Kuroo had walked you home like normal, laughing and chatting as always. You had felt successful and triumphant from your considered “wins” of the day. When you both reached your home, you turned to say goodbye, thinking you had gotten away with it.

In that moment, Kuroo had slapped your butt swiftly, catching you completely off guard. You gasped and then laughed, “Oh my god, Tetsu!” now realizing you underestimated his timing. He grinned at you, leaning in to whisper, “Turnabout’s a fair play, babe.” Kissing your cheek and starting the walk back to his own home.

During a break in between classes, you had been chatting with a group of friends. He tried stuttering off excuses before Suna’s teammates reinforced his warning with their presence.

Kenji closed his mouth, realizing he crossed a line he shouldn’t have. His face was turning red from embarrassment and humiliation. “I’m sorry, Y/N,” he said, walking away quickly with his head down. You were grateful for Suna’s intervention, you thanked him with a relieved smile. Suna reassured you that he would always have your back, no matter what.

There is nothing Kuroo loves more than coming home to you after a long day of work. There is something indescribable about the feeling he gets when he walks the final steps from his car to the front door, only to see that the light is on. He won’t come home to a dark emptiness, instead he will be greeted with your cheerful voice from the kitchen, pans and utensils clattering, the sound mixing with whichever melodies you have put on in the background. 

If he’s lucky, you won’t even have heard the door open, and he gets to see you dancing along to the music, singing along to the tunes and swaying your hips, leaning over your furnace slightly to check if everything is processing the way you would like. He’d stand in the doorway for a bit, a smile on his face as he loosens his tie and untucks his shirt. He’ll never be able to describe the feeling he gets when he watches you like that, his heart somersaulting, unable to contain all the love he feels for you. 

He usually coughs or makes some other sound, so he doesn’t startle you by calling out your name from the doorframe. The last thing he wants is for you to get a jumpscare while handling hot items on the stove.

His knees grow weak just a little when you turn around to face him, your face lighting up the minute you spot him. How he wishes he could just capture that fraction of a second and burn it into his brain, an image he never wants to forget or take for granted. 

You turn off the heat as you turn away from the task at hand, walking over to him to give him a kiss. His hand finds its place on your side, where it lingers, the kiss never just a short peck. There’s a reason you turn the stove off before you turn to him.

Those simple words have such a profound meaning for him, because that’s what it is. Here, holding you, that’s where his home is. warning for slight spoilers?? (i mention scenes but i dont say anything about who won or stuff like that lmfao) and also caps lock lmfao

aight. HINATA BEING TERRIFIED THAT KAGEYAMA WAS GONNA STOP SETTING FOR HIM. JUST LIKE HE SAID WHEN THEY FIRST MET. CAUSE HINATA WASN'T BEING NECESSARY TO WIN. AND HINATA TRYING SO HARD AND BEING NOT ONLY FRUSTRATED THAT IT WASN'T ENOUGH, BUT ALSO SCARED THAT IF KAGEYAMA SAW HE WASN'T USEFUL. HE'D LOSE INTEREST IN HIM AND STOP SETTING FOR HIM. nekoma cutting off Hinata's wings not only to stop him from flying, but to make kageyama stop helping him fly.

and kageyama sees that. realizes that hinata isn't being useful to him or the team. AND HE FINDS A WAY TO SET FOR HIM ANYWAY.

he sees Hinata can't get up on his own and everything is telling him to drop him- the most reasonable & rational thing would be to stop setting for him. and y'know what kageyama does? HE TELLS HIM "GO AHEAD, FLY"

HE SETS FOR HIM ANYWAY and finds a way to make him fly even higher. WHICH IS SO DKSBSKSJSJSKS IDEK HOW TO DESCRIBE IT. like not only does that tell hinata that no matter how much people try to stop him, kageyama will help him fly anyway- but it also speaks about kageyama A LOT. cause there wasn't a strategic reason to keep trying to use hinata- in fact, he could've used nekoma's focus on him on their favor and instead set for other players.

