crying pissing throwing up spaghetti spilling out my pockets because my besties can't come to powerwolf concert with me next week and i have to resell the tickets
can't fault them of course but we were looking forward to it for a whole year now and it was the beacon of light after the shitstorm of these past months
i barely talk to anyone anymore because of Overwhelmed but these two are part of the handful of people i so see on a weekly basis i was so hyped to do a concert with friends. i guess we have different ways of getting overwhelmed. i can see how hours of train plus worrying about finding a place to sleep plus huge crowds of people plus the noise plus parisians isn't very attractive when you also have shit going on. for some people at least. i'm just built different concerts are my natural habitat.
#longing for an eventual time where the squad is all in a good place in life#then. we will unleash our Full Power (do fun stuff together like normal people)

Levi with a crush on reader
LEVI CRUSHING ON YOU [headcanons]
A/N: I'm sorry it took me this long, I hope you like it and thank you so much for taking the time to request something from me!! c:
Warnings: none
Wordcount: 434
⥠He is very subtle about it, and even would start to avoid you to the point where you might think he hates you, but it's quite the oposite.
⥠He gets really nervous around you (thatâs the reason behind why he started to avoid you) canât even look at you fearing that he might start stuttering, if he is forced to interact with you per say in a meeting where thereâs higher ups and has to talk to you he looks right behind you instead of directly in your eyes or wonât even bother to look at your direction prettending to fix the papers in front of him.
⥠After a while, as you interact more with him the more comfortable he gets around you, but only when he is lucky enough to spend some time alone with you, the only way he knows how to flirt is teasing you, loves to hear the smartass comebacks that you come up with. He even laughs at your jokes (sometimes) and says some himself so he can make you laugh.
⥠As time goes by, and you both get closer, he is still subtle about his crush on you, it has worsened ever since he got to know you better. He is practically head over heels in love with you at this point.
⥠His way of letting you know that you are someone special to him and not like the rest is by caring about you, double checking if your horse seat straps are well fastened and placed, making sure that you ate all your meals every day, that your odm gear is on properly, that you are covered and warm when it's cold.
⥠When out in expeditions he likes having you close next to him, he even asked the higher ups if you could be changed to his squad so he can have one thing less to worry about knowing that you are right there, safe, by his side.
⥠You have this habit that he absolutely loves, you don't know that he looks up to it every single day, it's the highlight of his days. Being an early bird just like him when you make it to the dinning hall to get breakfast it's only Levi and you, so the first thing he sees every morning it's you, smiling at him as you greet him good morning. Same thing at night, usually you both stay up late drinking a cup of tea and chatting, so your soft smile an you wishing him a good night, is the last thing he sees at night before heading to his bedroom and eventually falling asleep.

Mine friendo, one, I dunno why it reblogged three times and I do not take any of that back, and two, I need your take on a Nikto kitter cause I wanna, with permission, write a piece with your au đ if it's okay
Okay so, I had to wait until I got home for this but PLEASE IT'S OKAY TO WRITE FOR THIS OH MY GOSH PLEASE DO. All I ask is a tag as credit please. I mean, it's not really my au, it's just appreciated. It's not necessary. What is necessary is tagging me so I can read it! I want to read this!!!
TW: mentions of torture, violence, recovering from grievous wounds
However, your other part of your ask might lead to a bit of a tragedy. See, when Kortac created their task force of cat hybrids, they were trying to use the parts of cats that make perfect hunters to make their soldiers. Silent, fast, agile, strong, excellent eyesight under low light conditions, enhanced smell and hearing, capable of mimicry, able to endure hot and cold environments. Above all, they were to be loyal. So, they used the domestic cat to keep their soldiers domesticated enough to keep them under their thumb.
Nikto was among the first used. He was the first successful prototype. He was perfect! He was loved for his skills as a soldier, and he was loved as being an affectionate domesticated cat. Nikto was adored.
Unfortunately, KorTac had funding cuts and all the perfect soldiers they made had two choices: be let free, or be euthanized. The head of the lab was a soft-hearted man, and he insisted that the cats were to be set free. When the order went through that the cats were to be euthanized regardless, he panicked and smuggled the cats out to a city where he let them free. He begged them to forgive him as he let them go.
The cats all gathered together to face the harshness of city life. Not all of them made it, but most managed. They were homeless cats, homeless humans. They were lost and scared, but they persevered.
Eventually, some of the cats started to get adopted. Nikto watched as his brothers and sisters in arms managed to find places to stay and hide in their cat forms. He saw how wonderfully things worked out for them. Surely, he could find a happy home too, right?
So Nikto let himself be adopted by someone. He was picked up by a teenager with his friend and brought back to a shed. There, Nikto was forced to endure the worst of human behaviour.
The teens learned of a way to make money online. A strange way, but an easy way. It made good money, so they heard. It was easy, as long as you could do it.
Nikto was tortured for hours and hours in that shed. Being a stray for so long, he was too hungry and weak to be able to shift and defend himself. Instead, he was forced to endure horrors I hate to repeat.
When the teens figured that Nikto was dead, they put him in a can and kicked it over into a puddle of some leftover household acid, remains of what they'd used on him previous. Too weak to move, Nikto accepted his fate and closed his eyes.
He was woken up later by an animal trying to nibble at him. Parts of his body fell off as he heaved himself out of the puddle. He felt himself shake, he thought this was the end. But, he needed to warn the others. He couldn't let them suffer a fate like this.
Nikto hauled himself through the streets. He pushed through back alleys to get back to the city, and back to where his squad mates lived. When he arrived back, they did their best to care for him, but they didn't think Nikto would make it through the night.
But he did.
Nikto lived the next day, and then the next day, then the next and then the next day. Every day he lived was a miracle. Hutch, Roze and Askel poured their heart and souls into Nikto, and too their amazement, Nikto began to recover.
His skin started to grow back, his eyes fluttered open. His breathign relaxed, he started to talk.
And talk he did! He told them all about the humans. He warned them all. He made them all swear to protect themselves, to never let themselves fall into the wrong hands again. He made them swear to be strong, to always be healthy enough to shift into human forms. They promised, and they followed his word.
To this day, Nikto feels his heart drop when he hears someone has been adopted. He's made an initiative where each time one of their kin are adopted, another will follow them home to ensure they go to a safe home. They always make sure.
Nikto is still afraid of humans. It doesn't help that nobody really wants to adopt a cat like him... He's covered in scars now, scars that transfer to his human form. Despite how horrible he looks in his cat form, he'll stay in that form to avoid showing his human face. He's never forgotten the fear he felt when he saw his own eye staring back at him from within a fleshy socket, surrounded by redness and folds of scar tissue. He won't ever let anyone see his human face again, he swears by this.
Sometimes, someone will be foolish enough to ask Nikto if he'd consider trying to get adopted again. Nikto never says anything. He never has to. The way the whole room goes silent speaks volumes.
When he leaves them to stew in their own pity and misery, he'll think about what they said. He'll consider their words. A part of him wants to be adopted. He wants a warm, happy home. One like back at KorTac. He's been told KorTac was horrible, but when he was in the cage he had a roof over his head and three meals a day. He didn't go hungry, he didn't shiver at night. He was always safe.
Nikto, despite it all, still wants a home. Is he ready yet to find a human to trust? He doesn't know. He doesn't think he'll ever be ready, but he reminds himself that nobody is ever ready for change. It just happens. One day, a human will find him and love him for who he is, he holds onto that hope dearly.
Here's a quick ref of Nikto for you guys at home. Sadly, he can't really wear a mask in cat form, but at least he has a mask in human form. Still, despite how rough he looks, he still prefers living as a scarred cat than having to face his human form in the mirror again.
Oh, and as for the video? The one those teens made to make hundreds of thousands of dollars? The one that would make them filthy rich?
It made $97 USD.

(most of) The sewer squad!
Surprisingly, Clay and Croc were super fun for me to color. Rat was the one that kicked my ass this time
(P.S. sorry about the lore being so long down there)
Waylon Jones was originally born in Louisiana. He was born into a relatively low income but very big, very loving family. He was also born with Epidermolytic Ichthyosis, which caused patches of his skin to blister or thicken, sort of like scales. This would be the first thing he'd be bullied for as a child, and it would only grow worse as he went through school and his undiagnosed ADHD and dyslexia would make it ten times harder for him. He would eventually decide to drop out of school, both because of his learning difficulties and the bullying.
One thing Waylon had always loved was boxing. His father had taught him and all of his siblings the basics of boxing, and Waylon was one of the ones who really took a shining to it. It helped that he was a naturally bulky guy who could put on muscle pretty easily. So now that he was out of school, he decided to put his free time towards participating in amateur boxing matches. It didn't rake in very much money, and usually took place in some guy's backyard or a junkyard, but he thought it was a lot of fun - and, most of all, he was good at it.
He made the choice to move to Gotham after he'd collected enough money to start a life somewhere else. He loved his family, and it hurt to move away from them, but a big city like Gotham provided more opportunity than backyard brawling. And indeed, it did! He graduated from probably illegal homemade boxing matches to actual, professional matches - still nothing above amateur, but it was something, and it made a lot more money!
It was during this time when he'd gain the nickname Killer Croc, from a combination of his skin condition, how big he was, and where he'd been born. (He didn't actually kill anyone though, he was a sweetie. He's just killer at boxing).
Things started going downhill for him when he finally won enough matches to go up against another relatively popular name in the amateur boxing league. This opponent, not wanting to lose against what was still a fresh face in Gotham, conspired to cheat in order to win. Because it's Gotham, and anyone can be made to look the other way, no one caught the man as he mixed plaster of Paris with his hand wraps (which hardens into something similar to concrete) before the match.
Safe to say, Waylon lost the fight pretty badly. While he would have been a good sport about it, he knew that who he'd fought had cheated, and he was pissed. As soon as he was out of the hospital, and his face was healed enough for it, he caught the other boxer as he was leaving the gym. He tried to convince him to admit that he had cheated and forfeit his win, but they'd end up getting into an argument that'd turn physical when he tried to punch Waylon.
When the cops arrived, instead of breaking up the both of them and taking them both in, they instead arrested just Waylon. Because the other boxer chose to press charges, Waylon was shipped off to BlackGate Penitentiary after a hasty trial. But he didn't stay there for very long.
Doctor Hugo Strange, head of Arkham Asylum, had followed Waylon's arrest closely in the news. He took an interest in the boxer specifically because of the irony of his nickname. Strange would go on to convince the superintendent of BlackGate that Waylon was unfit to be housed in a regular prison because of how dangerous he might be - Arkham would be a much better fit for him.
Strange promised Waylon that being in an asylum would greatly reduce how long he'd have to spend incarcerated, as he could get out of an asylum when he was proven "sane". But Waylon was given a cell in the lowest pits of Arkham - in the basement, where Strange made his monsters. And he would become the living test subject for what would become Kirk Langstrom's own bat-serum; his nickname, Killer Croc, once a source of pride, becoming a cruel prediction of what he'd become.
Unlike Kirk, however, Waylon is permanently trapped in this new form; shunned from society and now living as Gotham's monster in the sewers. Forever a Killer Croc.
??? (Nickname: Rat/Rats) was born in....Well, actually, no one really knows where it came from. Rats was there the first time Waylon escaped into the sewers, and it seemed it'd been there a long time before that, too.
Rats is like a cryptid to most of the Gotham population. But, like, the kind of cryptid where everyone knows it's real, you just don't encounter it that often. 12 year old rat child in the sewers? Yeah, everyone knows about that
They're shy, unnerving, and tend to be nonspeaking, their only appearances to most of the public coming from brief glimpses in the sewers or, occasionally, guiding people lost within them back out.
To the rogues, though, Ratcatcher is a source of information. It seems to know far more than it should, due to communication with the all-seeing eyes of it's many rats. But how much it's willing to help depends on how much it trusts you, which is usually not very much at all.
And if they don't want to talk to you, then Waylon will be sure to escort you quickly out of the sewers.
(Fun fact: Rats communicates mostly in ASL!)
Basil Karlo was born and raised in Gotham. A lover of performance from the moment he could join the theatre club in school, he was dead set on pursuing an acting career after he graduated from college. His first experiences were small background roles or roles in commercials, but even then directors could see the acting potential lurking within him.
Small roles grew into more major roles, as they grew from background actor, to minor actor, to eventually starring in major roles. And they were a popular guy! Pretty face, charming voice, they became Gotham's own star!
In one of these movie roles, Basil would grow very close to one of his co-stars. Their relationship would move very quickly from friendship to romance, as it does when you work so closely with someone. It might have even moved a little too fast, as they decided to get married the moment they returned to America from their filming location. She moved into his home in Gotham, and things were good, for a little while.
But a lot of cast romances end up not working out, and this was one of those cases. Basil and his wife began to drift apart, focusing on their own careers and neglecting one another in the process. Their relationship began to decay, and with the nature of Basil's career, there began to be...people on the side.
They thought he kept these escapades a secret. They did everything they could to not let their wife or the public know about their cheating.
Of course, this was a pipedream.
This all happened around the time J's Red Hood Gang was at their peak. They figured out Basil's secret, gathered material, and would present the evidence to Basil himself. To keep their secret safe, Basil was forced under the Red Hood.
Basil...did not take well to what he had to do as a Red Hood. But he was desperate to save face amongst the well-to-do of Gotham, so he continued doing the bidding of J and her gaggle for a good while.
Until the day, with no interference from the Red Hoods, their wife left them. She had apparently been contacted by one of Basil's partners, and now they were going to leak that to the press during the divorce proceedings.
Basil's life was ruined. His reputation was in shambles, and he was doing more work for criminals than directors. But he decided he was going to change that. What was the point of working as a Red Hood if they had no way to blackmail him anymore?
So they attempted to leave. They confronted J and demanded that she let them go, and without waiting for her response, left.
Red Hoods were waiting at their home when they got back there. They kidnapped them, dragged them to Ace Chemicals, and proceeded to pour an experimental chemical onto their face. This chemical made flesh like clayâmoldable, which the Hoods used to their advantage as they toyed with Basil's face. Morphing it into different shapes and expressions for their own amusement.
When they were done, they dragged him to the vat where they were developing that chemical and threw him into it, expecting him to die.
Unfortunately for Basil, they did not.

Finally thought of some more headcannon ideas! So hereâs my hcâs for who in the Bucci Squad is good at cooking!
Bucci Squad cooking + bonus cooking for their S/O or crush!
Bucciarati:
Of course mother can cook
For real though, heâs one of the best cooks in the group.
I can imagine a young Bruno learning how to cook with his mother, and after she decided to leave it was something he kept up and just kept getting better at
Could also see him going out of his way to cook food for homeless or elderly people around the city just because he loves helping others so much.
He loves cooking for the rest of the squad and likes to have nights where everyone gets together and he can just make a bunch of different dishes and have a great time with his friends. He always make sure that everyone has at least one of their favourite dishes on the table, even if it means spending the entire day in the kitchen
When he has a crush or is in a relationship, he loves cooking for them and secretly learning their favourite dishes so he can surprise them with a romantic dinner. Candles, red roses, fancy wine and music, the whole classic dinner date thing.
Excellent cook, but not as good at baking. Still good though.
Mista:
This man burns water
Heâs so bad. He tried to help Bucciarati once when everyone was supposed to come over and Bucciarati had to hide himself gagging. He then tried his best to fix the dish while Mista got distracted so he didnât have to throw it out and make him feel badâŚ
âŚbecause of this, Mista thinks heâs a great cook.
Even when he makes something bad, heâll try it and think itâs fineâŚI imagine heâs like Joey from Friends and will literally just eat anything
He cannot bake either, at all. Even if someone hands him one of those tubes of the pillsbury premade dough things that you literally just have to place on a pan, he will burn them
The first time he tried to cook for his s/o or crush he set the oven on fire
Proceeded to serve the meal after spraying everything with a fire extinguisher
They ended up ordering take out that night, but s/o or crush says next time theyâll help him because they can see how hard he was trying :)
Narancia:
Okay heâs still pretty bad but surprisingly not as bad as Mista
Heâs not great with measurements and following instructions because he doesnât read, so he kinda learned over the years what works and what doesnât
He still often gets distracted or will put his headphones on and miss the timer, so he often overcooks or burns thingsâŚbut every once in a while he actually comes up with something edible
He likes trying to help Bucciarati in the kitchen but gets frustrated easily and is known to just be like âfuck thisâ and go off and listen to music somewhere
He actually tries to bake for his s/o / crush the first time and the cookies look really good!
Until they take a bite and they realize he accidentally used salt instead of sugarâŚs/o / crush laughs it off and they make another batch together that actually turn out pretty good :)
Will leave the kitchen a mess for days after heâs done if nobody makes/helps him clean up
Abbacchio:
Boy can COOK
He actually might be better than BucciaratiâŚ
But he doesnât do it for everyone that often because he doesnât like drawing the attention to himself. When he helps Bruno in the kitchen, everyone just kinda assumes that Bruno did most of the work. He doesnât really mind as long as he knows deep down that people are enjoying what he made, he doesnât care about being praised for it.
If the others try to help in the kitchen he gets annoyed and just starts drinking wine.
Will eventually get so fed up that he goes to the dining room table and continues to sip his wine while he listens to all the chaos going on in the kitchen so he doesnât lose his shit at everyone (mostly Mista and Narancia)
When he first cooks for his s/o or crush he actually tries to pretend that Bruno made it or that he got takeout from a fancy restaurant âthis isnât even a date, shut up and eat.â
Obviously s/o crush can tell he made it. He forgot to clean up around the stove because he was actually panicking about them coming over. S/o/crush wonât out him but wonât stop going on about how DELICIOUS the food isâŚ
âŚHe lied, he loves the praise.
Fugo:
Heâs actually a pretty decent cook!
Heâs good at following instructions, so heâs naturally just good at following recipes. What idiot couldnât follow a bookâŚ.
âŚOh. Yeah heâs not allowed in the kitchen when Narancia is there because once he got so angry at him that he broke a wine glass over his head.
When Narancia (and Mista tbh) arenât there though, he really enjoys helping Bruno in the kitchen. Heâs not on the same level as him or Abbacchio, but at least everything he makes ends up tasting good.
I feel like he would be even better at baking actually, because I find baking tends to use a lot more numbers and measuring out ingredients to exact numbers. Itâs like science and Fugo loves that.
The first time his S/o or crush tastes his cooking or baking, itâs actually because he brought it âfor the squadâ. Heâs too embarrassed to admit that he just wanted to see if theyâd enjoy what he made. He gets all flustered when they tell him how good it is and leaves the room. But then starts bringing stuff almost every week for them to try.
Giorno:
I feel like heâs on the same level or a little better than FugoâŚ
He always had to kinda take care of himself, so naturally he learned to cook for himself as well
Unlike Fugo, he doesnât go by the book as much. He just picked up from restaurants and over time learned what worked together
He does also enjoy baking sometimes because he has a bit of a sweet tooth, but just basic things like cookies, brownies, etc.
He doesnât really help Bucciarati in the kitchen because Abbacchio just glares at him the whole time. Leone hates that heâs actually okay at cooking. Can this kid just be bad at something wtf.
If Abbacchio does get fed up and goes off to sulk somewhere, he doesnât mind stepping in to help out though
When cooking for an s/o or crush, he has a similar approach to Bucciarati. He likes to make it romantic but in a more light-hearted way? Like he prefers more upbeat music, maybe even sitting on the couch and watching a movie instead of at a table. He will always make sure to sprout a beautiful bouquet of their favourite flowers to be on display nearby, though.
Trish:
Trish just doesnât really like cooking
She doesnât like how sweaty the kitchen can get, and hates how onions make her cry. Her mascara is expensive!
Just sits back and lets the boys take care of everything when Bucciarati has the squad over for dinner. Cooking is already stressful enough without 3 fistfights breaking outâŚ
Although she doesnât like cooking, she wouldnât be terrible at it if she were in a situation where she had to.
She does on the other hand enjoy baking though!
She always loved baking with her mom growing up. Her favourite thing to make is cupcakes because itâs so much fun to decorate them with colourful icing and cute sprinkles when theyâre done!
The first time her s/o or crush tries her baking, theyâre just hanging out and she all of the sudden gets the idea to make frosted brownies. She has a lot of fun seeing the different approach they take to decorating them. They start to have weekly baking dates where they try something new every time, and sometimes brings the boys leftovers :)
Yaaaay another one done! I really do love making these. My asks are open so if you enjoyed reading this and would like to see my hcs for a particular situation, go ahead and let me know! Iâm also always looking for more moots to talk about JJBA and other stuff with đ

