well, I can't say I expected the new chapter to feature Idia (metaphorically) going to (metaphorical) hell, getting a pep talk from his (metaphorical) Phantom brother which helps him finally move on once and for all from his brother's death, and (metaphorically) overblotting again to fight his way back out of (metaphorical) hell, only to have his darkest fear (non-metaphorically) come true when his mom goes through his computer and finds all his secret files. but I am glad it did!

also this is all a flashback for the purpose of explaining to our group what the heck is going on (whether or not any of it is getting through is another matter)

Okay so I haven't listened to the book in the past couple days but there's this line from one of Zach's chapters that I can't stop thinking about cause it's like "good God that's so fucked" he says something along the lines of "I might have to work to transition from cute to hot but Rubens already there" and potentially in the same line but also maybe not cause I don't remember he says something close to "I have to make the switch from cute to hot if I want to have a career" which is like? Like it's so gross dude. Zach and Angel are barely 18 like tf- like yeah sex sells but Jesus christ what in the fuck. And then like the internalized issues?? Like it's not quite the same vein it's similar tho. I've always been "the fat kid" since I was in elementary school and let me tell you comparing your body to your friends' is literally the quickest way to start resenting them and hating yourself. Quite literally chorus was kinda pitting them against each other and started instilling body image issues in very impressionable teenagers and then was like *surprised Pikachu face* when they were all starting to show signs of depression and anxiety and started fighting and started doing dumb shit and drugs to try and cope.

hm. i feel like I'm not unhinged enough for the past few days. here's my old-but-reworked omegaverse headcanon tier list.

Okay... So... I had this EAH idea like 2 months ago and today it came back, so here we go:

Imagine if some huge sports game event happened in Ever After High, so both Cerise and Ramona are gonna participate and compete against each other...

Then Mr. Bad Wolf is 100% convinced that the victory is in the bag for Cerise, leaning on the fact that he often watches her training and trying hard closely, meanwhile Red Riding Hood believes in the potential of both of her daughters, so she thinks Bad Wolf is being pretty pretentious, unfair and rash in bet all his chips at Cerise over Ramona.

Then the secret married parents place a bet over believing the child with the opposite destiny to their can and will win and so, to assure it, themselves are allowed to train said daughters.

Then it could be just a comic relief and a secondary story, using the fact that "Wow the Bad Wolf is training the next Little Red Riding Hood and the Red Riding Hood is training the next Big Bad Wolf, what weird and ironic!" And so, when the secret couple is asked on why they are doing that, they answer all awkwardly something like "If my daughter can't win this competition for herself, then she's not ready for her destiny!" "I am actually preparing my daughter in the end!"

As well as this story could have some or a lot of dramatic points, with the rivalry between the girls growing at every match while the parents are constantly teasing each other about who was right and which daughter will accomplish more victories, or so the both daughters growing uncomfortable with this situation although they are loving this bonding moment with their parents...

Then in the final game, the old and classic racing, maybe only between these two, maybe with other competitors, the secret is revealed... Their rivalry is quite strong now, them both are determined to win, so in the heat of their emotions something happens...

Maybe Cerise awaken her wolf form before Ramona and then win the race before realize what just happened...

Maybe Cerise and Ramona both awaken their wolf forms (in the case of Ramone haven't learned to transform yet, I don't know how it works...) in a scenario where their rivalry is quite high and so they're skittish with each other as never before and can't stop teasing each other, then the race is interrupted because we have now two uncontrolled wolf teenagers wildly fighting and in this moment the parents realizes how wrong they were...

Or maybe, in a scenario where them both are immensely uncomfortable with all this competition between their parents and themselves actually got quite closer, but yet want win... It happens that this day is cloudy and windy, so Cerise is hesitating to not let her hood fall and reveal her ears, so before the race Ramona keeps teasing her because she can't reach full speed while holding the hood, but Cerise is not willing to give up and just run with the head down, but yet Ramona notices it's preventing her of reach her fullest and remarks still in a provocative tone saying she could run faster than that, all smirking because Cerise would never risk reveal the secret... And then Cerise does... The two sisters have their fiercest race (maybe ending in a tie, maybe ending with Cerise's victory, who knows) but so the realization hits and them both stares blankly at each other as everyone just starts to spot Cerise's ears.