BUT NO, he chose to keep setting for hinata. because at that point it wasn't just about winning, for kageyama. yknow how important is that? kageyama, who only ever cared about winning, thought setting for hinata was more important to him than winning.

IF THAT DOESNT SAY A LOT ABOUT HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IDK WHAT WOULD

also??? kenma feeling like shit about doing that to hinata?? EVEN THOUGH HE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA. kenhina bffs they're so adorable wtf.

yeah those r my main thoughts. overall a very good movie, perhaps the pacing could've been a bit more intense/nerve-wrecking for my liking? like i wasnt so "in it" as i was with many matches in the anime. still, i think it had a bit more of a focus on relationships and background stories and character development, specially through flashbacks, symbolism & but impactful quotes, so it's still chefs kiss. very much recommend watching it if u haven't.

nekoma vs nohebi

i cannot believe i had missed out on the nekoma vs nohebi game because i started reading the haikyu!! manga after season 4. this game was so thrilling, especially since both nekoma and nohebi share the same tenacity and strong defense. once again, furudate and his team demonstrated why haikyu!! is such a special manga, that not only makes you root for both teams, but treats all of its characters so humanely. here’s my thoughts on the game <3

teamwork

one of haikyu!!'s greatest lessons is that you can never win alone. from kageyama enabling hinata to “fly even higher,” iwaizumi telling oikawa that there are six of them on the court, atsumu relying on all of his spikers for better support, and kageyama wanting to “go further with this team,” even the most skilled and ambitious characters never fight alone, but bring the best out of their teams just as they are themselves supported by their teammates.

yet in the beginning of the nekoma vs nohebi arc, kuroo tells lev that teamwork is complicated too. each team has its own dynamic, there are players who want to stand out, like tora or lev, and those who give them the capacity to do so. there is no formula to make the whole team come together harmoniously.

haikyu!! masterfully brings out that complexity underlying teamwork and the fact that individuality and collectivity are not mutually exclusive, but enable one another. i used the term “enabling” before when describing hinata and kageyama's partnership, and i think that this is symbolizes haikyu!!'s conception of teamwork. lev and shibayama demonstrated this in chapter 204, while lev had been concentrating on becoming “one yaku” together with shibayama. yet their true strength was only fully unlocked once lev understood that they can never be yaku, the only way to work around the problem is to make most out of shibayama's and his own abilities. each adapts to what makes the other irreplaceable, and by doing so, they give each other the possibility to play their best, enable each other, rather than suppress that uniqueness to fit a predesigned scheme.

volleyball is the perfect expression of this because, materially, “every play is connected” - as lev says, no one can be blamed for a lost point. every position is important to the game and it is only by fulfilling their role to the fullest that each player can keep the game going. with lev baiting the opposite hitter into targeting shibayama, haikyu!! takes teamwork from abstraction to materiality, which lends it even more weight, and strikes a powerful balance between individuality and collectivity, as one cannot be without the other.

and furudate's expressive art style transcribes the characters' states of mind so eloquently. kuroo and lev's thoughtfulness, kuroo's intimate conviction that lev will be okay, then his smile, both content for lev and threatened by his awakening, have us feel the same emotions as the characters. furudate's storytelling and art are inseparable, it embodies the essence of manga as a genre.

passion

foreshadowing kenma's trajectory in the karasuno vs nekoma game is kuguri's budding care for volleyball. as tsukihima or kenma, kuguri is presented as a laid-back character, whose talent doesn't entail a particular love for volleyball. at the beginning of the game, nohebi's coach attempts to fire him up (to no avail), and kuguri remains coolheaded. but as the game progresses, kuguri seems to care a little more, which is why this small gesture of pumping his fist after a good play is so precious. love for volleyball is at the heart of haikyu!!, and i love how differently it is portrayed every time: tsukki blocking ushijima was an insane play that got him hooked on volleyball, playing beach volleyball with hinata in brazil reminded oikawa how fun trying new things is, karasuno overcoming kenma's strategy had him try harder and made the game fun for kenma. kuguri's growing enthusiasm is subtler, but it hits really hard, especially because he seemed so uninterested at first.

