Meet Paige and Rose, my mom's usual go-to sitters for Rey.

"'Sitters?'" I laughed. "What are you—a loth-cat?"

"Well, they can't be my babysitters, because I'm not a baby!" Rey huffed.

...Anyway. Paige is my age. Rose is eighteen...and also? Weirdly obsessed with me.

"You're Ben Solo!" Rose said when she first laid eyes on me. "The Ben Solo!"

I get that often enough that I kinda like to milk it, just a little bit. I struck a cocky stance. "Yeah, that's me—son of Alderaan's last princess, nephew of the Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker—"

"—and author of Ask Ben Solo. I've read your entire blog. Four times."

Ooh. Oooooh.

Rose spent the entire night glued to my side, asking me questions about things that had happened in my teenage years that even I don't remember—but, hey! I finally found someone who wanted to listen to all 15,000 words of my KOR OC's tragic backstory!

Also—hi, Rose. Since I know now that you're probably reading this.

"Drop the lost Ask Ben Solo files, Ben! Please!"

"The—the what?"

"Your college memoirs! Your fans deserve to know everything that happened in those mysterious five years of silence!" Rose lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper. "Me. I'm 'your fans.'"

"Uhh...I'll consider it," I chuckled.

...I wonder how many of my anons were literally just Rose Tico.

Paige is much less social than her sister. I tried talking to her a couple of times, and it didn't really go anywhere—you ask Paige something, and she'll answer you with like five words and go silent again. She kinda has the quietness of someone who's been through hell...and, maybe, hasn't quite made it out yet.

Seems nice, though. And like a good big sister. She kept Rey (and Rose) (okay, fine, AND me) from running into traffic like, ten times.

Paige didn't wear a costume. Rose dressed up as Senator Jar-Jar Binks (and now that I'm a Nabooian citizen, I found that sort of...distasteful, but I chose not to comment on it).

I dressed up as my KOR character, Kylo Ren. He has a super-cool scar on his face that is totally not the result of a slippery-bathtub-shaving-accident. Also—he? And the Dark Lady Revan? Are so totally married and in love or whatever.

Not because I’m into that sap, of course. Just because I want Revan and Kylo to have insanely-overpowered evil Sith babies together. (REVLO FOREVER, I will not tolerate anti-Revlo hate on this blog, BYE.)

Rey, as promised, dressed up as Emperor Palpatine, and had a Force-lightning prop she had made out of cellu-board. "Goooood, gooooooood!" she cackled whenever someone filled her bucket with candy. Despite being a wiry little thirteen-year-old girl, the Palpatine character seemed to come really...naturally to her. Weird.

Well, Happy Halloween!! Rey and I are about to have a candy-eating contest—and I have to prove to her that I ain't boring now just because I got old.

Beetee:

all of my beetee hcs and thoughts (well, most of them) will be compiled in my fic about him. but i’m sure i can think of some more without spoiling everything…

he really liked superheroes when he was younger. he thought that the idea of someone whose sole purpose in life was to save people was really cool.

he tends to hyper-focus on things when he’s stressed, agitated, or trying not to think about something.

his aunt on his mother’s side and uncle on his dad’s side both went into the hunger games, the 16th and the 14th respectively.

his hair can get really long during the off season or when he’s not in the Capitol. his prep team always has a heart attack over the “state he let his hair come to” as if he had let a bird lay eggs in it or something.

in relation to that: adeline sometimes braids it when she needs something to do with her hands.

in terms of victors, he was preceded by Paris Sanford of One and succeeded by Stella Fairchild of Four.

he’s particularly close with Paris (see this post!) honestly, their relationship is really important to the general plot of… everything basically.

Wiress:

she was considered a knife expert in Three, especially with throwing knives, due to it being an activity she performed at her mother’s circus. for obvious reasons, it helped her a lot in the games.

she got a training score of nine. the only reasons she wasn’t immediately chased by careers was because of the girl from seven’s training score of ten.

she has insanely long hair, like almost hitting the top of her thighs long. she had to crudely use a knife to chop most of it off during her first games, but she grew it back out after she won.

her district partner was her ex-boyfriend who had cheated on her. she refused to shake his hand when their escort told them to since she “didn’t know where his hand had been”.

she’s either dressed extremely regally with gowns and expensive jewelry and heels or she looks like she just rolled out of bed. there’s absolutely no in between.

she’s addicted to shitty capitol reality tv.

she’s preceded by Zircon (“Conner”) Lewis from One and succeeded by Wattson Amott from Five.