AO3 Link
Previous Chapter
Amelia and I made eye contact over her momâs head, holding in giggles. Penny was passed out, head back, snoring softly as a woman massaged her feet. Maverick had asked Phoenix to take the girls out for a mani-pedi but we all agreed that I was the less suspicious choice when it came to a girlsâ day out.Â
âWe should get lunch after this,â Amelia pulled out her phone and showed me a vegan place with a clean aesthetic. âWhat about here?â
âSounds good to me,â I lied with a smile. âIs there anything else you want to do today?â I had to keep the girls out of the house for at least another hour but Maverick had said the longer the better. Amelia shrugged,
âIf Mavâs gonna propose, we should go shopping,â I choked on my spit, and Amelia rolled her eyes. âSeriously? He was sweating buckets this morning and now weâre getting manicures?â
âThatâs fair,â Fifteen-year-olds were very perceptive apparently. Penny let out a louder snore and Amelia elbowed her in the ribs, her mom shot awake.
âYes?â
âWeâre getting lunch and then going shopping for matching dresses,â Penny looked at me and I tried to look as enthusiastic as possible.Â
âOkay,â And then she nodded off again. From what Amelia and Mav had both said, Penny had had a long night closing up the Hard Deck and then had thrown back shots with her bartenders. Amelia rolled her eyes and then went back to scrolling through Instagram. My phone buzzed.
Jake: Hey, Wildflower. How are things going?
Daisy: Pennyâs sound asleep and Amelia saw right through Mav
Jake: Figures, man has no poker face when it comes to her
Daisy: Mav owes me big time, Amelia wants to get vegan food
Jake: Iâll take you for pizza tonight after everythingÂ
Daisy: Deal
I paused, brow furrowing. Did he mean getting pizza as a friend? Or as a date? I shook off the thought, of course, it was as friends. WellâŚI blushed, it might not have been so bad if Jake wanted to- No. I put the thought away in a locked filing cabinet, the same cabinet where the feeling of his muscled arms beneath my hand was stored. Jake and I were never going to be anything more than friends, even if he was perfect and handsome, and he listened to all of my stories with a smile on his face. Absolutely not.Â
Jake: What color did you get your nails?
Daisy: Guess
Jake: Green, the same shade as your bedspread
Daisy: How the hell did you guess that on your first try?
Jake: Because you told me it was your favorite
Jake: And I remember everything you say
I didnât even know how to respond, so I didnât. Amelia and I chatted about baking while they painted our toes. She had volunteered to bake for a soccer team bake sale to buy new uniforms for the school year.
âIf you need help, just give me a call. Iâll help you bake whatever you need,â Amelia lit up with a smile,
âThat would be great! I was planning on using bagged mix but actual homemade stuff would sell so much better.â It felt good to be helpful, Amelia reminded me of my oldest niece, Sarah. Sarah was four and loved soccer, at that age it was mostly just kids running around and screaming excitedly. She had the same blonde hair as Amelia too, always smiling and giving her parents a hard time.
After a very dry and under seasoned lunch that Penny and I managed to grin and bear it through, we ended up at a little boutique. Amelia treated Penny and I like her own personal dress up dolls, having us try on dress after dress until she found one that looked good on all three of us and was up to her standards.Â
The dress she settled on for me was a light green made of light, flowy fabric. It cinched at my waist and made my boobs look fantastic. The only negative was that it clung to my stomach a little but I couldnât stop smiling at how cute I looked and in a moment of giddiness, I snapped a picture in the changing room mirror with an arm around my waist. Then I sent it to Jake.Â
âYo, D, you ready to go?â Amelia shouted and I quickly grabbed the shopping bag filled with my earlier clothes and followed her out to the car.Â
Jake: Baby youâre killing me in that dress
Daisy: That was the idea, pretty boy
âFlirting with Hangman?â Penny asked, the pep finally back in her step. âYou two are adorable together.âÂ
âWeâre just friends,âÂ
âSuuuuuuurrreeee,â Amelia patted my shoulder from the back seat, âYou keep telling yourself that, D.âÂ
âYou two are horrible, weâre friends!âÂ
âThat man used to go home with a different girl every night and now he doesnât even look at another woman, even when youâre not at the bar.â Penny shot me a motherly look that had me blushing like a schoolgirl, âIn fact, he spends every moment youâre not there on his phone. Would you happen to know what heâs doing?â
âOh! I know, I know!â Amelia pounds on the back of my seat, âTexting D!â Penny made a dinging noise. âYou guys are too cute together, everyone can see it.âÂ
âIâm not listening,â I plugged my ears with my fingers, âLalalalalalala.â Penny smacked a hand over my mouth.
âI will bet you a hundred dollars that Hangmanâs going to have his hands on you within a minute of us walking through the door.â I was going to lose that bet, I already knew it.Â
âYouâre on.â I was an idiot.
Penny thought they were celebrating the end of summer, a weak cover story, but Penny was looking forward to it. Especially since Maverick had promised to organize the whole thing so that she didnât have to lift a finger, me taking them out on a girlsâ day on Maverickâs credit card was just the cherry on top.Â
âReady to win, mom?â Amelia asked, the double meaning completely lost on Penny as we strolled through the doors of the Hard Deck. The lights were off inside and it was impressive how quiet the daggers were being before Penny flicked on the lights. Stretched across the rafters was a white and gold banner with the words will you marry me written in cursive and Maverick was on one knee with a ring in his hand.
âOh my God! Of course!â Penny rushed to Maverick, kissing him soundly as he slid the long overdue ring onto her finger. The daggers came out from the woodwork, hooping and hollering with excitement. I caught sight of Jake who was already beelining towards me with an indiscernible look on his face.
âYouâre so losing the bet,â Amelia snorted, showing me a timer that was counting down from a minute.Â
âYouâre horrible,â Jake swept me into a hug, the bet officially lost. When my feet lifted from the floor I shrieked in equal parts surprise, horror, and delight.
âJake, put me down!âÂ
âYou look fucking gorgeous, Wildflower.â Jake dropped me gently to my feet but kept his grasp on my waist, holding me at arm's length while he took one long look at me. Amelia walked off, laughing as she went. Jake was looking at me like I was a T-bone steak and he was a starving man, a deep flush working from my cheeks down to my chest under his intense gaze. âI mean it, Daisy. You look beautiful.âÂ
âShut up,â I laughed, letting him pull me into his chest. My heart was racing, that stupid fluttery feeling they described in romance books making me a little nauseous. âWeâre supposed to be paying attention to Mav and Penny.âÂ
âI donât think I can pay attention to anyone but you right now and you, pretty girl, better believe this is Jake talking and not Hangman.â I stopped laughing, wrapping my arms around his waist.
âWell, whoeverâs saying it is making me blush,âÂ
âWell, you made me blush with that picture. Itâs only fair.â Jake squeezed my hip, making me blush even harder. I wanted to go up on my toes and press my lips to his but instead, I pushed him away with a laugh, pretending I didnât believe a word he said like I always did but this time I had doubts that he was joking. âDaisy-â
âCome on, pretty boy. I have to pay the bride.âÂ
X
Daisy yelped when I lifted her onto the bed of the truck. We stayed at the party for a few hours, Daisy spending most of the time with the girls while I hung around Mav and the guys. Maverick had been over the moon, talking about his plans for a big wedding and an even bigger honeymoon. Then when he was ready to spend time with his fiancee, sweeping her off her feet and taking her to his bike, Amelia having been picked up by a friend earlier in the night, Daisy had gone right to my side and laced her fingers with mine.Â
âStop doing that! Youâll hurt your back.â She protested, smacking my chest.
âAnd why would I hurt my back, Wildflower? You donât think Iâm strong enough to manhandle my girl?â Her mouth opened and shut a few times, I could tell by the scrunch of her brow that she didnât know which part of my words to respond to. Did she insist she was too heavy again? Which was total bullshit. Or did she protest that I called her my girl? I tapped her knee, âScoot your pretty ass back to the pillows while I grab the pizza.â Daisy muttered something under her breath about me being an ass but did what I said.Â
She looked as pretty as a picture, leaned back against the pillows in the bed of my truck, her sundress pooled high up on her creamy thighs, staring up at the stars with a soft smile. Lord have mercy, I needed this woman to give my heart a break before it beat so hard it lept from my chest.
âAre you going to keep staring or join me up here?â Daisy snapped without malice, making me grin.
âActually, darlin, I want a picture to prove I had the prettiest girl in the world in my bed.âÂ
âYouâre an idiot,â She sighed but smiled for the picture that I quickly set as my lock screen before climbing up beside her. âYou know, youâre not nearly half as charming as you think you are.âÂ
âAnd youâre a horrible liar. Now eat your pizza and look at the stars,â She responded instantly to the stern tone of my voice, and hell if that didnât make me that much more attracted to her. We ate in silence, staring up at the sky, and when the pizza was gone, Daisy let me wrap her in my arms.Â
I wanted to do this every night, lazily tracing patterns on her thigh and kissing her neck while she giggled at me to knock it off. I wanted her to tell me stories about the stars and lace her fingers with mine. I wanted everything she was willing to give me and a little bit more for as long as she would let me have it. Which was hopefully forever. Forever. Iâd never thought about forever before, not like this at least. My biggest dream had always been flying and I would let nothing get in the way of that but Daisy had been on my mind every second of the day that I wasnât in the sky.Â
âHey, Harvey.â I had been so far in thought I hadnât even heard her phone ring. There was a jealous spark in my chest. Who the hell was Harvey? Some guy from back home?
Daisy must have felt me tense, her free hand resting reassuringly on my thigh. âNo, Iâm fine. Yes, Iâm telling the truth,â She huffed hotly. âNowâs actually not a good time, Iâm stargazing.â The tips of her ears went red, âNo, Iâm not with Tasha. Iâm with,â She looked over at me and I was already staring at her. What was she going to say? Friend might kill me, I knew boyfriend was off the table for now. âIâm with a very good friend,â She squeezed my thigh, âHis nameâs Jake.â
A very good friend? I could work with that. âYeah, okay, Harv. I love you too,â Just hearing those three words come out of her mouth was enough to stop my heart. She squeezed my thigh again, biting her bottom lip as she stared up at me. âGive my nieces a kiss for me. Mâbye.â Nieces. Harvey must have been the brother Phoenix had mentioned in passing.Â
âWhat was that about?â Daisy shook her head, silencing her phone before relaxing back into my side, her hand still on my thigh.
âHeâs just checking up on me. I, uh, historically donât do well with September.â I waited for her to elaborate, to talk my ear off for an hour but no explanation came.Â
âCare to explain?âÂ
âItâll ruin the night, trust me. Iâll tell you some other time.âÂ
âIâm going to hold you to that, Daisy. I want to know everything about you, the good, the bad, and the ugly.â She huffed at me and I just knew she was rolling her eyes.
âCan you just hold me for a little bit longer and maybeâŚâ She trailed off with a sigh, fingers tapping on my thigh. âCan youâŚâÂ
âWhatever you want, Wildflower. All you ever have to do is ask.âÂ
âKiss my hair?â This woman was going to kill me, it was official, and I couldnât have been happier to be a dead man walking.
âIt would be my pleasure, darlin.â I tried to take a picture of this moment in my mind.
I could feel the warmth of her body against mine, making me forget about everything else in the world. Daisyâs hair smelled like vanilla and lavender and as I placed a gentle kiss on her soft, red hair, I couldnât help but do it again, and again. We sat there until the air became too cold for comfort, even with a blanket, the sky twinkling above us as her fingers gently rubbed my thigh through my jeans. It was the perfect night, I kissed her forehead when I pulled her out of the truck bed, and then her knuckles after I helped her into the passenger seat.
âSuch a gentleman, Jake.â She sighed, looking at me like Penny had looked at Mav when she spotted him on one knee. I swallowed hard, mouth going dry thinking about myself down on one knee.
âIâm your gentleman, Wildflower.â

