Repeat after me:
ARIZONA IS NOT ALL DESERT
Yes, I live in the Valley of the Sun
Yes, our state capital is named after a mythical fire bird (Phoenix)
Yes, my city gets over 115f (46c) often in summer
But Arizona is NOT only desert
Arizona also has Flagstaff

Y'all hear AZ and immediately jump to the Valley when the state is so much more than that
Az is known for 5 Cs
Citrus, Cattle, Copper, Cotton, and CLIMATE
My state is one of the most diverse in terms of climate in the United States, all of these place are a short drive from my city (🐦‍🔥), you can be sweating bullets, drive a bit, and hit waterfalls, mountains, pine trees, etc
I get "it's a dry heat" is a common joke but I'm so annoyed when ppl hear "Arizona" they immediately jump to cacti and rocks

(hi I'm the anon that lives in arizona & mentioned that flagstaff gets snow)
there is an area. in northeast arizona (around Winslow). where dust storms are an annual, normal weather event
we're talking roads shut down, visibility drop, "don't go outside if you can help it" dust storms and. yea they're a nuisance. if you have to go outside you want decent clothing coverage (the dust stings) & something to cover your eyes, in my experience. also a longer-term consequence is that your house gets so dusty so fast
(sorry to keep showing up & giving you AZ Weather Reports, I just got. very surprised when AZ was mentioned in New Vegas. & then immediately went "well. I live in AZ & have for my whole life, & it's at least a somewhat important location in the story, so")
hello friend!!! this is super interesting esp since in moz's backstory, most of her tribe was buried under a radioactive dust storm (including her, before she was rescued)! it's really cool to learn that there's a place where dust storms happen regularly irl!
i live in a tropical country - desert weather is so far from what i know haha - so thank you so much for these weather reports!!

Trying to pack for 3 weeks away is hard! I don't think I've ever been away on a trip for that long ever (besides going back east to stay with family, which isn't the same)!
I'm going to be in Flagstaff, AZ, living out of a hotel while I work as a Script Supervisor on my next project! *squee* Being paid to travel to a different city makes this feel so REAL. It's so crazy!!!!
But back to my dilemmas. Trying to figure out what is essential to pack, what kind of things I should bring to fill my downtime, etc, is just so overwhelming! I'll be 2.5 hours from home, so no quick turnaround if I forget/want other things, but I'm driving up, so I have a decent amount of space to bring stuff up.
Sorry for the randomness, just trying to organize my thoughts I guess! lol

What was your favorite spot in AZ? Mine is flagstaff
I have a sweet spot for Tempe. I went to undergrad at ASU, and I spent a lot of formative years working at a record store there. Some of my closest friends came from living there and I always feel happy when I visit.

An actual Bio for Val:
THE PAST:
Val is from Flagstaff, AZ, where they work as an EMT.
They currently live with both their parents and their dog, Bolt.
Had a relatively decent upbringing, was a lower middle class household
Can speak both spanish and english due to both parents being second generation immigrants
THE PRESENT & SURVIVAL SKILLS:
They came along to see AC/DC in concert in their home country- apparently they rock harder here if the rumors are to be believed.
As an EMT, they know some basic first aid as well as how to stabilize a patient on the move.
They are good in hot and moderate climates, will complain if snow is present.
Has a light animal magnetism
Knows some basic sewing and embroidery skills
Can work some electronics
SOCIAL:
Are nice, but will let others come to them when it comes to other people and friendships
Tends to support when they finally establish connections with others, or even sees someone on a surface level needing help
Enemies are made slowly, but will have a held grudge for a while before finally being let go
Not very self aware about their feelings romantically/sexually, leading to doomed relationships

This picture was taken when I was in high school of my german shepherd dog, "Sabie" also known as Sabelina Davis.
Sabie got her name because her father was Bear, a white german shepherd. Her mother was a short-haired black and tan female named "Paws" Missy's Lady Von Haas.
My parents were trying to obtain the rare, beautiful color "blue." However, we received this beautiful combination of her mother and father - the sable color. Sabie was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters. I am also the youngest of 7 older brothers, so I felt a connection to Sabie immediately.
I took her to obedience class, and we bonded. She learned my likes and dislikes. She listened very well and shared my calm demeanor. She respected the fact that I did not like her kissing me on the face because she licked her private areas to groom herself, so she would greet me by quickly kissing my elbows.
Sabie always had a sad look to her, unless I called her over or talked to her. I often wondered if she carried my sadness.
Most shepherds are deemed “aggressive,” but as most dog owners know, their dogs react based on their owners’ emotions and reactions. There is research to support this concept based on the VCA Animal Hospitals website. The article is written by Ryan Llera BsC, DVM and Lynn Buzhardt, DVM (Affilate of Mars Inc. 2023).
My mother enrolled Sabie into obedience school with me, and Sabie and I bonded. My parents wanted to sell her to a father and his daughter, but he saw how upset I was, and he told my mother that he couldn’t take her from me, so my parents let me keep her.
I took Sabie on long walks, and I’d talk to her. She would sit while I took pictures of her. I told her I didn’t like being kissed on the face because she licked her private areas, so she would greet me by kissing me on the elbows.
Sabie looked sad a lot, but when I would reach out to her and talk to her, she would wag her tail. I remember she was so excited one day that she wagged her tail so hard that she broke the glass of the cabinet in my parents’ living room. That was the only “bad” thing she had ever done, and it was an innocent mistake.
K-9 victim advocacy program
“Fanta's co-workers will tell you she has a special talent for comforting victims and helping them process their trauma. Advocate Supervisor Deborah Fresquez said she remembers Fanta's first job, a domestic violence case where a two young boys needed to testify against a parent who had harmed them.
She said she was amazed by Fanta's ability to help the children cope with their trauma.
"The little one started hyperventilating, and the judge called a break. Fanta sat on the floor with the little boy. She licked his tears," Fresquez said. "She's amazing to watch.“
Buffon, S. (2019, June 28). Victim Witness pushes to permanently fund K-9 advocate program. Arizona Daily Sun (Flagstaff, AZ).
Scriptures for Consideration
•Mark 9:36-37
•“And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.’”
•Isaiah 54:13
•“All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.”
•Psalm 127:3
•“Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him.”
•Matthew 19:14
•“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ ”
•3 John 1:4
•“I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.”
Scripture on Being with Animals
Job 12: 7-10
“But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.”
