretty (This is canon) so with the long hair combo they think he looks too girly (and ofc Neil claps back with a long response on twitter that basically just says Fuck You but with a Kendrick diss track level of animosity). ANYHOO

One of his favorite fits rn are these oversized overalls that Renee bought but couldn’t fit. He wears them year round with a lose t-shirt on warm days and thick sweatshirts/sweaters on cold days. You’ll often see him around campus in these overalls with his hair down or maybe pulled half up.

And the VISION I had of Neil in 2 French braids that just reach his shoulders. Dan thought it would be fun to braid his hair since it’s gotten so long and Neil genuinely loves the braids and refused to take them out. He looks adorable in his sweatshirt just chilling in the lounge after practice.

Allison teaches him how to do makeup and at first Neil finds it a pointless hassle and quickly decides he doesn’t want to waste time hiding his scars. But the eye makeup was kinda fun and he found he liked playing with the colors and glitter. And he always liked when Andrew wore eyeliner when they go to Edens so he wouldn’t mind putting on some quick makeup when he feels like it. Sometimes it completes the look :)

During after game interviews, Neil has his hair pulled up in a ponytail and he’s wearing his bandana but he still manages to get long strands of hair plastered to his face with sweat and its not not a good look…

Occasionally people spot him on the street during his runs in his usual atrocious running shorts and hair pulled back or walking casually, hair in a bun and his shorts and baggy tee combo (Neil is LUCKY those big ass jorts are trending). One day he sticks a pencil in his bun and forgets about it all day and it kinda slayed.

At banquets and formal interviews/events, Neil likes playing with makeup and wearing loose flowy pants that, when he stands with his legs together, look like a skirt.

Dan and Matt have gifted him a lot of jewelry over the years, so now Neil has a collection of rings and necklaces that he wears occasionally. He likes the look of them but they do tend to bother him if he wears them for too long. They tend to be reserved for Edens or banquets.

Andrew is getting gayer every day but he’s lowkey part of the problem. He studies Neil’s new style and buys him SO much clothes. That man spoils his not-boyfriend so much. He’ll be at Target buying like batteries or smth and then randomly come across pretty hair clips or some pants he knows Neil will love. Oh he’s definitely responsible for Neil’s entire shoe collection bc that man would wear the same ratty old sneakers every day if it weren’t for the red converse and doc martens that Andrew bought him.

Anyhoo, that’s pretty much it. It’s been almost 2 years since he’s been on the run and Neil’s realizing what his style really is. Clothes have no gender, he likes the look of his long hair (which is very different from his dad’s hair), and he’ll wear whatever the fuck he wants thank you very much.

I have something for you guys ….

here are my redesigns of the four known 7 deadly sins from the hellaverse! I’ll go in order explaining.

Here’s Lucifer — the adjustments I made were primarily to his hair and smaller features, such as giving him goat eyes, a snake themed cane, and pulling more classical and biblical inspiration forward. I love a lot of the artistic liberties in the Hellaverse designs but I do think that him being a curly-redhead is a pretty important thing that I hated to see left out of his design. I also gave him hooves and claws because I felt like he was a bit too human compared to the other sins, and wanted to make him stand out a bit more!

Next is Asmodeus! My main focus was to make it more evident which sin he represented — while I love Ozzie’s design, I felt like his color palette could be slightly more representing of the sin of lust, so I shifted toward warmer toned colors such as red and purple, while sacrificing the green and blue. I wanted to bring across more gender-fluidity since lust is something I think it is important to represent through various gendered lenses and so I went for the whole upper-half masculine lower-half feminine thing that you see here with a vest+button up and a long slit skirt! I also wanted to show more heart motifs that appear to be evident in ironically all of lust and its inhabitants besides Ozzie most of the time, and so I curved his tail and head feathers in a way that made heart shapes, and I placed Bull and Ram in a way where they’re more visible and stand out more so as their own little entities since it’s implied they’re separately sentient.