and his teammates' reaction, their smiles and furudate's signature lines under their eyes, which signal emotion, show us the cohesion in nohebi's team. although nohebi don't seem particularly likeable at first, as they are not above “dirty” schemes such as deliberately targetting tora or buttering up to the referee, these moments humanize them. it has us rooting for both teams and shows the opponent's dignity, the fact that they too have hopes and believe in their teammates.

my favorite detail about kuguri's arc was when numai comes to comfort him after their loss. the fact that we don't see kuguri until the last panel, where he is pictured crying, gives the scene even more emotional weight. numai's words are especially powerful, because haikyu!! always makes a point of showing that sadness and disappointment are legitimate emotions to feel. instead of telling kuguri to cheer up, numai acknowledges his frustration and confirms that of the entire team. even more than this, numai is “relieved” at the sight of kuguri's frustration because it means that kuguri cares, which is the first step toward trying again.

and of couse, lev also senses his potential and how much he can still grow. those panels are some of my favorites in haikyu!!, the characters' voracity and thirst for more always give me a boost to keep improving too, all while keeping in mind that growth starts with health.

good vs. bad?

what distinguishes nohebi from other teams is that they are not above “dirty” plays. at the same time, even if they use exterior factors such as the referee to their advantage, the story does them justice by highlighting their volleyball technique. it would have been easy to take this game into the classic fair play vs. dirty play direction, but here once again haikyu!! subverts manichaean plotlines by treating the opposing team not as a stepping stone for the protagonists, but as subjects in their own right. even if it is is implied that kuroo and suguru don't get along (i love them), or rather see each other as rivals, kuroo insists on nohebi's impressive volleyball skills. while the team that lost against nohebi kept focusing on their dirty tricks and disregarding nohebi's other strengths, this scene rightfully draws attention to the fact that nohebi also earned their place in the spring tournament through hard work, and at the end of chapter 206 mika also emphasizes all the time spent by suguru in practice.

the way that rival teams, however minor, are always treated with dignity and respect by the storyline is what makes haikyu!! so good. there is a place for everyone's story in haikyu!! and there is room for compassion. every character has walked a different path, which makes their approach to volleyball and their philosophy different, but no point of view is dismissed, all are equally valuable, whether they are about pursuing volleyball or something else. looking at those panels of the winning team celebrating or the losing team crying will wrench your heart in both directions, the strong friendships in haikyu!! will never fail to move me.

ultimately, what prevails is getting attached to both teams over the course of the game - and i now have a new bunch of characters to appreciate and gush about!

Haikyu headcanons: cuddling with them

Characters: oikawa, kuroo, Sugawara and tsukki.

Oikawa

BIG SPOON. He would munch on your cheeks, leaving tons of little kisses. Both of you talking for hours about random shits and telling dumb joke y'all come up with on the spot, doing that for hours. He would tickle the back of your neck with his nose, then snuggle in it like he didn't do anything. Oikawa is one of the sweetest boyfriend, he is pretty clingy and be ready to cuddle him for hours while working. He is shameless tho he will gladly burry his face in your chest. He definitely tangles your hair.

Kuro tetsuro

He would lay on your chest after pratice, snuggling in your boobas or neck. He give me lovebites and hickeys vibes while cuddling, but he would also munch on your cheeks. I feel like the cuddle would go with him sliding his head in between your arms while your playing on your phone. You would rest your hand on his back while playing, not minding his affection but he would always leave unexpected kisses over your whole face at really random times. These alway tickle and you end up bursting out laughing, that was a melodious sound to the ears of kuroo.

