I've been following this story and it's so good! The author really has a way with words and you feel like you're actually there every time Caroline sings! Some really great lines from this latest installment:

"fingers testing chords like questions"

"She wasn't biting yet, but she liked the bait."

And basically that entire scene where Klaus has FEELINGS during that lullaby... 

“You’re evil.”

The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time Klaus returned. There was a chill in the air that left the boardwalk practically deserted. He checked his watch as he strode towards the ice cream parlour – then halted abruptly. Street lamps flickered to life around him, highlighting the place where Caroline wasn’t anymore. 

Her bartender friend had seemed confident in her schedule, so why wasn’t she here? Klaus’ hands curled into fists at his sides, the taste of disappointment bitter on his tongue as his gaze swept the shop’s shuttered windows.

But then he heard it.

Soft humming, the experimental plucking of guitar strings. Klaus followed the sound around a corner, was drawn to the light glinting off her hair like a moth to a flame. She was sitting on a stone bench overlooking the ocean, her back to the world. 

Her expression was distant, fingers testing chords like questions, gaze fixed on some invisible point beyond the waves. The bravado and self-assurance she cloaked herself in during a performance had slipped off her shoulders. She looked younger without it. Sadder. 

He let his footsteps fall just a little heavier as he approached, made the paper bag in his hand rustle faintly. She still didn’t notice him.

“Caroline.”

She jumped, fingers slipping from the strings with a discordant twang. “Klaus!” She gasped, hand flying to her throat. “Don’t sneak up on me like that!”

“Apologies, love,” he said, raising an eyebrow at her reaction, but trying to sound contrite despite his amusement. “Not my intention. I just stopped by that lovely Japanese place down the street.”

Caroline’s eyes flicked to the bag, lips parting before she clenched her jaw. At least Matt hadn’t been wrong about her food preferences. Klaus allowed himself a smile.

“It smells divine, but I’m afraid they gave me far too much by accident,” he continued. “So I thought I might be able to persuade you to share a meal with me after all. It would be a shame to let half of this go to waste.”

“No need to lay it on quite that thick,” Caroline told him with a quirked eyebrow. After another glance at the bag, she added, “Name your price, then.”

“No price.” The words were a mistake, he saw it the instant her face shuttered, suspicion creeping back in. He hurried to add, “Just the pleasure of your company. And that song you were working on. I didn’t know you dabbled in composing.”

“I don’t,” she said, her tone still wary, but expression softening just slightly. “It’s something my mother used to sing. Doesn’t quite translate to guitar.”

Klaus leaned in eagerly. “Then that’s what I want.”

She hesitated. A human probably wouldn’t have heard her stomach growl, but Klaus had no problem picking up on it. Finally, she nodded. “Deal.”

Klaus settled next to her on the bench, the granite still warm from the sun. He unpacked the food with a flourish, pulling out container after container. Caroline took the offered chopsticks and surveyed the array of sushi and sashimi, tempura, agedashi tofu, sunomono, and edamame arranged between them. She popped a maki into her mouth, her eyes fluttering shut as she chewed. Klaus was briefly consumed by the soft sound of appreciation she made, imagining how else he might coax that noise out of her.

“Close your mouth,” Caroline said, though her smirk betrayed her.

Klaus leaned back, grinning. “Nothing wrong with enjoying a nice view.”

“For someone who keeps talking about how old he is, you sure don’t have the manners to show for it.”

He chuckled. “You’ve obviously never met my brother Kol, I’m a perfect gentleman by comparison.”

“Interesting, I would’ve pegged you as an only child.”

“God no,” he replied with a rueful grin. “I have more siblings than I know what to do with.”

Caroline gave him a curious look and he knew she wanted to ask. She didn’t though, so they ate in silence for a while. It was… nice. Companionable. Just sitting beside her, seeing her relaxed and enjoying the meal, made something tight unwind in Klaus. 

He still had questions of his own burning his tongue, but he wouldn’t break the rules by asking them before it was his turn. Something told him she needed reassurance that he was a man of his word. 

But that didn’t mean he couldn’t nudge her along.

“Kol is my younger brother,” he began, watching her eyes grow wide. “He and I often butt heads – too similar to get along, I suppose. He’s fun, though. Elijah takes himself too seriously. Always thinks he has to keep the rest of us in line because he’s older. Like a handful of years means anything when you’re immortal.”

Caroline wasn't looking at him, but she'd lowered her chopsticks, mindlessly stirring the rice in the container without picking anything up. She wasn't biting yet, but she liked the bait. That was enough for Klaus to continue. 

“Then there’s Rebekah, she’s the baby of the family. Always had the rest of us wrapped around her little finger, never hesitated to take advantage of that fact. Once, when Kol woke up after… one of his extended naps, Rebekah and I convinced him that this newfangled telegraph machine everyone was talking about was powered by magic.” Klaus chuckled at the memory. “He’s usually so quick to get with the times when he wakes, but that time we really got him. He even went into a station and demanded to see the witch on duty. It was glorious.” 

