Is Heather Based on a Book Character? (HTTYD)
Tumblr media
Hello, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Today, we'll be talking about another character from the movie/TV franchise and the Books:
Could Heather be loosely based on a character from the books?
(Warning: Spoiler Alert to those who haven't read the books at all, but consider this an opportunity to see if the books are worth reading, eh? ;-) )
Now, I might be 100% wrong on my theory, but I'm still going to present it, and leave to you, my audience, to determine whether or not this is plausible.
Unlike other characters in the movie/t.v. show whom many fans think are similar to certain book characters (cough, cough, Astrid, cough), Heather might possibly have more in common with her other half, Barbara the Barbarian: a minor character that we see only in the last book of the series, How to Fight a Dragon's Fury.
<><><><><><><><><><><>
My Theory | How Heather and Barbara Are Similar:
What makes me think that Heather and Barbara are connected, if somewhat loosely?
Well, let me give you a few reasons:
1) She's a daughter of a Chieftain.
Both girls are daughters (or Princesses, as they're called in the books) of Chieftains — albeit Heather's the daughter of the late Chieftain of the Berserker Tribe, while Barbara is the daughter of the Chieftain of the Barbarian Tribe. They both have a level head on their shoulders and their equipment and even their dragons look somewhat similar, if loosely so.
They are also good leaders who lead their warriors well, and both of their fathers dote on them.
Both are superb fighters, being daughters of Chieftains. They are also intelligent, fierce, brave, kind, compassionate, and love their dragons dearly.
Tumblr media
2) Both seem to be brunettes (though Barbara's hair and eye color is never mentioned).
3) Barbara, like Heather, seems to not have a mother, though it's unclear whether the mother died or if she was just not mentioned. The HTTYD books only have a few mothers who are mentioned and shown: Bertha (Camicazi's mother), Valhallarama (Hiccup's mother), Termagant (Fishlegs' mother), Excellinor the Witch (Alvin the Treacherous's mother), and Chin-hilda (Hiccup the Second's mother). Oddly, women are sorely lacking in the books. Maybe it's just because of the Viking culture in her books. In Viking culture, women weren't often mentioned except in folklore and sagas.
4) Both are staunch supporters and allies of their respective Hiccup the Thirds. Heather is a trustworthy ally who's often shown alongside Hiccup and the Dragon Riders in Race to the Edge along with Dagur.
She's always seen with the others around the Hearth giving suggestions and advice. Before she reconciled with Dagur, and when she lived with the Dragon Riders, she often flew with Hiccup and/or Astrid, and was usually the one to go with Hiccup and Astrid when he left to talk to someone — whether a villain or one of their allies.
She and Barbara have the utmost respect for their respective Hiccups and would gladly die for them if need be.
Barbara only nominated Alvin the Treacherous to be King of the Wilderwest, despite knowing the kind of person he was and having fought against him, and being Hiccup's follower, out of practical sense and battle fatigue, for the Vikings of the Wilderwest were close to extinction under the claws of the Dragons' Red-Rage Rebellion led by Furious, and she and everyone else had been fighting the dragons for two years at this point and were war-weary (even Vikings need a break from war once and a while). Only when evidence began to pop up that Hiccup is the Rightful Heir did she have hope again.
She was also one of the Vikings who knelt before Hiccup to swear their swords for his service as their King. And when Hiccup was going to duel Furious, Barbara offered to lend him her cat to take into battle — whether as a weapon, a lucky charm, or both.
And when Hiccup was in danger — and when Alvin incited the battle once again by breaking the Rules of Single Combat by entering the Ring when Hiccup and Furious were engaged so that he could steal the Dragon Jewel and kill Hiccup the Third for good — she flew on her dragon along with her comrades to enter the fray and showed great courage and bravery.
5) Both Heather and Barbara own battle horns.
Tumblr media
Heather was given her horn as a gift from Hiccup's father Stoick when she was born. Perhaps Barbara did likewise, or her own father had given her it when she was older. As I've said, she's a minor character so not much is known about her at all; she's only shown in one book — the last one, and only in the middle of the last one.
Heather uses her own to call Windshear to her if they ever get separated. It's also possible that she uses it to call to any allies that are close to her. Barbara seems to use her horn similarly.
In fact, in How to Fight a Dragon's Fury, it says in Page 241 that: "...She brought out her foghorn and blew on it several times, making such a loud noise that the cat's fur stood up like the quills on a sea urchin and she immediately bounced back onto Barbara's shoulder."
So she seems to use it for her pet cat (I believe it was mentioned that the Barbarian Tribe used cats into battle. No clue why, but they do).
Another reference in Page 450 — well after this point, close to the end of the story — when the Second Dragon-Human War was ended and the Vikings were celebrating the new peace and the return of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest. Unfortunately, being Vikings, their celebrating eventually moved into fighting and arguing, and Hiccup eventually asks Barbara for her horn in order to break it up.
Hiccup says: " 'In the meantime, I know what will stop them from arguing... Barbara," said Hiccup now, 'could I borrow your foghorn?' King Hiccup stood up on his Stone, and blew the foghorn as hard as he could. The thrilling sound of the foghorn, when blown at full blast, was so magnetically loud that it hit the ears like an electric shock..."
We actually see this when Heather blows her horn to call Windshear to her in Edge of Disaster Part 2 in Season 2 of RTTE. The sound is high-pitched and loud.
