hc that kageyama is such a fucking sucker for hugs. like he's probably kinda touch starved and secretly enjoys physical affection in general, but specifically hugs.
like. suga just gives all the boys soft, affectionate, casual hugs every now and then and kageyama goes WEAK for it. he just absolutely melts on the spot.
and nishinoya probably jump-hugs people and kinda hangs from them whenever he's excited?? and the first time he did it with kageyama everyone was kinda like hey dude,,,, maybe thats not the brightest idea,,,,,, perhaps,,,,,
but then just as he's about to let go, kageyama also wraps his arms around him and noya absolutely takes that as an invitation to continue doing it whenever he's excited. not knowing it does things to kageyama's heart that he would never admit out loud.
karazuno boys friendly & lovingly hugging each other >>>>
(edit: i'm making this a fic if u wanna check it out lmaoo)

no but asahi would 100% be that sweet guy who's always loved by grandmas. like he'd definitely make small talk w them and be SO nice and polite and he'd get free homemade food all the time.
(obviously some grandmas would try to set their grandchildren up with the nice & handsome sweetheart they met the other day, but that's not the point. asahi's just thrilled to have some nice calm chats and free cookies so it's a win-win)

smth i noticed in a few scenes is that, when seemingly "cold" characters recieve physical affection, they have very different reactions. although sometimes it might not be quite as noticeable
Tumblr media
like in this scene. they're both clearly kinda uncomfortable/tense with noya petting their heads, but their faces still reflect their own personalities.
tsukkishima just looks slightly annoyed, specially since he was trying to drink water when noya came up. clearly, he doesn't think much of it- its just simply a bit annoying.
meanwhile kageyama looks more surprised than bothered(?? he still doesn't seem to be too happy with the situation either, but it seems like he's also kinda confused. like it seems it's more unexpected for him than for tsukki.
there's also other scenes where i thought abt this but tbh i just wanted to make a quick post abt this one bc i saw this gif of it and i love these volleyball dumbasses sm dksbdjdjdjd thanks for reading my overanalyzing rant lmao
(also yamaguchi & hinata having very different reactions bc they know each of their respective friends would react/feel differently, but thats for another post lmao)

hinata would ABSOLUTELY try to convince ukai & takeda to let him stay with the nekoma team after training camps. he'd be like a kid asking his parents to have a sleepover. he'd tug at their sleeves and insist that "his parents don't mind!" and "he can sleep at kenma's and take the train back the next day!"
they would obviously always say no, but he'd still try every single time. a few times he probably managed to hide between them as they left and got himself like. an extra half hour of chatting with kenma before ukai found him and scolded the shit out of him.

Tobio Kageyama's thing with hugs
Tumblr media
Part one: Winning euphoria (Nishinoya & Kageyama)
summary: Kageyama has a thing with hugs. Sure, he's touch starved enough to appreciate any form of physical affection- but there's something about hugs that does things to his chest. Things he'd never say out loud. Things that, eventually, he says anyway.
(aka. kageyama has a thing for hugs. he & the other karazuno boys realize this, after a few particular situations where each of the members hugs kageyama for the first time. based on this post)
Warnings: cussing
Okay, so in hindsight, Nishinoya realizes that perhaps jumping onto Kageyama and hugging him out of nowhere was not the brightest thing to do.
And he probably knew that much even before doing it, but he just... didn't really think, to be honest. His chest was rumbling with the excitement of having won their first match of the tournament, and his hands tightened into fists as he celebrated, shouting at the top of his lungs. He could very strongly feel the burn of his stomach, having quickly dived to save the ball before their last point, but he loved it. And so he did what he always does whenever he's excited; he jump-hugged one of their teammates.
Why Kageyama, you may ask? Why not Tanaka, who was just screaming just as loudly as him at the excitement winning? or Hinata, who was also very loud when it came to celebrating, and who was certainly very open to physical affection? Even Suga, who was also loudly cherring for them over at the bench, and who was always happy to comply whenever any of the team members wanted a hug?
Well. Perhaps Noya's first excuse would be to say that Kageyama was the closest to him at the moment. But he knew very well that, with his quickness to get from one side of the court to the other, that fact wouldn't have kept him from running over to any of the other members to hug them- as he usually did, really. He doesn't quite know what got to him then- all he knows is in that moment, feeling the raging euphoria of winning and remembering this is why he fucking loves volleyball, the person that came to his mind was Kageyama.