My girl Beelzebub! I LOVE her design, but I do feel like it leans heavier toward hellhound (and fox somewhat) and not enough toward her insect features, so I gave her Bee stripes as well as putting more emphasis and effort into her wings. I kept the multicolored lava lamp hair and belly but made an extra effort to highlight the gold in it to emphasize the honey/bee theme, while also placing this texture in other places such as her paws and inner-ears. I also gave her a honeycomb crown, and more loose-fitting flowy clothing to display her fun and laid-back nature, while referencing her bee themes again by adding a yellow gradient meant to mimic pollen that gets stuck on bees during their pollination process. I also gave her the funky bug eyes :) anddd sorry but I took away the mohawk, it just felt too cluttered for me to draw among other things.

Here’s Mammon! I may be biased but I love his design so much already that it was difficult to change a whole lot. However, I did find things that I wanted to change. For one, you may notice there are hat and no-hat versions of Mammon here, and that’s because I wanted to display the broken imp-like horns I gave him. In biblical mythology, Mammon often disguised himself as someone who was poor or in need so that he would be able to garner profit from pity, and I think that there is no better way to represent that than ripping off his favorite little brand-baby. I edited a lot of the black in his color palette to be gold instead, as well as adding gold to the fingertips of his gloves as a reference to Midas’ touch. I gave him more of a spider-like appearance since according to a lot of the fandom his species is fairly ambiguous, and I made his shirt (or whatever you call that lol) a bit shorter and less cluttered because I often struggled with drawing it. I also attempted to adjust his proportions a bit as I feel like the designs for the fat characters in Helluva and Hazbin often struggle a bit with proportions and it feels important to me to better represent them.

That’s all I got, but I also created my own takes on the sins that haven’t been revealed yet, which may end up being one of my next posts! I’m doing my best to stay active in the art community and this media has given me some motivation and fuel. Any input is welcome as long as we stay positive ❤️

Katelyn’s Hair Journey

If you can’t tell, I like changes in character design that are symbolic of their development.

Child/teen

Down most of the time, covering her ears, or pulled back in a high ponytail when she needed to work. Eric did his best to make sure her and her siblings had their hair taken care of, but with finances and time stretched so thin there was usually only time for basic care. Even when there was special time to get their hair done, Katelyn would prioritize her siblings over herself.

Jury

At this point Katelyn still isn’t accepting of her elven heritage, but Kasey makes a strong point that the jury is much more of a spectacle than any normal guard position, and Katelyn should show off what makes her unique. So she opts for a plait hairstyle that twists up into a bun, her ears on full display. It’s a fancier look than her earlier style, but is still something she can do without needing others.

Season 1/early season 2

Small change, but once she joins Phoenix drops she stops pinning up the braid, showing how she’s starting to let loose but her hair, just like her, is still somewhat stuck in the past.

Yggdrasil Arc

Okay so I’ve tried very hard to make Katelyn’s hairstyles realistic to her situation and comfort levels. So that meant early on, her hair care was very minimal and practical, and was focused on styles she could do by herself quickly. While she was capable of learning other ways to style her hair, she didn’t have the time to do the proper upkeep, and didn’t trust others enough to do it for her.

After her fight with Ivy, Katelyn was bedridden for quite a while and her hair wasn’t given much attention. It got quite damaged during this time, and even if they could restore it Katelyn could no longer do her own hair, at least not to the same extent as before. So she made the hard choice to cut off most of it. It was a very difficult time for her, but it was ultimately necessary for her to get a fresh start, both with her hair and life overall.

I like the idea here but I think this design came out kinda icky. Cranking up the saturation on her skin just made it way too orange, especially compared to her normal palette. Maybe she’d look better if it wasn’t right next to her other calmer color palette, but I might pull back on the saturation if I draw her in this phase again. Idk maybe because she’s a half elf or maybe because she won’t be bonded for very long she doesn’t have to be as saturated as the other elves.

Season 3

Luckily, her elven heritage makes her hair grow quicker than usual. By the start of season 3 she had regained most of her original length and it was further lengthened by putting it into box braids.

I feel they’re a good mix of practical and expressive. They can be pulled back into a ponytail for no nonsense training. Or they can be put up into a bun with hair jewelry for fancy occasions. Or anything in between. Even though it’s still braids they’re more versatile and flowy than her previous single plait, showing how’s she’s letting loose after her hard reset while still keeping her more reserved personality in mind.

