one thing i haven't seen talked about is how definitively and bleakly the birthday party scene highlighted how much christopher has grown since eddie last saw him. i don't think that's something eddie has begun to confront yet. in some part of his mind, he thinks the christopher that comes back (whenever that is) is going to be the same christopher that left. but it's not and he's not. he's not just stagnating like eddie is. he's living. he's growing. and the type of party that eddie set up with the banner, and the party hats, it was... cute. for a little boy. possibly even for the boy christopher was before he walked in on his dad hugging his dead mom. or who he thought was his dead mom. but that changes a lot, doesn't it? unparalleled hope followed swiftly by unparalleled disappointment is a hell of a thing to live through.

so he's older. not just chronologically. he's older on the inside in ways that could rival most adults. and eddie doesn't realize that. because christopher is, and always will be, his little boy, yes, but. in eddie's mind, christopher has become frozen in amber over the last few months. frozen in anger, frozen at thirteen, paused right in the moment before eddie breaks his heart. and he thinks he still knows his son. so he breaks out the noise makers, and the party hats, and... it's all so fucking stupid.

it's stupid because christopher is not a child, he's a teenager now with teenage interests that his dad's not privy to. it's stupid because a "surprise party" is not really a surprise when you thought for a few seconds your mom was back, and you don't know if you can ever trust another "surprise" from your dad ever again. it's stupid because eddie's kid has grown up, and eddie himself is still frozen in time. and that's a recurring theme in his life. he's frozen in the moment before christopher left. frozen in the moment that shannon died. frozen in the moment she asked for the divorce. frozen in the moment they met.

i don't think he'll know what to do or who he'll become when time unsticks.

i think that scares him.

i think that makes him sick. i think that's why he wants to pretend a little while longer. but time waits for no man, and his life, his son, is passing him by.

he's almost been left behind, and he needs to do a lot of work on himself if he wants to catch up.

I feel like there is a definite uptick in wanting to see Hornblower suffer for people who've read past Beat To Quarters/The Happy Return. Like I think you can't get past the original trilogy without thinking that he should squirm a little bit for his crimes

#i feel like the first five books you're like he sucks sometimes but he's really just a wet kitten you want to bring in from the rain #and then you get to book six and it's like he's your adult grown cat who goes out in the rain and comes back sopping wet #and then starts complaining despite the fact that they knew full well what they were doing #<- this may not be a universally understood experience for people whose cats don't like going out for a little shower #and then strongly dislike getting toweled off when they come back in #but you understand what i'm going for here. no matter even if you still like him as a character he's digging himself that hole #and sometimes he damn well deserves it. and sometimes getting him out is more trying than if he was a wild raccoon #your mileage may vary with this; some people see through him sooner and some people don't really want to psychologically torture him #even after all his shenanigans in the later books. but it's just something that i've noticed #perce rambles #hornblower #with my apologies to the people in the tag #also this is not to put people off the later books him being the worst is really really fun and he and bush are even more insane #also nb: i do really really love hornblower as a character and i do want him to be happy sometimes dw :')

gunna be real my mother in law crossed some lines today that i dont even know how to come back from. how do i make 10k in the next 6 months to pack up and leave actually though.

#personal shit below the tags #just venting about getting dragged into high school drama as an adult #which is my fault because i help coach a high school dance team #long story short my best friend is moving out of the state and won't be coaching next year #and is trying to set it up so i take over as head coach #but she was talking to two of the kids about it today to give them a preliminary heads up and #they straight up said that if the current assistant coach gets the job #none of the team will be going back #but that if i get the job everyone will come back #this grown ass woman has thought i've been trying to take her assistant coach job all year #when i have been perfectly happy as a volunteer #and this whole thing was extremely validating and such a bummer all at once because like #i just won't engage with the drama she's been trying to bring and it bums me out that the kids have noticed it #i've been trying really hard to stay professional in front of them and thought i was doing a good job #i HAVE been doing a good job #but the captain knows what i'm like as a coach because i was her head coach her freshman year and so she's noticed the difference in me #so yeah incredibly validating because every time i've been down this year about this #i've been like 'they know which of us is here for THEM and not the STATUS'#and it turns out i was correct this whole time #they DO know and they have been feeling it which is the last thing i wanted for them #so yeah validating and a bummer all at once #we'll find out within the next couple weeks if i will still be coaching next year #every time i vent about this i feel like i'm trying to sound like i have the moral high ground #it gives me the ick about myself

Dan and Phil have been hyping up this "special announcement" for this "secret project" in a way they never have before with others in the past making it clear that this was a very big deal

They'd also made it clear that they've been busting their asses on this secret project, were really excited about it and were expecting us to be excited about whatever this was

It was supposed to be a huge surprise

Well... greedy and impatient fans were scouring the internet for any crumb of evidence that they were going on another tour and saw that ticketmaster posted the promo for the Aus/NZ leg of the tour before the official announcement was made (in error due to timezone difference)

Had people just been patient no one would have known about this before it was fixed

The person/people who originally saw this should have kept their mouth shut or notified dan and/or phil about it (its very easy to get in contact with them/their team)

this will be the 3rd tour as a duo and their first tour together since coming out as gay/confirming their relationship (and also just not giving a fuck about how they're perceived anymore)

so this was quite significant (hence why they'd been hyping it so much) and is something the phandom has been looking forward to for years

And it all got completely spoiled by "tour truthers" searching for evidence

i honestly feel like even going to a rage room wouldn't help barton because, since people would still be watching him in a way (through the cameras and such) he'd feel like he'd have to hold some of his anger back and thus, the whole thing wouldn't feel anywhere near as cathartic to him as it should be. no... barton just needs to be able to go back to his childhood home and smash everything. and i mean, of course it wouldn't solve everything, but in his mind — at least it'd make him feel a little better.

#am i only a sophomore so i really dont need to be thinking about this?#yeah #but from ages 9-14 my plan was to pursue theater #but come freshman year i had a bit of a breakdown and wasn't sure what i wanted to do anymore #tbh my ideal job is twitch streaming/youtube but that probably wont happen. at the very least im not gonna count on it #but theater. i could do that. im good at it. just not sure if i wanna do it #its a really stressful and tiring thing #and ive just done school theater and summer camp stuff #so i can imagine professional grown-up theater #based on my drama teacher's stories. its a lot.#idk if i have the energy or ability to do that. especially considering my neurodivergence makes stuff complicated.#like sensory issues executive functioning emotional dysregulation etc etc etc #adult me will be able to cope better than teenage me but. idk.#i mean i could try it out and see how i like it. go to college for it or something like that. but those programs are so competitive #i dont wanna take a spot from someone who could actually do something when i just wanna try it but am hoping to be an internet CC #am i overthinking it maybe yeah probably #but im constantly surrounded by the seniors in the drama club who are flipping their shit over college apps bc of how competitive it gets #ok ramble over thanks for listening tumblr #my mom isn't home so i cant talk her ear off #so y'all get my thoughts