Day 215
Meetings were undoubtedly the worst invention in the history of humanity. Okay, there were some worse inventions but Sy couldnât think of any, what with having used up all his brain power justifying every decision heâd made in the past year.
âWhat about the girl?â
Sy clenched his jaw to keep from barking the wrong thing. âCorporal Coleman? What about her?â
He hated the detached tone of his own voice. It was not a tone a man should ever use when talking about the woman he loved.
âThe only reason sheâs made it this far is because she had excellent marksmanship scores and had the best performance out of all the women during the physical fitness tests but she was completely untested in the field. Seeing now that she was injured within her first week tells me she isnât cut out for this.â
âWith all due respect Sir, she suffered minor injuries where many of my other men would have gone home in a bag. She more than proved herself to be field ready during her time at Warhorse and it would be foolish to exclude her from this next mission and separate her from her squad. Sergeant Fullerâs entire team is thrivinâ under his command.â
Some of the men around the table nodded in understanding but the man at the head of the table pursed his lips. âWeâll take that into consideration.â
Luckily the man to his left didnât seem to share the same backwards opinion about women in the military and intervened on Leahâs behalf.
âWhatever group is selected will be performinâ a month long trainin' exercise before their mission. I suggest that we allow Corporal Coleman to participate and re-evaluate at a later date.â
âYes,â the old fucker eventually agreed, âI suppose that would be acceptable.â It was obvious those words tasted terrible coming out of his mouth. âAre there any pain points we need to watch out for? How is she taking orders?â
Sy shifted in his seat, working hard to keep his mind from going to inappropriate places. This was not the time for his dick to go half-mast.
âShe obeys them if thatâs the question.â It was a half truth but there was no way Sy would give them any ammunition against Leah. She obeyed orders when it mattered, that was the most important thing. There wouldnât be a repeat of the Niki incident so there was no point in bringing it up.
âRight. That brings us to our next point of attention.â
Sy may or may not have partially checked out after that. The rest of the meeting was marginally better with the knowledge that Leah was going to be given a shot. It didnât sound like they were giving her a fair shot but at least she would have the chance to prove herself. And the memory of Leah being very good at taking orders.
Day 216
Leah startled as a heavy bag was dropped at her feet, nearly spilling her overpriced latte.
âDamn, Coleman, whatâs got you looking like someone just kicked your puppy?â
BJ fell into the seat across from her, causing the chair to creak under his weight. His comment fell short of making her smile but she made an effort to show she was pleased to see him..
âIâm sorry, are you lost, kiddo? Do you need me to help you find your mommy?â
âHa ha. Very funny, Princess.â
Leaning back, Leah pulled her hair over her shoulder, running it through her fingers. Even beardless, one could not describe BJ as having a baby face but it would definitely take some getting used to.
âI guess it doesnât look so good if you donât follow the grooming standards on your first day back from R&R.â
âNo it does not.â
It hadnât even occurred to her that Sy would have to do the same. Heâd still been sporting his full beard when heâd left the night before.
âSo⌠Any particular reason youâre just hanging out at the airport like a weirdo?â
That did succeed in making Leah crack a smile. Rolling her eyes, she kicked BJ under the table.
âI was savoring one last decent cup of coffee.â
BJ stole said cup, taking a sip. âYou know that thing is stone cold right?â
âMaybe thatâs what I ordered,â she grumbled, knowing very well that the cardboard sleeve on her cup was meant to protect you from the heat, not the cold.
She didnât try to get her drink back. Sheâd only ordered it to have an excuse to sit on the comfortable bench in the cafeâs dining area rather than out by the doors.
âDo anything interesting while you were home?â BJ asked, taking a large gulp of the coffee, not at all bothered that it was no longer warm.
Leah knew he was fishing for juicy details about her and Sy but she wasnât in the right headspace to talk about that.
âI got some new ink,â she said instead.
BJ perked up anyway. âNo shit? Can I see?â
Leah grabbed her phone, finding the picture and handing it over.
âLooks fucking great, Coleman,â he said after a few moments of close inspection, zooming in and out. âDid you post this anywhere?â
âUh, no. I just took it for me, why?â
âOh, you know⌠your secret relationship might not stay secret for long if anyone spots whatâs hanging over the back of that chair.â
Leah snatched the phone out of BJâs hand, zooming in to see what the hell he was talking about. Sure enough, draped over the back of her desk chair was a very familiar red t-shirt.
âFuck. BJ you canâtââ
âI know,â he assured, cutting her off. âI know what this could mean for the both of you.â
He raised his hand to his chin only to drop it as he remembered there was no beard left to stroke. After glancing behind him to make sure they were still alone in the back corner, BJ leaned forward on the table.
âThis is gonna sound cold as fuck but Iâm more worried about Sy than I am you. Syâs already thirteen years in. Seven more and he gets his retirement which he really fucking deserves after the shit weâve been through.â
Leah hadnât considered that. A lot could happen in seven years but BJ was right that Sy losing his benefits after already serving so much time would suck.Â
âI donât know what to do, BJ. The rules are clear about officer/enlisted relationships.â
At the very least, BJ looked genuinely sympathetic. âHow long do you have left?â
He meant how long before her minimum commitment was up.
âAbout twenty-six months but I was planning to stay on afterwards.â If she didnât get herself blown up first.
âHave you thought about becoming an officer? Then in a couple of years you guys could say you just started dating.â
She had and sheâd already mentally crossed it out.
âI have less than half of an art degree, thereâs no way I can possibly get the rest of my credits online from Warhorse.â
âThen you better make sure you get that shit locked up tight because youâll both be fucked if word gets out.â
When they arrived at the base, the room was filled with the sound of soldiers greeting each other. Man hugs and pats on the back were exchanged all around. Leahâs boys enthusiastically lifted her in the air while the others mostly stuck to fist bumps.Â
Their reunion was interrupted by a shrill whistle and every head turned towards Sy. Leahâs breath hitched as she spotted her man standing in the doorway with arms crossed over his chest. His beardless face was no less attractive and just as stern. She didnât like the way all the tension that had faded from his features over the last two weeks had returned. Leah continued to study him, appreciating how handsome he was in his full uniform, until her eyes fixed on his chest.
âI need team leaders with me.â
As the men followed Sy, a round of whispers erupted around the room.
âWhat is that all about?â
âWhy do they need a briefing? I thought we were all going back to Baqubah.â
âItâs probably nothing. Heâs probably just updating them on what has been going on at Warhorse since weâve been gone.â
Leah continued to stare at the space Sy had occupied moments before.
âColeman?â Ethan waved a hand in front of Leahâs face. âWhy do you look like youâve just seen a ghost?â
Leah turned her head, finding three worried faces looking back at her.
âCapâs uniform,â she said on an exhale.
Jer shook his head, not understanding what she was saying. âWhat about it?â
âSeriously?â When her voice came out as a panicked squeak, she cleared her throat. âHave you guys forgotten what itâs supposed to look like?â
Ethanâs eyes went wide. âOh shit. Guys, sheâs right.â
âAbout what?â Jer asked.
It was Rohan who responded for them. âWe canât call him âCapâ anymore.â
The team leaders returned, Sy and his newly earned Majorâs rank following close behind.
They gathered around Benjie, eager to hear what their orders were.
âWeâre flying out but we arenât going East. Donât bother unpacking. Weâre lifting off at fourteen hundred hours.â
As Leah ran around the base, she grew more and more worried she wouldnât find Sy in time. Sheâd called five times with no answer and was down to only ten minutes before she absolutely had to be gone. He wasnât in his room, the mess hall or the gym.
As it turned out, heâd been looking for her too.
âColeman, finally.â
Relief swept over her at the sound of his voice. Though she wanted to run into his arms, she knew that there were eyes on them even if no one was around. She made her way to him at a very normal, not at all inappropriate, speed.
âWhatâs this?â she asked as Sy handed her a folded piece of paper.Â
âMy parents' address down in Georgia. If ya ever feel like writinâ, send it there and my parents will make sure I get it.â
Leah frowned as she took it.
âWhy canât I just send it straight to you?â
The muscles ticked in Syâs jaw, fully visible now that he was clean shaven. His non-answer as he looked down at the ground was enough.
âBecause you donât want anyone to realize Iâm writing to you,â she concluded, feeling like an utter fool.
A month ago she would never have even considered starting anything with Sy for that exact reason. In the safety of her hometown, surrounded by her friends and family, sheâd forgotten all about how he could be the end of her career. The reminder that she could only ever be Syâs dirty little secret was like a bucket of ice water being dumped over her head.
âThereâs a reason this shit is forbidden, Leah. I had to sit in front of my superiors and defend why ya should be allowed to follow the rest of the team on this traininâ exercise. If it came out that we were in a relationship, they would automatically assume it was all bullshit even if every word I spoke about your skills was true. If we get found out, they canât ever know how far back it started. If they look into your history under my command there canât be any signs of impropriety or favoritism.â
Leah couldnât help but wonder if he was just saying that to make her feel better. It felt like a cruel twist on the classic âitâs not you, itâs meâ. Iâm not protecting my own ass, Iâm protecting yours.
âYou said that when our two weeks were over we wouldnât be apart.â
Sy had to ball his hands into fists to keep from reaching for her. Leahâs face was a blank mask but he could see the tears forming in her eyes and could hear the way her voice broke.
âI know. This isnât what I was expectinâ either. Hopefully weâll both be somewhere where we can use our cellphones.â
He knew damn well that was unlikely, hence the slip of paper with his parentsâ address. He was going back to Warhorse for a few weeks before moving to a still undetermined location. Neither of them knew where they would be a month from then, let alone a year.
âDid you conveniently forget to tell me you were up for a promotion? Even if they hadnât taken us out of Baqubah, you being promoted would still have meant leaving Warhorse.â
Shaking his head, Sy looked down at the insignia on his chest. âI thought weâd have more time. Those things arenât automatic at my grade.â
âRight.â
He was losing her. Every wall and defense heâd worked so hard to knock down was slowly being rebuilt right before his eyes and he felt powerless to stop it.
âDarlinâ,â he murmured, making sure no one could possibly overhear. âThis doesnât change anything between us. The timinâ is shit, Iâll give ya that, but donât think for a fuckinâ second that this changes us.â
âHow can it not?â
The defeat in her voice broke his heart.
âI wonât lie and say I know how this is all gonna work. Fuck, the truth is I ainât got a damn clue what to do here. Please, just give us a chance to figure this out.â
Leah blinked back the tears threatening to fall. Sy could tell she was battling the urge to push him away and spare herself further heartache. If she did, there was nothing he could do to stop her.
She shut her eyes, crossing her arms over her chest and rubbing her arms up and down like she was cold. They were silent for so long, Sy almost thought she wouldnât say anything at all.
Then, in the greatest demonstration of her trust he could ever witness, she looked back up and spoke a whispered âokayâ.
There was so much more that needed to be said but their time had run out.Â
âColeman, Jesus, weâve been looking all over for you, girl. Weâre moving out.â
Leah quickly took two steps back. Luckily for them, Sy stood between her and Jer as he approached so he didnât see how close the two had been standing.
âThanks again, Major. Take care of Aika for me.â
Those shouldnât have been their parting words. He should have told her he loved her. He should have made it clear that that wouldnât change even with the distance. Instead, heâd lectured her about why their relationship was wrong when heâd been the one to push for it in the first place.
As he watched her walk away, Leah peaked over her shoulder. Not wasting his opportunity, he mouthed those oh so important words just as she turned the corner.
Moving on auto-pilot, Sy made his way back to his room. After unlocking the door and stepping inside, his foot suddenly slid out from under him. He narrowly avoided falling on his ass by catching hold of the doorframe.
âThe fuck?â
He looked down at the large manila envelope which was blank save for his bootprint. Shutting the door, Sy leaned down to pick up the offending item. There was no way it was an official communication of any sort and there was only one person who would bother sliding something under his door.
Sy found a knife, cutting open the top of the envelope and carefully pulling out the contents. The yellow paper had gotten wrinkled from being stepped on but it seemed Leah had had the forethought to protect whatever was inside by putting it between two sheets of rigid cardboard.
Between them, Sy found an expensive looking piece of paper on which Leah had drawn in ink. It was a snarling wolf, the lines of its body bold and sharp unlike the matching pattern on his back which had faded from his shower and the friction of his clothing. Sheâd signed the image with her initials and added yesterdayâs date.
That was when Sy lost it. Though he was tempted to hold the drawing close to his chest, he had just enough presence of mind to put it back in the envelope and set it on the table before sitting on the edge of the bed. There, with his elbows resting on his knees and his head in his hands, Sy wept.
Day 214
Golden rays of sunlight filtering into the bedroom roused Sy from his deep slumber. Laying on his stomach with his face buried in a fluffy pillow, he almost let himself drift back to sleep but a strange tickling sensation running across his back forced his mind to slowly come back into awareness.
He kept his eyes closed as he took note of his surroundingsâthe cool air of the room on his naked back, the pitter patter of rain hitting the window, the lingering scent of cedar on her sheets. When he finally remembered where heâd fallen asleep the night before, he was easily able to identify the now familiar sensation of Leahâs marker gliding across his skin.
âWhat am I gettinâ this time?â he asked, his voice still rough with sleep.
She hadnât done much drawing in the past ten days, preferring to enjoy the time they had together, but sheâd pulled her sketchbook out once or twice. The day Sy stayed in one place long enough to buy his own couch he was going to get a couch that pulled out like Leahâs. It was perfect for lazy evenings spent cuddling together.
It had been raining almost non-stop for the past three days, forcing them to stay indoors. Not that Sy was complaining. Any time he could spend with Leah next to him was time well spent.
âIâm drawing Fenrir, itâs a creature from Norse mythology.â
Thinking back to his conversation with Niki about Leahâs drawings being her diary, he couldnât help but be curious if this particular drawing had a hidden meaning behind it.Â
âI feel like Iâve seen the name before but I donât remember what it looks like.â
âItâs basically a big angry wolf. The short version of the story is that there was a prophecy saying Fenrir would be involved in the demise of the Gods during Ragnarok. They tried preventing this by tricking Fenrir into allowing himself to be bound by requesting that he test the strength of the bindings. Fenrir obviously didnât want to stay trapped so he requested a sign of good faith by holding the hand of a god in his jaws as they tested the ties. When he realized he wouldnât be released, he bit the hand clean off. In the end he still broke free, unleashing chaos and devouring Odin before meeting his own end.â
Maybe it was best if Sy didnât try to read too far into this one. They had enough death, chaos and destruction in their line of work.
âIs the wolf on your thigh supposed to be Fenrir?â
âNo, mine is just a normal earth-roaming wolf. They are gorgeous creatures.â
Sy opened one eye, peeking at Leah over his shoulder. âYou were team Jacob werenât ya?â
Once again, Leah was surprised by his knowledge of such a female oriented piece of pop culture.
âOnly in the books. Heâs kind of a whiny bitch in the movies.â
Sy attempted to keep his body still as he chuckled, praying he wasnât messing up the lines of Leahâs drawing.
âHow many sisters have you got again?â
âIâve got two older sisters and twin younger brothers.â
Leah paused what she was doing, shifting to straddle one of Syâs thighs now that he was awake.
âWow. That must have been chaotic. We outnumbered dad two to one, I canât imagine if it had been five to two.â
âIt was mostly calm until the twins came along. Olivia and Abigail are eleven months apart and were both quiet, studious types. Iâm three years younger than Abi and five and a half years older than Jackson and Austin.â
âAre you guys close?â
Seeing as this was the first time she heard all of their names, she could already guess the answer to that question.
âNot really. I mean, the girls and the twins are inseparable pairs but I never got along with the girls growinâ up and the twins were only twelve when I left.â
Maybe his sister had had a point after all. Heâd been absent more than heâd been present in his brothersâ lives. He knew shockingly little of who they had grown up to be.
âI guess itâs kind of my own fault in a way. I was so desperate to leave because of how out of place I felt that I never really gave them the chance to show me things could be different now.â
It had been jarring to see the twins with babies the first time. In his mind, he still pictured them both as scrawny, shaggy-haired pre-teens.
âWhy did you feel out of place?â
âI was always the odd one out. Even before the twins came along, the girls were always off doinâ their own thing.â
Too often he saw himself as a burden on the family. Like he was the extra mouth to feed and not much more.
âIs the relationship as strained with your parents as it is with your siblings?â
âNo, my mama is the sweetest woman. A homemaker through and through. She stayed with us until the twins started school and even then she only went back part-time until I graduated. My dad worked a lot growinâ up but he had this rule that he always had to be home for dinner so sometimes he would come all the way home to eat with us before goinâ back to work for a double shift. The only time he was more present was right after the twins were born. My mama had had a C-section so she needed the extra help while she recovered.â
Leah was pretty sure extra help was appreciated at any point after having a kid, but good for mama Syverson if she could handle the first three babies all on her own. Growing up, people had sometimes told her father that she and Caleb would be happier with a motherly figure in their livesâespecially after it became obvious that their dad wasnât making any effort to date. Sy was proof that having two parents around didnât magically make a family closer or happier.
Putting the cap back on her marker, Leah moved to lay down beside her boyfriend. Yes, their two weeks were up and Sy was most definitely her boyfriend. It was also their last lazy morning together. That evening, Sy was getting on the red-eye back to North Carolina and Leah was taking the one the following day. He had to be back earlier for various meetings with their superiors and Leah had already booked her ticket which cost too much to change at the last minute.
Sy rolled onto his side, pulling Leah flush against him.
âNo picture?â
Leah shrugged. âMaybe next time.â
She had done her best to keep her concerns at bay but they were becoming harder to ignore as what felt like the end-date on their relationship crept nearer.
Now it was D-day and every fiber of her being screamed at her not to let Sy go.
âStop it.â
âStop what?â
Sy placed a soft kiss to the space between her brows. âWorryinâ. Weâll be okay.â
âYou canât know that.â
Leah pressed her forehead to the crook of Syâs neck, stealing more of his warmth. Theyâd decided to stay at the cabin for their last evening together. Unfortunately, the only heat source was the fireplace in the living room and the temperature had dropped overnight.
Sy was only wearing his briefs while Leah was in her panties and a thin camisole. He was absolutely unbothered but Leah was getting to the point where her nipples were so hard she was sure Sy could feel them poking his chest.
âDarlinâ, youâre shiverinâ.â
He pulled the blanket back over the both of them, rubbing Leahâs arms and back. She could still pick up on the faint almond scent of the beard oil heâd used after his shower the night before. It was a smell that she now fully associated with Syâs comforting embrace.
Suddenly she was shaking for a whole different reason. There was no way she could risk sneaking moments like this while at Warhorse. Her only cuddles or kisses would come from Aika. If she had a rough day she would need to take out her frustrations in the gym. When Sy addressed her it would be by her rank or her last name.
If either of them so much as slipped once, it was all over for them.
âOh, baby girl.â Sy recognized the stiffness in Leahâs body. When Leah became stressed she became tense or jittery and working out was her way of expelling that excess energy. âIâm all in, Leah. No matter what happens, Iâm gonna do whatever it takes to make this work.â

Welcome Home
Kakashi Hatake x Chubby! Reader
Kakashi gave a tired sigh as he walked down the all too familiar path, he had finished training his squad for the day and was making his way home. A tired smile slipped on his face when he noticed a large and old cherry blossom tree starting to bloom, though it was pretty he was smiling more at the memory attached to it. He had been a cocky punk as a kid and even as a teen he had a bit of a streak in him, but there was one person able to wash away that aggression. (Y/n) was just a couple years younger than him and he had first met her when some new chunin had been bullying the (E/c) eyed girl, she was a bit heavier than most girls her age but she also wasn't exactly interested in being a kunoichi so she had no real reason to go out of her way to exorcise as a ninja would. Kakashi had recognized her from a small restaurant he occasionally visited which he later learned was owned by her parents, so he decided to step in and run them off since he did out rank them, and their behavior only shined a stained light on the village. But that had just been the start, before long they had become friends and eventually things had fallen into place and they had become lovers as young adults, one of his more recent memories had been proposing to the beautiful girl beneath that very tree.
He had fallen hard and by the time he noticed he was already love struck, she was a sweet and gentle soul who he felt was far more beautiful than the vein and rude jonin who loved to boast about how they're "peak attractiveness." Something he thought was a bunch of BS since for quite a few It was obvious they had only just barely had the skills to reach their ranks, most of them couldn't hold a conversation unless it was about them or someone else and he just couldn't get passed how ugly they were on the inside. His angel may have been different from most, but she was still beautiful to him in her own perfect way. He closed his eye as he continued his walk, though he began walking faster as his stomach growled. It was Wednesday, meaning his wife was making eggplant and miso soup with salt-broiled saury, one of his favorites. He loved her cooking; he was exhilarated to learn that out of her siblings she'd be the one to inherit the family restaurant. Her brother had become a ninja and her sister wanted to be a fashion designer and seamstress, Kakashi liked making jokes that talent runs through her family as it made her flustered.
Upon walking through the door his stomach announced his arrival, making the male blush while lowering his mask when hearing his wife's laugh from the kitchen. She stood in front of the sink, the front door opened into the kitchen and to the left had been the living room. "Welcome home love." The (H/c) haired girl turned from the boiling pot on the stove to look at where he stood near the front door, the house smelled of soup and grilled fish and teased him with the fact that he'd have to get cleaned up before he got to eat. "Thanks, beautiful, I'm glad to see you're in a good mood." The silver haired male chuckled and made his approach to the blushing girl, curling his arms around her waist as she turned to face him and rested her hands on his chest when gazing up at him. "Things went rather smoothly at the restaurant today, the new waitress has really made things a lot easier. How was your day? Did the kids tire you out as usual?" Her question had a grin quirking his gorgeous lips, making him chuckle as he leaned his forehead to hers. Feeling her gentle hands rub his temples and brush through his hair his body relaxed into her, his single black eye gazed into hers. "A bit, I'll save the stories for dinner though. Thankfully they weren't as much of a handful as they usually were." He leaned back, letting her sway them from side to side and listening to her beautiful laugh. "Well why don't you go get cleaned up, it should be finished by the time you get done." This statement made the male nod before he leaned down to kiss her forehead, reluctantly slipping away from her to go shower as she continued cooking. Neither noticing the preteens dangling from the window, the 3 kids who made up squad 7 had peaked up just in time to see him hug the girl. Though unfortunately for them they had been so startled at the fact he was in a relationship that they hadn't paid any attention to trying to see his face, and upon noticing Kakashi about to turn around they panicked and slipped off the ledge left to dangle and missing their second chance.
-------------------------Bonus:
The next day Kakashi had met the team at the training grounds, but he was both surprised and mildly concerned when he got there and they all three stood with their arms crossed like parents who just found their child's porn stash. "Uh.... Good afternoon..." He raised a hand in an awkward wave and feeling oddly threatened. It was then that the 3 rushed him, Kakashi had to fight every instinct that insisted he run away as he could almost feel this situation was gonna get weird. "Don't good afternoon us Kakashi sensei! Why didn't you tell us you were married!? Why don't you wear your ring!?" This had been Sakura speaking up first, the girl clearly thinking about the worst. So, with a sigh Kakashi decided to just rip off this band aid, so he removed one of his fingerless gloves to show his wedding band protected within. "It just never occurred to me, it's not like it changes anything." That was when Naruto popped up in front of him, startling him far more than he ever thought it would. "You should have told us it was to Miss (Y/n), we could have been eating lunch at the Konoha Lotus!"
That had Kakashi quirking an eyebrow, he forgot that Naruto did eat things aside from ramen from time to time. But he still didn't see what had the three riled up, that was when Sasuke spoke up next. "It's nice to know you aren't an ass like Kaiba." Kakashi cringed at the mention of being compared to such a male, Kaiba having been a petty little man whose thoughts and opinions were only skin deep. "Just how vain did you all think I was!?" Kakashi gave an exasperated sigh, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Well, I mean a lot of girls do have a thing for you, we always thought you were oblivious or just playing hard to get. At least we know you're just loyal though." Kakashi felt his head drop as a weight dropped onto him, he never realized how his attempts at ignoring the fawning of his fangirls made him look. Buuuuut at least they knew he was a devoted husband now, maybe they'd listen just a little bit better from now on. Though he doubted that, then it would just be too easy.