Kageyama, who was oh so reserved, and put on such an stupid fake act of being mean and quiet and being annoyed by his teammates. Kageyama, who worked himself to fucking shambles, who would give anything for his teammates without a second of doubt. Kageyama, genius player Kageyama, who was probably superior to any of them in terms of ability- and yet.... Kageyama, who was maybe the one who worked the hardest out of all of them to get better. To win.
Kageyama, who had taken the ball Nishinoya had barely managed to get up, and somehow turned it into the textbook definition of a perfect set for Hinata to strike, winning them the matchpoint, and allowing them to play the next game tomorrow.
So. Why Kageyama? Nishinoya couldn't really answer, if someone asked. But there was something in his heart that yelled at him to hug that stupid boy the second they won, and he always listened to his heart.
So, he went for it.
He barely registered making his way up to the setter. He jumped without even thinking about it, and his arms wrapped tightly around the other boy's neck, squeezing him and putting his whole bodyweight onto him as he hung there for a bit. A loud laugh erupted from his chest at the pure happiness of winning. His eyes had probably gotten teary as well, but he didn't bother hiding it- the sweat dripping from his face would conceal it well enough. And, honestly, he honestly just couldn't give less of a shit about it, in that moment.
All he was thinking about was how happy he was, and how, if he was really honest with himself, his happiness was partially thanks to Kageyama.
So, he just hugged him tightly. Even as the others stared at them, dumbfounded. Even as Kageyama himself looked at him in utter shock, eyes widening and hands rising up instinctively, but stopping right before doing anything- before pushing away.
It took him a few seconds to snap out of his excitement to get back on his feet and look up at the setter, a smile still on his face and arms still wrapped around him as he was hit by the realization of what he was doing.
He froze.
He wasn't sure if he imagined it, but he thinks he might've seen Kageyamas eyes tear up as well.
Right before he could let go and blurt out a nervous apologize, or some sort of joke to brush off his sudden show of affection, the libero felt a pair of warm, strong arms wrapping around him, ever so gently. He almost thought he could feel the other's hands shake slightly for a second. He seemed unsure- almost careful. Like Nishinoya would suddenly slip away if he hugged him just slightly too tight.
The look Kageyama gave him was mostly unreadable. There was something deep within his eyes. Something like fear, or like fondness. The setter dared to give him a small, shy smile. They looked at each other for what must've been barely a few seconds, but Nishinoya felt like they stared into each other for minutes- like he could suddenly see into Kageyama's mind. Or perhaps it was his heart.
Whatever it was, the reality was it only lasted a second, before he burst out laughing in a mix of happiness, excitement and surprise. He hugged Kageyama even tighter and the setter let out a small gasp as Noya pressed his face against his chest. He could feel Kageyama's heart beating loudly, and it almost matched the loudness of his own heartbeat.
And just like that, Nishinoya gave Kageyama the first hug he'd ever recieved from any of his teammates.
Not the last one, though. That was for sure.
idk how many chapters i'll make of this lol. might just make one for each karazuno boy. might make more/less. idk. tbh i dont have any plans, im just happy i got over my writer's block and finished this first chapter after like. two years of not writting. LMFAO

Tobio Kageyama's thing with hugs
Tumblr media
Part two: Take care of yourself (Sugawara & Kageyama)
Kageyama has a thing with hugs.
Warnings: none! kageyama mentions feeling a bit insecure, but it's all very soft aside from that!
Practice had been pretty chill, that day. After a sudden spur of relentless improvement in each of the players' new moves, due to their even more exhaustive training, it was a bit weird to have a practice day when things just felt... normal.
Now, Sugawara was just as excited as everyone else for the preliminar matches, and just as motivated to get better- if not more. There was still that little sting of insecurity inside his chest, knowing most of the first years were titular players now, while he was stuck at the bench. Then again, he tried to push himself to use that as motivation to keep practicing, to keep improving, and to make the most out of whatever time he got to play at any matches.
It was nice, however, to have a more relaxed practice sometimes. He knows better than anyone how easy it is for his teammates (and him, too, sometimes) to get caught up in the deep desire to keep getting better, to keep winning- so much that they'd forget that practicing moves they were already good at was also part of training, and that taking care of themselves was also crucial if they wanted to do their best at every match.
