I love media that is deeply American but also kinda odd/scary. Supernatural (my love), Welcome to Night Vale (I'm not done with you, but I love your vibes), and Lord Huron, especially Vide Noir (you're new). There are definitely others that fit this, but these are the ones I'm enjoying now. I don't love America in a gun god and glory way, but man, am I sucker for the American urge to leave your hometown but also love it more than anything.

Welcome to Night Vale and The Magnus Archives made me realize just how much I want magic to stay sporadic and mysterious. I really liked the early days of both podcasts but once everything turns weird and becomes the norm I lose interest. They didn’t turn bad, they just turned out to be a type of story I personally isn’t into.
I think that’s why I like Lord of The Rings but could never get into Harry Potter. Yes, LoTR is a fantasy world but actual magic is still rare and awe inspiring. In Harry Potter people use magic to wash the dishes.
The best example I can think of from the top of my head is The X Files. They managed to raise the stakes and give us a little more info but the weirdness never turned mundane. It stayed sporadic and mysterious the whole way through.
This is of course just a personal preference but my friend who doesn’t share it and still loves both podcasts got it when they said “When the weird becomes mundane it just turns into a drama using different words” I love how it took someone who doesn’t feel the same way I do about magic in fiction to put my thoughts perfectly into words.
I’d actually really like to hear how you feel about magic and weirdness in fiction. What level does it take to grab your attention and does it ever get too much and become boring or are all levels of magic/weirdness good in your book?

“Refill my cup, daughter.”
[Image Description: a colored drawing of Petyr Baelish with Sansa Stark as Alayne Stone. Baelish sits in a chair, apparently eating dinner while Alayne carries a clay pitcher. Baelish reaches out and grabs her arm, catching her attention as she walks by.
Baelish wears a high-collared dark purple doublet trimmed with grey fur at the collar and some buttons going down his throat. Over this he wears a minty-teal tunic and a grey cloak pinned with a silver mockingbird. His face is in profile. He appears to be talking amiably. He is holding Alayne’s arm just above the elbow.
Alayne wears a dark green dress, a deep sky blue apron with the mockingbird Baelish sigil on it, and a white veil covering her hair, which is in two long twist-plaits. She wears golden hoop earrings, a gold choker with a blue stone pendant, a gold ring, a red and blue belt, and hanging from her belt a gold chain with a tiny golden cage hanging from it. She looks down at Baelish, appearing as if she’s about to speak, looking worried or tired. She holds a red clay pitcher with both hands.
Baelish’s wine cup is silver edged in gold, thoroughly decorated with gemstones. His spoon is silver with blue stones, his plate is white porcelain with blue at the border. His chair has Arryn symbols on it. The tablecloth is a deep sky blue. The background is a bluish purple gradient, bluer on Alayne’s side, more purple on Baelish’s. /End ID.]

𝐇𝐨𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐧 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐸𝑦𝑟𝑖𝑒
𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐: "As High as Honor" 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒍: is a sky-blue falcon soaring upwards, outlined against a white moon on a sky-blue field. 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒔: darker hair, lighter skin, and gray or darker eyes with strong Andal traits.
𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑨𝒓𝒓𝒚𝒏 𝒊𝒔 one of the Great noble Houses of the Seven Kingdoms. Their seat is the Eyrie - which is considered impregnable. Their other holding is their Winter castle; the Gates of the Moon (which was once their main seat).
Both castles are next to the Giant's Lance, the tallest mountain in the Vale with the Gates of the Moon in front and the Eyrie further back, nearing the top.
The Arryns have many distant relatives throughout the Vale. However, they are much poorer, the exception are the Arryns of Gulltown. An example is Petyr Baelish - although lesser they are still proud of their name and heritage.
The founder of House Arryn was Ser Artys Arryn, known as the Falcon Knight, and it was founded by the Coming of the Andals. King Roland I Arryn, the grandson of Ser Artys and fourth Arryn king, began the process of building the Eyrie.
The First Men who did not accept Artys as their king were forced into the Mountains of the Moon, becoming the Vale mountain clans.
During the Conquest, the Arryn and Targaryen fleets fought in a battle in the waters off Gulltown, which resulted in the destruction of the Targaryen fleet and the death of its commanding officer, Daemon Velaryon. Visenya Targaryen, on her dragon Vhagar, burned the Arryn fleet in response.
Visenya was tasked with securing the Vale. So, Visenya flew on Vhagar to obtain the surrender of the Vale of Arryn. When Sharra Arryn, the Queen Regent of the Vale, returned to the Eyrie she found her son sitting on Visenya's lap asking if he could ride the dragon with her. Once Sharra yielded and bent the knee, Ronnel flew twice with Visenya and Vhagar.
The Arryns have since remained Defenders of the Vale and Wardens of the East for the Iron Throne.

Faramir and Eowyn Things that give me feels
Faramir teaching her how to read
Eowyn teaching him the speech of the Rohirrim
Their bilingual babies
Eowyn teaching their children riding before they can walk
Faramir reading to them in the womb
Bedtime stories split between tales of Gondor and songs of the Mark
Faramir making sure they know about their brave uncle Boromir
Eowyn taking them to the tomb of Theoden on a trip to see their uncle in Rohan and telling them of their brave grandfather and of his son Theodred who fell before the war
Eowyn and Faramir making sure their children never feel neglected like they had to
The restoration of Ithilien and cleansing of the Morgul Vale
The chance that maybe by the end of their lives a new fair work had replaced Minas Ithil perhaps a garden since no longer was a tower of guard needed
Faramir outliving Eowyn because he is of almost pure Numenorean descent
Naming works started in her life and finished after her death in her honor
Just all the things that they would achieve together and how beautiful they would make the world and how good of parents they would be.
Also Beregond being the most loyal bodyguard ever and probably part time baby sitter and his wife likely becoming the lady in waiting to Eowyn