Also I read a post specifically talking about native hairstyles but I also feel it applies here, where hair is believed to be an extension of oneself and braids can symbolize love or care. So I like that Katelyn shifts from one braid she does by herself, to many braids that others do for her.

I found your magical girl fashion tag while researching and I have to say, it's a huge help. So here's a question: Do you have any suggestions on what to avoid in a design? I've already read the 3 rules and some outfit reviews, but I'm curious if there are other trends you've noticed (or even pet peeves). Mine is using excessive detail to make up for a non-recognizable silhouette

I don't like setting hard rules on what not to do because I feel like I'm policing people's tastes, but yeah, I can give some pointers on my pet peeves:

Hairstyles

INVESTIGATE THEM! Don't just add braids and ponytails and bullshit just because it's more distinct than loose hair. Find references! Discover different styles! Draw a person with textured hair every once in a while, don't limit yourself to straight-and-maybe-wavy hair!

Miku Sleeves

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't hate Miku Sleeves. Miku sleeves are not the enemy. They are easy to draw and the can have a lot of different accessories, trimmings, cuts, etc. . But they are NOT infinitely versatile! They DON'T GO WELL with every style of dress! I'm not saying you should never incorporate them and I'm not saying any design that features them is bad. I'm saying that you should use them consciously. Don't add them just because the arms might feel a bit naked otherwise. At the very least understand that they might clash against an aesthetic based on formal wear. Explore other options just in case.

Tails/Trains/A-line Asymmetrical Skirts:

Similar to above I don't hate them. In fact, I love them so much I made sure my magical girlsona had one. I totally get why people want them all the time, they are badass and cool and beautiful. But if you want any of those effects you have to build the rest of the outfit around it. The general, but not absolute advice is to start them around the waist, not the hips, but whatever the case always consider how much they would weight your character down, or if the oh-so-cool flowy movement isn't dragging behind.

Layering and Construction

I know cartoon costumes don't need to be realistic. Truly. But sometimes things get so much easier if you just imagine your characters putting on their clothes instead of transforming into them. Have some mercy to the cosplayers. Avoid Disney Channel Sitcom Wardrobe Syndrome by not making cuts and adding layers to skirts and sleeves just because you can.

I'll save myself the right to add more to this if I can think of it.

I love how in the first one his head is tilted, and our perspective is that we are looking up at him, and his eyes are warm and bright, his hair is loose and flowy, and there's that little smile, he's happy

And then we see him as the Waning Moon Officer, and he's in complete contrast with his first image, we are now looking down at him while he looks up, his eyes are dull without the shine and they look cold, his hair is tied up, his lips are down turned

Honestly this is the easiest because @sodasexual's au with spirit Shiego is so ingrained in my head I can't see him much other way. My version is usually smaller than her's but very similar concept. Don't take my word for it, check it out a commission she got for the concept!

My beautiful boy Teru! I just see you as a feathered masterpiece! He looks annoyed in the sketch above because this is from a fic idea I have. Where teru gets kicked out of his body (maybe a curse maybe a spirit, I dunno, something happens).

But yes, I mean, of course Teru would be a stunning feathered being! He is after all....Teru! Above was me playing around with that in a chibi sorta-form of a spirit. His feathers kinda look like gills (oops) but I think he would always have feathers of some kind around him. I may add more in future. This is just my first run at it.

But yeah something kinda seraphim-like and trippy. Feathers coming from his head, down his back. Depending on how much power he has, he would have more or less feathers. I like the idea of the tips of the features dripping in gold or fire.

A very NOT final, more a stream of ideas doodle than anything, pleasedon'tcomeafterme I'm just having fun I know it looks nothing like him.

He may have a human-esc face or something sharper I really dunno. These are just thoughts. I have nothing that concrete yet.

Ritsu

I think he would be very similar to Shigeo actually, but his color scheme would be different. More oceanic greens and blues and his body would be shimmering like scales underwater. I don't have any doodles of this I just thought of it today. Like this color scheme

I think his spirit would look more aquatic-like than Shigeo's (I think Shigeo has some almost amphibian qualities, per the slight inspiration of the axolotl from the anime) while Ritsu is more like...deep water fish. Maybe. Again they are all just shapes and these are all just thoughts.