Not everyone was as content as him with the unusually calm practice, though. At least Kageyama didn't seem to be.
They had both been setting for the strikers to practice their regular attacks, for a bit over 10 minutes now. Suga felt nice- everyone had a relaxed smile on their faces, and most of the players seemed happy enough with each of their strikes. They took their time between each attack, which meant they didn't get quite as tired as they did some other days. He felt good seeing the smile on Azumane's face, specially. He felt good knowing he could get that smile on his face with his sets, even if they weren't as perfect as Kageyama's.
At some point, out of habit, Suga glanced at the other setter. His dark brows were scrunched together in a frown that was just a bit deeper than his usual serious resting face, eyes focused on the ball as he continued setting- yet he didn't seem like he was actually looking at it. His lips were tightly pressed together. He kept tapping his foot on the floor in an anxious manner, whenever he was waiting for another player to set for. His restless thoughts were so loud and fast, Suga could almost feel them.
— Hey, Kageyama! — he exclaimed, as he continued to set for the other players — why the frown?
The black haired boy had briefly glared at him, his frown deepening as he pressed his lips tightly together. Suga gave him a nervous smile.
— Nothing. Focus on practicing.
Ouch.
He'd never been the best at aproaching Kageyama- none of them were, really. The boy was closed off and painfully reserved, yet the playful tone he had whenever he scolded someone, his teasing and sarcastic jokes let Suga know he was probably desperate to get closer to them. Desperate to let someone in- to trust them. Perhaps he just didn't know how to go about it-
Perhaps he didn't know how to trust, at all.
Practice went by smoothly, despite the younger setter's mood being slightly off. Ukai dismissed them with a small smile on his face, and made note to mention how proud he was of their recent drastic improvement, as well as remind them to take care of themselves and rest. Sugawara discreetly glanced at Kageyama, and found he still had that slightly uncomfortable look on his face.
The grayhaired boy had caught himself thinking about that quite a few times, naturally. He cared about his team, and about his teammates- not only as players, but as friends and people. That applied to Kageyama as well, even if they weren't quite as close. Which meant he had noticed his anxious attitude that day, and had immediately decided to try and do something about it. He just had to figure out what.
— Alright, it's Suga's turn to close up today — Daichi announced, as soon as the professor and coach had left the gym
Suga nodded, smiling at their team captain. The other players hurried in and out of the changing rooms, seemingly eager to go home for a good night of rest.
Everyone except Hinata and Kageyama, of course.
— I wish I could stay and practice a bit more, too! — Hinata whined and pouted, as he made his way to the door — Family's coming over tonight, though
— Whatever, it's fine, — he thought he almost saw a pout threatening to form in Kageyama's lips as well, as he replied to Hinata— I'm probably not gonna stay too much longer, either
Suga watched the two wave goodbye to each other, while he also said goodbye to the rest of the team.
After that, he made his way to the storage room and gave a quick glance around, to make sure everything seemed to be put away correctly. He locked up the door to the storage room and grabbed his bag from the bench next to the court, where he had left it during practice. He let out a yawn, stretching his arms and rolling his wrists softly while he entered the changing room. It was quiet, as expected.
He splashed water on his face and looked at himself in the mirror for a moment. He looked at his own resting expression- a small, gentle smile on his lips, his eyes as kind as always. He wondered- sure, he knew how to speak to people in a way that helped them feel comfortable, secure. Cared for. He had a hard time when it came to Kageyama, though- the boy didn't seem to appreciate his caring attitude as much as others. It hurted him a bit, to be honest. But he was still determined to figure out a way to help his teammate out- he just had to come up with a different way to approach the situation.
He let out a small sigh, trying not to let the frustration get to him. He ran a hand through his gray hair as he walked towards the lockers, and was surprised by the sight of a black haired boy sitting on the bench, tying his shoes.
— Oh, hey! — he waved and gave him a small smile — Didn't know you were still here
Kageyama was looking down at his own feet, but as soon as the other spoke, his head shot up so quickly he was almost scared he'd get dizzy from the sudden movement.
— Suga— he muttered, eyes wide and mouth slightly open
Sugawara sat down next to him and felt the other boy's eyes follow him. Even he could feel Kageyama's intense and nerve-wrecking stare on him, Suga made sure to keep a soft smile on his face.