Hold On For All It's Worth
written for @steddiesongfics inspired by the song Empire Now by Hozier
wc: 1971 | rated: M | cw: mental health issues, thinking about death/wanting to be dead, depiction of injuries, blood | tags: post S4V2, Vecna is defeated, everybody lives, hurt/comfort, (implied) friends to lovers | ao3
Eddie should be used to it by now. Should be used to his life being a complete shit show. Always out to get him. Always finding ways to bring him down.
Life was never easy. Sure, it made a turn for the better when Wayne took him in, gave him a safe home and guidance, the kind of fatherly love heâd been missing before â Wayne made his life bearable, good. But even that wasnât enough to rearrange his stars. Eddie, it seems, was always meant to be a fuck-up. An outsider. Struggling to find his place in this world.
Heâs tired oft trying to get back up over and over again, knowing the next bump in the road bringing him down is waiting just around the corner.
Dustin keeps telling him everything will be fine. That he has to be patient, to wait for the wounds to fully heal. Says that the nightmares will eventually stop. That itâll take some time but eventually, things will be good again.
And Eddie knows heâs not just saying that, that Dustin and his friends have been there multiple times. Theyâve fought and lost and theyâve been hurt both physically and mentally and still, they keep going.
Keep taking a step at a time towards normalcy. Holding each other up, finding comfort in their shared experience because it helps to know that theyâre not alone in the aftermath of an interdimensional war.
âYouâre no alone, Eddie. Weâre always here for you. Youâre one of us.â
He knows they mean it. Knows that, once youâve been part of their suicide squad (like, come on. What else can you call a group of teenagers recklessly going to literal war with creatures that should only exist in fantasy games and books, not real life!?) youâre stuck with them.
Itâs something Eddie still has a hard time getting through to his thick head. Heâd obviously thought (hoped) that the little shitheads would stick around after everything. But never in a million years had he thought heâd gain more than one new friend. Real ones, like Red and Erica and Robin and... Steve.
They are such a weird group of individuals. Thrown together by accident, really. But they work, somehow. And they are doing their best to convince him that he, too, is part of it now. Part of this strange little family.
And he tries, really, to show appreciation for everything they do - always asking how he is, always looking out for him. Always there when heâs feeling especially down, ready to throw it all out the window because heâs just too fucking tired to deal with anything.
Like today.
He woke up with the worst headache, didnât get any sleep because whenever he closed his eyes, he was back in that place that nearly cost him his life. Back where those winged demons nearly ate him alive.
Sometimes, he wished theyâd finished their job.
Sometimes, he wished Dustin hadnât come back to sit at his side while he succumbed to the darkness. Because if he hadnât, Steve would never have found them, wouldnât have felt the need to carry him out of hell â giving in to his hero complex or whatever it is that turned Steve into this knight in shining armor, summoning inhuman strength to pick up Eddieâs lifeless body while his own body had been weakened by bat bites and sore muscles.
If Steve hadnât brought him back, Owensâ people wouldnât have been able to save him. To restart his heart after it had already given up the fight. It shouldâve been impossible to bring him back from the dead after being out for too long, after losing too much blood with his organs spilling out of his mangled body. But they refused to give up on him.
Dustin apparently threw a proper fit, fist-swinging and feet-kicking despite his broken leg, when they tried to get him out of the hospital, away from Eddieâs side.
Steve hadnât let go of him even after heaving his blood-drenched, ripped-apart body onto the hospital bed. Dustin told him they had to physically remove Steveâs tight gripping hand from Eddieâs before they could take him to the ER. Probably frozen in shock because Eddie can only imagine how fucked-up and horrible he mustâve looked.
Nancy and Robin threatened to reveal the governmentâs secrets to the world if they didnât at least try. They had enough proof, enough to show for. All it needed was one phone call, one newspaper article to get the ball rolling â Owens knew that.
Theyâre the reason heâs still alive. The reason heâs forced to go to physical therapy to get his body moving again. The reason for Eddie to wake up drenched in cold sweat almost every night. Theyâre the reason heâs forced to keep fighting, no matter how tired of it he is.
No matter how much he hates everything about being alive when his legs wonât move and his scars itch and his head pounds and all he wants to do is cry. Cry and scream and ask God or whoever why he canât just let him have a goddamn moment of peace?
Thereâs a knock on his door, followed by Wayneâs face poking in through the gap when he opens it slowly.
âSteveâs here. Can I send him in?â
Eddie wants to say no, doesnât want Steve to see him like this â bound to the bed because his body refuses to work, with tears his eyes â but he knows itâs useless. Steve would just wait it out, come back in a few hours or maybe keep Wayne some company because the old man has apparently formed some kind of fatherly bond with him over the past weeks, to Eddieâs misfortune.
So, Eddie resigns, grumbles a displeased response before pulling his blanket over his head to hide.
He can hear Steve enter, can hear the door closing behind him and his quiet footsteps as he makes his way over to the bed. The mattress dips and Eddie can feel a hand coming to rest on his shoulder, can feel Steveâs warmth even through the blanket.
  âHey, Eddie. How are you?â
Eddie wants to laugh, wants to spit out words of frustration, wants to scream at Steve for putting him in this misery. For saving him, for not just letting him rot in hell so he could finally rest in peace. But none of that makes its way out of his mouth because when he opens it, all the pain and frustration and anger bubble up from somewhere deep down, transforming into a pitiful sob.
He cries and cries and cries. His body trembles and it hurts, everything hurts and he canât stop wishing, begging for it all to stop, for it all to be over.
âI canât do this anymore. I donât want to do this anymore. I wish I was dead!â
A hand comes up to grab the edge of his blanket, pulling it slowly down to reveal his scarred face, his messy hair, his swollen eyes. Broken and tired and so sick of his own existence.
âEddie?â Steveâs voice is delicate, soft, barely a whisper and Eddie hates himself for how concerned he sounds. Hates himself for putting this on Steve.
Steve shouldnât have to deal with this mess.
âCan I- is it okay if I touch you?â
Another desperate sob makes its way out when Eddie nods weakly, feels selfish and greedy for some sort of comfort â whatever Steve is willing to give.
What Eddie doesnât expect is that Steve shuffles to squeeze himself into the small, empty space beside him, lying there face to face with him, his body so close that â if it werenât for the blanket â theyâd be touching from nose to toe.
Steve wraps one arm around him, the motion bringing him even closer to the other manâs body.
âItâs okay to be frustratedâ Steve whispers. âItâs okay to lose hope sometimes. I get it, Eddie. I know what it feels like to just want to give up. Believe me, Iâve been there more times than I can count.â
Eddie listens, still not able to stop the tears from falling but at least his breathing starts to slow while he focusses on Steveâs voice.
âIâve wanted to give up so many times but you know what I learned?â
Eddie shakes his head, his nose brushing Steveâs skin where his face is buried between his neck and shoulder.
âI learned that, no matter how fucked-up things are, no matter how much you hate everything and everyone, if youâre really true to yourself, youâll find thereâs always, always something worth fighting for. You might not see it right now but itâs there. Itâs there and itâs worth to get through the rough days because somewhere down the line, itâs waiting for you with open arms.â
Steve squeezes him, drawing him once again closer into his embrace.
âBut what if I never find it?â Eddie asks through a staggered exhale, hot and damp against Steveâs neck.
âMaybe you just have to open your eyes and see it for what itâs worth.â
One hand finds his cheek, the one thatâs unmarred, and when Steve leans away just enough to make space, he forces him to look up. To find Steveâs warm eyes looking down at him. Smiling, soft and loving in a way that makes Eddieâs heart stutter. Makes his stomach twist into knots when he realises just how close Steve is.
And then it hits him.
All the things he should be grateful for, all the things that are worth the struggle, worth the fight. All the things that he can hold onto on days like today, where the world feels like tumbling down.
The fact that Wayne didnât have to hold a funeral for him, mourn over an empty coffin, an empty grave because his body had been left to decay in the Upside Down.
The fact that Dustin didnât have to make true to his enforced promise to take over Eddieâs place at Hellfire, not yet at least.
The fact that Eddie got to see Gareth and Jeff and Zach again.
The fact that heâs breathing and walking and able to play his guitar â even if itâs still hard most days and itâll take time to fully heal.
The fact that heâs got all these wonderful people in his life, people that care about him, that will always be there to catch him when he falls and help him back up on his feet if he canât find the strength to do it himself.
People like Dustin and Robin and Steve.
Steve, who doesnât care about Eddie staining his shirt with tears. Steve, who is holding him, one hand gently rubbing in soothing circles on his back. Steve, who had refused to leave him behind, who had clung to him even when he was technically dead. Steve, who keeps coming back, keeps showing up, keeps pestering Eddie with his annoying care and kindness.
Steve, who-
Whoâs leaning in â tentatively, almost like heâs afraid of overstepping a line that was never there because ever since the moment Eddie had held that broken bottle against his throat, he knew there was an undeniable truth taking root in his heart â and kisses him.
Kisses him soft and slow and Eddie-
Eddie kisses him back. Sees, even through his closed eyes, that this right here is worth holding on for. Worth fighting for.
Worth being alive for.
No matter how many bumps are waiting for him on the road ahead â heâll just take it one step at a time.
And if he stumbles or even falls, Steve will be there waiting with open arms, ready to catch him.

Chapter 5 Secret Boss Prediction
Ohohohoh boy! Finally got to this one. I've been just sort ruminating on this boss for a while. The only thing I knew for the longest time is I'm at least 60% confident that chapter 5 will happen in the Flower Shop? But then what could be abandoned, discarded, or unwanted in a greenhouse/flower shop? Weeds? Mushrooms? Well I guess? Lotta flowers and though the mushroom idea was enticing at first, I couldn't wrap my head around a good idea for it. There was also the thing with this boss likely having the blue soul mode, and possibly having a reference or allusion to Papyrus (or Sans ig but Paps uses the blue soul mode first). But then also also with this being Asgore's flower shop and Asriel possibly being involved, there's the chance it could be based on Flowery, but then- And you can start to see why this took me so long.
EVENTUALLY, I came up with the idea of an abandoned toy soldier, lost among the plants and eventually taken over by them. There was also some talk about it being a nutcracker or garden gnome instead, but toy solider won over. Nutcracker felt too similar to Spamton and I just couldn't really get the garden gnome to vibe right. Anyways! Like two, three weeks ago I managed to sketch a design I kinda liked before trying to think on it more. Still not the boss I'm proudest off, but everyone, met The Great and Mighty Veratus! (Name subject to change if I can find a better one.)
(Once again, theme commissioned by my good friend @kierangecko)
Veratus, from verrat (German for traitor), ratus (latin for rat) and a corruption of veritas (truth). I think the thing I was struggling with for the longest time was the name. It needed to fit with the other names, and also sound good with the title of "The Great" (because Papyrus reference). Like I mentioned before though, that name is subject to change if I come up with something better.
Like I've mentioned with the other two, I know this is no where close to what we'll actually get, but all of this is just for fun and so I have some secret bosses to draw my Junior Secret Squad kiddies with. Once we DO finally get chapter 5, Veratus will likely just become one of the secret bosses of Fool's Fate.
Now, backstory under the cut.
A solider from a distant land, Veratus found himself stranded in this dark world after the Great Divide. His king and fell soldiers in arms falling back and leaving him for dead. At the mercy of the Flower Kingdom's new ruler and its army.
Luckily for Veratus, the Knight chose not to bother killing the lone soldier, thinking that the side effects of the Divide would render the rat to stone soon. Yet for some reason, Veratus did not become stone...
Alone and outcast in a world not his own, Veratus was eventually found by a man. A strange someone whom some had theorized brought forth the Great Divide. The man cast pity on Veratus, and offered the stranded soldier his help. The opportunity to blend into this world and infiltrate Knight's army in exchange for his loyalty and help getting close to Knight. Veratus agreed.
Veratus's fur became overtaken with moss and his body with vines, though it might have been painful it did make him look like a rather convincing part of this floral Dark World. In addition to this transformation, the man also opened Veratus's mind to the reality of his existence, as the man had with the rest of his pawns.
Veratus was able to infiltrate Knight's army and climb up the ranks thanks to the assistance of the man, only to be left behind and forgotten once again once the man was able to get close to his true target. Disappearing and leaving a Roaring Knight in his place. Without the man, the cracks in Veratus's facade began to show and it didn't take long for the rat to be ratting out as a rat. the Knight's army tried to kill him, but something kept him from falling. The plants consuming his body wouldn't let him die. So instead, the opposing army cast the lone solider out. Exiling him back to a life of solitude.
Until another knight and their friends arrived in the kingdom...

Heyoo!
I have a request, itâs a bit of a long gif so if ya donât get to it or donât wanna do it, itâs fine lol.
Anyways, my idea / request / prompt / Echo x Fem!Reader goes like this, kinda, feel free to take liberties
Echo, now I feel like he would be a nervous kinda guy when it comes to having a crush. Like, he just doesnât know what to say and overthinks absolutely everything, and canât rly take a hint. Before he got blown up, there was a girl, who he has a liiiitle crush on n such, (idk you can make her a mechanic, doctor, bartender, whatever idm)
And they were rly good âfriendsâ n such r something, aaaand some time after he joins TBB he visits the old place where he used to reside with the other guys in the domino squad (I forget where *sob*) And sheâs is surprisingly still there. Heartfelt angsty ?kinda? Maybe reunion yadayadaydada and a bit after that and after catching up, probably a day or two later they pick up hints that they like each other and eventually confess n StUfF, aaand ya, then he has to go back with TBB and they be sad, he invites her to join but she is hesitant, and bc the other squad members donât even know her she ends up saying no- aaaaand ya-
( đ omg i donât even know anymore )
Idk itâs a very weird prompt, Iâm making this up as I go, so feel free to pick and choose, take or add, whatever u wanna do
Again if u donât wanna do it that is perfectly fine, just a thought. Love your work! <33
I Dream Of Forever
Summary: Summary: Youâve been a bartender on Rishi since you were old enough to take orders correctly. Echo was a Clone Trooper turned ARC Trooper stationed on Rishi who was a little more than friends with you. You legitimately believe heâs dead. But when a group of clones land on Rishi, you come face to face with the man you hoped would be your forever.
Pairing: TBB Echo x F!Reader
Word Count: 2201
Warnings: Some suggestive moments, but nothing detailed
Tagging: @trixie2023 @n0vqni
A/N: I thing I got the general vibe you want, but if I didn't please let me know and I'll do something else.
Youâve been a bartender at the same bar on Rishi since you were ten years old. Your parents had debts to the bar owner, and they sold you to make up for it. Well, you and your siblings.
Youâre the lucky one.
YourâŚowner? Guardian? Whatever he is, he treats you like a beloved granddaughter. He buys you clothes and food and allows you to go to schoolâŚand until you reached the age of majority at 18, you only had to work four hours a night four days a week.Â
He even paid for you to go to college, and he pays you well enough that you have your own home here on Rishi.
Youâre lucky.
Your older brother, you know, ended up becoming a gladiator in the Outer Rim, and last you heard heâs an enforcer for the Hutt Cartel. Your older sister, however, became a drug runner for a Spice Cartel and last you heard sheâs moving from rehab center to rehab center.
Youâre lucky.
Maybe if you repeat it often enough, youâll believe it.
All things considered, Rishi isnât the worst place to spend your life. The area you live in is warm and bright and right on the water. Not to mention youâve got several friends here that you would miss if you leftâŚor if the Empire decides to actually deal with the pirate problem.
Youâre not worried though.
The Republicâs war with the Separatists barely touched Rishi afterall, aside from having a single watch station that has been abandoned for years now.
And you donât expect that the Empire will push too much.
Your gaze drifts from the food stall that youâre visiting, lingering on the small, almost overgrown, old Republic comm station. Once upon there had been five men stationed there. Hevy, Droidbait, Cutup, Fives, and Echo.
While you had some concerns as to how the pirates of Rishi would react to obvious soldiers spending time in their barsâŚpeople were surprisingly okay with them. More than one of them getting an offer to join different crews.
A small smile lifts your lips at the memory of your boys laughingly turning down offers of pirate crew memberships.
The Dominos had been Rishiâs, more so than the Republics, and people raged when they heard that they died.
First when Droidbait and Cutup died, and then later when they heard that Hevy was killed on Kamino. And then even later when Echo was blown up, and then Fives was killed-
Fivesâ death was kind of the final straw for Rishi.Â
Even now, the Pirates of Rishi are more than happy to raid imperial vessels, in honor of their Dominos.
You step around a group of Mercs, all of whom have dominoes tattooed on their hands, and start to meander your way back to your home. You miss them. All of them.
But, if youâre going to be honest, you probably miss Echo the most.
He was a lot like his brothers, loud and boisterous, and always ready with a joke or a quip, or to finish a joke that his twin set up. He was always the first to greet you with a grin, and the last to say goodbye at the end of the night.
But, unlike his brothers, he flirted with you a little shyly, as though he wasnât sure what he was doing.
It was charming and sweet, and you found yourself smitten with him.Â
He didnât, quite, get over his shyness with you even after the first time you invited him into your home with tempting kisses. He was still a little shy even after the tenth time you invited him into your home, and your bed, with teasing touches and adoring kisses.
You wanted forever with him, and you thought, hoped, that he wanted the same.
And then he left, and you never heard from him again.
You suppose, in a way, it makes sense. Why would a soldier want to slum it with a bartender whoâs technically a slave.
Doesnât mean it doesnât hurt.
After all, you still dream of forever with Echo. Only now, your dreams are definitely castles in the air.
After all, dead men donât get happily ever afters.
âWe need to land somewhere,â Tech says to his brothers, a frown on his face, âThe damage to the ship isâŚfar too severe for me to repair without landing.â
âWhere can we land, though?â Wrecker asks, âItâs not like there are a large number of places that will accept us.â
Echo eyes the star map speculatively, âIâŚmay have an idea.â He offers, as his gaze lands on a specific planet. A bright smile dances across your memory, and a loving laugh echoes in his ears.
Heâs a kriffing fool.
Hopefully she wonât turn him away.
âWell?â Hunter prompts when Echo doesnât continue right away.
âI think we should go to Rishi.â Echo says slowly.
âRishi!â Tech sputters.
âThatâs a pirate planet, Echo.â Hunter says, âThey wonât react well-â
âDo you have a better idea?â Echo asks.
The room falls silent for a moment, and then Tech sighs, âIt is up to you, Hunter. Rishi is the closest planet we can land on.â
Hunter pushes his hand through his hair, âFine. Do it.â
An hour later, the Marauder lands on an open pad, and no one comes to the ship to speak to them. âIs thisâŚnormal?â Tech asks.
âYeah, pretty much.â Echo replies with a shrug, âWe should probably not wear our armor here,â He adds. Heâs already changed into civilian attire, and heâs somewhat anxiously rubbing his arm just over where his scomp is attached.Â
âWhy?â
âBecause our armor screams âclonesâ and Iâm not sure how the pirates will react to seeing clones now.â Echo replies dryly, âIâve heard rumors of Rishi based Pirates raiding Republic and Imperial transports lately.â
Hunter agrees that itâs a reasonable precaution, and they all hurriedly change into civilian attire, before they get off the ship, with Omega clinging to Wreckerâs hand. And then, almost as one, they turn to Echo.
Echo sighs and rubs the back of his head, and then he turns and heads deeper into the city.
Some things have changed, new people, new stalls, but most everything else is the same. He pauses in front of a specific bar, and peers in, his dark eyes scanning the faces of the bartenders for a moment, before he motions for his brothers to follow him some more.
âAre you lookinâ for someone?â Wrecker asks.
âYeah. Someone who, hopefully, wonât be too angry at me and will be willing to help.â Echo says.
âA friend?â Omega asks.
âYeah, something like that.â
Echo leads them away from the shops and docks, and over to a row of apartments. He scans the buildings for a moment, before he turns and heads to one of the smaller buildings, and he stops in front of a plain door, with flower boxes in the windows.
His lips curl up in a small smile, Fives made those flower boxes early one morning when he was hyped up on Caf. They were crooked and lopsided, but it looks like she kept them. Though it looks like she painted them. âWait here.â Echo says to his siblings, before he walks over to the door, and he knocks twice.
âJust a moment!â Her voice comes from the other side of the door, and Echo doesnât fight his smile.
She sounds exactly the same.Â
Stars, please donât let her be too mad.
The door slides open, âYes? Can I help yo-â She stops mid-sentence when she sees whoâs standing there, â...Echo?â
âYou grew your hair out,â Echo replies, a small smile lifting his lips, âIt looks good. You look amazing. Iâm sure you have a question or twenty, cyarâika-â
Echoâs not able to finish his sentence as she flings her arms around him and crashes her lips against his. His arms fold tightly around her and he immediately kisses her back, and itâs almost as if no time has passed at all.Â
If he focuses, he can almost hear Fives wolf-whistling and hear Cutup making lewd comments.
And then reality snaps back into place when he hears Techâs dry voice, âAh. That kind of friend.â
Echo carefully pulls back, and reaches up to gently cup her cheek, using his thumb to brush a tear away, âIâm sorry for not comming you, cyarâika.â
She shakes her head, âWe were told that you died.â She whispers, âFives saidâŚâ She trailed off, âAnd then Fives died, and, kriff, the death of the last Domino started a war between the pirates of Rishi and the Republic/Empire, why would you bring them here?â
âOur ship is damaged-â Echo started.
âGet in. In. All of you!â She drags Echo into her home, and she doesnât shut the door until Hunter is in the apartment as well. âHonestly Echo,â She rounds on him, âIf you commed I would have told you to go literally anywhere else.â
âI wasnât sure youâd answer.â Echo replies.
There are pictures of her with Echo, and with the rest of the dominoes on the walls. There are also pictures of her with a large, scarred man. And of her with a too slender woman.
âWhat do you need? I can probably get most of the materials sent to your ship.â She says.
âI have a list.â Tech offers as he hands her his datapad.
She copies it and sends the list to several of her friends, âAlright, you should have most, if not all, of what you need by the morning.â
âAre we in danger here?â
âOn Rishi specifically? No. Not so long as you donât draw attention to yourself.â She replies, âIâd offer to let you spend the night, but I donât have much room.â
âWe can stay on the ship,â Tech replies.
âEcho, are you going to stay here?â Omega asks.
Echo doesnât take his gaze off of his cyarâika, âIf Iâm allowed?â
âIâve never turned you away before.â She counters.
Echo smiles at her, âDo you remember the way back to the docks?â
âI remember.â Tech says, âCome on.â
The door opens, and then closes again, leaving Echo alone with his cyarâika.
She smiles at him, soft and warm and slow, âYou used to be shyer about public displays of affection.â
âI used to have legs and two hands too,â Echo replies, it's a weak joke, but a joke all the same. âIâm so sorry I never commed you.â He says after a moment, âI thoughtâŚit felt cruel, reaching out to you when I couldnât actually touch you.â
âItâs okay.â
âItâs not.â
âEcho. I forgive you.â She walks over to him and she kisses him as if no time has passed at all, all loving and soft and sweet.
Sheâs always been unfairly tempting. Her lips and her touch encourage him to stay and enjoy what sheâs offering. And Echo has always been helpless to deny her.Â
Heâs not surprised when he falls into her bed, her lips needy against his.
Later, much later, theyâre lounging in her bed, and Echo is trailing his lips across her bare shoulder.
âCyarâika,â He murmurs against her shoulder, âCome with me.â
âCome with you where?â She asks, her voice light and dreamy.
âOn the Marauder. Away from Rishi. Iâll protect you-â
She turns and looks at him, her smile so sad, âYou know I canât.â
âYou deserve so much better than being a slave for your parents' debts,â Echo whispers.
She rolls so that sheâs facing him properly, âEcho, your brothers donât know me. And if I had to guess, your ship is pretty small. Me going with you isnât fair to them.â
âYou deserve more.â Echo repeats.
âI donât like life is about what we deserve,â She replies, as she reaches up to cup his face, âSo, in the morning, youâre going to return to your ship, to your brothersâŚand youâre going to leave Rishi. And youâre going to go back to not comming me, and itâs just how itâs going to be.â
âNo.â
âEcho.â She sighs his name, and he shifts so heâs looking right in her eyes.
âNo.â He repeats, âIâve given up so much. My body, my batchmates, my twin. Iâm not giving you up. Let me be greedy. Just about this one thing.â
She sighs again, but she looks touched. âHow aboutâŚa deal?â
âWhat kind of deal?â
âMy contract with myâŚowner is coming to an end. At the end of the year, Iâll have made enough to pay off my parents' tab with him.â She says softly, âOn that day, I will comm you and come to where you are. No matter where you might be.â
âDo you promise?â
She laughs softly, âEcho, Iâve been dreaming of forever with you since the first day we met. Now that I have the chance to have it, it would take an act of god to stop me.â
Echo crashes his lips against hers, âI want forever too,â He breathes against her lips, âSo we have a deal.â
She smiles at him, âI love you, Echo.â
He blinks at her, momentarily surprised, and then he laughs and kisses her deeply, âI love you too.â

