Marcus pike does not like horror movies.
Now don't get me wrong. He loves October. He loves halloween. Sitting out on his porch in an affordable (but still high quality) costume with a bowl of candy and remarking on all the very sparkly princesses and scary skeletons that make their way up to his house all night is one of his favorite nights of the whole year. But he doesn't enjoy the gorey side of halloween. He's more than happy to find himself on the couch on a saturday night and watch seasonal film about witches and spells- but nothing with explicit gore that makes him jump and double check the shadow at the end of the hall later that night.
"Real life is terrifying enough in my opinion. I don't need to add to it on my time off."
That is, until he met you.
When you tell him on your first date that you love halloween he all but beams. But the confession is then paired with a shy smile as you admit you enjoy the macarbe just as much as the softer side of the holiday.
"I'm a bit of a horror buff, honestly."
That's when his smile threatens to falter- not because of disgust, god no. But because the next words out of his mouth are "Me too!" despite the fact the man refused to watch a single Saw film because the trailers were enough to turn him off of it.
But the way your eyes lit up at the shared interest was enough to make him lie straight through his teeth and bite down his own concerns when you ask if he'd like to have a movie night together.
Of course- the truth does come out.
When you're thirty minutes through Saw and you see Marcus watching with gritted teeth and a permanent grimace like he'd preparing to get punched in the face, you ask him truthfully if he wants to watch something else.
The poor puppy dog look that takes over his face is enough to make you want to kiss him then and there.

Why did no one tell me that Dracula was a fucking COMEDY.
The book opens up with Jonathan experiencing a paprika overload. Dracula pretends to be the coachman and drives Jonathan around in circles until he decides he's established enough of a dramatic atmosphere. By day three in the castle Jonathan has picked up that there are no servants and Dracula is secretly doing all the chores, including driving him there. The first time Jonathan tries to shave, the count barges into the room, yeets his mirror out the window, refuses to elaborate and leaves. Jonathan also notices that he is a prisoner in the castle but doesn't dare to bring it up, which... is a mood, but also hilarious. A week into his stay he sees his employer/kidnapper crawling facedown out a wall

Hello everyone I am so unbelievably pissed about the NaNoWriMo situation that i'm going to take my massive stack of writing and craft books and my English degree and channel all my rage into making an email newsletter to send craft-oriented writing prompts and tips during the month of November. Say No to NaNoWriMo, but yes to WriMo. You get it.
I'm not going to make this have the same goals as Nanowrimo-- I'm not reskinning it but less ableist, I just really think having a whole month where people focused on their work is pretty cool and I want to keep up that spirit. This is going to be informal and run by Just Me, though I'll make a discord server if it's clear there's interest. Direct questions to @nowrimomo , which I literally just made and so will look like a skeleton currently.
I'm going to include prompts from various professional sources with options for Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Fanfic, so everybody can get in on this. It doesn't matter what you write, but we should all Write More.

one of the greatest tragedies of none of the screen adaptations of Dracula being faithful to the book is that none of them include Arthur’s army of little terriers that he has to pick up and lift over the threshold one by one

If you love vampires, listen up!
Do you enjoy vampires, 80’s music, a healthy dose of homoeroticism - all with a theatrical flair? Well look no further, for I submit to you Dance of the Vampires.
Tumblr media
(More cool pictures at the very bottom)
What is it you may ask? It’s a musical about a vampire who seduces a girl and invites her to his midnight ball - an offer she simply cannot turn down. The whole thing sorta gives Phantom of the Opera vibes, but like, wayyy less creepy (despite it being a literal vampire). I will say now that yes, Tanz der Vampire (the original title of Dance of the Vampires), is in German, but there is a full recording with English subtitles on youtube, so please don’t let that prevent you from watching it. Now if you’re still reading, allow me to elaborate on the 80’s music and homoeroticism that I previously mentioned.
Let’s start with the tragic gay romance, because I’m sure that’s what you want to hear about first. While not a main part of the musical, the main vampire’s son falls in love with - gasp! - the vampire hunter’s apprentice. They dance together, and with stage magic involving a mesh screen and an actor on the other side dressed identically to the apprentice, it appears as though the vampire has no reflection in the “mirror”. Of course, the feeling is not mutual, as the apprentice is only at the castle to rescue the girl, who he is in love with.
Now, onto the 80’s music. Surely you’ve heard of the song Total Eclipse of the Heart, or the singer Meatloaf (even if it was just his role as Eddie in Rocky Horror Picture Show). Well, the man who wrote that song and a majority if not all of Meatloaf’s work, was Jim Steinman, who composed the musical. The soundtrack contains a decent amount of electric guitar, even a bit of synth at parts, and all around just sounds awesome. However, he only had about a month and a half to compose it all, so he reused some stuff he previously wrote, including a couple Meatloaf songs and Total Eclipse of the Heart, a song he originally wrote for a Nosferatu musical that ended up not getting produced. It was actually originally titled “Vampires in Love,” so what better song is there to fill the place of a big love duet between the girl and the Count?
Tanz der Vampire is my favorite musical ever. I’ve loved it ever since Count von Krolock appeared on the screen and first began to sing, and you may love it too. So I implore you. Please do yourself a favor and check it out. I’ll provide a link of a full recording with English subtitles here, but it should also be the first result on youtube when you search “tanz der vampire english subtitles.” (That production also has Drew Sarich as the Count, my personal favorite.) I should add though, do not watch the broadway production because it’s terrible.
If you’re still not sold, I’m not sure what else I could say to convince you, but hopefully you at least found this interesting and learned something new. If you want to know more about Tanz der Vampire or would like to hear about other musicals about vampires, please let me know and I can answer any questions. (If even one person watches it because of this I’ll consider this a success, and if you do watch it please let me know because it would really make my day.)
And now I’ll leave you with some pictures of Tanz der Vampire as a last resort to convince you how awesome it is and that you should watch it. (I also put in the alt text the song each picture is from for anyone interested)

