COMEDY!!!! It balances the darker stuff out so nicely.

A ship that is just kanej but a different font (think kanej if Kaz smiled more and Kaz and Inej touched all the time) (I'm not exaggerating. It's all. The. Time).

Literally. Lockwood is an au!Kaz.

The clothes, the scheming, the hopelessly in love with his friend...

Lucy is also a lot like Inej. She WILL call out her man.

The plot is really good!! Feel free to ooh and ahh because there are both ghosts and mysteries.

The acting is GREAT!

Have I mentioned there's an amazing slowburn (yes, I have).

There's also every top tier trope you could imagine (fancy party, wound bandaging, general teens without real adult supervision whilst also being more competent than the adults shenanigans).

I'm just trying to spread the good word because odds are if you are a soc fan, you know the fear that those two words (Netflix + renewal) instill.

heya!! i’ve had this blog for a while now, but i realised i haven’t ever actually done a proper intro on here, so here it is!! (also did i want the opportunity to make an aesthetic of myself??? absolutely. image made in canva and portrait on the left is from picrew, all other images were taken from unsplash)

my name is aj (she/her pronouns pls)!! i’m 26, black, and i live in the uk. i graduated from uni 3 years ago and currently work in lab admin, but i’ve been doing creative writing for 10+ years!! i’m currently trying to get back into reading by reading a book a month (i usually share the book i’m reading in the sidebar of my main blog, which i follow back with as this blog is a sideblog: @andipxndy), and i write a variety of fanfiction and original works (both based off my own characters and those i currently/have rp’d with in the past). i also take requests for fanfiction, which you can read about below the cut or in this post (i’ve made some changes which mean the post is not relevant atm)!! but in general i love being asked questions about my WIPs and my characters and basically any characters i write, because i love delving into character thoughts and doing character development (so please send me some!!).

this blog started off as a way for me to share my fanfiction writing, which is how i got into writing in the first place and how i came to love it, but now i’m wanting to expand some more share/talk about some of my original works too!! i write ya sci-fi in my original stuff, but i’m known to drift into romance, action-comedy and crime when it comes to fanfiction works. i’m also over on ao3 as andipxndy.

my main fanfic writing fandoms are abbott elementary and alex rider, just to keep things managable, but i also enjoy watching ncis, criminal minds and lockwood & co., and sometimes dive back into old favourite animes (k-on!! is my current anime obsession). i may be slow to write or respond to stuff but i DO enjoy diving into discussing fandom stuff too!! i also like playing video games like sims 4 (ea is a money grab pass it on) and cities skylines, and enjoy dnd and rping with friends!!

before this intro gets too long, here are my main WIPs:

power play (1st draft completed, left to stew)

the first original wip i planned, the story is intended to be part of a 5-book series about a 20-year-old who accidentally gives himself powers, and ends up drawn into the science underground whilst trying to save people that he may or may not have also accidentally given powers. and all whilst trying to appear completely normal to his mum and get a summer job whilst home from university.

the crossover (still working on 1st draft, is my main/november nano project)

this is an adaptation of an old rp au i had with one of my closest friends, adjusted to have new, original characters despite the same plotline. it follows a 17-year-old girl as she’s accidentally transported into a parallel universe, where her parents aren’t her parents and she doesn’t exist. in an attempt to get home, she ends up crossing paths with the people who are meant to be her family, and finds out that they’re all superheroes. insert drama and shenanigans here.

the rich life: a modern bourgeoise au (working on 1st draft, is my camp nano project)

a passion project that i’m completing for my rp partners, this au is split into a 3-book series following the lives of our characters in the upper class, those who work for them, and eventually their children, going through the drama of their lives and how they try so hard not to have it all end up in the press. that obviously doesn’t work.

fanfiction fics and requests (ongoing but this is technically a wip)

Purely out of curiosity since ur rewatching TVD, what is your opinion on the absolute use and abuse of Bonnie Bennett throughout the entire series?? And how would you as a writer have approached her character and arcs instead?? Just wanted hear ur trusted and intellectual perspective on this 😔😔🤍