can i ask what the general lore for your au is? love me some good lore
I think Iâve done a pitch outline before thatâs covered some of this, but I can give you the basic background for reference! (Tumblr page search seems a bit broken the further back you get anyway)
Cybertron is an alien planet with a long history of strife. Following the reign of the Quintessons, a hostile and colonial alien species, and their eventual ousting, the remnants of a military-industrial state and its tyrannical caste system left only a matter of time before massive conflict erupted.
Cybertron: The original home planet of the Cybertronians, and the current territory of the Autobots. Cybertron is a very ancient planet formed around the remnants of an enormous organic âancestor,â whose blood and other material is extracted for use as food. This organic material is vital to the survival of all Cybertronians, and the most important component, Energon, is extremely highly coveted. It can be found sparingly in other parts of the universe (notably other early established Cybertronian space colonies), but without access to the original ancestor, or its sparsely documented relatives and protĂŠgĂŠ, it is unrenewable, which would inevitably mark the end of the Cybertronian race. Extensive industrialization on a global scale made Energon sparse, and an exhaustive global war only exacerbated this scarcity.
The Decepticons: Made up primarily of the former lower castes of Cybertron, the Decepticons are a mish-mash group of revolutionary mercenaries, banded together to end the tyrannical rule of Cybertron. Although they were originally known as the Ascenticons, they gained the derogatory name after their defacto âleader,â Megatron, permanently maimed her rival for the primacy, Optimus, during a political demonstration that turned violent. Optimus was famously left without a lower jaw, and the brutal scuffle was used to galvanize moderates against the perceived extremity of the group.
Now, having been largely driven off of Cybertron after a battle which devastated both sides., the fractured branches of the Decepticons struggle to find places they can recoup and regather amid the cosmos. Their primary squad, team Alpha, is currently drifting in space, eagerly anticipating the day it can find the resources to reestablish communication with what remains of the Decepticon army.
The Autobots: A faction formed out of the former military of Cybertron and its allies. Figureheaded by the stoic and personable Optimus Prime, the Autobots barely hold onto control of Cybertron, and seek to persist against the Decepticonsâ demands for radical reconstruction. Now made up of many of Cybertronianâs youth, plenty of Autobot soldiers arenât fully aware of what theyâre fighting for, and barely retain memories of life before the war. If the current course of the war continues, they hope to drive the Decepticons out of anywhere theyâve hidden until they surrender and concede.
The Present: With impassible stakes for everyone involved, if they want any hope of surviving and reclaiming Cybertron, the Decepticons must do the impossible: overcome their many differences and work as a team. Our story starts in the far reaches of space, where Decepticon Team Alpha is searching for resources and a temporary residence where they can begin to reestablish communication with their allies.
The members of Team Alpha include:
Megatron: the melancholic leader, whose reputation does not match her lethargic withdrawal.
Starscream: the second in command with a penchant for mutiny. Her disloyalty is kept a secret, for both Megatronâs sake and Starscreamâs.
Soundwave: the enigmatic and cynically self-important communications officer and third in command. Their speciality is espionage and information control, though they havenât seen much of it recently.
Lockdown: former bounty hunter turned medic. this mean-looking âCon might not be certified, but in a pinch, heâll patch you upâby any means necessary.
Knockout: the only thing worse than a mad doctor is his lackadaisical and negligent assistant. Knockout doesnât really believe the Decepticons will win, but his hate for the Autobots is stronger than his realism.
Breakdown: a bruiser-in-training rescued from a docked Decepticon warship. He and Blitzwing were the only trainees who survived being stasis fried. Albeit a strong and capable fighter, this âCon doesnât really have the âDeception gritâ yet.
Blitzwing: Breakdownâs fellow soldier. Though she was also trained to be a mercenary, Blitzwing lacks a lot of the natural talent for fighting Breakdown has. Her unrecognized skill lies in weaponsmithing, though Starscream hopes to make a competent combatant out of her yet.
Ravage: donât be fooledâthis weapon class Minicon only looks like a Cybercat. The eldest of Decepticon team alpha, this odd bot gave up his Cybertronian appearance to live out the laid back life of a lazy mechanimal. His powerful spark makes him Megatronâs weapon of choice.

Just Call Me And I'll Be There (3,090 Words)
Injured and on the run, Omega is forced to run to the first person she thinks of... but will that person be wiling to help her out after all of these years?
Set after the epilogue of the Bad Batch, exploring Omega's life in the rebellion! This will be a two-chapter fic and I'll make sure to tag the second chapter when it is completed!
As always, the link for my AO3 page is here and the link to my Tumblr masterlist is here.
I hope you enjoy!
--------
Omega was typically good at getting out of uncomfortable situations; the prospect of being captured was no stranger to her, so when the Empire had eventually caught up with her squad she had hardly been surprised. Luckily, none of them could trace her back to Hemlockâs experiments on Tantiss (thanks, Nala Se) so those holding her hostage just assumed that she was some washed up orphan that had joined the rebellion on a whimâŚ
⌠if only they knew the truth.
Needless to say, her escape had been pretty spectacular. Echo would have been proud if he could have been there to see the way the cruiser exploded as she flew away in a modified TIE fighter. He was still working on liberating clones, even though Rex, Wolffe and Gregor had retired years earlier. Age hadnât stopped the ex-ARC trooper from fighting for the rights of clones, and luckily Senator Chuchi was still standing strong and by his side.Â
If Omega had to be critical, the only downside of her escape this time was the nasty burn on the side of her leg from where sheâd dodged some explosive flames on her way out, combined with the blaster wound on her shoulder; luckily she had been wearing a disguise at the time of her capture, not her lucky jacket.
Still high on adrenaline and fear, the young woman had managed to punch in hyperspace coordinates and class her way to the nearest neutral planet she could think of: Ord Mantell.
She hadnât exactly been planning on going there, but it popped up on the navi-computer as being the closest by a long shot⌠Pabu was way too far for her to go now.Â
Landing on the planet hadnât been an issue, although some people had stopped and stared at her as she clambered out of the TIE fighter, ragged and bleeding. Where was she going to go now? Kriff, she hadnât thought this far. Hobbling out of the spaceport, she surveyed her surroundings as she tried to think of a plan of action. As long as she put space between herself and the ship she guessed it didnât really matter where she went. If this place had access to long-range comms and med-kit that would be even betterâŚ
A nasty thought filled her head and she swore quietly to herself⌠there was one place she could think of going to, not that it filled her with much joy. Realising that she didnât have much choice and that if she wanted to go under the Empireâs radar, sheâd need to rely on a friend.Â
If she could call this person a friend anymore⌠time would tell.
ââ
The last twenty(ish) years had not been particularly kind to Cid. After she had lost communication with the Bad Batch, she had been riddled with guilt. That guilt had only gotten worse when sheâd realised that the creepy scientist had been after Tiny and not her brothers. She had tried her hardest to put all of that behind her, until Phee had come knocking on her door.
The pirate had yelled abuse at her, calling her a coward and declaring that she had no right destroying the family of clones in the way that she did. Cid had made some below-the-belt comments about Phee and Goggles, snapping about how she was only acting this way because of his death.
Needless to say, Phee hadnât spoken to her since. Cid had lost one of the only people she could call a friend.Â
Then, six months later, a dangerously skilled clone had rocked up on her doorstep, threatening to burn down her bar if she didnât give him a way of finding Omega. So the kid had escaped? With the help of one of her brothers, sheâd later found out. Not that Cid was surprised. She guessed it mustâve been Bandanna whoâd rescued the girl; she was closer to being his daughter than his sister anyways.
Stuck in-between a rock and a hard place, Cid had said the only person she knew who might have contact with the Batch was Phee. Luckily for her, the clone had left, but not before firing a blaster bolt through her shoulder in an attempt to kill her.
After that, Cid heard nothing else about her ex-mercenaries, and she decided that was the way she liked it. She could run her bar undisturbed by clones and their issues. No whiny kids, no grumpy fathers, no loud, boomy brothers. No know-it-all clones who always interrupted her when she was talking⌠It was kinda quiet though.
That was until one day, nearly twenty years later, she was closing down the bar after a long night. The door beeped, a sign that the security code had been tapped into the keypad outside, and hissed open; it creaked a little, a sign that it needed oiling⌠or possibly outright replacing.
Cid scowled. She was the only person who knew the code to that door, so either someone had overridden it or it wasâŚ.
⌠surely not. She hadnât heard from any of them in years. If they were even still alive, why would they want to see her? She had betrayed them, sold them out to the Empire like they had been nothing to her. They hadnât meant anything to her⌠or at least she hadnât thought so until Tech had died. The day theyâd rushed into her bar, injured and broken, her heart had hurt for them. It had hurt even more so when heâd seen the distraught look on Hunterâs face as he stooped over Omegaâs injured form.Â
Shaking herself out of her thoughts and back into the present, Cid grasped the blaster that she had clipped to the bottom of the bar. The woman clicked it out of stun mode; whoever was coming into her bar, they werenât expected and they were unlikely to be friendly.Â
She could hear laboured footsteps coming down the steps and exiting the shadows. There, stood in front of Cid with blood oozing out of her shoulder and smelling a little bit like burning, was a young woman.
âLong time no see, Cid,â the girl said with a small smile that instantly sent the Trandoshian back in time.Â
âTiny!â
Blaster dropped to the floor and forgotten about, Cid moved around the bar and towards Omega. Upon closer inspection, she noticed just how bad the blaster wound was, and realised that the smell of burning was coming from the scorched fabric on her trousers. This kid had been through the wars.
âWhat happened to you, someone try to barbecue ya?â she asked as she glanced down at the burn on the girlâs leg. That was gonna need some serious bacta, and even then it might leave a mean scar. Omega rolled her eyes as she moved to a bar stool, sitting on it heavily.Â
âGot captured by Imperials,â she started to explain through gritted teeth. âHad to blow up their ship when I escaped.âÂ
Cidâs face must have held a bewildered look because Omega snorted humourlessly. âYou havenât changed much,â she muttered as she rested her head against the cool bar surface. She groaned as there was a pull in her shoulder but sighed contentedly as the cool metal met a bruise on her temple. Had she been hit around the head at one point? Who knew.Â
Cid stared at the young clone in front of her, still not quite believing her eyes.Â
âWhere are your posse?â she asked, moving back to the other side of the bar. She reached back and pulled down two glasses and a bottle of liquor. The kid looked old enough to drink now⌠stuff it, even if she wasnât, it would help ease the pain of her injuries.Â
âThatâs what I was coming to you about, actually,â Omega raised an eyebrow at the alcohol in her cup but didnât even flinch as she knocked it back like a shot. Cid shrugged and poured her some more.
âI donât know where your family are, kid, if thatâs what youâre asking.â The Trandoshianâs voice seemed to be filled with sympathy that Omega didnât know she possessed. She shook her head.
âI know where they are,â she replied. âI just need access to a long-range comm that I know will reach them undetected.â She looked at Cid pointedly. â⌠and a med-kit thatâs well stocked,â she added, knowing that Echo used to put things into Cidâs med-kit that probably hadnât been used since they were placed there. Out of date bacta was better than no bacta. âYou owe me after what you put me and my family through.â
Cid sighed, knowing that the girl was right. She could hardly turn her away, not after she had done exactly that years prior. She had betrayed the child and her brothers more times than she cared to admit⌠it was time to make good.
She lead Omega through the bar, still carrying the bottle of alcohol and their glasses, and sat her down in the office. There she went about looking for the med-kit; Omega had been right. It hadnât been updated since Echo had done it fifteen years ago. She sighed as she clicked open the box and began searching through it for what she needed.Â
âCommâs all set up,â the quiet voice of Cid broke the clone out of her concentration. âIâve rigged it so no one will trace your call.â
Omega nodded in thanks and watched as the Trandoshian left the office before turning her attention to the machine. She tapped in the code for her familyâs comm device on Pabu before sitting back and hoping that someone would be on the other end to pick upâŚ
The comm hadnât even rang three times before Hunterâs scowling face appeared.Â
âCid,â he started. âI donât know why youâre trying to call us after all these years butâŚâ his voice trailed off and cracked when he noticed who was on the end of the line.
âOmega!â he gasped, and the woman in question smiled a watery smile.Â
âHey, buir,â she croaked as she tried to hold back to onslaught of emotion she was experiencing upon seeing her father for the first time since before her capture.Â
Of course Hunter had questions. âWhy are you at Cidâs?â was the first, though it was swiftly followed by âare you hurt?â and âdo you need me to come and get you?â
Omega had given him the shortened version of what had happened leading up to and following on from her capture. Her buirâs eyes widened when she said that she had been hurt and gave him the brief rundown of her injuries.
Before too long, Hunter was saying goodbye, promising to be there soon to pick her up. He hung up the call, leaving Omega alone once more; all of a sudden the wave of emotion was too much for her and she burst into loud, heartbreaking sobs.Â
Cid, on hearing her crying, opened the door to the office and peeped in.Â
âYou okay, Tiny?â she asked, concern lacing her usually blunt voice. Omega nodded, but hissed in pain as she jolted her shoulder once more. The Trandoshian guessed that the call had been successful considering how long it had gone on for, and that one of Tinyâs brothers would be here soon. âLetâs get you patched up,â she carried on, walking further into the room and prying the med-kit out of the girlâs hands.
She worked in silence, carefully peeling away what fabric she could from Omegaâs burn as the young clone breathed through the pain. She then sprayed a bacta-laced freezing spray over the wound; Tinyâs shoulders eased up as she sighed a little with relief.Â
Then came the shoulder. All Cid could do was place out of date bacta over it and dress it neatly, hoping that it would stop bleeding soon.
âSorry there isnât more I can do, kid,â she muttered in apology as she stood away to admire her handiwork. Omega nodded, though her eyes were unfocussed and looked heavy. Cid swore quietly and waved a hand in front of the girlâs face.
âHey, Tiny,â she spoke a little louder, snapping Omega out of her slump. âI reckon youâre concussed. No nap time for you, at least not until one of your brothers turns up.â The woman in question nodded in response, not being able to bring herself to speak. She was so tired, surely a small nap wouldnât hurtâŚ
⌠âTINY!â Omega jumped out of her skin, hissing at the movement in her shoulder. âCome on, kid,â Cid grumbled. âYou gotta stay alive until Dark and Broody gets here. Iâm guessing heâs the one whoâs on his way?â
Omega nodded, a small smile on her face at the mention of her buir. Cid rolled her eyes; this kid had always been soft.
âHas he finally decided heâs your dad yet?â she asked sarcastically. âOr is he still pretending that his Jango Fett gene didnât activate?â
She turned to face the wounded clone, only to see a frown on her face.Â
âAfter my second escape from HemlockâŚâ Omega started slowly. âHunter said that we were free to be whoever we wanted.â She smiled fondly at the memory. It hadnât been long after that sheâd started calling him buir. She had been so nervous, petrified of being rejected, but she neednât have been. Hunter had practically burst into tears upon her asking permission to call him dad.
âHe chose to be a father,â she finished with a fond smile on her face. Cid nodded, somewhat impressed with the clone sergeant. When she had known him, he had seemed so emotionally stunted that she thought heâd never admit to Omega how he felt about her, but here the pair were. Father and daughter⌠Cid realised she should have guessed this from the red bandanna the kid wore around her head. Yeah, there was no confusion as to whose kid she was.
âIâm glad he came to his senses,â she commented, making Omega snort a little with laughter.Â
âYou sound like Crosshair,â she replied with a laugh. âHeâs the one who said I should talk to Hunter.â
Cid vaguely remembered the Batch talking about a Crosshair and she had assumed that he was one of their brothers, but had never met the man.Â
ââ
Hunter barrelled through the door of the bar four fours later looking frazzled and⌠older than Cid remembered. Of course, she didnât look the same, but she hadnât been expecting the small streaks of silver running through Dark and Broodyâs hair, or the way his battle-ready body had filled out⌠that probably came with being able to afford food, she thought to herself as she stood up to greet him.Â
Omega was getting tired again, her eyes drooping as she complained about the pain in her leg beginning to come back; Cid had kept her busy with a caffeinated drink and multiple games of Djerik. Of course the girl had won every single came, even concussed; as they played she wittered on about the time she had won nearly 50,000 credits whilst on the run with Crosshair.
âOmega!â Hunter ran to the young clone, not even looking at Cid. He crouched in front of her, ignoring the twinge in his knees. Checking over her injuries, he frowned as he noticed the gunshot wound, treated but still painful. It turned out that out of date bacta wasnât as effective as Omega had hoped.Â
âHey, buir,â she said in a voice that was suddenly choked with emotion again. âEverything hurts.â
Hunter breathed out a short laugh, though the concern on his face was still evident. âIâm not surprised, adâika,â he replied, cupping her cheek. âItâs okay though, Iâll get you home.â
Cid raised both eyebrows at the mention of âhome.â She had just assumed that the boys would still be wondering the galaxy. She was surprised that they had found somewhere safe enough to settle down.
She was broken from her thoughts by Hunter easing his kid to her feet and slinging her good arm over his shoulder. Omega hissed as the pair took an unsteady step forward, Bandanna whispering soothing words to her as a couple of tears leaked down her cheeks. The pain really had come back with a vengeance, huh.Â
As the pair reached the door of the bar, Hunter still having not knowledge Cidâs existence, Omega put her hand out to stop them both. She shuffled around, nodding at the Trandoshian.
âThanks, Cid,â she said and for what it was worth, she sounded genuinely grateful. Cid nodded in return at them both.Â
âSee you around, Tiny,â she replied. âYou too, Bandanna. Iâm glad you got to live your lives in peace. You deserved it.â
For the first time, Hunter looked at her. Cid could see the bitterness in his eyes, not that she could blame him. As he observed her, his eyes softened a little. She knew he was grateful that sheâd looked after his little girl. After everything she had put their family through, that was as much as she could ask for. The pair nodded at each other before Hunter re-adjusted his grasp on Omega. The pair shuffled out of the bar, slowly making their way back to their ship.
ââ
âYou were smart to go back to somewhere you know,â Hunter commented as he settled Omega in the co-pilotâs chair of his ship. His first move had been to give her a dose of pain medication; she had no idea when sheâd hit her head, but it was safe to say that she was coherent that Hunter wasnât worried about her falling asleep. As the pain medication kicked in she began to doze off. Her buir took the opportunity to re-dress her arm with bacta that would actually do its job, and put more spray on her burn before dressing that too.
âYou trained me wellâŚâ Omega slurred slightly, her eyes drooping. âMissed you, buir,â she added in a pitifully small voice as he finished up re-dressing her injuries. Hunter stood back to his full height and sighed at the sight of his grown-up daughter falling asleep in front of him. He stooped down and pressed a gentle kiss against her temple.
âMissed you too, âMega,â he whispered, not wanting to make her jump. He sat down in the pilotâs chair before tapping in the coordinates for Pabu. Upon entering hyperspace he finally breathed a sigh of relief; they were going home.