Tumblr media
Yet another — and final — reference is in Page 455-456, where, as the Vikings are singing songs during the Feast, Hiccup asks Barbara if she'd like her horn back, to which she replied that "he'd better keep it, as she thought that he was going to need it." (Vikings being Vikings, after all). Heather doesn't do this, but I was basically showing where the horn came from.
Tumblr media
Now, it could be that this is just a coincidence, and that this doesn't make Heather loosely based on Barbara the Barbarian. It could be that the horn is just a little reference from the books like the eyepiece (telescope) you see Hiccup and other characters use throughout the Dragons series.
6) Both girls are love interests of their respective Fishlegs characters.
Tumblr media
That's right. I'm getting to the JUICY stuff now! lol 😎🍿
Now Fishlegs in the movie franchise is vastly (pun not intended) different from Fishlegs in the books. Fishlegs in the books is small and skinny like Hiccup and has asthma, eczema, a squint, a limp, and numerous allergies, including one to reptiles. He wears glasses. And has red hair. And his dragon is a Deadly Shadow, a dragon not unsimilar to the Snaptrapper dragon — much cooler than a Gronkle, as the Deadly Shadow is a faster flyer, deadlier, and is a Stealth Dragon.
Fishlegs in the movies is... beefier than Fishlegs in the books. He also doesn't really have any allergies aside from Gobber's earwax (which they only did for comedy effect and the episode actually referenced Fishlegs' allergy to reptiles in the books, though Fishlegs seems to have gotten over that allergy as the books wore on). He doesn't have glasses, having perfect vision. He doesn't limp, he's strong, and doesn't squint. And he doesn't have asthma. And it seems like he can swim just fine, whereas in the books Fishlegs was a terrible swimmer and was only able to swim when he saw that Hiccup was in danger. He also has blond hair, not red. And he's a nerd when it comes to dragons, whereas Fishlegs in the books is an up-and-coming poet and bard with only the general knowledge of dragons.
Basically, he's a WIMP.
Fishlegs in the books is also an orphan, unlike in the movie, and also, unlike Movie Fishlegs, Fishlegs in the books also turns out to be royalty, being the son of Termagant, daughter of a Murderous Chieftain, and Alvin the Treacherous, making him the third cousin (according to the HTTYD wiki) of Hiccup and Snotlout. In the movie, Alvin is of no relation to Stoick, Hiccup, Snotlout, and Fishlegs at all, and Fishlegs is of no relation, in turn, to Hiccup. In the books, Fishlegs is also part Berserker on his mother's side, whereas Fishlegs has no such lineage.
One last thing: Fishlegs in the books was love-struck whenever Barbara was around, and couldn't form a coherent sentence together nor could think straight, often fainting. Fishlegs in the films and series never show any of that when with Heather. However, Fishlegs's secret letters to Heather could actually be a reference from the books where Fishlegs writes a secret love letter to Barbara the Barbarian against Hiccup's wishes.
In other words, he's a SIMP. 😂
Tumblr media
(Heathlegs by NightOwl374 on Tumblr — though the account isn't around anymore and you can only find these on Pinterest)
Now, there are those who hope that someday Fishlegs and Barbara get together (personally, I don't) like how Fishlegs and Heather do in RTTE.
Another thing that the girls have in common is that both are older than their male counterparts — she is about a year or so (give or take a few months) older than Fishlegs, while Barbara is said, according to Camicazi, to be at least three years older than Fishlegs.
Two noticeable differences are, however, that 1) Fishlegs and Heather were a couple at one point, whereas with Fishlegs and Barbara, it was a one-sided attraction on Fishlegs' part and probably wouldn't be a thing regardless; and 2) both Barbara and Fishlegs were royalty, whereas only Heather is royalty and Fishlegs is just your average Joe (or IS HE? 😏).
But Fishlegs and Heather's relationship could've been a very loose reference to the possibility — and hope — of Fishlegs' infatuation with Barbara the Barbarian in the end of How to Fight a Dragon's Fury (come on, Cressida! Make us a sequel series!), and wanting Fishlegs to at least GET THE GIRL for once! lol 😂
<><><><><><><><><><>
Conclusion:
Anyway, this is all that I have for you concerning this. What do you guys think? Do you think that Heather could be loosely inspired by Barbara from the books? Or do you think that I'm making mountains out of ant-hills and that these are just a bunch of coincidences! Tell me what you guys think! 😏
Thank you everyone for reading this article! I hope you guys enjoyed reading it! Until next time, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Have a great weekend!
Long Live the Wilderwest!

some Httyd (book) au ideas
Bonfire au
Fishlegs gets tired of being treated like trash and sets Berk on fire as revenge
ghosts au
The ghosts of Hiccup 1, Hiccup 2 and Termagant are keeping watch over the adventures and doing whatever they can to help
Golden au
Hiccup decides to claim the treasure of Grimbeard immediately, becoming fabulously wealthy but also more vain, greedy and unempethetic in the process.
Dragonmarksist au
The loss of dragons when the jewel is broken by king Alvin upsets the balance of the ecosystem causing a famine, which allows Hiccup to cause a communist revolution, and install a dictatorship with him at the forefront
Feral au
Hiccup in his outcast days grows more resentful towards humanity, eventually joining with furious to destroy them.