Beetee and Wiress:

the most important thing to remember about beetee and wiress’ relationship is that they started as the strangest situationship in the history of mankind.

half of the victors are also convinced they have never left this stage of their relationship, but a lot of the younger victors are like convinced that the two are just really good friends and haskell is just like ??? no???? it’s common knowledge that they’ve been fucking for like two decades?????

but anyways… wiress couldn’t sleep after her victory and for some reason beetee was the only person who made her feel safe enough to fall asleep for more than half an hour so they both started sleeping in the same house, same room, same bed… before they were even close to the romantic stage of their relationship.

wiress catches feelings because… well, it’s wiress. but beetee is completely emotionally repressed (we love that for him) so he just pretends he doesn’t notice.

beetee has a lot of trouble accepting love from anyone, and it takes him a few years before he gets used to the thought of anyone being in love with him. and, of course, it’s even more complicated in practice…

basically it takes them like nine years for beetee to finally be like “hey… i think i’m in love with you…” and of course wiress is completely flabbergasted by this while everyone else is like “that’s been painfully obvious for at least five years where have you been??”

i mentioned on a post a few days back that their relationship is really complicated in a lot of people’s eyes and here’s why: the capitol doesn't know they’re together. like at all. i mean snow does but snow knows everything so that’s obvious. but seriously there’s a running debate with beetee fans (you can not tell me that capitol citizens don’t have favorite victors bc i’m right) over if he’s dating anyone and if he is who. and then the top answers are always either paris or wiress… so those two fanbases just absolutely despise each other. and so everyone expects wiress and paris to hate each other… honestly it’s just a convoluted mess lol.

wiress wore her wedding ring during her interview for the 75th hunger games and the capitol absolutely went batshit over it. (and caesar flickerman probably lost like twenty years on his lifespan that night too lol).

then beetee follows her, talks about how the quell should be examined for legality for about five seconds, then just starts yapping about how amazing his wife is and caesar is just sitting there like 🪑😶.

hellooo deviating from the usual a little bit here, sorry, but would it be okay w you to share a little about your academic career and yk all that because im applying for a STEM degree too so any insight would be really cool!! thank youuuu <3

Hi anon! Sure thing! I'm a little flattered honestly.

I'm currently working towards my PhD in physics (hence my obsession with data haha) so I can really only give advice in that field. In terms of my journey, in school I pretty gifted academically, 99th percentile and all that bullshit and it came to applying for unis/degrees and I had an option between doing a History & English or a physics degree. In school I definitely enjoyed the humanities more, but I've never regretted my decision to go with STEM, physics especially, because it teaches you a certain way to think. In my undergraduate degree I was trained to look at a situation, evaluate the context of it, try and collect data that is unbiased as possible, and draw conclusions, and that's a set of invaluable transferable skills that can be applied to a multitude of fields.

To someone who's just starting out in STEM now my advice would be: network, network, network. My partner and I are both doing PhDs that we got not through applying but through networking. Everyone is as smart as everyone else in STEM. Everyone was an honours kid, everyone did the "smart people" extracurriculars, so STEM, especially academia, runs on who you know. Networking these days can be as simple as asking someone slightly senior than you to grab coffee, as agreeing to go bouldering (for example) with a group of people in the same field as you. Be confident in your skills and abilities, (but beware that arrogance won't get you very far in the being liked game, especially if you're anything other than a white cis man). Don't let your studies get in the way of you being an interesting person! For example, I met a colleague from another university a couple of weeks ago and she and I bantered over our F1 teams, with her defending McLaren and me ride or die-ing for Ferrari, and I've since been roped into her mailing list and am collaborating with her on a grant application, things I'm SURE would not have happened if F1 wasn't an interesting hobby of mine that I can and will take every chance to yap about.

As a final aside, don't let yourself get too discouraged. STEM is NOT for the faint of heart and definitely not the place to go if you want to keep feeling smart. The first two years of any STEM degree are designed to break people in a specific way so that they let go of their ego, yes it is part of the process and YES everyone is struggling just as much as you (that's actually want they want you to figure out!), so that then they can enter the world of research with as little ego as possible (this works to varying degrees of success). But honestly, STEM is so rewarding. To have this really in depth knowledge of how part of our world works is fascinating. Your friends who work in non-STEM fields will understand absolutely none of it, and you'll get to a point where even the effort of trying to explain it to other fields of STEM is too monumental (for example, I understand enough about basic aero in order to get to grips with F1 cars, but a friend of mine is doing aero research and he spent about ten minutes the other month trying to explain push/pull bars in F1 cars to a group of PhD students comprising of: theoretical physicist, astrophysicist, plasma physicist, a quantum physicist, and mechanical engineer before the poor guy almost gave up and had a nervous breakdown because none of us were getting it). I think part of the beauty of STEM is realising how little you know, and how much of it there is for us to still work out.

harry was the first person since the big bang to ask the goblin serving him their name, and so he's offered a piece of super-secret goblin magic which wizards who aren't so fabulous aren't allowed to know about: the goblin will test his blood for evidence of magical coercion.

