episode 5 ‘death is coming’ — scene analysis
the moment when l&c find danny in the water is one of my favorite instances of soft world building in the series. the nature of the world stroud created is one that we only get to see a small glimpse at, and most of the history and infrastructure surrounding the Problem is either implied or skimmed over, because the center of the story is lucy, lockwood & george. this scene stands out because it asks questions of the institutions in power in london, and places the characters in a positional dilemma regarding their ability to control their own lives (and ultimately their deaths).
lockwood says danny used to be an agent, someone kind and effortlessly cool, who looked out for him when he was starting out. lucy then asks “how did he go from that…to a relic man?”
this question has an answer, even if it’s not stated: the ghost industrial complex. children like danny who grow up under agencies are abandoned once their talent fades. they no longer have the skills for work in the field, but carry a lifetime of trauma in only their twenties. they haven’t had the time to develop other skills that could get them other employment, and are forced to turn to smuggling or other illegal work in order to survive. danny represents any agent who ages out of the industry—anyone without an existing safety net or supportive family who lacks the resources to do anything else but what they already know.
lockwood has no faith in the system. he ditches adults, forms his own agency out of his literal home, bashes the big agencies and their rules. lockwood operates from an extreme place of privilege—he has his own house to make an agency from, a safe place to go back to. seeing someone he looked up to die because the system failed him leaves him powerless and guilty—even if he can escape the confines of the complex, his friends cannot, and death is coming.

Lucy & George trying out new tea favours
Lucy: How do you think it tastes?
George: Like tea.
Lucy: ...
Lucy: Yes. But is it floral? Bitter? Mildly sweet with notes of buttery-
George: Warm. And wet.

Lockwood being so worried about Lucy and begging Winkman to kill him and leave Lucy unharmed hurts my heart so bad, and then being unable to tell Lucy how he's feeling...

y’all I’ll post more about this later when I can form a coherent thought but the LOCKLYLE in this series OH MY GOD there is SO MUCH we missed out on because Lucy is an unreliable narrator and this just affirms my earlier post about how Locklyle is only slow burn in her and Lockwood’s point of view.

Locklyle Cobra Kai AU where Lucy & Lockwood are rivals at different dojo's, but get pitted to fight together at the All Valley, and Lockwood is like "Oh shit. I think I like her...". And when Kreese comes to take over Cobra Kai, Lockwood leaves and joins Miyagi-Do with Lucy, and they become friends and maybe something more?

Fics to go back to
In the spirit of fighting the "content consumption cycle" of fandom and also wishing a happy birthday to my loveliest girl @itripandfallalot, I want to recommend a few excellent fics of hers that really ought to be reread again and again:
1. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing
It's got Lockwood/George friendship. It's got competent Lockwood (but suffering. Oh boy is he suffering). It's got consistent, lovely, solid Locklyle flowing throughout as an undercurrent and occasionally welling up into a moment of unspeakably intense connection. It's Lockwood's POV throughout George's hospitalisation in TEG and you want to (re-)read it. You want to read it soooo bad.
2. Leave us planked before the graves
Anyone who knows me knows that Quill/Lockwood friendship is my jam, and going back to this fic is making me wonder if this is the one that started it all actually. It's quite a short oneshot, but it packs in a lot of emotional punch. It's a fic that will basically cup your face in its hands and whisper, "you're going to be okay." Short version: Lockwood visits Quill in the hospital after TEG. Neither of them really feel like they deserve to be there, but that doesn't matter even a little. Even shorter version: “Time, Quill. We’ve got so much time.”
3. Lockwood Alone
Who among you can resist a properly devastating black winter fic? Even if you are one of those strange creatures who can, you will still not want to miss this. An absolutely grueling exploration of Lockwood's mindset in the months without Lucy, rare in that it portrays his grief without minimising his strength.
4. We Go Together on the 23rd of December
Really really cleverly done missing episode style fic that makes me mad about the cancellation all over again every time I read it. Swerves from hilarious Kipps/Lockwood banter to a deeply Locklyle first aid moment (and features some truly gorgeous art!). Delicious, effective, sad, striking. All the good things!
5. Lockwood & Co. The Other Side
I couldn't possibly do a rec list without mentioning this! An incredibly ambitious "book 6" project that picks up so many threads that Stroud laid down and weaves them together into something that feels both like a natural continuation and yet completely its own thing. The Locklyle tension is off the charts, the stakes are raised in a natural and believable way, and big questions are posed fearlessly: can ghosts make moral choices? Is there free will in death? Is there something more than the Other Side? I love this fic so much and I can't wait to see where it goes.