Cult au
After being kicked out of the tribe at only ten, Hiccup has to find a way to survive. Luckily for him, he still has his wits, and using them he is able to get the other viking boys to worship him as a false god.
zombie au
The dragon Jewel is broken, but instead of killing the dragon, it turns them into zombies.
new world au
Hiccup makes it to america and spends some time exploring the geography, learning the languages and studying the native dragons before heading back to a devastating surprise.
possession au
Snotlout is possessed by the ghost of Thugheart.
Valhalla au
Hiccup low-key dies, but is having none of it, so instead he straight up fights god and wins.
happily ever after au
Snotout doesn’t throw the stone and everything works out well without a war. (Wouldn’t that be nice)
reborn au
Hiccup the third is literally the reincarnation soul of the previous two Hiccups
Mob au
Hiccup may not be very strong, but he is good at organization and leadership…organizing and leading a crime ring that is. Remember just because Hiccup is a bit more proper, polite and intelligent than the other Vikings, doesn’t make him any less violent.
interview au
Grimbeard is curst to wander the Tomorrow as a ghost, this is however excellent for Hiccup, as he can get useful information out of him.
rose-red rage au
Due to stress and fear caused by the war, Hiccup slips into a coma, finding himself in a strange, distorted, wonderlandish versions of his reality.
erased  au
Hiccup does not regain his memory after losing it in book 12.
Hurricane au
Hiccup gains the ability to control the weather, so you’d better watch out.
lucid au
Everything Hiccup has ever experienced, has all been part of some long dream, only he is not the one sleeping.
Tall-tale au
In his old age, Hiccup ended up getting a lot of facts about his childhood wrong. The true story ends up looking a lot different.
shapeshifter au
Is he a boy, or is he a dragon? The answer is both. Hiccup can shape shift.
Hobbit au.
Hiccup is enlisted by some dwarves to help deal with a dragon named Smaug.
Last choice au
After the deaths of both Hiccup and Alvin, Fishlegs becomes King (he is a direct descendant of grimbeard after all)
Third choice au
Similar to last choice au, but it is Snotlout who becomes king.
swap au
Alvin really is a poor but honest farmer, Hiccup is a little psychopath, Fishlegs is his stonecold and music hating right hand man, Stoick is mild mannered and shy, Snotlout is a kind hearted pacifist, Old wrinkly and the witch’s roles are basically reversed, Exeter.
star au
Fishlegs tries out being a bard, he ends up being a huge success and becomes a famous celebrity
ballet au
Hiccup’s father told him that he has to pick out a sport, and Hiccup already has something in mind, his father never did specify which sport…
Robbin hood au
“Rob from the rich, give to the poor!” has been the moto of Hiccup and his friends for as long as they can remember.
Outcast au
After being exiled from berk Hiccup finds himself in the island of the outcasts. He ends up being adopted by Alvin, after proving he is willing to do whatever it takes to survive…
Hanahaki au
Camicazi loves Hiccup with all her heart, unfortunately to Hiccup, she will only ever be a friend.
Band au
Fishlegs, Hiccup and Camicazi start a band. That’s it, that’s the au.
Angle au
Hiccup is born with a pair of feathered wings that nobody can explain.
mermaid, faerie, princess au
Hiccup is the princess, Camicazi is the faerie and Fishlegs is the mermaid
Slavic au
Literally the exact same thing as the original story, but instead of being nordic it’s slavic. The (I’m Slavic so don’t blame me for wanting this)
Forlorn
The ghosts of exiled children past are back…for revenge

let me introduce to you my how to train your dragon dead space au
its basically httyd but in the dead space universe, alvin and excellinor are unitologist leaders and the seadragons are spacedragons
idk why but i designed termagant first (fishlegs' mother, for those who are unfamiliar with the httyd books)
she, like most of the other space vikings, wears and uses scrapped together scaf gear.
OH ALSO i'm declaring large/muscular termagant supremacy she's the daughter of a murderous and a berserk and didn't get yeeted into the ocean you can't tell me she's skinny
spoilers and necromorphs under the cut, tread carefully! (necromorphs are a body-horror and gore-fest, for those who are unfamiliar with dead space)
Tumblr media
Rather than dying after childbirth, Termagant runs off with Alvin. Alvin starts seeming a little suspicious to her so eventually she sends off Fishlegs with Arrogance, Innocence and Patience (he's still mostly too young to remember it but he DOES retain a little bit as opposed to canon). Soon after, Alvin pulls a Dr. Mercer and makes her into a hunter-type necromorph- accidentally. He leaves before he can see what he's created but later during the war, he a) is tormented by her in hallucinations and b) occasionally sees her physically make an appearance and can't get rid of her if he tried because she just regenerates.

Being a Book!Fishlegs Stan, what was your reaction to the father twist?
you’ve opened a door pal
I think it’s really really interesting, to begin with, because everything we know about Fishlegs goes against what we know about Alvin. I think Fishlegs being who he is shows how you don’t have to be who your parents are, just because you have ‘bad blood’ doesn’t mean you can’t break away and be seen as your own person. An interesting part about Alvin and Fishlegs is that Fishlegs has been searching for a family all his life, he’s wanted a parental figure that loves him and cares for him (there’s a cruel irony in how his mother did want him but Alvin outright tells him that he would have killed Fishlegs himself if he had known) and when he is confronted with this living ‘parent’ he ultimately rejects him because he already has a family, one that stands for what’s right and good in the world and not being forced to love and accept Alvin as a father just because he’s his father. That in itself is a really good message to have in the books where the ‘twist parent’ reveal doesn’t end in a shoehorned redemption arc.
