Angst Idea: MK1 Liu Kang is in love with a member of the Lin Kuei but finds out that she ends up siding with Bi Han after Bi Han turns on him. Not cause she hates Liu Kang but because she thinks Bi Han is right about the Lin Kuei needing to break away from Liu Kang.

"I'm sorry."

Your voice comes out in a shaky whisper, "But he's right."

"My love," Liu Kang says, a lump forming in his throat as he tries to reach out to you, both physically and emotionally. Yet, you pull away from him in every sense of the word.

You were unflinchingly loyal--especially to your clan, the Lin Kuei. The Keeper of Time had hoped to find you and bring you away with him before the Grandmaster Bi-Han, had returned from the coup failure at the Ying Fortress.

Before his ideals, twisted by Shang Tsung, had reached your ears.

But he had failed, and by the time he was able to meet you in your secret meeting spot... You had already been convinced, your mind concluded by your unwavering loyalty to your duty, your oath.

Even if that meant breaking his heart.

And yours.

You felt the crags in your heart deepen as you watched his hands fall to his sides, his glowing alabaster eyes pained and sorrowful as he watched you retreat from his touch.

"Liu Kang." You rasp, trying to fight the tide of tears that threatened to spill over the dams of your eyelashes, "He's right. We have depended on you for too much, we've become weak. We... We need new direction. The Grandmaster can provide that. We need our independence, we need to be true warriors again."

"New direction built on the blind pride of a man swelled by his own ego." Liu Kang pleaded, fists clenching, "He will only lead you all to failure to serve his own greed!"

You finally reached out, a single tear slipping down your cheek as your fingers brushed his face, tentatively; reverently.

"Liu Kang." You whispered his name once more.

"Please. Come with me." He begged you.

"I can't. I have my duty, and you... you have yours." You replied, your voice wavering slightly, but not betraying your stout beliefs.

He closes his eyes and inhales deeply. Your hands were cold. As cold as the snow that flurried around the both of you in this secret, once-beloved meeting space. A space where you two shared heated, searing touches and pleasured breaths on stolen nights away from the world.

A place that now, would only remind you both of this cold, heart-breaking goodbye.

Despite the pain, Liu Kang smiled as you swipe the tear away from his cheek with your thumb, "I know... I hope... one day, you will return to me."

You gave him one final, chaste kiss. An icy farewell to the memories you both are forced to bury within your hearts, to try and fill in the cracks.

As you pulled away, Liu Kang stepped back.

As he disappeared through the portal, he didn't need to see or hear you to know that you fell to your knees, crying and sobbing until your throat was ragged and sore. Your heart torn from what it desired, to the oaths and fealty you had sworn during childhood.