"i'm sure there's no magical coercion," harry says, because he's kind and loyal and also super buff.

but he's wrong!!!!!!! the goblin performs the magic and then discovers no only that there's a horcrux living in harry's scar [which he neatly extracts, dumbledore could never], but that his blood shows he's been given magical mystery loyalty potions for years.

"how can that be?" asks harry. and then it hits him. there's no way someone like him - rich and also cool - would be friends with someone poor and ginger, like ron. he'd never set foot in a place like the burrow, because the interior design is too twee and he doesn't give a shit about loving families because not being independent is for losers.

"dumbledore has been drugging me to make me loyal to ron for some reason!" he gasps.

BACKSTORY

as briefly mentioned above, seonah was born in staten island, new york on august 7th, 1998.

her parents, originally from daegu, built a life stateside in the early '90s, so they were already pretty blended into the american routine by the time they had seonah.

in new york, seonah often went by her english name ramona, often shortened to mona. the name was derived from an old jazz singer and pianist her mother loved.

one of the main reasons seonah's parents even moved from south korea was so that her mother could try her luck at the new york jazz scene. she was a gifted pianist with quick hands who had always ensured seonah's life was filled with music.

those very sessions with fellow musicians she worked with were the catalyst for seonah's obsession with the saxophone. a musician seonah would always call uncle franklin would come and play the sax at their south shore townhome, while the small child watched and danced along.

he was actually the one to gift seonah her very own saxophone at age ten, by which her younger sister seoyeol had been born and was clinging to seonah's legs while she struggled to play the instrument.

the characteristics of her music were very much shaped by the staten island jazz scene, and the city's famous festival was a tradition for the whole family.

from her father did seonah inherit a love of gardening, building terrariums and making sure a healthy amount of green was present in all her decorating. she and her father would spend hours carefully placing moss, stones, grass and water in small glass containers until they resembled miniature nature scenes.

she spent a good amount of time in her dad's store as well, helping him stock and clean up throughout her childhood. the value of hard work was an early lesson for seonah and it would likely stick with her permanently.

that store, however, would come to be the site of a horrible tragedy that would uproot many lives.

TRIGGER WARNING AHEAD

her mother and father were working the late shift at the store one night when a masked gunman entered, demanding cash. her parents were both killed during the exchange, leaving seonah and her sister to grieve them at far too young an age.

as the two had no other blood relatives in the area, their parents' friends franklin and his wife delisle were named in a will to take the children in and raise them as their own.

it was an extremely tough transition, but the pair, along with another of their parents' closest friends adam made sure the sisters never went without love and encouragement. they refused to let the children's view of the world become twisted due to what they had gone through, and they were a huge part of why the two made it through that period of their lives.

END TRIGGER WARNING

now being raised by franklin, seonah was kept occupied by saxophone lessons, camping trips, walks through the city — any and everything she loved simply to keep her mind off the tragedy her family had faced.

despite her new guardians' best efforts to make her childhood fulfilling, seonah couldn't help but feel somewhat aimless after the passing of both her parents, and even a bit disconnected from them. she developed a fairly unbothered demeanor that some would even mistake for just not caring, though that was the furthest thing from the truth.

as she finished out her primary schooling and prepared to apply to the manhattan school of music, she floated the idea of possibly traveling to her parents' home city of daegu after graduating college to franklin and delisle. they met the idea with approval, thinking it was an excellent chance to reconnect with a past she'd never really gotten to discover.

after training up her musical talents to her instructors' satisfaction, it was finally time to say farewell to her family. she couldn't have said thank you to franklin, delisle and adam more times if she'd tried. seonah looked upon her now teenaged sister with slight guilt, feeling as though she were abandoning her for her own selfish reasons. seoyeol simply threw her arms around seonah and promised her she'd seek out universities in daegu so they could see each other soon.

and that was it, she was off to daegu with a graduation present of a one way flight and some won to run on until she found work. thankfully, that didn't take too long, as she found a pretty fancy restaurant looking for jazz musicians of her caliber.

seonah made a vow to herself that she would only speak in korean and only use her korean name until she felt that familiar connection to her parents once more.

she soon found a home in the confines of sueunju sharehouse, and though it's filled with strangers, it reminds her of the blended household she lived in back in staten island and even makes her oft expressionless visage falter into a smile. though she is still very much getting used to living in daegu two years on, her life is in a place of contentment for the time being. she continues to chase memories that have long since passed her by, barely conscious of all the new ones she is making in the process.