Something else that I like to think about is what we see of Fishlegs and his character and how we can relate that to what we know about his parents because Fishlegs and Alvin don’t look similar (at least not in Cressida’s drawings) except from the fact that in the earlier books they’re both very thin so it leads you to believe Fishlegs looks more like his mother, I don’t think there was a lot of groundwork or foreshadowing through the series that at once made me think Alvin was Fishlegs’ father, I don’t know if I missed something or I wasn’t really looking for it but it was a real shock.
That doesn’t take away the fact that in universe, it kind of works? I mean if you look at Hiccup and Camicazi’s relationships with their parents we don’t see much of Bertha or Camicazi’s father (we don’t actually see him at all I don’t think). Hiccup and his relationship with his parents is one where they have that basic foundation of care and love for each other, despite the issues it may have which as the series goes on contrasts Fishlegs’ family situation really well. Fishlegs doesn’t know who he is, he is literally a No-Name whereas Hiccup is never stopped being reminded of who he is and in the end they keep choosing each other (Fishlegs refusing to turn his back on Hiccup, Hiccup never giving up on Fishlegs). Fishlegs putting Alvin in a metaphorical lobster pot and letting him go finally allows him closure in my opinion, he carries with him Alvin’s hook and he has Termagant’s dragon so he carries the knowledge of who his parents were with him but he is ultimately able to let them go.
And another thing (sorry this is getting really long) I think that as Fishlegs gets older and people find out his father was Alvin the Treacherous there is that fear initially- and it’s really interesting to think about how that would impact Fishlegs himself? Would he begin to see Alvin in himself? From Cressida’s drawings as I said there isn’t a lot of resemblance but that can change as a person gets older and sometimes it’s only in certain moments. Like maybe he catches himself in a reflective surface and all he sees is Alvin? Especially with all the three of them have been through the implications of it having a lasting effect on him and influencing the way he acts is a really interesting concept.

Alright so we're putting this AU in little parts because otherwise it'd take me like a week before I posted anything
Ok so it started with me thinking about the weird ships and that the only way that Hiccup/Alvin could work is if, ya know, they're around the same age and also Alvin's not completely awful
And I do love a good enemies to lovers
So basically that lead to me retconning the entire series
Obviously there's gonna be spoilers so
Also everything for this will be tagged HTTYD Child Alvin AU if you want to keep an eye out for the rest, or if you just wanna block the tag :p
So just to get the basics about Alvin out of the way, in this AU he's like 12-13, also since he's a child he never did anything with Termagant, so he's not missing a hand and he's not Fishlegs's dad
Alright book 1 goes as usual, no changes there
Book 2 obviously is when we meet Alvin, things go basically the same, he's in the coffin, they open the coffin, he pops out
He still has the map to the isle of the skullions because "his parents found it while they were farming, knew it was important and being honest farmers they decided they HAD to return map to it's rightful owners, sadly they passed away before they could (bless their souls) but before they did they made him PROMISE that he'd return the map, and so that's why he's here"
And obviously cause everyone is stupid, they fall for the sob story
Continuing on, they make plans to go to the isle of the Skullions, they Actually Go to the isle of the skullions, get the treasure, yadda yadda
Then the other Outcasts show up only difference here is that everyone is extra surprised Alvin's the Chief cause ya know, he's a child, there's been rumors about it but no one actually thought they were true
Continuing on basically the same, the ship sinks, Hiccup saves Alvin, which Alvin finds confusing, also this time Alvin's not really all that interested in the treasure, I mean sure he wants it but like there's more important stuff to be worried about
They get to the cavern, into the treasure room, start fighting
Alvin does NOT get swallowed by the Strangulator
Hiccup being Hiccup knocks Alvin out of the way and the Strangulator grabs him
Hiccup beats it the same way he does in the books but this time it's thrashing causes a partial cave in and that's what makes them think Alvin is dead
From that the book would end the same way

The Impossible Quest
It’s been like a week or so, but I’m back with A Post.
In the books, you have to go on an impossible quest to win someone’s hand in marriage, and I could not stop thinking about it.
Let’s say the one who asks the other’s parent for the marriage receives the quest. He/she is the suitor.
Imagine:
Multiple suitors going on the same quest because the person in question has a lot of admirers. (Tantrum)
A farmer and a bard debating who would be most likely to survive a quest, to decide who should propose.
Bog burglar girls getting quests like “Steal the crown off the head of the King of the Wilderwest” “Take X or Y from Madguts the Murderous” to prove their burglary skills.
Peaceable parents giving very simple quests because they are mere farmers and the quest is only symbolic.
Parents giving exceptionally hard quests (like fly off a cliff without dragon) because their child does not like the suitor in question.
Someone getting married to a person they do not love because that person completed the quest against all odds.
Parents of heirs giving harder quests the lower the rank of the suitor.
Suitors teaming up to do each others quest. (For example: A bog burglar girl steals the thing a berserker boy needs for his quest. The berserker boy fights a terrible foe and takes their sword. They swap items.)