— How are you doing? I noticed you were a bit tense at practice today
Kageyama looked back down at his own feet. He had finished tying up his shoes, it seemed. He placed his hands on one of his knees to rest his chin on them and frowned slightly, pressing his lips together. This time, though, his frown was different- he seemed to be contemplating something. Suga stayed silent, and let him take a few seconds to answer.
— Sorry. Didn't mean to be rude earlier — Kageyama's voice was low, eyes still focused on his own shoes.
— It's fine! I get it. I just wanted to make sure you're okay- but I know it can get a bit annoying sometimes
Suga scratched the back of his neck apologetically and redirected his focus to the floor. From the corner of his eyes, he could see the younger boy biting his bottom lip.
— No, it's not annoying — he admitted — I just... I don't know, I was just in a bad mood today. Sorry
— Yeah, I figured so
— I just... — he stressed his bottom lip, and made a pause before continuing — I- I don't know. It just felt wrong to have such a slow practice day. I feel like I'm wasting time
Suga looked up at him again, but Kageyama's eyes remained firm on his own feet. His brows were scrunched together in concentration, and his lips were slightly tilted downwards in a discontented expression. Suga raised a brow, questioning.
— We still practiced a lot though. It's not wasted time
— I know, — Kageyama sighed — I don't mean you guys. I just...
His blue eyes raised up to Suga for a brief moment, for the first time since the conversation had started, but he quickly looked away. His expression softened into something that, Suga guesses, seemed somewhat like sadness.
Kageyama didn't say anything else for a few minutes.
The silence between them wasn't particularly tense, but it felt heavy. Sugawara looked at the lockers, seeing each of them decorated with stickers and other things that, although it might not be obvious at first sight, reflected a bit of each of his teammates' personalities. His own locker had a few stickers- one of them was a flower that Nishinoya had drawn for him. Another one a cup of coffee, with steam coming out of it.
Kageyama's locker door was plain, except for a sticker Hinata had randomly given him one day, of a blue, white and yellow volleyball.
He looked back at the boy sitting infront of him.
At the end of the day, Suga was fairly good at reading his friends- at taking care of them, and knowing what they needed. Even if he didn't always fully understand what was going through their heads, he somehow managed to figure out what they needed to hear.
So why would Kageyama be an exception?
— You know, — he began speaking in a soft voice, almost hesitantly — you need to rest too, just like everyone else
— I know. I sleep well and I take breaks and all that stuff.
— Yeah, but I don't mean just that — Suga turned around slightly, so that he was facing the other setter — You do realize you don't need to be constantly making big improvements, right?
Kageyama frowned.
— What do you mean?
— Like, it's physically impossible for you to unlock a new move every single practice, or to get drastically better every time you play — he gesticulated with his hand, casually — and frankly, you don't need to, either.
Kageyama looked at him, deep blue eyes suddenly so soft, Sugawara couldn't help but feel fondness for the boy.
— You're a great player, and you're really valuable to the team. Relaxing a bit in practice every now and then won't change that.
If he saw Kageyama's eyes water up and his lower lip tremble, well- no one really had to know.
— Thank you.
Suga's lips turned upwards in a warm smile, and he placed a reassuring hand on his teammate's shoulder.
— Of course. We really appreciate you, aight'? Try to relax a bit. You'll be just fine, and we all need to rest a bit right now anyways.
Kageyama nodded and looked at the floor.
Suga was fairly good at reading his friends, at comforting them and knowing what they needed to hear. At taking care of them. And right now, looking at that tall, genius player sitting down infront of him, shoulders heavy and eyes soft in something that looked like insecurity, like racing anxious thoughts inside his head- Sugawara thought Kageyama needed a hug.
He was fairly good at reading his friends. So why would Kageyama be an exception?
He got slightly closer to the boy, his movements thoughtfully slow as he dared to wrap his arms around Kageyama's body. He was careful, as if any sudden movement could scare him away. He felt Kageyama's muscles tense up, but he simply rested his cheek on the younger's head. Everyone knew Kageyama had no trouble pushing anyone away if they got too comfortable in his personal space for his liking, after all. If he didn't like it, he'd certainly push Suga away without doubting it for a second.
Instead, he just melted in his arms.
