parts of live action ATLA that I can think of right now and thought were particularly well done include:

- opening scene with the earthbender (he fought hard and died brutally, it sets the tone well for this world at war)

- the air nomad genocide (it feels so different when we have to see it for ourselves, jeez louise)

- Kyoshi fighting through Aang (metal as hell)

- the cave of two lovers (gay Oma and Shu!! red and blue Oma and Shu!! hell yeah!! I also just like how they had Sokka and Katara in there instead, and their familial love got them out)

- that earth kingdom soldier talking to Iroh (more nuanced than just "corrupt soldier punch old man", also "he was only 19" got to me, great acting bro)

- Zuko talking to Iroh at Lu Ten's funeral (Zuko saying what he's supposed to but then instead of leaving he shares a memory of his cousin and just sits with his devastated, unresponsive uncle so he isn't alone, oh my god I cried)

- Seeing Zuko's father tell him he's banished (he looks so young and scared and he echos what his mother must've taught him about the weak being capable of growing stronger)

- Zuko's crew being the 41st division (I love that it ties the crew directly to the action that upset Ozai and led to Zuko's banishment, plus it gives the crew a pretty damn good reason to respect him despite him being a bratty asshole sometimes)

thing about deltora quest that only occurred to me in hindsight is not only just how much jasmine carries the entire party on this quest but also how genre-defyingly brutal she is lol. like, this is a kid's series that hinges on riddles and puzzles far more heavily than combat - even when deaths occur, they're often the result of cleverness in some way rather than straight up combat ability. that said, let's look at the villain kill count at the end of book five of eight of the first series:

- lief: 1 - even there it's with a well-thrown bottle of cursed water rather than his sword.

- barda: 0 - i'm not counting that one unnamed sand beast, that's an animal not a villain.

- filli: 0 - he is a squirrel, this is unsurprising.

- kree: 1 - killed an invincible sorceress all by himself, good bird best friend.

- jasmine: 5 - dropped a tree branch on a mf, drowned two cannibals in quicksand, cut a giant snake's throat, shoved a dude down a pipe full of toxic mold (after having to be told not to cut his throat while he slept jfc).

idk it just suddenly struck me as really funny how this one character who isn't the protagonist is almost from a different, far more brutal story, and uses that fact to consistently be the mvp and save everyone else's asses. i need to read this series again it's been too long.

Thinking about the "you are my captain luffy, and im your first mate" line and uhh, remember when luffy first asked zoro to become a part of his crew? while untying the ropes, zoro said to luffy something along the line "you can untie me, but i'm still not gonna be part of your crew", and he was all like "i mean it!", and then later luffy also asked nami to join his crew, but of course she rejected him too.

Anyway, later (after teaming up with nami first then zoro second) luffy told morgan that they are a crew (just luffy being luffy), but zoro and nami of course refuted his statement. Not just once though, after defeating morgan and the other marines, nami and zoro pulled out the "not a crew" statement simultaneously after the "im sensing a little bit of tension amongst the crew" line from luffy.

So like i cant help but think about how zoro and nami technically kinda joined at the same time? And not just that, but nami's actually the first person that luffy teamed up with! And this got me thinking, zoro what makes you think that you are luffy's first mate? I get if animanga zoro wanted to call himself luffy's first mate, but opla zoro? Like anyway all im trying to say is that opla zoro is a self proclaimed first mate, i said what i said.

Also i'd like to add something from what i've read somewhere about first mate and:

"First mate is the vice captain and is not necessarily the first person to join. A first mate is appointed after a sizeable crew is formed and the captain picks the most suitable person to lead his crew in his absence."

AND REMEMBER THE "you just got here you don't know what luffy needs" line from zoro??? luffy said that he needed zoro. Zoro heard what he said. This man is just ready to commit for life. He picked himself as the first mate like a champ, as he should.

EDIT: after rewatching opla i just realised that nami used the first mate phrase not only once but twice (when talking to/abt zoro). But i still think that zoro is a self proclaimed first mate, cuz first mate should've been chosen by the captain and they (luffy & zoro) never really talked about it so i stand by what i said:D

Watching Yusuke go through incredible amounts of pain during the fight with the wasted Australian was awesome. I love cheering on two dudes while they duke it out like men an shit. Blow for blow, feet bleedin like crazy while digging into knives, concussion inducing headbutts. That's good content.

Sanji… is being… weird.

I didn’t address this but he was VERY happy to see Luffy again after what was only a day, maybe two of separation after Luffy got washed ashore. He was like running towards Luffy like it was the Zoro-Luffy reunion with his arms wide open but gets cut off by Chopper and Carrot.

Like I can see from a “Luffy and the crew have been reasserted as my number one priority and imma prove how ride or die I am” perspective why Sanji may have acted that way.

And just now, Law apologised to Kin’emon about him, Luffy and Zoro’s identities getting discovered and Sanji immediately got pissed and went to blame Law.

But like, Chopper and Nami immediately were like “oh it was deffo Luffy’s fault”

And then Sanji was like “oh Nami-san is apologising for Luffy’s actions? Did I overreact?” And also apologised for Luffy in a “huh oh yeah our Captain is like that how did I forget but also I’m kinda reluctant to apologise to this guy” kind of way. But he has no other beef with Law that I recall so why is he sparking up like Law is Zoro?

THIS IS VERY ZOSAN CODED. That’s what it is. Sanji is acting like Zoro is Law and it seems so out of pocket. I don’t think they’re close enough to have this kind of combative exchange?

I’m also including the desperate attempt to “recover” Okiku’s attention from Kin’emon (despite never having it in the first place???) as excessive Sanji vibes.