People sabotaging quests because they do not approve of the marriage, or do not want to get married.
Friends offering to marry each other to avoid someone they do not like completing the quest and having to marry them.
A couple getting married in secret without either of them completing a quest. (Possibly Termagant)
Parents asking other parents for quest ideas.
Orphans choosing the quest themselves.
Suitors getting so scared of the quest they blow off the marriage proposal in its entirety.
Suitors dying on their quest and leaving their love.
Heartbroken people who do not marry at all because their true love died on the quest.
Murderous parents giving quests that involve killing X people.
Quests that involve making people into slaves so they can work in the house of the newlyweds.
Wanderer suitors asking the scary grandmothers instead of the parents.
Stoick and Valhallarama’s quest is to beat both of them in a swordfight. They only let the person Hiccup is in love with win.
Poetry competitions for Fishlegs’s hand. Arrogance, Innocence and Patience are judge.
Bertha giving the most random quests ever, but also telling suitors Camicazi will kill them if Cami does not want to marry them.
So many possibilities

Hi you can delete this ask if you want but your Fishlegs post made me want to ramble iamsosorry
FIRST OF ALL there is a massive constant to how Fishlegs and alvin approach the bonds they make with other people. Alvin has multiple times formed “bonds” with others who stay in his life for a long period of time, but he never actually grows to care about these people and drops them the moment they’re no longer useful to him. Termagent, obviously, but also Humungous, who he “befriended” in the Lava-Lout prisons and then betrayed and abandoned for 15 years, and also in book 2 where Alvin spends weeks/months on berk with the Hooligan tribe and then tries to sell every single one of them into slavery without a second thought when they find the treasure. The people in his life have no effect on him and every time he moves on and forgets about them.
MEANWHILE the bonds that Fishlegs forms with his friends (Hiccup and Camicazi, mostly) are SO STRONG and important to him that it supercedes anything else. Like in book 5 where he wants to leave the Archipelago because of the Exterminators, but stays because he refuses to abandon Hiccup. And then goes with Hiccup to Lava-Lout island. Fishlegs’ loyalty to the people that care about him is imo one of his defining traits, and its hilarious that the son of Alvin the Treacherous is Fishlegs the Faithful.
ALSO if Alvin had actually decided to change and stayed around in Fishlegs’ life when he was born, he probably would’ve ended up with the lobster necklace. Again Fishlegs forms such strong bonds with the people who care about him that if Alvin had actually been a Good Father, he would’ve gotten that loyalty instead, and the Dragon Jewel that came with it.
ALSO one of Grimbeard’s criteria for being King was to be a Better Man Than He Was. And what did Grimbeard do? Abandon his baby son. But what did Grimbeard also do? Take his son back into his life when he found him again. Not trying to praise Grimbeard here, since he was still a Bad Awful Man, but Alvin managed to not even meet the minimum criteria of being a Better Man, because of how much of a Bad Awful Father he is.
ALSO in book 2 where Hiccup is trying to reason with Alvin during the swordfight, he says and I quote from the book in my hand rn: “Look, Alvin, it’s never too late to change. You’ve still got a chance to live life differently, make friends, start a family…” when Fishlegs is standing Right There. And then Alvin goes on abt how its Too Late For Him. Yeah, he already had a chance to start a family and he said Nah the first time.
THIS!! THIS THIS THIS
First of all, Fishlegs the Faithful is literally everything to me,, and next the point of how Alvin couldn't even do the bare minimum of becoming a better man by reclaiming his son like Grimbeard once did-- THAT PARALLEL. And the fact that he would have probably ended up with the lobster necklace if he had been a better father. He had his chances the same as Hiccup did to earn his right to become king, but unlike Hiccup, he kept choosing wrong, again and again
And I'll never get over how many times throughout the series that Fishlegs stayed by Hiccup's side just because he refused to leave him, even when what Hiccup was doing was downright crazy. The island of the Exterminators, but also that moment in book 7 when they were flying back from the Northern Wanderer ship? Book 6 where they headed to the library? Book 9 when Hiccup is going to investigate the fortune telling hut and Fishlegs didn't need to come but he said 'of course I'm doing it if you're doing it' as if it's a no brainer??
It just makes me feel things. Alvin abandoning Fishlegs, only for Fishlegs to decide never to abandon Hiccup. To never, ever make Hiccup feel as if he was alone in the world, like he probably has, many times. Fishlegs, who would then go on to establish a tribe for anyone who feels that alone in the world. He's such an underrated gem of a boy.
I love this ask, I love talking about Fishlegs, thank you

My HTTYD Books Fanfic Ideas
Greetings, my fellow Dragonmarkers! I just wanted to post this for you guys as I tell you what my plans are in regards to fanfics for the HTTYD Book Fandom.
Besides my “A Birthday to Remember” short story which is still in-progress, and the odd one-shot, here are some projects that I’d like to do for 2020-2022:
Companions of the Dragonmark — Platonic Pairings Series
Tumblr media
This work, as you already know from a previous post, focuses on platonic pairings in this series. There will be various types, such as human/dragon, human/weapon, human/human, human/pet, etc. Also includes friends, family, mentor/student, and stranger relationships. This will be the main series I will be working on after “A Birthday to Remember”.