Notes: This is an expansion of the first section of my Tech Lives short story Lost and Found, and is told primarily from Echo's and Omega's perspectives. It started as a drabble to highlight Echo's/Omega's initial reactions to finding Tech, but my brain just wouldn't stop adding more details so... well, it is no longer a drabble đ

The Lost One
Echo walked into the rather small wooden cabin and glanced around. He was looking for Tintha's engineer/mechanic - the engineer who had become somewhat famous among certain circles not only for his brilliant skills but also due to his rather abrupt appearance on the codebreaking and data slicing scene in the past few years. Word had reached Echo's corner of the Rebel Alliance that not only was this engineer trustworthy and reliable, he could decrypt anything; and Echo needed this data decrypted if he wanted the intel necessary to free the small but influential rebel cell that had been captured by the Empire.Â
Echo was fairly certain he was in the right place - the cabin had clearly been converted into a workshop of some kind, with engines and wiring and computers and datapads and other projects in various stages of construction or repair scattered across every surface in some kind of organized chaos - but there was no one else to be seen...
"Do you require assistance?" a voice came from a back room.Â
The voice struck Echo as being eerily familiar, almost like... - but that was impossible, so he brushed the thought away.Â
"I'm looking for Nu," Echo replied.
"That would be me," the other said, rounding the corner and examining his client with a frank stare.
Echo had seen enough strange things in his lifetime that he thought he had long since reached the stage where nothing could surprise him. But this...
If he didn't know better, he would think this engineer was Tech. An older, scarred, limping version of Tech... Then again, if Tech had lived, he would be about the age of this man...Â
But Tech hadn't lived. He had sacrificed himself, shot the connecting strut of the rail car he was attached to in a desperate bid to let the rest of the squad escape. It had worked - the family had survived and even eventually got the Empire off their backs - but Tech had been lost. There was no way he could have survived that fall.Â
Shaking his head slightly to clear his thoughts, Echo forced himself back to the task at hand.Â
"I need the information on this data disk decrypted," Echo said, holding out the referenced item. "I was told you're the best person for the job."Â
"Your intel is correct," the one called Nu said, his face taking on an expression of interest as he looked at the disk, pushing his spectacles up the bridge of his nose. "There is nothing to date that I have not been able to decode."Â
It was like talking to a ghost - a living ghost. Which made absolutely no sense, even for a clone who had worked closely with superstitious Jedi. The voice, the mannerisms, the speech patterns, the looks... All of it was so reminiscent of Tech.Â
But Tech was dead.Â
I have got to get a grip on myself, Echo thought.Â
"I expect discretion with this," he stated.Â
"But of course, that's standard protocol."Â
For some reason, this reassurance alone was enough to prompt Echo to hand the disk over. "How long do you need?" he asked.Â
Nu slipped the device into a datapad and, after scrutinizing it for a moment, nodded firmly. "The job will be done within the hour. Shall we settle on a fee of 100 credits?"
"Fair enough." Actually, if Nu was as good as he claimed, this was a bargain. "I'll wait here, if you don't mind."Â
Nu nodded again, rather absently this time, his attention now fixed on the data as he stepped over to a nearby counter to do his work.Â
Echo wandered aimlessly along the workbenches, glancing at all the projects but with his mind too full of questions to really take note of anything.Â
It just wasn't possible. Even if Tech had survived, he would have found a way back to the squad, not hidden away for years on a backwater planet that didn't attract even the Empire's notice. He's not Tech. He's NOT Tech....
The villager who had led Echo to Nu's shop had cautioned him, "Nu is quite nice and very smart, but he is also... odd. Everyone likes him, but he keeps to himself and rarely talks about himself, always seems like..." the villager had waved his hand around his head vaguely before finishing, "I dunno, just odd." Echo could now see what the villager meant: confidence in his own skills notwithstanding, Nu seemed uncertain, unmoored, as if he wasn't fully present in the moment, as if... as if half his mind was constantly searching for information that was just out of reach, even as he expertly carried on with mundane tasks and conversations.
Telling himself he was being illogical and irrational wasn't enough. If something had somehow happened to prevent Tech from coming back to the squad, Echo had to know for sure - and he turned to face the engineer.Â
"So where are you from, Nu?" Echo asked in what he hoped was a casual tone.Â
Nu looked up at him and blinked. "Are you referring to my birth planet?"
"Yes."
"I... am not sure," Nu shrugged awkwardly.
"Uh, where's your family from, then?"Â
"I do not know," Nu replied. He was frowning now. "I don't remember any family."Â
"What do you mean?" Echo pressed, anticipation and dread and - was that hope? - building in his chest.Â
Nu seemed to briefly ponder whether he wanted to continue participating in this interrogation, before deigning to reply somewhat stiffly, "I was critically injured in an accident many years ago. I remember very little of my life before the accident, and nothing of any family."
Echo's mouth had gone dry, but he pressed on. "What do you remember of your life from before the... accident?"
It was abundantly clear that this was not a pleasant topic for him, but for some reason Nu didn't disengage from the conversation. Instead, he sighed resignedly as he answered, "Nothing that is of any benefit to me. None of it is clear or complete. I cannot even remember the accident itself. I must confess, it is quite unsettling to have dreams or flashes of what seem to be memories, but not recognize any of it."Â
"I can imagine," Echo said automatically in an attempt to be conciliatory; but he needed to know more. Everything Nu was saying was leading to one conclusion...
"When was your accident?" Echo asked now, drawing Nu's attention away from the device again.Â
Nu's sigh was more impatient this time. "Oh, about a year or two after the Empire was formed."Â
Echo's voice was still steady, but he could feel his heart pounding in anticipation. "Where did it happen?"
"On an Outer Rim planet called Eriadu."Â
It felt like the bottom fell out of Echo's stomach, and his mind went blank...
"Now, if you're quite finished with the questions, I can get on with the work you requested I complete," Nu hinted sharply.Â
Echo blinked - he was still human, despite the cybernetic implants, and he thought this moment was the closest he would ever get to feeling like he was physically rebooting. "Of... of course," he stammered. "It might be best if I wait outside."Â
Nu had already returned to his work, and didn't reply nor seem to give any notice to Echo almost staggering to the door.Â
Once outside, Echo leaned against the wooden framework, closing his eyes and breathing as heavily as if he had just outrun Imperial infiltrator droids, his mind swirling with the implications of the recent conversation.Â
Nu was Tech. He had to be. A man who looked, sounded, and acted like an older version of Echoâs former squadmate and had suffered and accident on Eriadu that had apparently left him with amnesia, and with all the timeframes matching? Echo had never been as good as Tech at calculating odds and risk, but he intuitively knew the odds that this man was Tech were far greater than the alternative.
I have to tell them, was Echo's first coherent thought; and then he corrected himself. I have to tell Omega.Â
He couldn't tell his brothers, not yet. Whatever the odds might be, Echo couldn't face the idea of telling Hunter, Wrecker, and Crosshair that their long-lost brother was alive when there was even the slightest chance he was mistaken. He had to be absolutely certain that his suspicions were correct. Besides, it was clear that Nu - Tech - wanted to regain his memories, wanted to know who he had been before; but he would want solid proof of his identity, more than what at this point amounted to no more than (very) strong circumstantial evidence, and Echo would have to gain Nu's trust if he wanted to have any hope of assisting with this objective. And Echo had the feeling that it would be best to give Nu some space to regain his memories before raising the family's hopes...
"It's finished," Nu said, dragging Echo away from his contemplations and gesturing for Echo to follow as he stepped back into the workshop.Â
The engineer handed Echo the original disk as well as the datapad, stating simply, "The data in its decrypted form is downloaded onto the datapad. It will be easier to decipher that way. Now, about payment..."
"Will you meet with a colleague of mine?" Echo suddenly burst out. Events during the recent rebel conflict had made Echo wary about revealing to strangers his familial ties to Omega, and with force of habit prevailing, it was too late to correct it now. "She's a pilot named Omega, and she needs help with a rather complicated task."
If Echo had been hoping the name âOmegaâ would jog Nu's memories as Tech, he was disappointed. No hint of recognition crossed Nu's face, but his expression did become inflexible, surprising Echo.Â
"I will meet your colleague," Nu replied, "but I must inform you that while I sympathize with the Rebel cause and will assist you in these tasks, I am not interested in committing to the Rebellion."
Echo, taken aback, attempted to save face. "Who said this is for the Rebellion?"Â
"It's obvious," Nu deadpanned, clearly unimpressed by the other's feeble protest.Â
Echo sighed. There were signs Tech - Nu - had changed somewhat over the years, whether from time and experience alone or from the loss of memories, it was impossible to say. But Echo still felt inclined to trust him; and besides, it was a rebel who had recommended Nu's services anyway.Â
"This isn't an attempt to recruit you," Echo promised, before blurting out the idea that had been circling in his mind. "And maybe... maybe we can help you figure out who you are, in exchange for your help."
Nu scrutinized him for several breathless moments before responding. "Very well," he assented. "When shall I expect your return?"
"Within the next few rotations or so," Echo replied as he handed over the promised payment.Â
"That is not very specific."Â
Echo almost smiled. "Now you know what us rebels are like."
Nu shrugged. "I suppose it doesn't matter, as I have no plans to relocate anytime soon."
Echo nodded, even as the thought flitted across his mind that he hoped there might be reason for plans to change in the near future.Â
He wasted no time in contacting Omega, opening comms as soon as he stepped into his ship. As usual, he couldn't help but smile at the sight of Omega's bright face, though the shock of the recent revelation must have still weighed heavy on his face, for Omega instantly furrowed her brow.Â
"What happened?" she asked.Â
Echo sidestepped the question for the moment. "Have you completed the Sindoni mission yet?"Â
Omega huffed out a breath. "Not yet. All of our attempts have failed."
"There's someone I'd like you to meet who I think will be able to solve the problem." He took a breath, preparing to reveal the news, but Omega spoke first.Â
"You're a lifesaver, Echo! Where should I meet you?"
"I need to get this intel back to my people, but we can meet in a few days on the planet Tintha, in the Torus system. I'll send you the coordinates. And... Omega? The person you'll be meeting? It's... Tech."Â
****
Omega landed next to Echo's vessel, briefly closing her eyes and taking a deep, calming breath.
She knew Echo would never tell her anything he wasn't sure of... But the idea that Tech had survived and was still alive had been so difficult to grasp that even now, after acknowledging that the evidence Echo presented led to one distinct possibility, she couldn't accept it.Â
She had agreed with Echo that they should wait to tell the others - partially because she herself still couldn't believe it.Â
She had always been an optimist, hoping for the best - but THIS hope seemed so far beyond the realm of possibility, it was wrenchingly painful to even consider.Â
Perhaps this disbelief was why she had remained so calm the past few days as she had prepared to meet her rebel brother on Tintha. Now, however, the butterflies that had woken in her stomach threatened to steal her composure. These weren't the slightly anxious yet giddy butterflies that accompanied significant but relatively low-consequence events like first dates or public speeches or talking to her brothers about getting her own ship. No, these were far more violent butterflies, doing wild acrobatics that made her stomach awfully queasy and her head woozy and her legs weak. Â
She wasn't her brothers' kid for nothing, though: no matter how on edge the anticipation was making her feel now, no one looking at her would ever guess how she was truly feeling as she steadily and confidently strode off her ship to meet Echo, giving him a warm hug before letting him lead the way down the quiet, dusty street to the cabin workshop that apparently housed Tech.Â
Tech, possibly found alive after all these years of being presumed dead.Â
"Just go with the flow," Echo said in an undertone as they neared their destination. "We're just here for me to introduce you and for you to ask if he can help with your squad's problem. Remember, he goes by the name Nu now. I don't think it's time yet to tell him our suspicions."
Omega nodded - she and Echo had been over this several times, but she knew her brother was still processing this turn of events just as much as she was.Â
She didn't realize just how tightly she was wound, bracing herself for disappointment, until she caught sight of Nu... And the sudden shocked hope that welled up inside her nearly made her knees buckle.Â
"Hello again, Echo," the engineer called to them.Â
The face, the features, the voice, the frank and clear gaze... Even the clear evidence of serious past injuries only served to bolster the theory that this man was...
"Hey, Nu. This is Omega, the pilot I was telling you about," Echo said casually.Â
Her brain was screaming ECHO'S RIGHT; outwardly, however, she greeted the man who was very likely her brother as she would a new acquaintance she was meeting for the first time, which was rather easy to do given that he approached her the same way.Â
She had developed such a strong bond with Tech... but right now she was meeting Nu, and Nu didn't know her.
What if he wasn't Tech...?
If he wasn't, the universe was as cold, cruel, and unfeeling as Crosshair often claimed it to be.Â
She swallowed her heartache and the sharp disappointment that so closely followed the surge of hope, managing a friendly smile as she grasped Nuâs proffered hand. "Pleased to meet you," she said in a tone that thankfully came out as calm and even as Echo's had been.Â
"Likewise," Nu replied. "Now, what was this project your colleague described as 'complicated'?"
Omega cleared her throat. "We need to find a way to tap into an Imperial communications relay undetected."
"Almost any droid could do that," Nu returned somewhat dismissively. Looking openly at Echo, he added, "Given your cybernetics, you could likely do that."Â Â
Omega shook her head. "We need to install the software for the data tap remotely. All our infiltration efforts have failed; this is our last and only option. And the target is a major relay hub processing intel from multiple sectors, so there are more than the usual layers of security and encryptions to breach..."
"Ah, that is a challenge," Nu said; and Omega's spirits sank when his eyes, which had been gleaming with interest, now took on a faraway look.
"Are you saying it can't be done?" she faltered.
The distant look faded as Nu's attention snapped back to her. "Oh, it can. Though it will take me a day or two. And you must be aware that chances are high the program will eventually be discovered by Imperial security sweeps, though I can assure you it will take quite some time for them to detect it."Â
Omega grinned, relieved; she had come here to verify Echo's suspicions that he had found Tech, but accomplishing a major mission objective that had frustrated her entire division for months was also a win. "That will be fine."
"I assume you have more information regarding the location and security details of the relay in question?"Â
"Yes, I do," she assured him as she passed over the datapad with the requested intel. "How much do we owe you?"Â
Nu, suddenly hesitant, glanced somewhat helplessly at Echo. "I was under the impression that you may be able to assist me in discovering my former identity," he said stiffly.Â
"And so I can," Echo replied promptly. He had already discussed this plan with Omega, and she was happy to let him explain the details. "A blood sample and a scan of your wrist will be a good place to start."Â
Nu glanced down at his wrist. "I've run my blood sample against a few databases before, but I never considered the possibility that I would have any implanted identifiers..." he said thoughtfully.Â
"We're not sure you do," Echo answered. "There were some populations pre-Empire who had identifying chips as a standard, though. Worth a shot to scan for one. Even if you have one, it might take a while for me to run it through some of the older databases."Â
"Very well then. Shall I provide you with the required samples now?"
"No time like the present," Echo replied.Â
Only a few minutes later, Omega found herself following Echo back to his ship. Nu had indeed been implanted with an identifying chip, though it would take Echo some time to access the old clone databases and run the chip data against the entries. Her brother strode along as calm and confident as ever; she, on the other hand, was caught in an excruciatingly uncertain limbo between hope and despair, and it was leaving her feeling drained.Â
"Echo, what if it isn't him? And what if it is? He didn't even recognize us at all," she blurted, unable to keep the disappointment out of her voice.Â
Echo paused in the middle of the deserted path leading to the outskirts of the village, turning to look at her. "Steady, Omega. One step at a time. We need to verify his identity first. No point focusing on what ifs."
Echo was so much like Tech in this regard: taking everything in stride, adapting so readily to any and all surprises, and so rarely getting flustered. She admired this about him, especially since she didn't fully understand how he managed it.Â
"How can you take this all so calmly?" she sighed.Â