PERSONALITY

some would call her an ice queen, but she's more like a snow angel. like she's definitely composed, doesn't like to argue and sometimes comes off as though she's silently plotting your demise in a corner, but there is a warmth to seonah that is unmistakable. she can be so cold to the touch but also reach directly into your heart and make you melt. she is a mess of contradicting thoughts and feelings and words, but she could be ur mess of contradicting thoughts and feelings and words, u know???

only really loses her cool when it comes to music she's excited about, if her heart's a little bit broken or if she's lost something near and dear to her (her saxophone goes missing, one of her terrariums get broken, etc) and it's sad, but also kind of funny cmvnbvncb!

she's very inquisitive, especially about the daily routine in daegu. she desperately wants to know more about the lives her parents lived before they moved to america, and being that she's only been in south korea for two years, she isn't as in touch with things as she feels like she should be. stop her if she's asking too many questions — she just gets into a flow of seeking information and doesn't realize it sometimes!

a girl of many hobbies: gardening, camping, building terrariums, hitting up the thrift store, smoking on roofs, seeing performances at masquerade, noraebang, etc. and she loves doing these things with friends! partake in any of these activities with her, and you'll earn a special place in her heart and the slightest aura of a smile just for you.

sometimes she just??? disappears. sometimes her social energy simply runs out and she needs some time to recharge it. she's not trying to ghost, she promises! she just needs a couple days of mirror glaring and deep rumination before she's ready to have company again.

a wanted plot of mine (!!!!!!) but i also hc her as recently single with a lot of regretful and reluctant pining for her ex lol. she's in her slightly reckless era in an attempt to forget them, so pls forgive her for any messy moments 😘

His song is catchy as all heck and is one of my favorites of the whole series (especially ryusouta's cover, holy crap it's good). Weird for a repulsed aroace, I know, but it is what it is.

Super sad backstory that I can relate to in some ways. I wasn't locked in a basement for all my childhood or anything, but I was teased for my appearance quite a bit, even by some of my loved ones.

In a QPR (queer platonic relationship) with Shadow.

Tails: (I don't feel comfortable labeling the sexuality of a literal ten year old lmao/lh), transmasc, he/they. Looks up to Sonic, literally aims to be exactly like him: he's the only other trans person he knows (who's out to him, at least), and he's cool asf. Admires his bravery. Tails sees Sonic as an older brother figure, and Sonic sees him as a little brother. They've got the ultimate brotherly bond, which also means they argue over the dumbest shit lol.

Knuckles: panromantic, pansexual, transfemme, he/him. Masc presenting, gives off egg vibes (not because he's masc presenting and uses he/him, but because he's hella clueless about trans people). Isn't out to ANYONE, not even himself.💀

Amy: heteroromantic, heterosexual, cisgender, she/they. MASSIVE ally, one of those friends who gives their gay friends rainbow pride merch(/pos).

Shadow: panromantic, asexual, non-binary, all pronouns including it/its, slight preference for he/him. Doesn't give a fuck about gender; they think it's irrelevant to who they are. Though he has pronoun preferences, if someone referred to it using pronouns other than he/him, he would literally not care.

kh1

story - 7/10. it wasn't the most interesting but it was the first and laid the groundwork for the series. maleficent had a lot of screentime which is always a big plus. love her evil ass. it's also the start of the 'kairi never gets to do anything ever and gets kidnapped every time she tries' persisting problem in the whole series

gameplay - 6/10. feels a bit clunky now in comparison to some of the newer ones. it was harder than some later ones, but mostly because of wonky control issues and not great boss fights. but it's very playable and fun still. mushrooms do a little dance and shake their butt at you. i will never not feel nostalgic about traverse town music. THANK GOD YOU CAN SKIP THE PRE FIGHT CUTSCENES ON RETRIES NOW OH MY GOD YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND THE ONE BEFORE THE DARK RIKU FIGHT WAS LIKE TEN MINUTES AND BACK IN THE DAY YOU HAD TO REWATCH IT EVERY TIME AAHHHHJHHH *i am tranquilized and removed from the room*

re: chain of memories

story - 8/10. i love the focus on the organization 13 internal drama. bitches are running around bad mouthing and killing each other. larxene is a constant joy. marluxia is pretty and goes swish swish and makes flowers. axel was an instant fave. zexion is a shitty twink and i do so love shitty twinks. there was some disney stuff too i guess