These last two are more off-the-cuff as I have not thought about them as deeply as the above.

Serizawa

I think Serizawa's spirit will be large and warm. A big round, fuzy......something. He may have a shape, and if it looks like anything it would be closest to a bear. He also would loose the fluff and get spikey if he gets upset I think.

No reference photo just....yeah a big bear. Sure. I like it.

Shou

Similar to Serizawa no specific animal shape but I see some chameleon aspects to him, like ever changing colors. He is kinda a flowy-fire-like spirit, where his form wouldn't be consistent and maybe a little see-through (like flames) But it would change colors from blue to greens to reds.

That's all my brain's got. I think I'll draw more Teru spirit, maybe I'll try drawing spirit Shigeo more.

Hi! Thank you so much for reaching out! I generally love any and all hijab options in games, though obviously I've got some favorites.

I'm partial to face-framing scarves which are draped over the back of the head with one flowy piece pinned next to the face. It's a style that I included in my pride maker, but here's another reference image for that:

I also love looser scarves which show a bit of hair and neck, which is a style I like to wear myself.

There's also a style called tudong/tudung in Indonesian. I'm not too familiar with it, but I sometimes see it in photos and think it looks so good. It has a way of draping the headscarf in a very prominent arch over the forehead, sometimes using a sown-in curved visor to achieve the look. This product video shows the style beginning at second 12. (It also shows the non-rectangular shape of the scarf, in case that's a useful drawing reference.)

This game Hijabi Dress-Up - Sea Breeze by elyon on meiker also has two very nicely drawn scarves.

Also, I think it's really great when games include a niqab option (face-veil). There's so many niqabis out there but they get so little representation.

Then there's also the very simple style of just taking a scarf, placing it on your head, and flipping one side over your shoulder. Like my profile pic. It's a timeless classic.

I'd also advice to include at least one "hijab friendly" outfit in your game, meaning one outfit with arms and legs covered. Hijab is more than just the scarf, it also includes covering the rest of the body, though each hijabi decides for themselves how much is right for them. (For example, some show a bit of hair/neck/short sleeves/etc., while other's opt to wear a burqa or niqab.)

1. IbisPaintX, honestly it was my first art program I ever actually used but now I'm FireAlpaca's bitch.

2.Oooh I personally really enjoy/have an easier time drawing front facing characters, profiles are so darn difficult.

3. Big bright and noticeable eyeshines i guess! Always been a thing for me, so my characters always have extra bright eyes. Or i guess eyes in general are a thing I kept from my kiddie days.

4. Crystaline stuff and MAGIC. I love them both so much but god can I not draw them for the life of me. And hair! But hair i'm starting to figure out!

5. Now that I think about it's pretty darn close id I do say so myself! Like 40 to 45% i post online (mostly on discord) and then 55 to 60% i keep to myself!

6. When I draw cats it's a lot of inspo from different warrior cats fandom big names but in general anime is my big inspo!

7.Traditional painting! I tried painting and it's just not for me but I love the way it looks and how many thing people can do with it!

8. God the amount of stories and characters that I've just left as wips in immense. I have adhd, can't finish stuff for shit.

9. Usually if it's one character it's 'character name' and then you add a number or a descriptor (aka smile or smth). Otherwise it's just like 2 or 3 words of what the drawing is. And then I group those in like 'finished art' 'wips' etc!

10.Ooh tough one. I do enjoy drawing poofy sleeved shirts or like long flowy dresses/skirts.

11.Ranges from romance music playlists to true crime and everything in between! I just need a background noise honestly. Doesn't really matter what the noise is.

12. Face. I draw floating heads on the regular.

13. Junji Ito. His style is just so freakin' interesting and his grasp on anatomy is just amazing! But, personally I'm not the biggest horror/gore fan so I don't actually read his stuff. I just find his art nifty when I see it.

16.Lineart. everyone is always sayin' stuff like 'Wow your lines are so nice and clean' and while I do agree that it's one of my strengths personally my lineart always looks rigid and wrong to me. I tend to prefer my sketches and nowadays I usally clean those up and use 'em as the lineart.