Echo paused, considering her question. "Because whatever the results of these tests, we're going to have our work cut out for us later to help him," he replied, before resuming the trek back to the ship.Â
****
Omega hadn't been planning on returning to Nu's until tomorrow - he had said he would need at least a day to complete the job, after all, and she didn't want to bother him - but after several hours of fruitless waiting on Echo's ship, then trying unsuccessfully to catch a nap on her own ship, followed up by some time wandering aimlessly around the tiny village and smiling back at the curious and overall friendly residents, she found herself walking through the threshold of the little shop again and looking around for the owner, stepping to the side to dodge a young boy exiting the cabin holding what appeared to be a power coil for a stove.Â
She spied Nu seated at the corner of one of the long workbenches, various apparatus having been pushed to the side to give him room for his current project. Omega saw her datapad was connected to two other pieces of equipment she didn't know the names for as Nu studied another screen, occasionally tapping on a second datapad.Â
Nu didn't look up, but he must have noticed her, for he now spoke. "I take it you have memorized the layout of the settlement? Hedi was telling me just now that you made no fewer than three full circuits of the village."
Omega chuckled a little self-consciously. "I think it might have been five. Your village is rather... small, and there's not much else for me to do right now."
Now he looked up, considering her for a moment before saying, "This job will be completed sooner if you feel inclined to assist. It will also help pass the time for you."
She hadn't been expecting this, but she needed no further invitation. Pulling a stool up to the workbench, she sat and faced him. "How can I help?"
Nu slid several tools and a small rectangular gadget towards her. "This adapter needs rewiring to be compatible with the computer model you specified you will be using to upload the spike. Do you know how to do that?"
She picked up the adapter and examined it for a moment before nodding. "Yes."
"Good," and with that, Nu returned to his work.Â
She set to work herself, while thinking back to the countless times before when she had helped Tech with his projects...
This was so similar, yet so different. Tech, prone to being equally absorbed in his work, had still passed the time they spent working together fielding Omega's sundry questions and keeping up a steady conversation with her. Nu, on the other hand, was so quiet, hadn't yet shown any hint of Tech's quick wit and sardonic humor and tendency for banter, and was somehow intently focused on his work while simultaneously distracted. He seemed... lost.
Nu was so much like Tech, yet not quite Tech... He couldn't be, he didn't remember any of Tech's life - or at least, as he had told Echo, the very little he did remember made no sense to him.
She didn't want to interrupt him, but she couldn't help speaking.
"Echo says you lost your memories."
"Yes, I had assumed he told you."
"You... You had no idea who you were when you woke up from your accident?"
"Well, I intuitively had a general idea of my identity as an adult human male, and I knew how to talk and perform basic mobility functions, but I had no recollection of my name or family or skill set or previous life. My general knowledge of facts about the galaxy returned with very little prompting, and skills such as these" - gesturing vaguely around the room - "seemed to come naturally to me. I assume I acquired them before I was injured."
"But... No idea of your name? Your home? Your... Your family?"Â
"No."
Something seemed to shift in him with this admission, the sense of loss becoming almost tangible, and Omega's heart nearly burst with sympathy. Whether he was actually Tech or not, Nu had somehow managed to regain so much of himself, but it wasn't enough. There was still something missing.Â
"You don't just want to know your former identity. You really want your old memories back, don't you?"Â
Nu paused but kept his eyes fixed on his work as he replied slowly, carefully considering his words, "I am who I am. Recalling my previous name or place of birth or prior occupations will be welcome knowledge - it will be a relief to no longer be ignorant of such an extended period of my own life. But that knowledge likely won't change my nature or who I have grown to be. However, there were people in my old life who were important to me - of that I am certain. Above all else, I want to remember them. I want to discover if they are alive and well now. The tribe on Eriadu cared for me, the people here on Tintha are welcoming; but what family I may have had, I want to know them."
She looked away to hide the tear that escaped down her cheek, but she needn't have worried: Nu didn't look up. Taking a few moments to steady her voice, she finally said, "Well, we'll find out who you are, and then you'll be able to find your family. I'm sure of it."
Shaken out of his reverie, Nu straightened and refocused his attention on the apparatus in front of him. "You're an optimist, then," he observed mildly.Â
Omega couldn't help but grin. "Yes, I suppose I am."
"Well, let us hope your optimism proves to be reality."
She smiled somewhat sadly now as she turned back to the adapter.Â
Indeed, all they could do was hope.Â
****
The results left no room for doubt: both the blood tests and the chip scan matched the identity of one particular clone.Â
"Oh Force, it's him, it's really him," Omega breathed - and suddenly the dam burst.
She was weeping, sobbing so hard she could barely catch her breath, as the flood of emotions - ecstatic joy and fully realized hope and the relief of certainty, mingled with sorrow and regret for lost time - filled her to capacity and overflowed.Â
Tech was alive. Her brother was alive! And, all things considered, he was relatively well, and had managed to recover enough to build a life for himself. This was nothing short of a miracle.Â
But... he had been lost for years. He was respected here and had some caring neighbors - of course he did - but no family. And despite the life he had built, he had clearly struggled with the knowledge that there was so much he didn't remember - so many people he didn't remember.Â
And while she and Echo knew who he was, there was no guarantee this information would help Tech remember who he was and who had been important to him.Â
Forcing the flood of tears to subside with no small amount of effort, she managed to speak again. âWe found him. He lived, and in this whole wide galaxy, we found him. Itâs⌠itâs a miracle.â She actually chuckled a little. âWhen we help Tech get his memories back, Iâm going to ask him to calculate the odds of this happening. Well, what do weâŚâ The question died on her lips as she turned to Echo and saw the stricken look of remorse on her brother's face.Â
"Echo, what's wrong?" Why wasnât he happy about this? He set his expression back into its usual stoic lines. "Nothing."Â
"Yeah, thatâs a lie."
He shook his head. "Really itâs nothing. I'm fine."
She fixed him with a stern look. "Echo, you trusted me enough to invite me to join the Rebellion. You can tell me about this. What's wrong?â
He gave her a small smile, which softened his features just enough that she decided to stop pushing him. âNothing is wrong. Tech is alive â this is impossibly good news.â He sighed. "Now we just have to figure out how to break this news to him.â
Omega shook her head slowly - it didn't feel right to just walk in to the shop and tell Nu that he was a deviant Fett clone named Tech. "He doesn't just want to know facts about himself. He wants to remember his family."
"It's like you said, Omega: he didn't recognize either of us."
"Well, we have changed a bit since he last saw us," she pointed out, willing herself to ignore the painful clenching in her gut that always accompanied the memory of Tech falling out of sight...
"Hmmm..." Echo rubbed his chin in thought. "Do you still have Tech's old goggles with you?"
"Of course," she said promptly. "They're in my ship, right on the piloting console. What do you have in mind?"
"If the goggles themselves aren't enough to jog his memory, ask him to help you recover the recorded data.â
She frowned. "But I already recovered... Ohhh!" she broke off, grinning as understanding dawned. "Echo, you're brilliant!"
"Well...."
"Give me a minute," she said, already picking up the devices Nu - Tech - had given her and making her way toward the ramp. "I need to ask Anton to come here to pick up the materials for the communications tap, and tell my commander I'll be on leave for a while."Â
"Won't your division need your help with the mission?" She could hear the frown in Echo's voice, and turned back around to face him while walking backwards off the ship.Â
"This was the hard part," she countered, waving the gadgets at him. "If they need my help to install this program from the safety of our own base, we're in a lot more trouble than I ever thought. I'll be right back, don't go to Tech's without me!" And with that, she ran off.Â
****
Echo, sitting on the narrow wooden bench set along the wall and watching Omega and Tech pull up more recordings on the holoprojector, marveled at events of the past few hours.Â
Somehow, the goggle suggestion had worked. Just seeing the old Clone Force 99 picture had been enough to help Tech recognize Omega, and this had been enough to open the floodgates to memories of his life before the catastrophe on Eriadu. One would think this would be overwhelming, but Tech had taken it all in stride.Â
Then again, this was Tech. Of course he had taken it all in stride.Â
Tech had asked about Hunter, Wrecker, Crosshair, Rex, Phee, Shep, Lyana, and a few others from Pabu; beyond revealing the basics regarding Crosshair's return to the family and reassuring him that everyone was safe, however, Omega had opted against inundating Tech with more details. "Let's focus on you getting your old memories back before we fill you in on the last decade," she had said; and when Echo had agreed with her, Tech hadn't argued further.
Echo now saw Omega stifling a yawn, and he leaned forward. "Omega, we've been at this for hours, and I don't think you've slept in days. Go get some rest."Â
Omega shook her head stubbornly, with an expression that highlighted her resemblance to her equally stubborn brothers. "I don't need..."
"Perhaps it would be best for me to take a brief respite, too," Tech put in mildly.Â
She sighed, relenting reluctantly. "Fine."Â
"There are some cushions and blankets in the other room," Tech continued. "You can rest there, if you decide against returning to your ship."Â
"I'll do that," she smiled brightly. "Thank you, Tech!" And she bid them good night, leaving her brothers sitting in pensive quiet.Â
Tech was the first to break the silence. Â
"Did you and Omega join the Rebellion at the same time?"Â
Echo shook his head. "No. I worked with a rebel cell for several years before mentioning to Omega that the Alliance needed pilots. Hunter might forgive me for that, someday," he finished gruffly.Â
Given Tech's small smile, Echo guessed he remembered how protective Hunter had always been of their sister, and was perhaps relieved to know that some things hadn't changed.Â
"Given what Omega said about your success on Tantiss, I assume you were also involved in the events that have become known as the clone rebellion,'" Tech said now.Â
Echo raised a brow. "How did you...?"
"Tintha may be sparsely populated and well outside the notice of the Empire, but we are not entirely cut off from news of happenings in the wider galaxy," Tech responded dryly, to which Echo chuckled. "Was Rex part of that uprising, too?"Â
Echo nodded, but somehow the mention of Rex and the clone rebellion brought to the surface the needling remorse he had tried to hide from Omega, and he found that he couldn't speak as several seemingly unrelated events coalesced in his mind.Â
Rex and Tech had been the ones to free Echo from his captivity, the first friendly faces Echo had seen upon being released from cryostasis. Tech had been the one to take the lead in convincing Hunter to allow the squad to join Echo in infiltrating Eriadu to find Hemlock's base, arguing that they didn't leave their own behind. The lesson Echoâs original squad had learned as cadets, never leave anyone behind, had become an integral part of him; and his drive to do more, to help all his clone brothers as much as he could, had led him to not only free the prisoners on Tantiss, not only help Rex save those they could from being trapped in service to the Empire, but also be a key driver in the push for clone rights that had led to a full-scale uprising.Â
He had done all of this for his brothers; and all the while Tech had been abandoned, left behind to recover as much as he could from a fall that had stolen his memories, left behind to fend for himself, all alone with no familiar face, no one to help remind him of who he had once been.
Echo knew his guilt was unreasonable, his shame misplaced, knew he wasnât to blame for Techâs loss, knew no one in the family was to blame for Techâs loss. And yet⌠when Tech had fallen, they had left, they had all assumed the worst and Echo had recognized the futility of going back later to check and therefore had said nothing of it, and then they had taken Hemlockâs word for it â Hemlock, a man who had every reason to lie to them â they had just accepted his proof, no questions asked.
He knew that if he had shared these feelings with Omega, she would have pointed out that he had never and would never hold Rex culpable for assuming he was dead and moving on, especially in the middle of a combat zone; and she would have been right, which is why he hadnât bothered telling her. Before now, he had never understood why Rex had felt any measure of guilt over Echoâs captivity â after all, it wasnât his brothersâ fault for concluding he had died in an explosion that definitely should have killed him, and as soldiers they knew how to honor the dead while moving forward.
But all these truths were not enough for Echo to rid himself of the guilt he now felt for all Tech had suffered.Â
"Tech, I'm sorry."Â
His brother looked nonplussed. "For what?"Â
"For leaving you behind."Â
Tech blinked. "I expected nothing else." Realizing, likely from Echo being unable to hide a wince, that this remark hadn't been reassuring, Tech sighed and continued on in the tone he had always used when he was explaining something he thought should be obvious: "I fell and took the rail car with me so you all could live and escape, not so you could be captured trying to retrieve my remains."Â
Echo gave an involuntary shudder. "You... you really expected to die?"
"I knew it was the most likely outcome. The fact that I did survive would seem to indicate that at least one of several plans I had devised in an effort to escape the inevitable proved successful. I cannot recall what the plan was, but... perhaps that is for the best." He was quiet for a moment before regarding Echo again. "You did what I wanted you to do, Echo. You lived. You helped the others live. You ensured the risk I took was worth it. If you hadn't escaped... well, it's quite possible we wouldn't be here, together, right now."Â Â
The ghost of a smile crossed Echo's face. "Omega said she'd be asking you to calculate the odds of you surviving and us finding you."Â
"That's easy," Tech instantly replied. "Approaching infinity to one, against."Â
"I guess she's right in calling this a miracle."Â
"I would consider that an apt description," Tech nodded solemnly. He briefly fell silent again, before adding, "Though, considering what happened on Skako Minor, I would term it a coincidence - an unlikely one, but a coincidence nonetheless - that you in particular are the one who found me."
This observation â two clones, both presumed dead, both inexplicably surviving, each playing a significant role in finding and rescuing the other â left Echo stunned, and he was silent for some time as Tech returned his attention to the holoprojector.Â
Echo had once heard a Jedi say, "The Force works in mysterious ways, far beyond our ability to comprehend." Echo wasn't sure any Force was actually at work here, but he did know many occurrences in his life were far beyond his ability to comprehend, and this was one of them.Â
However, regardless of how circumstances had aligned this way, he found that he was grateful. Grateful that Tech had given them the chance to live, that his sacrifice hadn't been in vain. Grateful that Tech himself had survived the fall. Grateful that others - strangers - had cared for his brother enough to allow him to recover and thrive. Grateful that he, Echo, had come to Tintha to seek the services of a relatively unknown yet respected engineer. Grateful that he had heeded the feeling to probe for answers rather than convincing himself to stay silent. Grateful that Tech had wanted to remember, and now remembered. Grateful that Tech still loved them. Grateful to have Tech as his brother.Â
And with so much to be grateful for, he found there was very little room left for guilt.Â
Tech had been found, and he wouldn't be left behind again.Â
****
Echo had joined Omega in the other room to rest several hours ago, but Tech was still wide awake. He had long since stopped going through his own old recordings, though, opting instead to take some time to sit with the recollections he had regained thus far.Â
They hadn't all returned yet, but the flashes of memories he had had before, suddenly given context, now made sense, were recognizable; and the more he sat in thought, the more the details of the memories became clear and connected to other threads of memories that began to expand in their turn, bringing with them the meaning and purpose and need to know that he had been seeking for so long. Â
Memories, his memories, filling with light and blazing color a space in his mind that had been achingly dark for some time, filling with warmth and comfortable serenity a void in his heart that had belonged to those loved ones whose names and faces he had forgotten but now remembered with blessed clarity.Â
What's more, those loved ones still lived. He had calculated correctly; his gamble had paid off.Â
He had told Omega that knowing his name wouldn't change his nature, and he had been right. Knowing now who he had been before, he recognized that over the years since Eriadu he had somehow managed to reclaim himself, much more successfully than he might have ever hoped; on a fundamental level, he had always been himself. But hearing his name, Tech, spoken by one of those individuals whose kinship and familial love he had held most dear - not only had this been the spark that reignited his old memories, it had indeed wrought a significant change in him.
For the first time since he had woken on Eriadu, he felt whole.Â