gameplay - 2/10. the first time i played it my brother was crashing at my apartment and watching me play and got very into making cool deck combos. so i had him do that for me and i did the combat and the fun sibling shenanigans got me through it. this time i quit after thirty minutes and watched the cutscenes on youtube. it's just so repetitive and meh

story - 7/10. that's too many soras! put some back! story was a bit slow at times but i did enjoy seeing the daily life of the organization and axel/saïx handling their divorce so so well. needed more demyx

gameplay - it's packaged as a movie now so i did not replay the game and can't fairly rate it. i remember it being not the best combat but not terrible for a ds game

kh2

story - 8/10. it would get higher but the fact the beginning is incomprehensible if you haven't played com and 358 loses it some points....i had not played com when i got kh2 and boy howdy. it made more sense on the replay of course and yeah it's a good story. obsessed with how maleficent remains one of the main recurring characters in this series and just Does Shit from time to time because why not. god forbid women do anything etc. also the gay divorce continues to go terribly. saïx is handling this so well i say as he goes into berserk mode again. needed more riku screentime tho

gameplay - 9/10. huge upgrade from previous titles. it was very fun and fluid. the form shifts were a great addition. there were a lot of options but it didn't feel overwhelming or like it disrupted combat. my only real complaint was it felt a bit too on rails at some parts... like cutscene, battle, walk three steps repeat. oh and i hated the gummi missions but i am a gummi hater in general. oh also antiform was amazing. sora can turn into a feral creature... as a treat

birth by sleep

story - 10/10. fuck i love birth by sleep. aqua my beloved daughter who is the most terrifying keyblade master ever. terra my troubled son who got fucked over by shitty adults on an hourly basis. ven the thousand year old little kid who has never caught a break once. also hey it's xehanort and he also has ex husband drama. only note is that aqua should get to say fuck

gameplay - 10/10. the command deck was right up my alley and command forms were the best form gameplay they've done. i loved how all three kids had a unique style and abilities. i loved melding cards and gems to make new cards. i enjoyed playing monopoly. i thought it was the best game in the series when i first played it and that remains true

re:coded

story - 6/10. it was okay? it was largely a rehash but did add a few things. my friend and i kept saying welcome back alvis whenever data riku used a computer so that was fun

gameplay - this was also presented as a movie in the bundle so i won't score it. i don't even remember how it was from way back when i played it

dream drop distance

story- 9/10. the games that switch between multiple perspectives seem to be my favorites and i think it's partly that it makes the story more interesting. the time traveling norts were a bit wtf but that's just an inescapable part of the series. inspired me to get twewy which i will be playing next. MEOW WOW!!!!!

gameplay - 9/10. flowmotion was really neat and fit the style well. i loved the pokemon aspect so much you have no idea. i was a little sad you couldn't meld command cards but it would have been Too Much with all the other stuff going on. a few fights near the end had some really dumb mechanics (the type where when you look up a guide it just says good luck) but there were also some excellent ones. i do think it lost a little something in the port because the stylus on 3ds was important. however there is nothing is quite as satisfying as seeing meow wow hit xehanort with giant bouncy orbs so I'm willing to forgive it a lot

union x/back cover/dark road

story - 9/10. i was shocked how much i enjoyed the story of these. i got very invested and i was only watching the cutscenes, not playing. really interesting world building and the master of masters was an instant fave. one of the only kh titles that passes (barely) the bechdel somehow. also could be retitled as kh: dead kids, because boy did a lot of kids die! extra points for maleficent managing to set major events in motion twice and being very eh whatever about it. love her for that. and the backstory of the xehanort/eraqus divorce, of course. i love a good divorce

gameplay - didn't play this one, just watched ELEVEN HOURS of cutscenes. no longer available which is hilarious considering how much important lore is in it that is referenced in kh3. hopefully they make it into a single player offline game someday with better gameplay

gameplay - 8/10. it felt like a rough draft for kh3 and that meant it didn't have all the annoying extra crap kh3 added in and played pretty smoothly. i liked the little puzzles. it was a unique game and i enjoyed it more than i expected

story - 6/10. the fact i had to sit through entire disney movies worth of cutscenes brings the score way down. we did not need to see 3 musical numbers in frozen. if i wanted that I'd watch the movie. i just wanted to play the damn game. the majority of the game is sora got benched and has to get his groove back which was very disappointing for the climatic finale to the series. once i got into the end game though it was much better (i would rate the later game stuff way above a 6 which just makes my frustration with earlier stuff worse). re:mind added in the bits i felt were missing and i came away satisfied overall with the wrap up. axel/saïx had divorce arc three and then got back together finally 🏳️‍🌈🥂🎉. xehanort/eraqus also got back together as they fucked off to be gay in the afterlife. finally we are free of the norts (OR ARE WE???) and the master and the foretellers are slated to come back next from the looks of things. maleficent continues to hang out in the wings waiting for opportunities to #girlboss and I'm excited too see what cataclysmic events she sets off next

