Resolutions?
It was never a “thing” for my family to make New Year Resolutions. New Years was just about spending time with the family, watching the ball go up around 9pm, and then going to sleep at 9:30.
This year, though, I found myself reflecting about the past year. I had a kid, and was able to go back to my pre-pregnancy weight, but I wanted to lose more. I wouldn’t characterize myself as “over weight,” but I would like to melt off a few more pounds so that I feel comfortable in my own skin again.
This past year, I wasn’t good at dieting or exercising consistently. I would start and be good for about 1-2 weeks and fall off the rail for another 1-3 weeks, and repeat. I was just going around in circles, feeling annoyance at myself for “having to start over again,” and not being more strict with myself about x, y, and z. The more I thought, the more I came to realize that my whole view last year was wrong and I came up with a few things to remember.
Remember that it’s okay to skip a workout! I’ll be the first to admit that when life gets a little busy ~ especially being a teacher AND a new mom with a one year old ~ I’ll opt to not workout that day because “I’m too tired,” “I haven’t spent time with my family,” “I have too much work to finish,” “I just want to relax.” Excuses, excuses, excuses. After one pops out, it soon flows like a river, and suddenly I haven’t worked out in about 3-4 days. At that point, I feel like it’s been far too long since I worked out, and now I NEED to start my program over. WRONG. Starting today, I need to stop thinking like that. If I skip a day, that’s FINE, just don’t make it a habit! (And always start back up where you left off!
Remember that it’s okay to have something junky occasionally. I’m totally the type that can do pretty awesome the first two weeks of “dieting,” but then suddenly I get cravings OR someone brought “goodies” to work, and the temptation is just too great! It’s OKAY to have a treat, JUST DON’T GO OVERBOARD! (And I do go overboard every time since if you binge your body won’t know that it’s multiple things, lol.) I have to tell myself: it’s not really dieting, its just being healthier as a whole.
Remember to make my health a priority. I don’t have my health in mind when I stress eat 5 cookies at work, or buy all the junk and binge eat at home to feed my feelings. Every time I’ve done those things, I have never felt good about myself afterwards. I always felt like my actions have always put me back at the starting line.
Remember to love yourself. Being healthy and fit takes time. I’ve read countless of blogs and commentary where they say that you need to love yourself BEFORE you workout, otherwise you will never be happy with what you see in the mirror. This is so true! From the ages of 18-31 my weight has ranged between 109-165 pounds, and I have NEVER been comfortable in my own skin (even when I weighed 109 ;=_=). I always would work out so I could “look better.”
This year, I’m going to keep these things in mind. Now onto Days 1 & 2 reflections!!
Lemme just say: I’M SO SORE!!! And I’m very much enjoying Lift4! The workouts are pretty intense, and leave you hurting the next day.
I was still contemplating on what to do with Lift4, and have decided that I’m going to run on my “off days.” Starting today, Saturday, and Sunday, I will be going to the gym and hopping on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes. I’m going to use the “Running” app and do the “Running for weight loss” training plan.

Ugh, Wednesday
I’m EXHAUSTED. I had alarms on (from 5 am and on) and I snoozed through every single one of them. For the ones I remember, I couldn’t even pry my eyes open. So working out this morning didn’t pan out like I had hoped.
I also realized that I ran out of my 21 day fix veggie egg cups, so I had to make more. I really don’t like cooking. I had to force myself to get off my lazy ass and make food for myself because I know loafer me would have found other things (useless calories) to fill the void.
Breakfast made and eaten ✅
Workout? ❌ Yet to be done. I’m hoping once my husband gets back, I’ll go to the gym and hop on the treadmill. I typically would take my kid to the gym and drop her off at the child care area, but she got ringworm… =_=;;
I’m also going to have to make more soup, since there is none. 😩
Now, onto complaining about something else: I CAN BARELY LIFT MY ARMS!! Lift4 is something else, but you can feel what it does to you! Everytime I’m sore I get super llethargic, and it’s so hard for me to do anything. BUT ~

I’ve always been bad about following through with health and workouts. I want to know how it feels to finish something and feel that sense of accomplishment. I’m just going to continue trudging through, and hope I’ll make it!
Ok!! Update ~ I just completed my treadmill workout and survived! It was hard to tell myself to leave the couch and go to the gym, but my husband really helped give me that push that I needed.