Sugawara

Cuddles with sugawara are pretty chill, you two would tangle your legs together while he press tenderly your head on his chest or neck. He would gently massage the back of your scalp, you could fall asleep, new talent of sugawara discovered; massages. But sometimes when you guys are cuddling while on a chair, so basically when he studying you would be comfortably installed on his lap. Your arms wrapped around his shoulder, head buried in his neck while humming his scent. Most of your cuddling session were either a complete comfortable silence, or it was you rambling about your days and pouting over small things. But when you were fast asleep on his lap, he would never dare wake you up, he would only enjoy the cute little thing on his lap and sometime slightly rock you. Sweetest boy peace out my heart 🥰

Tsukishima kei

It would be you begging him until he gives in. But when he cuddling with you, he's legit more implicated than you are. You would be comfortable on his chest, your hand behind his head, messaging his scalp lightly while he would massage your back. He was so good at it you could fall asleep, it was amazing. Tsukki would probably scroll on his phone while massaging your back with one hand. It was alway in a comfortable silence or you were talking about your day in a low and sleepy voice. He sometimes told you about his, his voice was alway calm and posed. He almost never looked at you, little did you know when you would fall asleep he would just stare at your cute face and occasionally leave forehead kisses. Once he dropped his phone on your face, you lifted your face and your face was just adorable, eyes barely adorable with a very sleepy expression. He swore a cupid just aimed an arrow straight to his heart. Being the tsundere he is he would never tell you that.

I finally watched the Dumpster Battle and I have so many feelings but Osamu really summed it up.

Beyond the joy of watching an amazing Haikyu match after so long (sooo long 😩), I couldn't help but feel a strong yearning for more after the movie ended. Hq always makes me feel hungry... So it makes sense in a way that I ended up wanting more. But this time, it's different. It's intentional.

Kenma as a protagonist was an interesting choice made by the creators and I have mixed feelings about it. For one, I adore Kenma and I enjoyed seeing his backstory, his friendship with Kuroo, his strategy and feelings about Hinata, everything that gave an insight on him was fascinating to watch. I especially liked his pov shot and his pain of caging Shoyou, of feeling miserable at the inevitable end of everything he enjoys. I think that resonated the most with me. I feel the same about Haikyu ending slowly. (It has ended but you get it, right?)

On the other hand, it felt really limiting. The pacing of the movie was too fast, everything happened at 2x speed, there was no time to process the match at all. It's a bit ironic since in the last match with Inarizaki, that's literally the cause of their downfall.

Was it fast because that's how Kenma experienced it? Or was it because 1 hour 25 minutes was not enough to show everything? [It's not enough ik. This movie could easily have been a season with at least 10 episodes. :(( But I'm grateful for the movie, nonetheless.<3]

We don't see much character interaction, Karasuno's strategy, the coaches and how the players are feeling, what they're thinking, audience or really much of anyone tbh. As someone who especially enjoys these low moments in Haikyu, the ones that makes it distinct from other sports anime, I felt that the movie underdelivered in that camaraderie.

In art, it's often said to keep the specular light to minimal. That's the only way for it to be noticeable. Like in studio ghibli movies, the deliberate slowness makes the action that much more impactful. The light stands out!

The entire match was fantastic to the point that everything blended together and nothing stood out too much. I felt a strange dissonance throughout the movie, hoping for a big moment as is typical of hq matches, and not finding any.

Again, is that because Kenma didn't focus on that or is it the pacing and the time restraint?

There were so many things that I loved about it though. Animation, camera angles, OST, voice acting, and sound effects really made it seem like you were playing with the characters. It's a big shift from the almost omniscient perspective we get of looking in to the match and into the player interactions and mindset. It was exciting for sure, I couldn't take my eyes off the screen (literally because you'd miss something if you do... It's that fast). Hinata's frustration and pain, his silence, reflection and conclusion, and Kageyama stepping up to open up a path for him... I just wanted to give them a hug.

