Yin Yu couldn’t get over the fact that Quan Yizhen was here.

"Yin Qianbei," Quan Yizhen addressed the dragon deity, "is this tea too hot for you?"

Yin Yu returned to the present, and just replied: "mm?"

"Your tea. You're not drinking it," the younger tiger spirit gestured at the dragon deity's cup.

"Ah, sorry. I'm not used to the company. Sometimes a cup of tea lasts the whole afternoon for me," Yin Yu replied, apologetically.

Why did I say this, he thought, immediately regretting. Now it sounds like I'm not functional. And too out of touch with this world.

Yin Yu thought a bit further, and hung his head low. How could I think I can entertain someone who is clearly alive, when I'm only barely? I'm just existing.

*gestures helplessly* The heat has melted my brain, and my hormones are demanding fluff, and I am here to do your bidding. I wrote this so fast. These two are magic, I think. So are you! :3 This also goes out with endless gratitude to @parameciam and @kazimo!

The weather that day had been unseasonably warm. Just hours after the sun had risen the heat had already become oppressive. Normally he wouldn’t have even noticed it, having grown indifferent to such ephemeral things as heat and cold, if not for his young friend.

“Yin-qianbei,” Quan Yizhen had groaned, crumpling to the ground, “it’s so hot today.”

Yin Yu looked down at him and smiled. “You climbed all the way up the mountain in this heat? You should have stayed below and saved your energy.”

Quan Yizhen shook his head. “It’s cooler up here. I wonder why that is. We’re closer to the sun up here.” He squinted up at it resentfully.

He was about to go into an explanation of natural laws, of thermals and elevation, when Quan Yizhen suddenly sat up. “I’ll bet the water’s nice and cool!” he exclaimed, his ears flicking with excitement. “Qianbei, come on!” He stood and grabbed Yin Yu’s sleeve, tugging at it gently but insistently as he headed toward the mountain lake.

Throwing off his clothes as he ran, Quan Yizhen charged into the frigid water, splashing everywhere and exclaiming at the lake’s coldness and how good it felt. Smiling at his friend’s antics, Yin Yu approached the water’s edge more calmly, intending to simply sit there, perhaps dip his feet in, but Quan Yizhen somehow convinced him to remove his heavy outer robe and step fully into the water.

Before he quite realized what was happening, they were both gliding through the water together, playfully splashing at each other, chasing and even dunking one another beneath the cool, gentle waves. Yin Yu found himself wondering if he had ever played like this. It was hard to remember. Flower petals and leaves were scattered across the lake’s surface: Yin Yu would gently pluck the ones that caught in Quan Yizhen’s curly hair; with a laugh, Quan Yizhen pulled away a large leaf that had managed to wrap itself around one of Yin Yu’s horns.

Eventually they climbed out and sat together on a high stone under an ancient tree, the dappled sunlight around them now a welcome warmth after their cold swim. The contrast was something Yin Yu hadn’t appreciated in a long time. Quan Yizhen quickly fell asleep right beside him, close enough to touch. Yin Yu did so, absently running his fingers along his tight braids, gently rubbing the soft fur of his ears. Then he heard a rumbling sound coming from the tiger spirit’s chest. He thought at first that Quan Yizhen was growling with displeasure and his hand paused instinctively. But then he saw the contented expression on his sleeping face and realized that his friend was purring.

Quan Yizhen shifted in his sleep, closer to Yin Yu who still sat very still, until his head was nearly resting in the dragon deity’s lap.

Everything suddenly felt so vivid: Yin Yu noticed the light breeze in the branches above them; the heat coming from the stone beneath them; the dampness of Quan Yizhen’s hair; his pulse as Yin Yu gently scratched his chin; the way his deep, steady breathing affected Yin Yu’s own. For a brief, wonderful moment he felt part of the world again.

Then Quan Yizhen blinked awake, leaning his face into Yin Yu’s palm. “Qianbei…?” he mumbled quizzically.

Yin Yu pulled his hand away. “I woke you,” he said gently. “I’m sorry.” He hesitated. “I should have asked before touching you.”

“S’okay,” Quan Yizhen replied, yawning widely. “Felt good.” He nuzzled sleepily against Yin Yu, closing his eyes again.

He cautiously put a hand back to Quan Yizhen’s head, threading his fingers into his thick, damp curls, and was rewarded with more purring when he gently began to scratch near the base of his ponytail. He was soon lulled to sleep by the slow swaying of Quan Yizhen’s striped tail.

They slept through the heat of the day. And yet somehow the idleness, spent together, felt more fulfilling than many productive days Yin Yu had spent on his own.

I just wanted to tell you I absolutely love how you draw Yin Yu with his one sleeve open to show the scar on his wrist. It squeezes my heart in the best way.

This is the official blog for the 2025 TGCF fan event, “Yin Yu Appreciation Week!” The official date is July 6th-12th, and lasts 7 days. I will only host the event on Tumblr and will create a collection for AO3. You are welcome to post your own works on other platforms, but I am one person with a full-time job and can’t promise to run this event on Twitter too (also I have a personal gripe with Twitter anyway—don’t ask)
