As a dark romance girlie I didn’t think I’d ever find a book that would scare me. I’ve read the most unhinged books with a straight face until I read Little stranger.. he literally puts a tarantula on her face and sings Itsy bitsy spider while 👉🏻👌🏼 her 😭😭 I’ve found my limit. Wow 😭

I've recommended this fic by @kosmochlor on my blog before, and I'm gonna do it again. It's far and away the best thing written about Becca Butcher. If that sounds like faint praise to you-- hell, the TV show couldn't be assed to give her a full-fledged personality-- it is not. It's well-written, and meticulously plotted. It's also quite kinky, which might not be what you expect from the first chapter lol. It is a very interesting take on what would happen if Becca survived season 2, and instead of hiding out in safehouses with Ryan trying to keep out of Homelander's sight, took the fucking reins of her life back. Went public with her story (or at least a fictional version of it). Made Homelander, Vought, and Billy play along. All while keeping Ryan safe and more or less out of harm's way.

Fans of women who deserved better in canon, read it. Butchlander fans, read it. It's an interesting twist on this triangle that underpins the show's main conflict, and lets a fridged victim come to vibrant, quirky life.

Review - Little Stranger, Leigh Rivers

Any credibility built up in the post immediately before this will be brought down if people who don’t know this book go and search it up. My cross to bear, but I did warn that I read literally anything.

This is a dark romance, and not my first foray into the subgenre (I have a dark and sordid past, yet to be revealed). There are many trigger warnings, and all of them were put there for a valid reason, in my opinion. Read at your own risk.

Onto my thoughts and opinions, I suppose. Without further ado, I think it’s safe to say I did not enjoy this book. Romance isn’t the right word for what this relatively short book was. Erotica is probably the correct term. To preface, I do not like erotica. I’ll read it, just like I’d watch a car crash. Horror, shock, a morbid fascination with the disturbing. Not enjoyment though.

One thing I will say, is that the FMC Olivia was the freakiest, kinkiest woman I have ever met. I don’t know what I was expecting, but everything seemed to turn her on. Everything. Including *spoiler* getting shagged over her dad’s unconscious body. What a strange thing to write and implement into this book. Everything else, to an extent, I could at least understand that somewhere out there was probably someone who was reading it and thinking this was a fantasy come to life. But who on earth has fantasised that particular scenario? I could excuse him being turned on by being called “big brother”, I could excuse her being turned on by being terrified for her life, I could excuse just about anything. That was where I drew the line. To be fair, the brother-sister thing was also bad, but at least that was an established and known thing going into reading this. I had time to come to grips with that aspect, peculiar as it may be.

I just could not understand who this book’s target audience was. The s*x scenes were incredibly graphic and gratuitous, especially when there was an almost complete lack of emotional connection. It is established they are foster siblings. Immediately from that moment onwards, the MMC Malachi is absolutely obsessed. They are seven and eight years old at this point. Obviously, this is a short book, and Leigh Rivers clearly had a clear direction as to where this book was going, but part one was well-paced, and so as a result part two moved at breakneck speed. It left me incredibly jarred and considering where we left off part one, I’m not sure how I read the last quarter or so of this book with a straight face.

Overall, I am deeply shocked that I disliked this book. That was sarcasm, just for the record. This is the first time a dark romance has genuinely come across as dark. Pitch black. I’ve dabbled in the past, but not recently, and this has genuinely seared my brain. At every turn, I was keeping voice recordings of my reactions, just to make sure I had evidence that this book existed.

Originally I had Little Stranger on my DNF list because I genuinely couldn't move past page 37. Well, I decided to pick it back up like an hour ago and I'm on page 51 and boy am I conflicted

I feel so weird reading this but I also read the warnings beforehand so this is on me

@kosmochlor I can’t believe you were asking if this qualifies for Kinktober. This is not only the best piece on Becca that I think exists on AO3, it is also twisted in ways that aren’t for shock value but an organic part of the “plot”.

This fic ended me. Nothing in chapter 1 prepared me for chapter 2. 🥵😢💀

Mind the tags, there’s a lot going on. But… also… this fic is much more than the sum of its warning tags. Just read it and wince.

Loop hip-hop artists Little Stranger. I saw them when they toured with New Kingston . After seeing some of their videos and live stuff on YouTube I am now a fan. Glad I caught them and will see them live again when they hit the East Coast.