With Kenma and Hinata so lost in the moment and not realising the match ending, it came as a surprise to the viewer too when it did. I think it was genius, we ended up feeling exactly how they did. But it also felt anticlimactic. Which again is what they intended.

The match was great, a small mouthful of the characters and their friendship. I feel hungrier now...

"hm? what is it handsome..." you utter softly, noticing his gentle tone. you feel a warm presence beside you. wrapped around your arm, was oikawa looking back at what seemed to be another group of fangirls. you giggle, and take your goodbye's with the friend you were talking to. oikawa had just finished another game, and you'd usually wait for him to have his little small talk with his fangirls. you didn't really have a problem with it, you could trust him enough. he likes to think you know him better than he does, because you always know or can easily provide what he needs most at times! he really appreciates your trust but oftens questions if he's really doing the right thing. what if him talking to his fangirls made you think you weren't showing enough love to him? and that he valued his fangirls over you? or volleyball? or that girl that dumped him back in highschool because he was too absorbed in volleyb- "bae. are you good??" you raise an eyebrow with a smirk. "keiji." "yes, love?" "you are very silly." you whisper and lightly giggle, moving your bishop to gently kill your fiancé's king, winning the game. an unconscious, pearly smile plays onto your lips (only he could see, despite the numerous times he's reassured her that it's quite charming).

⤷ his thumb gently rubs your knuckle as you walk down the bustling late night city street, lights of restaurants and streetlamps illuminate all of his features. the bridge of his nose, the dark gunmetal green of his eyes, and the apple of his cheekbones. every single feature that shaped the beautiful boy who had put the ring on your finger. tying your laces, putting your jewellery on, and keeping up with the infamous sidewalk rule. little habits he's built since high school, not because he is expected to do so, but because it all comes naturally when it comes to you.

till suddenly, you feel a squeeze on your warm hand, signalling the usual. the switch of places on the concrete. you instinctually react, akaashi discreetly walking on the side near the moving cars. the little things that aren't so little for you, but the little sparks that keep the warmness in your heart kindled.

atsumu miya ; boyfriend (with social house) - ariana grande, social house

always steals your flippin' last bite. it's so annoying, he knows it, and likes it. while you're not looking, he WILL the last bite of your food or a sip of your favourite drink.

⤷ after a long day at work for you, and a long day of training for atsumu, you both comfortably sit in silence at onigiri miya. the faint noises of clutter and cleaning fill the silence, along with boyfriend by ariana grande and social house, playing over the speaker softly. onigiri miya's open sign had just turned around, and the warm light of the hanging sign outside flickers off. osamu effortlessly places the tray of warm onigiri in front of you two, and a shared smile laces upon your faces.

"thank you!!" you and atsumu chirp in unison, osamu acknowledges your gratitude, and discreetly smiles to himself as he prepares to clean up the kitchen. you both each take one onigiri, automatically knowing who prefers which type of onigiri (atsumu's is the cold tuna, yours can be what you prefer ♡ mine is tuna as well hehe). digging in, suddenly there was only one bite of yours left. mouth still full, you suddenly can't remember if you kept the receipt of your failed custom mug you had purchased the other day. it makes you wonder, then your curiosity takes over you before you could take the last bite of your onigiri! you glace and search into your bag, hand still holding a chunk of onigiri. you sigh of relief, noticing you had kept your receipt! but... something is missing.

"oKAYOKAYOKAY!!! i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry pf-" he says as he is STILL having his giggle fit. obviously, the correct reaction is to look away and cross your arms. you do exactly that, and he realises what he's done (caused the next war). he suddenly gets a little touchier, and says "dear y/n-ieee... i promise to give you the first bite of the next food we eat, m'kayyy? from the pure, and innocent kindness of my heart!" he chimes. interrupted by a genuine, heartfelt shout of,

"oh shut yer' trap!"