so that's it. i did watch the brief melody of a memory scenes but there wasn't too much new there. i may watch the cs from the missing link beta at some point. otherwise it's back to my life long journey of waiting for the next title to drop

gameplay - 5/10. ugh. i bought the game when it came out but between the full length disney movies and the over saturated gameplay gimmicks i didn't get far. this time i powered through and by the end i was enjoying it for the most part because I'd figured out what things to ignore and how to avoid them. attractions were the worst addition to gameplay ever. everything was too flashy. way too many instances of being locked in a "cool" transition animation instead of actually doing combat which broke up the flow of things. i missed the command deck and how much it let you customize your play style. i didn't like the keys being locked to command forms as much as the bbs forms since it meant if you had a keyblade with better stats but hated the special on it you were kinda fucked. this became less of a problem as the game went but was still annoying. overall felt like a step back from the others. they tried to do too much. oh also why were there ten thousand instances of having to learn new controls for some new mini game in every area??? just let me hit things i am begging you. it really felt like they went for cool spectacles over satisfying gameplay

general notes on all of them: i enjoyed the story much more this time due to being able to play them in order. the fact they all released on different platforms originally made the complicated story even more confusing since i couldn't afford to buy a new system every time a new one came out. i really hope they veer away from that practice in the future but i kinda doubt it especially since they've got another mobile game lined up already. while the disney stories were fun early on it felt like the story outgrew them (except for the characters who were in the main story as well like mickey and maleficent) and they were kinda a drag by 3. i doubt they can move away from those since they're the whole gimmick of the series but it would be better imo. deeply worried they'll start bringing in newer disney acquisitions.

one of my biggest complaints about the series has always been how few female characters there are and how little many of them are used. it got slightly better later in the series but overall was still not great, especially for kairi. i kept wondering if they added stuff for her in re:mind due to complaints about this.... the dlc felt like an apology for several things tbh. aqua was great but she shouldn't be the only one and even she got upstaged in kh3 when she's supposed to be the third most powerful keyblade master. weirdly enough maleficent was probably the best written female character. really wild how much she wove into the plot and affected events so much without even trying to (especially in union x). she should fire pete though (i think she should hire demyx)

I'd like to see them let you play as characters other than sora more often since that was always really neat (he's had a billion games to himself now). I'd love a kairi and aqua game but i can imagine square and disney both clutching their pearls over female protagonists

something i noticed was that playing them when i was older i liked sora much better. when i started the series as a teenager i found him annoying. as an adult i have more sympathy and tolerance for teenaged boys who are Going Through It. growth or something

currently watching: numerous things, but mostly making my way back through c2. with a couple of friends, we're currently watching 911 Lone Star (for the second time, for one of my friends who didn't catch all the episodes), and with another friend we're rewatching Charmed, which I haven't seen since I was like. ten. Watching it back has been a wild ride, let me tell you.

(We are also watching reality tv show Farmer Wants A Wife--the American version--and we put it on initially as a joke, but it was surprisingly good? Honestly the least offensive piece of reality television media I've ever seen? It was a pleasant surprise and we're watching it week to week now after CR on Thursdays)

currently obsessed with: I was given a very pretty, very satisfying mechanical keyboard as condolence gift for the sudden and untimely death of my beloved laptop (may her memory be a blessing), and honestly it's pretty fantastic. I think I'm writing more now just for the joy of clicking the keys.

Excellent news from Grace Petrie's latest mailing list message!

I did watch Butch Ado About Nothing when it streamed on NextUp last year, it was one of my favourite shows I'd seen all year. One of the only three shows all year to make me literally cry (along with Josie Long and Ahir Shah, though actually that number goes up to four if you count Sam Campbell putting tears entirely of laughter in my eyes with a WIP), which of course is what you want from a comedy show. But it also made me laugh a lot, to be honest even more than I was expecting because while she's an incredibly experienced and talented performer, it was technically a debut comedy hour, I wasn't sure how strong her pure joke-telling skills would be. It turns out, she can do comedy better than many comedians, and she can write and perform songs and stories that'll make you cry (there are no songs in this comedy show, that's just a separate thing that she can also do). I didn't know before this email that the version I saw was missing some material, so I'm very excited to get to see an expanded version. Though even if she didn't say she'd missed some out the first time, I'd still be excited to see it performed again, just because it was so good that I'd love to see another performance of it.