Caroline eyed him speculatively and Klaus could practically see her biting back the myriad of questions. In the end, she only tipped her head to the side and commented, “I didn’t know werewolves hibernated.”

“They don’t,” Klaus said, but he didn’t elaborate, waited for her to break. She remained stubbornly silent, so he kept pushing. “The revenge he took was quite creative, I’ll give him that. He really got me.”

She looked at him, expectantly. 

Klaus smiled. “If you’d like to know the particulars, feel free to ask.”

“You’re evil.”

“That case has been made, yes.”

Caroline huffed, throwing a crumpled napkin back into the bag. “Well, if there are any more dumb ways you’d like to try to trick me into asking a question before I pay my debt and go, now is your chance.”

Klaus considered for a moment, then he gave her a hopeful smile and said, “Knock knock.”

Her face scrunched up, like she really didn't want to give him the satisfaction of laughing, but had a hard time holding it in. “A valiant effort,” she deadpanned.

Caroline bent down, but instead of opening her guitar case, she picked up a rock. It was about the size of her fist, rough with sharp edges. Klaus watched curiously as she experimentally scraped it against the bench. She tapped, scraped again, playing around with different sounds while the waves rushing and retreating across the beach provided a soothing backdrop. It didn't take long for her to settle on a rhythm, to make it sound like music. She didn't meet his eyes when she began to sing, was staring out at the dark ocean. It was slow and gentle, a lullaby if he had to guess. Most of the Gaelic words still eluded him, but a few, he recognised. Something about a storm and being found.

The song didn’t sound sad, but it crept into his bones, made them heavy with sorrow and regret. They weren’t emotions he usually liked to dwell on, but there was something almost cathartic in their weight. Was this part of the magic too?

He’d wondered before if the power lay in the words themselves, but that didn't seem likely anymore. Not when she could sway a crowd of people with a Disney tune.

It was subtle magic, easy to miss if you weren't braced for it. He hadn’t even noticed it ensnaring him when he first walked into the bar. He’d known there was something supernatural at play, of course, but it had taken a while for him to realise that it wasn’t just drawing out emotions, it was forcing them on him. The nostalgia of the first song had made sense, the feeling of isolation from the second was so familiar he hadn’t even questioned it. But the third… the third had cracked something open inside of him, a yawning pit of an emotion he hadn’t felt in centuries.  

And now, it was back.  

For all that this was a different song, it struck that same raw chord in his chest, reignited the burning pain he didn’t have a name for. It didn’t feel like a new injury though, but like an old wound reopening. There was a void where something vital had been torn out of him so long ago he’d forgotten to mourn the loss. 

The brush of fingers against his cheek startled him back to reality.  

“I’m sorry,” Caroline murmured, swiping away the tear he hadn’t realised had fallen. “I didn't mean to, I was just thinking of my mom.”

“My mother isn't worth missing.” The words slipped out before he could stop them.

“I’m sorry,” she repeated. 

Klaus shrugged, as unsettled by his own slip as he was by the compassion in her voice. He wanted to go back to trading barbs and playful banter, to digging for her secrets. Instead, they sat in silence, far less comfortable than the one they'd shared before. He could feel Caroline's gaze on him and, for the first time since meeting, he wanted to turn away from her. 

This wasn’t how this evening had been meant to go. He'd wanted to get to know her, to find out what she was hiding, not expose– this. And it wasn’t like his parents’ contempt for him was a secret, but it also wasn’t what he’d wanted to lead with.

“It’s late, I should be getting home,” Caroline said eventually. 

He didn’t try to stop her when she pulled away from him, just listened to her slinging her guitar case over her shoulder, waited for her steps to retreat until they faded into the night so he could be alone with the embers of shame glowing red-hot in his chest.

“Klaus.” Caroline stood in front of him, waiting until he reluctantly met her gaze. “I’ll be at the bar again tomorrow night.” 

He furrowed his brow at her, taken aback by the sudden change in topic. Caroline just smiled patiently.

“Will you be there?”

It took a moment for her words to register, then relief flooded his veins, bright and intoxicating. “Of course.”

He watched her walk away, the ocean breeze cool against his skin. But his cheek still burned where she had touched him.

Complete. One-shot. Caroline visits Klaus in New Orleans after the last time they saw each other was when they had a fight (they've been bumping into other for years by this point). Doesn't realise his radio silence was not in fact anger, but because he'd completely forgotten her thanks to a spell. Mikaelson siblings guest star, post-canon divergence that really shows that Klaus will fall in love with her no matter the circumstances. There's a detail about his rosary necklace he always wears that I won't spoil but damn, did it change my brain chemistry.