<><><><><>
Antagonistic Pairings Series
Tumblr media
This work is something that I’ve just recently came up with, which focuses on antagonistic pairings. This can be pairings between hero/villain, villain/villain, villain/antagonist, hero/antagonist, antagonist/antagonist, etc. Pairings can include, Hiccup and Alvin, Snotlout and Thuggory, Alvin and Excellinor, UG the Uglithug and Excellinor, Madguts and Big Bertha, Snotlout and Hiccup, etc.
I’m liking this because nobody really writes fanfics that focuses on antagonistic pairings. Only romantic and platonic pairings.
What do you guys think?
<><><><><>
Wilderwest Whumpfest
Tumblr media
This idea was cooked up thanks to recent posts announcing Whumptober 2020. Granted, I don’t plan on doing it for this Fandom, but I do plan on still doing this work — a collection of one-shots focusing on whumping various characters in the series. I’d LOVE to hear what you’d like to see and if this sounds like a great idea. ^_^
<><><><><>
A Tale of Two Swords
Tumblr media
This idea has been stewing in the back of mind for about a year now. This is basically a story told from the perspective of Endeavor, the Dragonsword, as he narrates the story and tells us how he came to be and we’ll see his thoughts and perspective not only throughout the lives of Hiccup the First and his line, but also Grimbeard the Ghastly, Hiccup the Second, and Hiccup the Third, and following up all up into the finale of Book 12. Essentially, this IS a Saga. Somewhere along the way, the Stormblade will be introduced and we’ll get into his POV as well once he is born. needless to say that there’ll be a rivalry between the two — though Endeavor just doesn’t care and ignores Stormblade whenever possible. I mean, the Dragonsword is around 1000 years old already, and the Stormblade is acting all macho for a newborn hunk of shiny metal. In Endeavor’s “eyes”, Stormblade be an infant. lol XD
Also, I just REALLY love Endeavor. (I have an old post that talks all about that here.) One of my favorite characters in the series, despite it being a sword and not a human or an animal character. But I can feel him humming with personality... if that makes sense? But I’ve always had a special love for personification. Ever since I was young and studied literature in middle school, personification has always been my most favorite plot device. I can’t really explain why. Maybe it’s because it’s fun? Getting into the minds of inanimate objects, animals, nature, etc and imagining what they would say and act and feel if they could speak and communicate? It’s fun for ME, at least. ^_^
<><><><><>
Exile on Cannibal Isle
Tumblr media
This story idea is another one that’s been stewing in my brain for about a year or less, give or take. (I’m quite proud of the title, if I do say so myself. Hehe.) This is basically a what-if scenario, a canon divergence, that focuses on what would happen should Hiccup and the others were exiled the night that they should’ve been. That would’ve been interesting to see. I mean, of course, it would mean that 800+ Hooligans and Meatheads would perish, but such is the life of a Saga character(s). ^_^
Other alternative (and more likely) scenarios could be:
1) Hiccup, Thuggory, and the others still get banished after the demise of the Green Death (because Vikings are jerks).
or 2) Hiccup fails to get Toothless in time so he ends up being the only one in his group to NOT have a dragon, and thus is immediately exiled (in winter, yay).
(If you guys can come up with better scenarios, let me know.)
Now, Cannibal Isle is on the map on the Book of Dragons extra book. You won’t find it anywhere else. (That being said, the Isle DOES get mentioned by Hiccup in the epilogue of Book 4: “How to Cheat a Dragon’s Curse”. Only other time.)
Tumblr media
Now in Book 1, while they mention that the kids will be exiled on the Mainland, it mentions cannibals. Of course, in Book 8, it mentions that the Vikings of the Western Archipelago hate sailing anywhere near the Eastern side (the Mainland), so it seems contradictory, in my opinion, for them to send the kids there into exile. So when I saw this map, and saw that there was an island called “Cannibal Isle”, it made sense to me. A place where cannibals exist, and it’s close by from the Inner Isles.
What do you think? Should they be exiled on Cannibal Isle or on the Mainland? Which sounds better?
<><><><><>
Thuggory’s Tale
Tumblr media
This story idea is yet another one that I’ve been thinking on doing for awhile now. This essentially is Thuggory’s story, and focuses on HIS POV throughout the 12 books — including and especially his views and thoughts concerning Hiccup. I mean, the guy DESERVES to have a book that’s all about HIM, right?! He’s so cool! I’m such a Thuggory fan! I wish I had a brother like him. I envy Hiccup. lol ^_^
The bromance is strong with this one. lol XD
<><><><><>
Quest for Wilderwest — Quest for Camelot AU
Tumblr media
This work, as you already know on a previous post, will be a Quest for Camelot AU involving the HTTYD Book characters. Since I’ve already gotten a lot of feedback on this already, I might end up doing this story first as my first multi-chapter story. But we’ll see. ;-)
<><><><><>
Fishlegs’s Impossible Quest 2
Tumblr media
This work I just thought up about a month ago. This is what the title says. Fishlegs SECOND Quest! This time, trying to win Barbara’s hand in marriage — much to Hiccup’s ire. (What is with this guy and these Valkyrie princesses?) I’m debating whether Hiccup should tag along, or if he should stay since he IS the KING. Maybe give Fishlegs Camicazi, instead? Along with some warriors from his Tribe, of course. Him being a Chief and all that. Needless to say, Hiccup and Camicazi will NEEEEVER let Fishlegs live this one down, regardless if he succeeds or not.