Lift4 I don’t know about you but with the summer months sometimes it seems a little bit more challenging all the different busyness going on to focus on getting in movement.............. and if you’re anything like me you still want to be able to have a easy way to do it without taking a whole lot of time. This is why am so excited I’m going to be incorporating and basic program that’s going to focus on some strength training and some calorie burning interval training (HIIT)....... and even more fantastic part about it is that I’ll only be working out four days a week with the trainer and then I have three other days I can do whatever I want with. Weather I just want to go to the pool, going for a walk or sit on the coach with a good 📖............. so I’ll Really be getting back to the basics of being consistent with working out for around 30 or 40 minutes for four days a week. That sounds totally doable doesn’t it? Would you like to join me?? I know you do!!! My grandmother’s uncle, Lawrence Herde, was in the Navy in World War II. He wrote the following article, and I would like to share it since it’s Memorial Day. My grandmother shared it on facebook, so I just copied it here.

These are my thoughts and experiences that took place as I participated in the invasion of Iwo Jima. I was in the 5th Amphibious Fleet, on USS LCT 866, a landing craft of 117 feet long. When we left the States, the craft was in three sections, mounted on the top deck of an LST, in excess of three hundred feet long. There was two sections of another LCT mounted on the top deck of the same LST. It was done this way to transport more of the craft overseas in a shorter period of time. One and two thirds LCTS on one LST.
We left New Orleans in March of 1944l to Guantonimo Bay in Cuba, through the Panama Canal up to San Diego and then to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. After arriving at Pearl Harbor, two huge cranes lifted our LCT off the LST one section at a time and placed them in the water. Some small boats then pushed the three sections to an isolated area of the harbor where it was our job to put the LCT together. This was done by pumping water into ballast tanks and lining up the sections, placing a gasket between them, bolting them together with huge bolts and nuts. It seemed like hundreds of them. Some erector set, hey?
After the assembly we stayed in Hawaii, practicing maneuvers and invasions until January 1945. At that time the same two cranes lift4ed our LCT out of the water and placed it on ways that had been built on the top deck of the LST. We were then on our way to the invasion.
On board the LST were part of the 4th Marine Division. Their officers held meetings every6 day on the tank deck of our LCT (mounted on the ways of the LST). They had a paper machet model of Iwo which showed some gun emplacements but they didn’t know about the network of caves that the Japs had armed. The marines had aerial photos and photos were taken by submarines of the island. They had pages of names of every Jap soldier on the island and some civilians.
We arrived at Iwo on February 19, 1945. It was a bright sunny day. The kind that reminded you of a Sunday morning on the way to church. The Air Force had bombed the island for thirty days and armada of navy ships surrounding it, battlewagons, cruisers, destroyers, rocket ships had shelled if for four days. Little did we know that the Japs were safely underground in their caves.
The order came over the loudspeakers for the marines to load the amtracks and the bow doors of the LST were opened and the ramp lowered. One by one the amtracks traversed into the water to their rendezvous point and then continu4ed to circle until all the invasion force was ready. The first wave went in at 9 am.
The Japs were sniping at us. You could see the bullets splash in the water as they hit. I think they were trying to gauge the distance between them and us.
At that time the ballast tanks on one side of the LST were filled with water to put a 30 degree list on the ship. The blocks that were holding the LCT on the ways were chopped out and the LCT went sliding down the ways, (they were greased) just as a ship in a shipyard. There were heavy lines that were tied to the LCT so that it wouldn’t get away and float off, uncontrollable. A cargo net was thrown over the port side of the LST and we climbed down that onto our ship. The motor machs started the three grey marine diesels and I, as an electrician mate, started the generators. The captain (an ensign), got orders over the radio, to proceed to a merchant marine ship to unload its cargo. We had problems with the water pumps on the diesels so we couldn’t do that. After we repaired them it was dark so we didn’t take on cargo until the next day. After taking on munitions, oil drums, and loads of other supplies, we headed for the beach. The sand was black and the island smelled like rotten eggs. What a god forsaken place. We were ready to unload but we started taking mortar fire, so we had to make a fast retreat out to sea again. There was an abandoned rusty hulk of an old ship on the beach and the Japs had a squad in there radio directing fire at the beachhead. The marines spotted them and c leaned them out. We were then able to hit the beach and the Sea Bees unloaded our cargo. We then continued to ferry supplies from the merchant ship to the marines on the island.
The invasion was supposed to last seven days. What a miscalculation that was!!! The island wasn’t declared secure until the latter part of April!
The most memorable thing that I remember was when the marines captured Mt. Suribachi. We were on the beach, when we heard cheers coming from all over the island and when I looked art Suribachi the marines had the flag up and were kneeling down, along side of the flagpole. It reminded me of a Saturday afternoon, when the high school you were rooting for, made a touchdown. That was a deadly score!
Another thing that brought you to your senses, was the smell of rotting flesh, mixed with the smell of gunfire. This was noticeable every time you hit the beach.
The US Marines did one hell of a job in securing that island and they deserve all the praise and respect of every citizen in this country and the free world.