WIP. Multichap. Not finished yet, but really promising. Caroline visits Klaus in New Orleans for Mardi Gras and its beautiful. We love our girl getting what she deserves. I'm so excited for more updates of this.

It won’t be easy and it won’t endure long, but it can be done if your need is great.” “Powerful emotions?” asked Loki. “Overwhelming rage and hatred. Fear for your life or for those around you.” Leaning forward, Mother pressed a small kiss to his forehead. “Love. All of them overwhelming forces capable of the impossible, my child. Never underestimate any of them. Especially the last.”   Centuries later and outside of time, his mother's words become far too relevant. Because Loki is truly desperate and those powerful emotions are certainly present in ample supply. There are some people that he refuses to lose, even if they have the worst timing on making certain feelings known.

This is a really lovely exploration of love and an unconventional relationship in the aroace/QPR spectrum, bolstered by great writing and plenty of emotional beats to match the action. Thoroughly enjoyed and you will too.

hie!! obsessed with your fic and while (patiently) waiting for updates, i have THE biggest craving for fics with the same vibes as your fic & The Wolf by yokan. for instance, fics with caroline in NOLA with lots of mikaelson family dynamics and just her being around them or being considered as a part of their family. i'm lowkey a sucker for found-family kinda tropes if its not obvious lol.

Just about anything by @definedareasofuncertainty , or coveredinthecolors on AO3. You'll find her works here. I'm a fangirl and will vouch for absolutely everything she has ever written. One of my all-time favorite authors, who has a brilliant Klaus voice and one of the most evocative and colorful writings in fandom.

@cupcakemolotov is a fandom legacy writer for a reason. There are more than 200 (!!!!!) fics for you to choose from and they are all brilliant! There's something for every taste, seriously cannot go wrong. Works here.

Borzoi has sadly only ever posted on FF.net, but you will not regret a trip to the past to read her works. You'll find some of all-time favorite fics here. If I had to rec one, it would be Parisian Deal, but Paradise Lost is fantastic too. Works here.

Without A Map series by @lalainajanes

Summary: Caroline's spent months planning the perfect Caribbean getaway, the only snag being that Klaus was tagging along. But she'd deal with it (and use Stefan and Rebekah as handy buffers). However, last minute disaster means they have to stay at home. So it's just her, and Klaus. And one suite, with one bed. And twelve days. So not what she'd signed on for.

This author is actually one of the first ones I discovered when I was new to the KC fandom, and oh my god, I was enthralled. Amazed. Insert more adjectives. Wow. Enemies to lovers+only one bed...I finished it in a day. Again, I repeat, wow. Her entire collection of fics is amazing, so you should definitely check out her profile here.

Summary: Divorce isn’t really an option when you’re immortal. This fic is actually part three of a collection, but it's my favourite one so far. This author is hilarious, and you should check out all their works, including their loftmates!au.

Yes. Completely. Yes. If you like the pregnancy trope but with Klaroline, this is the fic for you. It's only minorly a baby fic, however, and it's about Klaus and Caroline's lives as celebrities. There's minor Bonenzo in there too, which sweetens the deal for me. One of my favourites, you should totally check it out. Check out their other works, they are amazing.

It's sort of impossible to describe this fic in a single paragraph, because wow. Wow.

It is quite literally the best klaroline fic I've ever read. It's been my favourite since months, and I recommend it to anyone who asks. It is beautiful. Ethereal. Magical. I fell in love with it from chapter one and I've been in love since. The way the author has written Klaus and Caroline is beyond comparison. I'd go on and on, but coming to a point, this fic is wonderful and definitely check out the rest of the author's works.

Also one of my favourite authors. Love love love the way Klaus has been written, and the pining, oh, the pining. Honestly, I'd read the whole thing in like two days, so that should give you a read on how addictive it is. Also check out their other works.

Summary: Klaus is having a bad month, so Caroline decides it's a great idea to drag him along to a round of Speed Dating. Other men in the room do not approve. AH/AU fluff that was inspired by an episode of House

Cutest human!au ever. There's a lot of yearning from Caroline's side, which I absolutely love. Apart from KC, my favourite part is the way Elijah is written. The author is also very talented, and if you're a fan of the pregnancy trope and the Originals, check out their The Wolf series.

Apart from these authors, there are also other brilliant ones like @kirythestitchwitch, deathsweetqueen, emeraldvixen, @cupcakemolotov, @honestgrins and so many more. These fics are listed in no particular order, just off the top of my head. Hmm... generally if I like a trope I'll write it myself. But there were a few mermaid DCA fics I remember liking. Don't ask me for recs though because I read hundreds of fics on my old phone while not even signed into Ao3. [Depression was to blame. That was also almost two years ago.] I've read A/B/O fic before as well. [Just cause horny.] But it's not a favorite.