Warning:Â Rough sex, spoilers to suicide squad and all around sarcastic humour! Donât like donât read.

*****
You walked through the room after another set, making your way to the bar. You stop for a few people who wanted to tell you how great you performed tonight but eventually you made it over to Cami. Once she turned to see you she grinned from ear to ear before pouring you a whiskey.
âGreat set today.â Cami complimented as she slid over your drink.
âThank you honey. Howâs your night going?â You questioned, sipping your warm whiskey. You drank warm whiskey because it helped keep your voice loose when you were singing. As much as youâve never liked whiskey it helps. You preferred a good red wine, however it always closed you throat so you tried to stay away from it completely, for fear of losing your voice.
âItâs good but Marcel was looking for you earlier.â She grunted before sliding someone a beer.
âThat I was.â You heard Marcelâs smooth husky voice behind you say.
âWhat can I help you with Marcel?â You turned coming face to face with not only Marcel but also Niklaus. You rolled your eyes when he shot you a pantie melting smile.
âI need a spell.â Marcel whispered in a sickly sweet voice.
âYou mean Niklaus needs a spell.â Gritting you teeth you got up and walked up to Niklaus.
âNiklaus darling if you want a spell, be a man and ask yourself.â You smirked up at him when his jaw clenched.
âVery well love. I need a spell.â
âIâll think about it. For now would either of you gentle care to dance before my next set?â I grinned cheekily up at Niklaus who was a lot taller than you, even in heels. Marcel grabbed you hand, dragging you to the dance floor silently. You were dancing with Marcel until your next set, afterwards making you way to Niklaus and Marcel.
âRight Iâll do the spell but Iâm going out with Cami, Rebekah and Hayley tonight so come see me tomorrow.â You smiled as Hayley and Rebekah made their way through the doors. You looked over at Klaus who was slowly making his way over to you.
âWhere are you going?â Nik looked at Hayley and Rebekah as he spoke but you knew he was talking to you just as much.
âWeâre going to the new club that was opened yesterday.â Cami spoke as she appeared behind Klaus.
âYouâre goingâŚ.clubbing?â His eyes were wide like heâd never heard something so stupid. You rolled your eyes before dragging Cami out, knowing Hayley and Bekah would follow.
You knew your group of friends was a little strange but that didnât stop you all. One human, one witch, one original and one hybrid. Really itâs possibly the scariest group of female in the quarter. But thatâs what was great about your group of friends. We never had to hide anything from each other.
Everyone was in a long que when you arrived but Bekah soon got us inside, compulsion can be handy sometimes. As you walked in you were shocked by the fact it was very different from any club near or in New Orleans. It was quite well lit for a club but the shocking aspect was the poles and cages around the room that contained half-dressed dancing females. You glanced over at Bekah who was nodding like it was good enough, Cami who had the same expression as you and Hayley who had a grin on her face.
âJesus who owns this place?â Cami choked as she saw a guy getting lap dance.
âThat would be me.â You heard a playful voice speak from behind you.
âKOL!?â Bekah and Hayleyâs expression now matched yours and Camiâs.
âI may have watched Suicide Squad one too many times.â Kol voiced like it was the best excuse for why he opened what was basically a classy strip club. Cami looked at him with confusion which made me answer the unspoken question.
âItâs a DC film.â You supplied.
âKol watched it three times in a week.â Rebekah added.
âI do not need to know what you do in your spare time.â You sighed before massaging your temples softly trying to sooth the head that was currently sneaking in.
âHey Y/N you could totally be a great Harley Quinn to Nikâs Joker!â Kol cooed at you teasingly.
âI couldnât agree more! Especially with that Jersey accent.â Bekah snorted sarcastically.
âI will give you a witchy migraine Rebekah. Iâm not as sick as Harlequin and Nik is worse than the Joker.â You growled before storming off towards the bar, you stood at the bar thinking about the jokes everyone had thrown at you but you knew they were right. You were a lot like Niklaus and you could be just as sick as him sometimes. Cami always said it was deep rooted issues from my past but you always waved her off saying you were fine. You knew it was mainly the accent that made everyone joke about it though so you ignored them. Once you got the bartender attention you ordered a cocktail sipping the red liquid once it arrived.
When a song from the suicide squad soundtrack came on you literally face palmed the bar surface. You knew immediately it was Kolâs doing, you slammed your glass down and decided to dance anyway. As much as you hate the constant Harley Quinn jokes you loved the film and soundtrack. You saw the girls dancing so you joined them smiling as Hayley patted you back in a comforting way.
âIâm fucked up, Iâm black and blue. Iâm build for it, all the abuse.â You sang along as you danced with Bekah. After the song had ended I felt someone pat on my shoulder I turned to see Kol who was smirking.
âPuddinâs here and he says itâs urgent.â Kol joked but you knew who he meant. You rolled your eyes and followed Kol silently. Once you spotted Niklaus you noticed his face was not one of a happy Klaus.
âWait before I leave. Say it?â Kol asked as we arrived in front of Niklaus who now looked highly confused.
âWhich scene?â You snapped your teeth clenched as the words came out.
âThe electrocution scene!â Kol grinned happily, he had the biggest crush on Harley Quinn which he always got teased about but he didnât care.
âWhat are ya gonna do ya gonna kill me Mr.J?â You looked at Kol waiting for him to leave.
âOh Iâm not gonna kill ya...Iâm just gonna hurt yaâŚReallyâŚReally bad.â Kol smirked at you and waited for your response. You rolled your eyes but responded anyway.
âYa think so? Well I can take it.â Your accent thick and once Kol preened at how he once again had gotten his own way he walked off. I turned back to Niklaus who was trying not to laugh but failing miserably.
âDid you justâŚQuoteâŚ.H-Harley Quinn?â Nik gasped between laughter.
âDid you just admit to watching Suicide Squad?â You retaliated with a smirk gracing you face and he soon stopped laughing.
âAww is Klausy embarrassed?â You mocked putting on your sickly sweet Harley Quinn voice.
âShut up.â Klaus snapped before grabbing his drink from the table behind him.
âWhat do you need Klausy?â You teased as you took his drink downing in soundlessly.
âWould you mind posing for me again?â
âYou took me away from my night out to ask for another painting session!?â You screamed throwing the glass against the wall.
âYep.â Klaus smirked up at you from the couch as you stood up.
âExcuse me miss but I think Iâm gonna have to ask you to lea-â A man yelled as he came in to the private room ranting.
SNAP!
âSorry but am gonna have to insist ya shut up!â You screamed snapping his wrist back breaking it without a blink. You turned to Niklaus with a glare ignoring the guys screamed of pain.
âItâs so attractive when you go all psycho on someone.â Klaus grinned mischievously over at you.
In the blink of an eye you were on top of Klaus, hands in his hair tugging furiously as you both fought for dominance over the kiss you currently found yourself in. You donât know how you ended up there but the screaming guy now forgotten as you ripped Klausâs shirt open. Your hands made their way down his chest, nails digging in angrily as your hands made their way to his pants.
You hadnât even realised your shirt was gone, his hands were tugging at your bra but he soon gave up and ripped it off. His hand massaged your breasts roughly as he took the left nipple in his mouth suckling and biting vigorously. You groaned loudly, your hands working open his pants Klaus had apparently thought you were going to slow so he flipped you over onto you front. He dropped his pants then proceeded to rip off your skirt. When he was done he lifted your ass up your face still crushed into the couch.
You screamed out as two of his fingers entered you with no warning. You soon recovered as his thrusts were hitting your special spot. You pushed back onto his fingers craving your realise but as soon as Klaus realised what you were doing he stopped and brought his hand down to your ass giving it a loud smack. You whined wiggling your ass at him, as if daring him to do it again. So head did, several times before kissing the red welts that now covered both ass cheeks.
âP-Please Klaus...â You whined your voice full of desperation.
âNot yet sweetheart. I want you to feel all of me when you cum.â He grunted as he gripped your hips dragging you closer to him. His hand slid from the bottom of you back to your shoulders, his touch sending shivers down your spine. He gripped your right shoulder as he thrust into you roughly making you gasp loudly, gripping the pillows at how full you felt.
âOh god! Please Klausy..â You taunted your breathing uneven and full of need.
He started thrusting into you angrily, his breathing getting louder. His thrust gained an unhuman speed as you became a moaning mess. Your screams were loud and raw, you had never been with Klaus but youâd imagined the pleasure he could give you with a thousand years of experience. You were gripping the couch so tightly your nails had started cutting through the fabric that covered it.
âShit, Y/N Iâm close.â You heard him grunt his nails digging into your hips, no doubt drawing blood.
You nodded sobbing in pleasure as he started hitting you g-spot as if trying to force your orgasm out of you. You were a writhing mess as he hit your special spot with violent thrusts. You felt your stomach tighten as you orgasm neared its peak. His hand moved to grip your hair pulling you up so he could whisper dirty little things in your ear.
âCum for me love.â He grunted as his seed started to fill you, his rough sexed out voice pushed you over the edge his arms now gripping your waist as he gave you one more thrust. After your powerful orgasm was over you collapsed into Klausâs arms.
***
When you came too you knew three things. One, your virgina hurt. Two, you were in a soft bed and three, someone was laid next to you.
You rolled over to see Klaus and then images of what happened the night before came rushing back. You groaned before deciding to wake Klaus up.
âNiklaus why am I here?â You questioned as his eyes started opening.
âBecause after I fucked you into next week you pasted out.â He smirked over at you as if he was proud about his achievement.
âThereâs some juice on the side and Iâll have Sally bring you some food since you were most likely dehydrated.â Klaus added seriously pointing to the orange juice that was sat next to you. You shook you head but drank it anyway knowing he was right. After you finished the glass of juice Niklaus dragged you back down.
âYou know that wasnât a one off right?â Klaus narrowed his eyes as if trying to search yours for your thoughts.
âWhat so now Iâm your new little fuck buddy?â You snorted your voice sarcastic and full of bitterness.
âNo more like I want you to be my Queen.â He responded seriously, staring into your Y/E/C eyes.
You laid there silently thinking about how good that actually sounded but your thoughts were soon interrupted by and annoyingly smug voice.
âOr the Harley Quinn to his Joker!â
Fucking Kol! You thought as you buried your head into the pillow. Â

Astrid was diligent with the slow and gentle rehab she had been doing, wanting to be better for the next Matildas camp only a month away now. It had been just over two weeks and she had been advised four to six for total recovery, but she was itching to be part of that squad against Canada, even if she only got a few minutes of playing time.Â
She worked with the physios everyday to bring her strength back up in her ankle, eventually being able to walk around without the boot after three weeks and Astrid felt good. Without there being any tears or extreme damage to the tendons or ligaments, the time frame had just been an extra precaution because of her high intensity exercise and sport, wanting it to heal undisturbed as much as it could before she jumped back into football.Â
By the time this next international call up was here Astrid had just begun jogging again on the pitch, passing the ball between her feet and it was like she was a different person than she had been for the past 6 weeks. She had formed a new appreciation for being able to play at the level she was and getting to do it with her best friends at a club that motivated her.Â
The time had come and Astrid had never been more excited to go on a camp, the senior players who hadnât been there for the last camp returning, the squad back together again to play against Canada. They had all made sure to check in on Astrid after hearing about or seeing her injury, encouraging her to keep going and get back onto that pitch, knowing how useful her skills are when up against tough opponents.Â
The games were in Australia this time, meaning Astrid was finally going home for the first time since moving to Sweden, and her parents promised they would be there to cheer her on at the Sydney game.Â
After a long day of travel the sweden squad, plus Mini and Harper, were so happy to be back on aussie soil and head straight to the hotel. The car ride from the hotel was full of chatter, all of the players trying not to fall asleep, aiming to hold on until bedtime. The car pulled up and they started getting out of the car, going and collecting their bags from the boot to take inside.Â
They received their room numbers and went to drop their bags off, the rooming changing again and Astrid finding herself rooming with Kyra for the first time.Â
âThis one's mine.â Astrid placed her backpack on the bed closest to the window.Â
âOh so if someone comes to murder us they can get me first?â Kyra stood in front of the other bed, looking at the distance between the door and where she would be sleeping.
âNot what I was thinking, but sure.â Astrid shrugged with a smile. âCome on, let's go to dinner before they eat all the food.â She walked to the door with her phone and keycard, putting her arm out for Kyra to link her own. They left the room, skipping arm in arm down the hallway to the lifts, laughing as they almost tripped about seven times.Â
They found their way to the room that had been turned into the team dining room, being easily directed by the noise coming from the girls in there. When they walked in it seemed they were the last to arrive, not surprising of course, the pair known for being late to things all the time.Â
âLook who decided to show up.â The room quieted down as Sam spoke loudly, walking up next to Astrid.Â
âOh Sammy, you know I like to make an entrance.â Astrid smiled at her, parts of the room laughing before they pulled each other in for a hug.Â
âHowâs the ankle?â Sam asked as they stood together.Â
âYeah a lot better definitely.â Astrid nodded, looking down at her taped ankle.Â
âGood.â Sam smiled. âGo and get something to eat, kid, catch up more later.â Sam nodded her head in the direction of the buffet, Astrid turning around, instantly spotting Kyra walking away with a full plate, both laughing as they made eye contact.Â
Astrid grabbed some food and went to sit at the table where the âoriginal trioâ and Steph sat, slotting between the two Arsenal players.Â
âAsteroid!â Mackenzie all but yelled across the table, reaching across for a fist bump which was returned with a smile from Astrid.Â
âHey chicken.â Steph spoke from beside her, Astrid instantly rested her head on Stephâs shoulder.Â
âHey Stephy. How are you?â Astrid moved her head to look up at Steph.Â
âIâm good, how you feeling?â Steph squeezed her shoulder.Â
âReal good.â She smiled and then began eating, catching up with the other girls on the table, hearing all about their time off and where they spent it.Â
The team had a mini bonding night, deciding to put a movie on the projector in the dining room before they all headed off to bed. Those with movie suggestions wrote them down and they were placed into a hat for a random draw.Â
âAnd the winner isâŚâ Sam shuffled her hand around in the hat. âHannah Montana The Movie?â Her eyebrows furrowed in confusion.Â
âYES!â A shout was heard and everyone turned their heads. Astrid had shot up from her seat, very happy her favourite movie had been chosen.Â
âWere you not like a baby when this came out?â Caitlin asked the youngest member.Â
âI was five.â Astrid calmly spoke. A few gasps came from the room, a lot of the players again shocked at how young she really was compared to them. âEnough with the questions, itâs movie time.â She had taken control of the remote, searching for the movie and pressing play.Â
Throughout the movie everyone could hear Astrid singing along, dancing in her seat and even mouthing most of the script, a few of them filming her from behind. Then came the scene in the barn and âHoedown Throwdownâ began to play, Astrid let out a small squeal before standing up at the front of the screen.
She began to do the choreography while facing away from the screen, she had learnt it off by heart from the amount of times she had watched it. Everyone sat in shock as she did the dance with precision, not knowing she had it in her.Â
When it was done she took a bow, the group cheered and clapped loudly as she sat back down next to Charli and Kyra. The room went silent again, all paying attention to the rest of the movie.Â
âNice dance moves.â Kyra leant over and whispered to Astrid after a while. Astrid just shook her head and giggled.Â
The movie finished and to most people's surprise they enjoyed it, something lighthearted and fun to watch before bed. Most of the girls were very tired after travel, Astrid thought she might be too but I guess the excitement of the movie brought her energy back.Â
Everyone began to stand, stretching out their limbs while the credits rolled, all watching Astrid who was still dancing around to the music in front of the screen, singing loudly along to the words.Â
The music stopped abruptly and so did Astridâs dancing. Having enough with the upbeat song and Astridâs energy, Mackenzie had found the remote and turned off the screen.Â
âI wasnât done.â Astrid whined to the taller girl.Â
âYeah you are, bedtime little one.â She patted Astridâs head and laughed at her pout and eyeroll. Mackenzie headed for the door, Kyra coming over to push Astrid along and drag her off to their room for bed.Â
As per usual, when she was done getting ready for bed, Astridâs head hit the pillow and she was out like a light, the aftermath of long travel taking control and she fell straight to sleep.Â
The next morning after getting ready, Kyra and Astrid headed down to breakfast with a little more energy after having slept a decent amount of hours, ready to begin training with the team.Â
The first match was still two days away so they had some time to work with each other after months apart now that everyone had arrived. But playing with people on the same club team definitely helps in creating rhythms and relationships on and off the pitch.Â
A quick gym session was first up upon arriving at the stadium, everyone working individually on what they needed to before proper training. Astrid was quick to take control of the music to play over the speakers, waiting to show off the playlist she had accumulated. It did feature a lot of Taylor, Hannah Montana and One Direction but she also added plenty of 2000s, 90s and even 80s songs into the mix for everyone to enjoy. Safe to say everyone was happy with Astrid being the DJ after seeing everyone sing or at least bop along to many of the songs. Maybe she would become the team's newly appointed DJ.
They finished in the gym and moved to the pitch, Astrid chatting with Caitlin while they walked out, catching up more than they did last night and Astrid asking about Arsenal and what it was really like. She parted ways with Caitlin after spotting Charli who was chatting with Kyra, Mini and Alex. She ran over and practically jumped on her, gripping the blonde's shoulders who let out a small scream at the impact.Â
âHeyyyyy, Cha Cha.â Astrid peaked her head over Charli's shoulder who shrugged the girl off and began walking away from her with a smirk. âRuuuude.â Astrid yelled at her as she followed behind to where everyone congregated.Â
âAlrighty ladies, you know the drill.â Assistant coach Jens yelled out, indicating it was time to begin their session with a jog to warm up.Â
âUghhhhh, I hate this.â Astrid panted out halfway during the jog. âCan I be done yet?â She yelled as they passed the coaches.Â
âDoes your ankle hurt?â Jens raised a brow.Â
âNo.â And she kept going, picking up her pace to make it finish faster. She all but crumbled to the ground once she reached the end of the jog, having not run that much since her injury.Â
âYou good there?â A body covered the sun that was shining over her eyes.Â
âI am now.â She smiled at Kyra who was extending an arm to help her up.Â
Jens called them over to where they had now set up the circuit for the drills. Astrid liked this part a lot better than the initial jog, ready to hone in her skills and get back into her rhythm of passes and shooting goals.Â
They had gone through their regular training drills before moving to work on separate skills in groups of their field positions. So tragically Astrid and Charli had to part ways, Caitlin dragging a pouting Astrid towards the group of forwards and Charli waving dramatically as she walked backwards to the defenders.Â
After weeks of just doing small passes to build back up, Astrid was finally able to begin shooting goals again; the main thing she loved about playing football. One of the coaches would pass a ball to the running player and then they would shoot it in, aiming for a different part of the net each time. The goalkeepers had joined them to practise blocking the goals, Astrid was holding the lead against Sam for how many they could get past Lydia.Â
âOHHHHH. Another one! And with the left foot!â Astrid ran with outstretched arms after she slotted another ball past Lydia, bringing her total to 6 and Sam just behind with 5. âSheâs back and better than ever, baby.â Astrid circled Sam, the other forwards watching and laughing at her antics.Â
âPiss off.â Sam shoved the younger striker away, taking her place to accept the next pass. With bad luck to Sam, Lydia had just tapped it away and then the whistle blew to signal the end of drills. Â
âSucked in, oldie.â Astrid whispered as she skipped away to the sideline.
âGet back here you little shit!â Sam huffed and began chasing the girl with a smile on her face, Astrid panicked and began running.Â
âSTEPHY! SAVE ME!â Astrid screamed as she approached ,the defender turning her head to see Sam chasing after Astrid. Astrid made it to the vice captain and stood behind her panting, hiding from the other captain.Â
âEnough you two.â Steph put on a stern voice and looked between the two players.Â
âShe called me old.â Sam pleaded, going to speak again but Tony had interrupted her from further down the sideline.Â
âAlrighty, scrimmage time.â The team began walking closer to him, taking a drink and breath break. âSam and Steph, come and select your teams.â He tossed the red bibs to Sam for her team and the yellow to Steph.Â
They had chosen their players, taking the defenders, then midfielders and finally their forwards. It was down to the two youngest forwards, Mary and Astrid. Steph got first pick so it was up to her, and knowing the passes Kyra and Astrid can make, it wasnât hard.
âAstrid, you're with me.â Steph beckoned the girl over to her team, glad that it consisted of herself, Steph, Kyra, Charli, Lydia, Cortnee, Clare W, Mini, Alanna, Princess and Tameka. Samâs team had Caitlin, Mary, Larissa, Emily Van Egmond, Emily Gielnik, Courtney, Aivi, Macca, Alex and Clare P.Â
The game began and Samâs team took good possession straight away but the defence between Charli, Alanna and Steph was strong. 10 minutes in and Kyra had stolen the ball from Larissa, running with it until she could see Astrid making her way into free space further up the pitch. Kyra booted it into the air, ending at Princess who hit it with her chest towards Astrid, right foot ready to catch it.
The tip of her boot brought it to the ground so she could steady her footing, quickly sending it towards the goal through Mackenzieâs still legs, thinking she was going to send it higher like usual. The net rippled and the young player cheered, running back to her position with a high five to her teammates as she went by.Â
Tony blew the whistle to indicate the end of the match. It had ended in a 2-2 draw, everyone going around and high fiving each other.Â
âGood game, Astrid.â Sam smiled at the young striker. She wouldnât admit it outloud but she did think maybe one day she could give her a run for her money, seeing a lot of herself at that age in Astrid.
âYou too, Sam.â Astrid gave her hand a shake and a clap on the back as they began to walk to the side for a drink.Â
âAlright everyone in.â Tonyâs voice carried through the team who began walking over to form a loose huddle, too hot to make it tight. âWell done today, very impressed with everyoneâs efforts. Even after not playing altogether for a while you showed that no matter what you are a strong team. Off to recovery and then the day is all yours, Iâll see you tomorrow for match day minus 1.â Tony nodded with a smile. Everyone clapped before they made their way inside and headed straight for the cold pools.Â
Astrid was the first one in the pool, loving the cold water from growing up at a beach during the winter, going for swims no matter the weather. Everyone else of course thought she was crazy to enjoy the cold water and her eagerness to get in it.Â
The next day at training looked very similar to the day before but the physios had been keeping an eye on Astrid, being so soon off an injury. She felt great, really. It didnât hurt and her ankle felt strong, continuing to work and train to be a sub for tomorrow's game.Â
An early dinner of their usual pre-match pasta night was followed by an early bed for all the players, especially for those who had travelled from overseas all but a few days ago. Everyone bid each other goodnight before retiring to their rooms.Â
Kyra had called the shower first, knowing from the previous night how long Astrid really did take on her skincare. Once they were both finished and had set an alarm, they lay in their separate beds, room silent, spare the aircon blowing softly.Â
âI think youâll start tomorrow.â Astrid spoke, turning in her bed to face Kyraâs.Â
âReally?â Kyra also shifted, finding Astridâs eyes in the dark room.Â
âYeah, I mean youâve been working really hard and I think they can tell.â Astrid smiled softly at the girl.Â
âThank you.â Kyra also smiled even if Astrid couldnât really see it. âI think Tony will put you on, make use of your âsuper-subâ reputation again.â Kyra let out a soft laugh.Â
âMaybe.â Astrid shrugged under her covers.Â
âDefinitely. Iâm calling it right now.â Kyra turned to lie on her back and look up at the ceiling.Â
âFine. But if youâre wrong, youâre buying me a coffee.â Astrid copied Kyraâs shift in movement.Â
âDeal. But if Iâm right, you buy me a coffee.â Kyra spoke again.Â
âOkay.â Astridâs voice was barely above a whisper as she felt herself drifting to sleep. âGoodnight, Ky Ky.â She spoke one last time before letting herself fall into the pillow.Â
âGoodnight, Stargirl.â Kyra took one last look at Astrid before shutting her eyes and falling asleep herself, a soft smile etched on her face.Â