Suga doesn't think he's ever seen him like that- eyes fluttered shut, a relaxed expression on his face. Kageyama let out a sigh that almost sounded relieved. Like he had been burning for the last few months, and Suga's body had suddenly put down the painful fire the second he pressed it against him in a hug. He dared rub gentle circles on the boy's back, tracing his shoulders and softly petting his hair.
And Kageyama just melted.
He melted, and let himself stay there- enveloped in the warmth of the hug for however long it took before one of them remembered they needed to get home. Suga didn't keep track of time; he didn't need to.
He would've let Kageyama stay like that, content and safe in his arms, for as long as he needed.
AAAAA second chapter!!! im actually kinda surprised/proud of myself for writting another part for this story lol. i've been having trouble finishing anything i start writting, and tbh i hadn't rlly written much for like two years? so when i finished the first part i was like Oh Nice !! but i assumed it would take me a few weeks to write smth else. but yeah, i'm happy i could finish this one too lol. it's a bit longer than expected, but i kinda like it and i hope yall like it too!! stay safe 💜

Haikyu!! dumpster battle ramble akdbsjsbdd
warning for slight spoilers?? (i mention scenes but i dont say anything about who won or stuff like that lmfao) and also caps lock lmfao
aight. HINATA BEING TERRIFIED THAT KAGEYAMA WAS GONNA STOP SETTING FOR HIM. JUST LIKE HE SAID WHEN THEY FIRST MET. CAUSE HINATA WASN'T BEING NECESSARY TO WIN. AND HINATA TRYING SO HARD AND BEING NOT ONLY FRUSTRATED THAT IT WASN'T ENOUGH, BUT ALSO SCARED THAT IF KAGEYAMA SAW HE WASN'T USEFUL. HE'D LOSE INTEREST IN HIM AND STOP SETTING FOR HIM. nekoma cutting off Hinata's wings not only to stop him from flying, but to make kageyama stop helping him fly.
and kageyama sees that. realizes that hinata isn't being useful to him or the team. AND HE FINDS A WAY TO SET FOR HIM ANYWAY.
he sees Hinata can't get up on his own and everything is telling him to drop him- the most reasonable & rational thing would be to stop setting for him. and y'know what kageyama does? HE TELLS HIM "GO AHEAD, FLY"
HE SETS FOR HIM ANYWAY and finds a way to make him fly even higher. WHICH IS SO DKSBSKSJSJSKS IDEK HOW TO DESCRIBE IT. like not only does that tell hinata that no matter how much people try to stop him, kageyama will help him fly anyway- but it also speaks about kageyama A LOT. cause there wasn't a strategic reason to keep trying to use hinata- in fact, he could've used nekoma's focus on him on their favor and instead set for other players.
BUT NO, he chose to keep setting for hinata. because at that point it wasn't just about winning, for kageyama. yknow how important is that? kageyama, who only ever cared about winning, thought setting for hinata was more important to him than winning.
IF THAT DOESNT SAY A LOT ABOUT HIS CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT IDK WHAT WOULD
also??? kenma feeling like shit about doing that to hinata?? EVEN THOUGH HE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA. kenhina bffs they're so adorable wtf.
but then again the "we're just friends scene"??? WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK???? DKSBSJSK it made me feel stuff lmfao such a good way to portray their friendship & rivalry
also!!! kuroo, bokuto & tsukki crumbs!!! i love their friendship sm its so cool that they had their moments in the movie. bokuto was adorable sksnsjsjsj
the animation was also so cool tbh, specially that one scene of hinata and kenma staring at each other. yknow the one.
Tumblr media
this one lmfao
ALSO everyone's talked about the scene where kenma keeps hinata in a birdcage but i still gotta mention it cause ITS SO COOL WTF
and everyone also said it but like. literally a kuroken movie (/p or /r). i loved how they showed that development of kenma's love for volleyball and how hinata felt so proud and happy and accomplished when kenma said their match had been so fun fksbdjdjdjdj HE HAD THE PERFECT REACTION.
also kuroo's laugh??? BEAUTIFUL and also a very good reaction lmfao.
yeah those r my main thoughts. overall a very good movie, perhaps the pacing could've been a bit more intense/nerve-wrecking for my liking? like i wasnt so "in it" as i was with many matches in the anime. still, i think it had a bit more of a focus on relationships and background stories and character development, specially through flashbacks, symbolism & but impactful quotes, so it's still chefs kiss. very much recommend watching it if u haven't.