Speaking of which, SHOULD I have Fishlegs succeed? Or should I let him fail... again? I mean, would Barbara even be interested in a guy who’s allergic to her CAT?!
<><><><><>
The Wilderwest Saga
Tumblr media
The title is what it says it is. It’s about the story AFTER the series, that focuses on the reign of King Hiccup the Third and co. and how the Wilderwest came to be, what Hiccup did during his life, his future wife and family, etc. It’ll also focus on the other characters and their lives as well. I’m very excited about this one as well. And I’m sure you are, too.
Maybe I’ll get lucky one day and Cressida Cowell will read it and be like, “Oh, what a great idea! I’ll write a sequel series focusing on Hiccup the Third’s reign and finally bring a conclusion to Hiccazi.”
I mean, it’s wishful thinking, but a guy can dream, can’t he? lol XD
<><><><><>
Hiccup the First’s Saga
Tumblr media
This work will be a Saga focusing on Hiccup the First and his story, from his birth, to the events of the First Dragon War, to him being the First King and the details of his reign, of his conflict against the Romans and the Uglithugs — essentially filling out the blanks in the life of one extraordinary character that most resembles Hiccup the Third.
Hiccup the Second’s Saga
Tumblr media
This work will be focusing on Hiccup the Second’s story, and will be the sequel of Grimbeard’s Saga (or Hiccup the First’s Saga). It will focus on his life with the dragons, his reunion with his father, his life at the palace, his adventures, his conflicts with his father and eldest brother... his death (which, even in a saga, was messed up).
Oh, aaaaand I might have him find love as well. Hehe. Because the books never specify how old he was when he died. And if he was a rebel and went to the library, spoke Dragonese, took the Dragonmark, freed the slaves multiple times, I have a feeling that Hiccup might’ve fallen in love with one of these slaves and married her in secret and had a child through her, whose line eventually led to the Druid Guardian.
So, yeah, this Saga’s gonna get messy... and juicy. Hehe. ^_^
<><><><><>
Possible Projects:
.
Hiccup the Third’s Saga
This work will be a more realistic version of the HTTYD Book series — similar to what you’d see in a Viking Saga, like those for the other two Hiccups. However, this does not mean that the plot will be seriously changed. It just means that I’ll be getting rid of some of the more... exaggerated and absurd parts of the plot that wouldn’t happen in real life. I’ll also be getting rid of the horned helmets and make the Tribes more Viking-y. And I’ll be adding more historical elements into the story, along with those of the previous two Hiccups.
I’m debating whether to get rid of the Dragonese/talking dragons element to the story (having it like the movie franchise), or if I should keep it. What do you think?
Termagant’s Tale
This work will be a story focusing on Fishlegs’s mother, Termagant. How she grew up, how she lived, how she met and fell in love with Alvin the Fake Fisherman, how she felt when he disappeared and how she gave birth... and how she was forced to get rid of her baby. Every single thing. I’m not sure whether to do this from Termagant’s POV, or if I should do it through the eyes of Arrogance, Patience, and Innocence, her Deadly Shadow, and have it be as if they’re telling Fishlegs the tale of his mother from their eyes.
What do you think?
Grimbeard the Ghastly’s Saga
This work will be focusing on the life of Grimbeard the Ghastly, from his birth to his death. Every detail will be noted, every story shall be heard, and every scene shall be seen. Even the stories of him that you DO know won’t tell you everything. This Saga will further detail and add on to those stories. Including his marriage to Chinhilda, his war against the Uglithugs, his raiding expeditions, his reign as King, his questionable and outright foolish decisions — the whole shebang!
Disclaimer: While I will try my very best, it is most likely that he won’t be such a nice and relatable character to like.
Modern AU series
This work will a collection of one-shots focusing on the HTTYD Book characters in the modern day. The reason why I have this here, rather than farther up, is because I don’t have many ideas for one-shots in this AU. So I would appreciate any prompts and character choices to help me in this, and maybe I might just get working on this if I end up getting enough.
<><><><><>
Anyway, these are the projects that I hope to do in the next couple of years. (If I’m still alive by then, that is.) These stories will probably take time and I’ll probably be focusing on the top 3 since they’ll be one-shots, basically, so they’ll be easier for me to write. But I will be choosing a multi-chapter story idea and working on it.
While I won’t be working on these quite as much since I have other accounts and other Fandoms that I place higher priorities on, I will be working on these as much as I can, despite my schedule. This Fandom holds a special place in my heart and I want to contribute as much as I can so that fans can continue reading recent fanfics for this precious Fandom. ^_^
So tell me what you think? Any titles that interest you? Let me know either in the comments or reblogs.

That Alvin AU I can’t stop thinking about. Imagine:
AU courtesy of @venomousvorpent and @granny-griffin @jayalaw @httydbooks-doodler @readerofthewilderwest @books-are-like-dragons
Alvin is not so terrible. He stays with Termagant and baby Fishlegs, and while he feels a bit disappointed with his life, his wife and son’s adoration keep him happy and friendly. Maybe he even loves them a bit too.
She teaches their son kindness and he teaches him trickery (not treachery) to make up for the fact that he is a runt.
Fishlegs grows up with Deadly Shadow, a mom to write poetry with, a dad to take him fishing, and a lesser heir of the friggin Murderous tribe.