Trusted and intellectual, nonnie? 🤣 I can't tell if you're being ironic and this is trying to poke fun at me somehow or not, so I'll just assume it's an honest question, even if there's nothing trustworthy or intellectual about my takes on this teen vampire drama 🤣🤣

I have talked about Bonnie before, but I don't think I had ever watched the show start to finish from season 1, and it becomes even more glaringly obvious how awful the writing for her character is. Even when the show is at its best, Bonnie never is. She starts from a place of semi-protagonism, discovering her witchy powers at the same time Elena meets Stefan, and we're led to believe she's going to play a huge role, right? That figuring out this story is gonna go right through her. And then by the end of S1, they bump her down to somehow being less relevant than Caroline, who at this point had nothing going on for her besides a failed romance with Matt (she becomes a vampire on the last episode of S1, I think). Caroline gets the complicated romances, she gets the vampire arc, then Tyler being a werewolf situation, her drama with her mother, and then she gets Klaus. Meanwhile, Bonnie gets absolutely no plots of her own.

She's barely a person at all. Literally, when they have no use for her saving Elena, she doesn't even appear. We know nothing about her family, I don't think they even mention Bonnie's mom abandoned her, we don't even know she lives with her father, we don't see her house like we see Caroline's and Elena's. I just watched ep 1 of S3 today, and she's away with 'her father's family' but who are they? Who's her father?? We only meet him in S4 and somehow are led to believe he'd always been there and was somehow important enough to be appointed mayor, even though he was never a part of the town council. Why??

I can get behind Bonnie taking her mother's last name because, I don't know, the Bennetts are important, but they never make it seem like they are, so it doesn't make any sense?? Although, coming to think of it, it's weird with Caroline too. Liz is not a Forbes, and yet we hear her family has also always been in on the whole vampire thing, even though the founding family is on her father's side?? Just stupidity, I guess. But anyway. Why couldn't they make Bonnie's father a Bennett instead and then have him be a major part of the town's secret dealings like everyone else? Why not get them involved in the whole political shenanigans going on? The Bennett's had been there since BEFORE the founding families, they are a powerful witch line, and yet we're supposed to believe they relinquished all the power to the white idiots all this time? Why haven't they been pulling the strings around the city? Why did Emily Bennet never play a bigger role other than as Katherine's maid?

Why wasn't Bonnie even selected to be among the Miss Mystic Falls girls?? Why wasn't she invited to the Mikaelson ball? Are we supposed to believe that Esther wouldn't want to meet the descendant of the witch Ayana?? Why bring Bonnie's mom into this at all, someone who had never been a part of anything, if they could've just had her father play a big role in EVERYTHING from the start and make the Bennetts a real powerhouse in the story? They could've been the real chiefs in town, not the Lockwoods.

And then when we learn about Bonnie's mom, we find out she ALSO sacrificed her powers AND HER DAUGHTER just to protect Elena because of her good friend Miranda??? Seriously?? This is so fucked up.

Bonnie honestly has no agency within the plot, ever. She's just this artifice to fix whatever the writers come up, just a tool for salvation. It's lazy, lazy and RACIST writing, IMO. We hear she's super powerful, that her witchy line is the most powerful one ever, going all the way back to Qetsiyah, and yet that never manifests into the story. When they need Bonnie to be some deux ex machina type, she is. When they don't, she's weak. She loses her powers, she gives it away willingly, she DIES about 100 times like she has no aspirations of her own other than saving Elena and Jeremy. Caroline gets a full personality (even if everyone rolls their eyes at her, which is a different thing), but what are Bonnie's traits, other than being brave and loyal and self-sacrificing? What are Bonnie's aspirations?

The fact that out of eight seasons, she doesn't have a love interest for one and a half, and spends from S2 to S6 hung up on Jeremy is just !!!! Dude cheats on her, betrays her, is useless and boring, leaves the show, comes back, and Bonnie is somehow ALWAYS still in love with him. Tbh, their entire relationship seems like an attempt at giving Jeremy more purpose than adding anything to Bonnie's development. It's ridiculous.