And that's the idea.

How bad do you think John Ashdown Hill is? He seems to have a particular fondness for historical women's promiscuous stories

Oh, I think he's incredibly bad. I think his works are obviously and extremely misogynist unless you have Ricardian goggles welded onto your face. I do not take him seriously as a historian. I do not think he has written anything worth reading. I think he was a renowned Ricardian crank who made incredibly specious and misleading arguments about history.

Come on, am I supposed to take a man who subtitles his biography of Elizabeth Woodville "Edward IV's Chief Mistress and the Pink Queen" and accuses of her being a serial killer seriously as a historian? Or not think there's something incredibly weird about titling a chapter in a biography of Cecily Neville "Through The Menopause"? Should I take seriously a historian who cites a blog with the username [slur]magicspells in a publication? Am I not supposed to see the cognitive dissonance in arguing that Eleanor Talbot and Edward IV were absolutely, positively married and their marriage should be taken just as seriously as Catherine of Valois and Owen Tudor's marriage which by the way totally didn't happen and we need to rename the Tudor Dynasty because they were all secret Beauforts?

It's true Ashdown-Hill tracked Richard III's mitochondrial DNA down into the present and was very active in getting Richard's burial rediscovered. He was also a tenacious, if incredibly biased, researcher and had resources to throw at his pet projects. This is obviously impressive. It's also true that when he presented his genealogical research to the University of Leicester, he did not provide any evidence of his research so they had to redo his research to ensure they were DNA-testing the right people. There's also a blogpost he wrote where he accuses the Church of England of a conspiracy because they won't let him exhume any Plantagenets to DNA test them and basically admits to harassing a worker at Historic England after they refused to let him dig up the heritage-listed Clare Priory in Suffolk in order to locate and DNA test the remains of Lionel, Duke of Clarence. They refused him permission because, by his own admission, he didn't know where in the priory Lionel was buried and excavation would have disturbed countless other burials and there was a good chance they wouldn't even know they had found Lionel's remains if they found them.

Which is incredibly ironic given the demands he and the rest of Looking for Richard team made after Richard III's remains were identified. I don't have the energy or brainpower to get into that unholy mess but I recommend looking up Mike Pitts's blogposts about that. It is very much a case of "one standard for the sainted Richard, who is Special, and the rest are just muck beneath our feet and our quest to clear Richard's name".

Ok so like. Film adaptations of books are not universally bad things on principle. I’m definitely not saying that it’s impossible to produce a good one. But at the same time, film and the written word are different mediums that aren’t necessarily suited to telling stories in the same way.

For example, in a book, especially a highly character driven one, you get to directly see and read a lot of a character’s thoughts. And this has a huge impact on your experience of the story. And sure, you can convey this in a somewhat similar way with a voice over in a film adaptation, but depending on the scene being adapted, this doesn’t always work great or feel natural.

And that’s not a bad thing. It just means that it doesn’t translate to film well because film is a different medium that tells stories in a different way. And there certainly are books that translate well to film. But to be honest? A lot don’t. Especially not in a way that even comes close to touching the original that it is based off of. And that’s fine. Plenty of amazing movies and TV shows wouldn’t translate well into books and most people wouldn’t really want or expect them to.

So no. I really don’t think that “achieving” a film adaptation should be seen as a goal the way it seems to be for a lot of books and I think that seeing this as a goal is often doing a huge disservice to the original work. I think that books that are well served by film adaptations are the exception, not the rule, and that most of the drive to produce film adaptations of popular books is driven by the urge to squeeze every last possible bit of profit out of every single creative idea ever rather than like. I don’t know. Actual appreciation for the source material and a genuine wish to understand it in a different light.