Stoick marries Grimhilda the Gormless and they have their two reassuringly stupid children. Bertha marries a Silent guy and Camicazi turns out exactly as in canon.
Valhallarama still believes she can be the next king/queen of the Wilderwest, but she marries Humongous and their child is smart, buff and beautiful.
If she is not The One, perhaps her child is? Valhallarama and Humongous tell them the history of the Wilderwest and train them to be the Ultimate™ hero.
What I am saying is:
Skinny runt Fishlegs with two loving parents and a three headed deadly shadow takes on the world while accidentally gathering the king’s lost things.
Camicazi can be his cool bff and the reassuringly stupid children can be part of his team (kind of like the twins)
His rival?
Valhallarama’s perfect kid.

#i know parents naming their children isnt how things went#but i also don't believe that Termagant would have just left his name as the 'runt' name he was given#httyd books#httyd#httyd book spoilers#book fishlegs
I was gonna do a bit of talking in the tags but then it got a bit long so I decided to add my two cents up here:
Hiccup is either a hooligan-exclusive Runt Name, or the Murderous Tribe's Naming Dame also gave him the name Hiccup but without the Horrendous Haddock part, as Horrendous Haddock is implied to be a Family Name for the children of Hooligan Chiefs/Wilderwest Kings.
There's a Non-Zero chance that Fishlegs' original name could have been Hiccup The Murderous, which for a kid who named his dragon Horrorcow would have been very fitting I think.
But there's also a non-zero chance his name could have been Hiccup the Peaceable, which he would probably have very much wanted to live up to.
Either way in this hypothetical universe where Termagant survives and raises her kid in secret and her kid may or may not also be named Hiccup, I feel like the two of them would have met during Hero's guide to deadly Dragons, probably because of Camicazi stealing the stealth dragon while he was still on it. Except for instead of the stealth dragon, it would probably have been the Deadly Shadow, which would have made Hiccup's 12th/3rd birthday real interesting.
They called him Fishlegs because he came from the sea.

One thing I love about Fishlegs’s story is how his adoption arc went. It’s just so original. Most movies/series/books/whatever portay it as a dramatic, shocking thing. A never ending quest to find your ‘real’ quote unquote parents because you cannot feel like a whole person without that information. (Heather and Dagur in rtte for example)
Nah...
~
That’s not how it works. Because there are OTHER people in a person’s life. People that that person gets emotionally attached to and loves. And no. That love is not less ‘real’ or ‘familial’ than the love for one’s parents.
Don’t get me wrong, but aren’t real parents two people that love you, care for you as a child, read you bedtime stories and comfort you after a nightmare?
That has nothing to do with ‘real’ genetics. Your adoptive parents chose you. The supposed ‘real’ parents only decided (or didn’t decide, you could have been an accident for all you know) to put you on the earth.
In Fishlegs’s case that person is Hiccup. Fishlegs literally says “You have been like a mother and father to me Hiccup.”
~
Plus, life goes on, and you can’t spend every waking minute thinking about your supposed ‘real’ parents. In daily life there are much more pressing matters, like at what time you had That Appointment, or whether it’s going to rain or not. Chances are the adoptive ones are on your mind much, much more often. After all, you see them, speak to them, live with them.
And eventually that dramatic suspension will end up as a vague curiosity that pops up once in a while. The five stages of grief anyone? You grieve for the parents you never knew and end with ‘acceptance’. To quote Fishlegs: “Once I wanted to look for my family, I’d dreamed I’d show them this, and they would know I was theirs. But now I’m grown and I know the Hooligan Tribe is my family.”
Three cheers for Cressida.
~
Another thing that usually bothers me is the reunion, if there is one. They are always tearful and joyous with hugs and a feeling that everything is right. (Rapunzel from Tangled for example)
Again, nah.
Those people in front of you are total strangers who you happen to share genes with. You don’t KNOW them. At all.
Back to Rapunzel, I get that literally everyone is an upgrade from mother Gothel, but one of the most striking things about that film is how Rapunzel stretches out her arms as Gothel trips out the window. She did not want her to die, she wanted her (relatively) sweet mother back. Because however twisted it may be, she KNEW Gothel. Considered the woman her mother. The king and queen? Nope.
And you aren’t happily excited for those reunions. Nail-biting-nervous is the word I would use. Will they recognize me? Will they like how I turned out? Will they like my adoptive parents? Will they look like me? Will they tell me why they did not keep me? And what if they don’t?
Well, we can cross a sappy reunion of Fishlegs’ list because one parent is dead and the other a Total Disappointment.
~
That’s another thing I liked. Sometimes adoption stories DON’T have a happy ending. Who knows, maybe one or both parents are dead like Termagant. Or want nothing to do with you. Or are not very nice people in general. (Fighlegs qualifies for all three.)
And the reunion that Fisglegs did get was a raw and painful one. Because that’s the truth of it. Joy is not the only emotion you feel during a reunion. There’s still that one thing called parental abandonment. And a whole lot of hopes, fears and questions from past, present and future. Grief, curiosity, anger and confusion have to battle that supposed joy, and chances are that that joy is not going to end up victorious.
~
Excuse me, I was writing about Hiccup and Furious’s grimler parents (11 chapters done yas) and it somehow turned into a rant about how adoption is often written wrong. Cressida did so well! (I love Fishlegs to death)
I just feel for this very much.