At some point, we meet this woman who says she's a Bennett cousin, someone who was helping Katherine in S2, and she tells Bonnie she'll come back, but then we never hear about her again??? Why couldn't this woman have come back to teach Bonnie about her ancestors, about the Bennetts, about magic? Why didn't she get that story arc?

It's been mentioned several times how awful the treatment of Kat Graham was. So much so she gets war flashbacks whenever anyone mentions The Vampire Diaries next to her. I even read that they were giving her crappy story lines in order to get her to quit the show on her own. That they'd act like that towards their single black actor on the show, knowing she was facing blatant disrespect behind the scenes from some of her coworkers, is just awful. It's racist, racist crap, there's no other word for it.

How I would fix her arcs is too loaded a question, because there are too many arcs, and too much to fix. I'm not really a writer, nor am an intellectual lol So I don't know if I'd be capable of giving her the protagonism she deserved. But I just wish they'd fleshed out Bonnie the way they did others. Given her aspirations, plans, her own story lines separate from everyone else (like Caroline and Tyler or Caroline and Klaus or Caroline and her mom or Caroline and the twins). Giving her a home and a family would've humanized her. I wish they'd made the story run through her, instead of using her, that they'd given her all the power we hear she's supposed to have. By the end of TVD, Bonnie should've been crowned THE MOST POWERFUL WITCH ON EARTH, period. Her journey should've taken her there. Instead, she keeps getting outshined by everyone else.

I wish she'd gotten a good love interest (NOT JEREMY). Personally, I liked her and Damon in S6/7/8. WAY more than I ever liked her and Enzo, tbh. I read that Ian and Kat were SUPER pushing for Bamon, and it honestly would've been an interesting arc?? I know people are gonna say 'ew, problematic', but honestly every single ship on this show is problematic in some way, it's a vampire show, and the two of them as friends were super cute. Plus, they did have a lotta chemistry.

And the big thing for me is that Bonnie should've been leading lady after Elena leaves. It just made sense. Bumping Caroline up to that spot was ???? I love Caroline, she's my absolute favorite, but why?? What about her character journey or her importance within the show made her leading character material? Bonnie, otoh, made perfect sense. She was super powerful, she could steer the story, AND there was the beautiful poetry of her taking over Elena's place. Since Elena was asleep for as long as she was alive, then why not actually give a great life to live, for once, since they'd never allowed her to do it while Elena was in the picture. But no. Instead, she loses her powers. 🙃

Something I also would've loved to see happen is having her moved over to TO. Since they clearly didn't want her in TVD, why not put her in the neighboring show and give her a more important role? A Bennett witch among the New Orleans covens could've been great. Even if it was just for a short arc, I would've appreciated that. There's a whole thing at the end of S1 of TO where Klaus gets in touch with Bonnie about the collapse of the Other Side and then we learn Esther used that to bring herself, Finn and Kol back to life. There was a good crossover opportunity there that was just wasted. Even Matt and Alaric crossover to TO. Why not Bonnie?

Anyway. 🤣 If this wasn't meant as a serious ask, nonnie, I'm sorry for the bible answer, but joke is on you cause clearly I have lots of FEELS. Though none of this is groundbreaking, it's just obvious stuff. I've only just started S3 though, I'm sure I'll get more outraged as I move forward.

IN CONCLUSION 🥲 Bonnie was a badly written, barely humanized character ON PURPOSE, but Kat Graham portrayal of her, in spite of all the awful story lines, was so genuine and so full of heart that we cared for her and loved her anyway. She gave life to someone who was mistreated by the writing team from start to finish. She deserves the world, JUSTICE FOR BONNIE BENNETT.

A while back I saw a headcannon about Lockwood being aspec and was like. Huh that's interesting. But just now I was brushing my teeth and realized it's VERY INTERESTING.

Cause while I love this series with my whole heart I was always a bit miffed that Lucy and Lockwood don't have scene where they... idk candidly admit their feelings for each other?? I know we get the locket scene but there's not a lot of vulnerability in that.

(also I know they're very much teenagers who shouldn't be expected to know how to relationship, but the story treats them like adults so let me go on my tangent)

You could argue that Lockwood's too emotionally constipated to profess his love or whatever but I don't think that's true! A big part of his character growth in book 5 was showing Lucy his family's grave and letting her in on some of his grief.