ive been listening to the audiobook on road trips and i just got back from a con this weekend so i hoped to finish it on the drive back
When i tell you. That the finale battle where Quincey died just at the moment of sunset. Where Giancarlo Hererra wrung my heart out like a wet rag with his acting in those few lines he got.
That that scene not only finished at the exact moment that i got home. But that it was also exactly at sunset.
I wasn't just listening to the audiobook yall I was there

So you're implying you're gonna show what Jonathan was doing while Dracula was sailing all July?
Yup. Harker will be a full novel of nothing but Jonathan Harker's side of the Dracula story. Not first person POV, but a semi-limited third person from start to finish (with flints of background in-between). Which includes just what kind of survival/supernatural horrors he got up to after Spider-Manning his ass out of the castle.
As an aside, I am currently at...
Tumblr media
...and we still haven't met the Weird Sisters yet.
I am here to put some goddang meat on my good friend Jonathan Harker's narrative bones after 126+ years of being sidelined and bastardized by every writer and filmmaker to ever bullshit a spinoff out of the book HE opened and closed. If that means giving him a cinderblock's worth of Horrors to chip through (while becoming the Horrors) so be it.

is there an answer within the game somewhere that I haven't gotten to yet? (If so then uh. Please don't spoil me I would like to see for myself)
if not then. Well I guess I see why Vampire isn't in the game yet usually he's right there from the start it feels weird seeing him Not be there for once but. I guess I see why assuming there's gonna be some kind of like. Character in the future or something related to this. Fudging-.

I really like your writing style. Do you have any literature you can share that you use as inspo?
going to start by disclaiming that from a specifically stylistic approach, i don't know if i have any writers that are distinctly similar. i do have writers that i find inspiring, though! if none of these are helpful for style, i hope they can inspire you in the same way that they make me aspire to achieve fantastic things with my writing :) i am always a poet first and foremost, whether it's poetry or prose (which is often just poetry hiding in a longer form), so most of my recommendations are poems; i have a few books at the end, though, just in case. everything that i link here should be free to access!
i am like 90% sure that anyone seeing this will already know that i keep all my poetry over at @trickstersaint, but just in case you're coming direct from a quiz, that's the place to read more of my writing! now. onto my list of a bunch of other trans poets with tumblr platforms 🖤
keaton st. james (@boykeats), i think, was the first modern poet that i really found and loved. stumbling across some of his dictionary poems as a younger poet was so revolutionary to me, and reading his poetry changed the way that i thought about and approached poetry as a whole. inspiration in the way of seeing the things that someone can do with poetry. opening up all the limits. this is what every good poem will do for you a little bit, i think, but keaton st. james is always my first recommendation for a modern poet. highly recommend his collections growth and light (i personally really love light. guy who is normal about religion voice) and rural boys watch the apocalypse is to me what that one richard siken poem about being in a car with a beautiful boy is to everyone else haha
other poets whose work i really enjoy and admire include silas denver melvin (@sweatermuppet) and dante émile (@orpheuslament)! recommending the poems an impractical marvel and dioscuri from them, respectively. sweatermuppet also has a full collection called grit, and orpheuslament has one called misplaced organs and various saints (this particular one isn't free but linking it here!) :)
my favorite poem since high school has been gravity by maura o'connor. life-changing. that poem is just like me for real.
for more of a narrative style, if you've read + liked my piece aromanticism, i definitely recommend with those we love alive by porpentine! really gorgeous twine piece with a kind of mysticism to it that could definitely tie back into the kind of stuff you'd see in my little quizzes too :)
if you're looking for actual literature-as-in-books, i can point you towards our wives under the sea by julia armfield and white is for witching by helen oyeyemi. both are novels that i've enjoyed for their kind of eclectic and poetic writing recently! i will also take any chance to recommend my favorite book, which is the hours by michael cunningham; regardless of similarity or inspiration, i find the writing of this book gorgeous and heartbreaking and i think it scrapes at the human condition in a way that draws blood. gently. if you know what i mean.
i hope this was helpful! i constantly feel as if i don't read enough poetry so if anyone has any suggestions they want to give me. i am more than happy to hear them <3 happy reading everybody!