In other news, her latest album, Build Something Better, has been out for a few weeks now and I'm still obsessed with it. It really love it, it's been a long time since I've gotten really into an album this way. In the way that when it first comes out, you listen to it from start to finish a few times, to get a feel for how it works as a whole (and this one really does work, the track order is clearly intentional and comes full circle from political cynicism to personal depression to personal optimism and then around to political optimism and it's lovely and beautiful), and then slowly get deeper into individual songs, and find something new to love about each one with repeated listens. For the first week or so I just had the first few tracks on repeat, I couldn't stop listening to The Best Country in the World and Meanwhile in Texas, but last week I've started to realize how Start Again might be the real masterpiece of the album, and have been constantly playing Earthwire and Cynicism Free and finding increased beauty and complexity in those the more times I hear them, and just in the last couple of days realized that actually Fixer Upper hits some lyrical highs that I barely noticed the first time around and English Culture has a melody that I can't stop listening to. It's amazing. It's an amazing album and I love having an album that's worth unravelling over weeks like this, it's been a while since I've heard a new one this good. Everyone should get her album. And watch her special when it streams again.

The email also mentions that her album achieved some sales goals, which is cool, I don't really follow the industry side of music but I definitely think if there are charts, it's nice if this is on there.

E S P R - mikitoP mikito has been putting out some of my favorite vocaloid music from day one, but this one was really special!!! i feel like he's really peaked where his acoustic music is concerned. the bass tone, the drums really building the anticipation in the second verse, all of it is so well performed and recorded. also a really crazy use of SynthV, not to be mistaken with vocaloid!!! the voice synth is so mellow and melts perfectly into the music. i'm not always a "more human = better" person when it comes to vocal synths, but in this one, the naturalism of her voice is fitting and really cool. the lyrics are just also my favorite flavor of mikito, kind of fantastical but also really grounded in reality and a little bit bittersweet. my other flavor of mikito is "songs he wrote about his cat that sound weird if you don't know are about a cat" which to my knowledge he's only done twice but it's funny that it happened twice

If you are referring to Fanfic Monster, she is based my inner ogre-ish self whom I've known for many years but my current way of drawing her is inspired by Nobuo-kun, the doodled little boy who asks Gotouge-sensei questions in the Taisho Secrets of Volume 11. She has been called this name ever since my first draft of I&H, which I wrote in ten very obsessive days.

Fanfic Monster is all colors; this makes her appear stark white with black outlines. If you look closely in the shadows, it's a myriad of colors like the skin of a soap bubble.

If you referring to my KnY-sona I developed as a joke while I was having fun with the Shonen Jump character generator (which sadly no longer appears to be live) and the "What Breath Should You Practice" quiz in the first fanbook, then...

I did have one colored version of the Corp member version, although I didn't have a colored pencil with a satisfyingly dark brown for the hair. It was colored very simply for cutting a new joke at my own expense for the Nichirin blade, which was designed in response to that Ask about what my own blade would look like. You can use that as a base, just squint and imagine a more chocolatey shade of brown. As for eyes, greenish-brownish-hazelish? There's a Kakushi in episode 1 of the Swordsmith Village arc who has a pretty and muted shade of green for eyes, I like those. Skin is pale, she is prone to low-blood pressure. Also, thanks to this Ask, my crow has more personality now too. As for the demon version, I don't have a colored version and was going to let that fall more blonde (because who doesn't want to have fun as a blonde once or twice?), but I was very flattered to receive a congratulatory drawing of my demon self from @avocodas. Since then I adopted the headcanon of black hair for her, because who doesn't want to have fun with jet black hair once or twice? But the other it hit me, this is KnY, I can even more fun!! And I've wished I could try deep magenta on my ends and let it fade to a champagne pink, so!!! To get the best of a couple different worlds, my demon self has shiny black hair!! The shiny parts up higher are a deep magenta, and the ends are a champagne pink!

The eyes are two-tone, so... white on the outside, but let's say the same muted shade of green for the centers, but with some magenta fading around the edges of the circle. That won't clash at all, I'm sure.

Outfit? I don't know. She'd probably work in a handful of different colors.