But all of his non-committal, plausible-deniability flirting attempts make a lot more sense if he doesn't have the vocabulary to say, "I like you, but I don't. I want you- but not like that."

Makes the scene where they have to share the cape in the Creeping Shadow even better if you imagine Lockwood having a little ace panic at the same time. "Okay... this is kinda nice... but now MUCH do I like it??? and how much am I SUPPOSED to like it?!"

There ARE some shitty gendered dynamics between them, where it feels like Lucy's always waiting for Lockwood to make the first move. Would love to see her have the character growth to be able to say "hey you! I think you're pretty!" oh god and then misunderstandings and shenanigans ensue and Lockwood has to deal with all of his internalized aphobia?! (might have to reread the empty grave and write a fic)

Okay so I'm aroace and idk if Lockwood is the best character to project onto (veering into the Sherlock, "too emotionally unavailable and consumed by his work to have time for sex" stereotype) but it's too late now, I love it when a piece of media gets re-contextualized.

With a heave of her arms, Caroline tossed her last load of ceder branches into the back of her old Chevy Blazer and sighed happily. The local tree farm was selling their extra scrap branches for cheap, and even though it was a little early to be getting decorations for the solstice party, she was determined to snatch them up before Mrs Lockwood went to refresh the fresh cut boughs that had been decorating the inside of her palatial plantation home for weeks.

"One more load!" came Enzo's voice from behind her, and she quickly jumped out of the way to let him settle his armful on top of the heap stacked up on a tarp covering the cargo space in the back. Patting the branches into place, he pulled off his resiny gloves and tossed them on top. "There, do you think you have enough, or must I continue to pack mule your pagan Better Homes and Garden's fantasies all afternoon?" he asked, like he wasn't full aware that he had volunteered to help.

It was the Forbes turn to host the Yule festivities, and Caroline was determined to show a good turn up. She had enough boughs to decorate and provide a wreath making station on the porch. It would be a tight fit in the living room and kitchen for everyone, but she was proud of the little space she and her mother had shared together growing up, after her parent's split. The small two-bedroom apartment Enzo and she shared barely fit the two of them and Enzo's boyfriend, Kol, when he visited.

Caroline smiled fondly at Enzo and arched an eyebrow. "What do you want, a carrot? Best friend rule book clearly states you are to help me in my hour of need," she said with a lofty tone, tossing her own work gloves in the back and slamming the hatch closed. The snow squeaked under her boots as she circled around to the front of the SUV.

"Yes. I’ve been your pack mule for hours," he languished as they climbed into the front seats. "It seems your promise of food was a myth." He looked at her pitifully.

Caroline laughed as she started up the car, cranking the heat and rubbing her hands together before reaching for the parking brake. "I left the crock pot on this morning, there will be plenty for Elena, you, and your harem."

"Oy, you can't call them that. One, it's not PC, they're a polycule." He copied her and held his hands in front of the heater vent as Caroline carefully backed out of the loading zone. The two lane highway was quiet this time of day, but with schools closed for break, freshly licensed high schoolers liked to live fast, regardless of the snowy roads. Satisfied that they wren’t going to be plowed into, she headed back to town. "Two,” Enzo continued, “Bonnie is all flirt and no straight answers, so I can't count her in yet."

"I like that 'yet', it's very optimistic. Are you sure you want straight answers?" Caroline said, flicking her blinker on to turn onto Wickery bridge.

Enzo huffed as they drove through the trees. "Really any answers at this point would be preferable. She likes us, I know she does, but enough to be interested?" He grunted noncommittally.

In the distance, a car on the side of the road distracted Caroline. The hood was popped up and smoke was drifting through the air, a figure bent with their head in the engine. Pulling over, Caroline flipped on her hazards before hopping out of the car, wincing at the slush pile left by the slow plows.

"Hey, you need a hand?" She called, as Enzo grumbled from behind her that charity in below 30 degree weather was too much do-gooding for his tastes, as he got out of the SUV.