Um, I do not have any face claims for my OCs, because I would be incredibly bad at that lol. Honestly, I don't have much physical description for my characters beyond the picrews of them, since that's what I base everything off of.

What I can do is give some more relative information...

Tallest -> shortest:

Jayden (but he doesn’t look it), Julie, Colin, Leo, Rowyn, Keegan, Max, Jamie, Alix, Charlie

Who's the most fit? I guess is how I would phrase that? from left -> right:

Julie, Alix, Colin, Jayden, Charlie, Keegan, Max, Rowyn, Jamie, Leo

And I can add some stuff about their styles...

Colin: Lots of athletic wear, especially with working at the pool, since he's generally warm he wears a lot of thin athletic shirts and shorts around there, but at home he's a sweatpants and hoodies kind of guy, basically never dresses up, and his idea of that would be a t-shirt and jeans

Rowyn: Very much grew up in a house where to go in public you had to look presentable, so he always wears nicer pants, and typically a white t-shirt under a button up collared shirt, he does have some fun patterns and things mostly influenced by Colin, but he's a very clean and pristine kind of guy, at home he takes off the button up and wears a sweater/jacket over the t-shirt, only really wears comfy clothes if he's not feeling well

Jamie: Has a rainbow of sweaters in all prints and weights, but no hoodies, just those sweaters that can be worn as shirts, and comfortable pants, never jeans, he has some loose fitting t-shirts for the summer, but he's comfiest in his sweaters, either in bright jewel tones, or earthy neutrals

Keegan: Wears a button-up long-sleeve every single day, but he has quite the variety of shirts, ranging from pastels to bright colours, he doesn't wear a lot of patterns, but definitely has some options, you will never see this man in shorts

Alix: Bright colours, fun t-shirts with weird pictures/sayings, really flexible (capri pants, shorts, leggings), has a couple really loose hoodies, crop tops, loves unique outfits, as an artist appreciates the creative opportunities of outfits so is not afraid to play around with gender norms or different style choices

Jayden: Gives zero thought to his appearance, he wears what makes him comfortable, usually hoodies or plain coloured t-shirts, he's the kind of person who's been wearing the same socks for years and will never buy a different kind, he wears almost exclusively jeans

Charlie: She does care about her appearance but it doesn't really matter since she works in a daycare so she wears lots of fun bright colours and patterns, and lots of skirts and flowy dresses, she's definitely my girly-girl, who likes wearing flowers in her hair, and she would definitely wear a tutu to work

Max: Wears a lot of baggy shirts and loose pants when they want to be comfortable, but they also possess a skill for creating outfits that are delightfully androgynous so they have a lot of fun playing with skirts and overalls and crop tops, and tank tops, but they don't usually care about their outfit, because their job is virtual they wear lots of differently styled shirts (one-shoulder tops, tank tops, sweatery things, lacy-topped shirts, off shoulder shirts)

Julie: She is like a chic athletic girl, her outfits are basically all colour coordinated and cohesive, she doesn't wear skirts, but she will sometimes wear short dresses over leggings or shorts, she likes layers, loves leggings, and wears cardigans/shawls in the winter, she cares about her outfits but not in a "i want to look good" way, in a "i want to look like me" way so she really doesn't care what other people think

Hey, this is a quick introduction to the OC in this story. In my head, she's a bit of a mess, but she's my mess so I don't really stress too much about her looks. However, I know a description can sometimes help paint the picture a bit, so I hope this helps!

Her features are soft and expressive, and her skin has a natural, sun-kissed glow. She has a curvy body that carries an effortless confidence, never needing to draw attention to herself, yet always seeming to light up a room when she walks in.

Often seen in simple, comfortable clothing—flowy sundresses, denim jackets, sweaters, boots—perfect for spending time outdoors, which she loves. (Her style is molded to her mood so she doesn't have a set style.)

Her personality is warm and approachable, with a mix of strength and sensitivity that makes others feel seen and heard.

Empathetic understanding of those around her

She's always there to support others when needed, despite her own struggles in life. (which she keeps mostly to herself.)

Raised away from the confines of the ranching world, Mia has a more grounded perspective. She doesn't come from money or legacy.