Demon Slayer Version! --Buri/Buriko is very serious. Very, very serious. So serious it's silly. --As a recap, she felt the call to slay demons because it is a noble purpose, and admired Flower Breath. However, she has a forceful and ungraceful style and wound up lopping all the heads off the flowers in her Cultivator's garden. Her kind and patience Cultivator suggested she switch to Wind Breath but gave her a bright and flowery haori anyway. Buri/Buriko lives in shame for having failed Flower Breath so badly, but her screaming and growling swordsmanship has suited Wind Breath well. --She uses a naginata. This would be a difficult weapon to hide in Taisho, which is why it is designed to be in two parts that quickly screw together, and one part is collapsible. One night while stopped by the Taisho Police and questioned for her weapon, she replied very seriously, "it's for gym class." They said, "you don't look like a high school girl." She replied, "I'm the teacher." "The... English teacher?" "The gym teacher." They gave up and let her go. --Buri tends to work alone, being so serious hasn't given her many friendships among the Corp because she doesn't relax around anyone. She doesn't deserve to show her face around Flower Breath users, after all. (No one cares. She's admired from a far for seeming demure but then people are shocked to see how wrathful her Wind Breath is. She has no calm in a fight, that's all.) --This lack of calm is her downfall. Although it's not usually the case that demon blood accidentally getting into a wound would cause a human to turn into a demon, but this happened this time. In her haste, she didn't put her naginata together property and the staff broke off, putting her in a close-range fight. She was injured to the point of probably dying anyway but she defeated the demon, and it fell on top of her, splat. Muzan, somewhere miles away, was vaguely aware and thought, "did I just make another Breath user into a demon? Eh, whatever," and then he promptly forgot about her.

Demon Version! --Demon!Buri/Buriko has no recollection of being human, but she maintains a very strong interest and admiration for the Corp. She's kind of like an obsessive fangirl. --But she's also so silly, it's serious. She ruthlessly makes fun of the Corp too. --She loves eating Corp members, they're her favorite. The more amazing their hard work, the more she just wants to eat them up! --When she's hungry she draws silly pictures poking fun at the Corp as bait. It's so cute how easily provoked they are! --However, this stems from her own perfection goals and ideals for the swordsman she wanted to become. If someone says something that hits a little too close to what she's sensitive about that, that's when she gets serious and loses her appetite. --According to the original canon of this self-insert, she dies of fangirling over an encounter with the Flame Pillar.

yeah, their lore might be the most interesting one of all the olympia groups. as you say, antihero-like, and the battle between good and evil, what makes a human good, etc. i kinda link it to hunger games when peeta was brainwashed to hate katniss, but he ends up fighting it back. and aesthetically is cyber since they're machines, sound a little nct sounding, but with 2nd gen vibes. the tlc scrub video is definitely in the vision !!

Hello! Can I ask for your thoughts on Peggy Carter, if you have any. She’s been quite the discussion on my for you page lol, personally I think she’s fine not my favorite she’s just kinda there haha. Though I don’t like the inspiration of her character design it’s pretty gross:(

okay, last time I expressed a positive opinion of Peggy, I got some very upsetting comments so let's all just be cool and I'm going to try to articulate my thoughts as best I can. Y'all shouldn't trust my opinion on anything and always correct me when I'm wrong

So there's a claim that Peggy in the mcu is based on a nazi character from the comics and I've seen very little evidence to back up that claim other than they're both wearing military uniforms in cars. Idk if the writers of the first avenger have said anything, I would love to know more about this. The mcu has a very bad habit of creating Frankenstein characters like Sylvie who is based on enchantress and lady Loki but really isn't either of them and is just an original creation. I'm not sure if that happened with Peggy, because she is a character in the comics. Like idk her character design is the female military uniform of America from WWII. I feel it is a bad faith argument to say that the character is innately evil because she may be based on a hydra agent from the comics. That's like saying that people can't watch the star wars prequels because Anakin is portrayed in a positive light for some of it but Darth Vader and the first order are based on nazis. Like Peggy isn't a nazi, she kills nazis, I watched agent carter and I really don't think she's evil. Like it's weird that this is just now coming up, were people talking about this when the first avenger came out?

But like without any background knowledge of who Peggy might be based on, idk I like her. She's a powerful confident woman with a bold red lip and she holds her own like I had a massive crush on her when I first watched the movie and then I watched agent carter and she just got hotter!! Agent Carter was the only way to get femslash back in ye olde days of marvel fandom. And holy shit she's amazing in what if!!! Huge lady with a sword <3 <3 <3 Honestly, I think she's great for the one-off episodes and she had her own side series that was good but is finished now and endgame ruined her character by just boiling her down to Steve's love interest. Like Captain Carter isn't going to replace Sam as the new Captain America and it'd be stupid if she showed up in the mainline canon. Like could you imagine if she showed up in multiverse of madness, what would even be the point that'd be ridiculous! She's just a fun girl boss character that I've been in love with since 2011 and I wish the mcu would stop bringing her up, she's had her time to shine