A head popped up and Caroline blinked. The corner of her mind that insisted she'd happened upon the plot of a Hallmark movie looked over the man's dirty blonde hair with a slight curl, the pretty cheekbones rosy with cold, the lush lips feathered with steam as he let out a breath, and she was tempted to send a sarcastic prayer to the Goddess that he was single and in need of a lesson on the Yuletide spirit.

He smiled at her approach, and really, the set of dimples he unleashed with that action was mortally unfair.

"Morning! My rental seems to have developed a... problem of some kind," he said, and his accent nearly made her roll her eyes because of course, of course he sounded like that. If he said he was coming to town to work on the family tree farm, she was leaving him here on principle and hunting down whoever spelled her a Christmas miracle for sport.

Can you recommend any historical romances with John and Sara vibes?

So you're probably looking for some age gap vibes, some friends to lovers tension--here's what I'd recommend:

Duke of Pleasure by Elizabeth Hoyt--This heroine is NOTHING like Sara, but there is definitely that element of life mentorship that I think John and Sara had, and they're fighting crime, which I love. The heroine is a vigilante who sometimes cross dresses to fight crime, the hero is a duke investigating a pedophilic sex cult for the king and takes her under his wing. Famous "public BJ as a DISTRACTION to FOOL CRIMINALS" scene. I really like it. He's very sweet with her, too.

After Dark with the Duke and What I Did for A Duke by Julie Anne Long both have significant age gaps, (about 17 years in After Dark, 20 in What I Did) though no crime is to be solved. In both cases, the hero and heroine start out with combative relationships but quickly melt into friendship, which of course is infused with sexual tension. I think What I Did probably fits it a bit more as the friendship element is stronger, and the hero teaches her about sex much in the same way Sara learns from John.

The Earl I Ruined by Scarlett Peckham has a less significant age gap (I wanna say around 6-8 years?) but the hero is friends with the heroine's brother and has been in her orbit as she's grown up, much like John knew Sara when she was younger. He's not a mess like John on PAPER, but he's definitely got messy secrets and a past he's ashamed of. The heroine is a busybody know it all type and kind of fucks up his life in the beginning of the book so he gets pissed at her, even though he's been pining after her for years... So they do a fake engagement to fix the damage. It's great. Super hot, and he is VERY much a gentleman in the streets/freak in the sheets hero.

When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath may give you some vibes, and it is EXCELLENT. The hero is a family friend of the heroine's, there's a 9 year age difference (she's 19 and he's 28) and he is a MESS AND A HALF. He married young and his wife and child died a few years prior to the book beginning, and he has a huge amount of guilt. So he went from being a model husband who was a virgin when he married his wife, to being this hard partying aristocrat who's regularly fucking sex workers, gambling, being a hedonist. (Sound familiar?). She's a sensible lady and has been in love with him since childhood, though he has not a clue (he's not super bright, another John trait) and she tries to get him to help her find someone who will love her since she's worried about fortune hunters. He teaches her about life, flirting, and the joys of getting your pussy eaten. As a friend.

How to Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid. Another "he's my older friend who's teaching me how to catch a man" but much angstier. The hero is an outcast from society and has had this tension-filled friendship with the heroine for years, and believes that if they ever hooked up it would like, ruin their lives because they're too different. He's very dramatic. Much angstier than Sara and John, but it scratches that "my older guy friend and I were making out and it got really out of hand" itch.

The Heiress Hunt by Joanna Shupe. No age gap, but friends to lovers and set in Gilded Age America. The heroine and hero were childhood friends, shit happened, he went to Paris for a while, and now he's back in time to see her be courted by a duke. (The Duke of Fuckwood Lockwood, my cuck king.). He's determined to ruin the courtship. No crime solving, but much tennis and house party shenanigans. Also, this entire series has been great--I like The Heiress Hunt but it's probably the weakest one? However, if you're looking for friends to lovers, it's that, and Joanna Shupe writes great Gilded Age stuff. If you want something that involves a bit more "walk on the wild side of the city" vibes, her Uptown Girls series is also great but none of those pairings are friends to lovers. The first book in the series, The Rogue of Fifth Avenue, is probably the closest in that the heroine has known the hero a long time as her father's attorney, and he's meant to protect her.
