« Most of us take progress for granted. But we should remember that living standards 250 years ago were little different from what they were 2,500 years ago. Not until the Enlightenment and the Industrial Revolution did we achieve the enormous improvements in life expectancy, health, and living standards that have defined modernity.
Enlightenment thinkers recognized that scientific experimentation and tinkering could help people understand nature and create new, transformative technologies; and that the social sciences could enable closer coordination in efforts to improve conditions for all members of society. Such efforts required the rule of law to displace absolutism, respect for truth to prevail over obscurantism, and the elevation of expertise in human affairs. Among the most disturbing features of the MAGA revolution is its outright rejection of these values. »
— Nobel economics laureate Joseph Stiglitz writing at Project Syndicate. (archived)
Trumpsters and their patriarchal Christian fundamentalist lickspittles think that they can repeal The Enlightenment and still maintain a decent standard of living.
But the philosophical revolution during The Enlightenment quickly spawned a scientific and technological revolution which is continuing today.
Life expectancy at birth in 1800 was in the mid to late 30s. By 1900, life expectancy in the United States had risen to 47. After a dip during COVID, it is back up to 78.
An administration that's brimming over with climate deniers, vaccine skeptics, and creationists will give us a decline in the quality and length of life.
The multi-billionaire MAGA oligarchs can build bunkers, buy blood from young people, and move to Mars to get away from the mess they helped to create on Earth. But the rest of us cannot afford to throw away the progress of the last couple of centuries to please the MAGA cult.
Reality based thinking and real science are necessary for the functioning of a healthy 21st century society.

The study of Earth's axis shift due to excessive groundwater pumping highlights a troubling trend. Between 1993 and 2010, humans pumped over two trillion tons of groundwater, redistributing mass to oceans and causing Earth's axis to drift by approximately 2.6 feet. This phenomenon is a result of changes in the planet's mass distribution caused by human activity, particularly in mid-latitude regions such as the U.S. and India. While this drift doesn't affect the length of days or seasons, it exemplifies how significant human actions are in altering planetary mechanics. Groundwater extraction also contributes to sea-level rise and intensifies climate challenges.
Over the next 50 years, if unsustainable water use continues alongside rising global temperatures, humanity may face worsening resource scarcity, higher sea levels, and increased geopolitical tensions over water. Groundwater overuse can exacerbate droughts and agricultural losses, undermining food security globally.
Recommendations for Change
1. Adopt Sustainable Water Management:
Shift to more efficient irrigation systems and crop choices.
Invest in wastewater recycling and groundwater replenishment projects.
Implement stricter regulations to prevent over-extraction.
2. Global Collaboration:
Establish international agreements to manage shared water resources equitably.
Increase funding for water conservation in developing nations.
3. Climate Mitigation:
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions to slow the melting of glaciers and rising sea levels, which compound the effects of water mismanagement.
Support innovation in clean energy to reduce stress on water-dependent fossil fuel processes.
4. Awareness and Education:
Promote understanding of water's value and the consequences of overuse.
Encourage local and community-driven initiatives to conserve water.
5. Advance Geoengineering Research:
Explore sustainable ways to reverse or mitigate the impacts of human-induced environmental changes, such as artificial groundwater recharge or solar radiation management.
By taking immediate and collective action, humanity can mitigate the potentially catastrophic consequences of water mismanagement and ensure a more sustainable future.

#''everything was changed—even the air—instead of the harsh dry winds that used to attack me a gentle breeze was blowing; laden with scents #a sound like water came from the mountains: it was the wind in the forest...'' (from giono's the man who planted trees) #also it reminds me of wangari maathai's memoir when she said she felt worried about #the complex problems in her country which felt impossible to solve #''but i have never been interested in what is not possible'' #and so she focused on something she could do now i.e. plant trees and get others to plant trees
"A century of gradual reforestation across the American East and Southeast has kept the region cooler than it otherwise would have become, a new study shows.
The pioneering study of progress shows how the last 25 years of accelerated reforestation around the world might significantly pay off in the second half of the 21st century.
Using a variety of calculative methods and estimations based on satellite and temperature data from weather stations, the authors determined that forests in the eastern United States cool the land surface by 1.8 – 3.6°F annually compared to nearby grasslands and croplands, with the strongest effect seen in summer, when cooling amounts to 3.6 – 9°F.
The younger the forest, the more this cooling effect was detected, with forest trees between 20 and 40 years old offering the coolest temperatures underneath.
“The reforestation has been remarkable and we have shown this has translated into the surrounding air temperature,” Mallory Barnes, an environmental scientist at Indiana University who led the research, told The Guardian.
“Moving forward, we need to think about tree planting not just as a way to absorb carbon dioxide but also the cooling effects in adapting for climate change, to help cities be resilient against these very hot temperatures.”
The cooling of the land surface affected the air near ground level as well, with a stepwise reduction in heat linked to reductions in near-surface air temps.
“Analyses of historical land cover and air temperature trends showed that the cooling benefits of reforestation extend across the landscape,” the authors write. “Locations surrounded by reforestation were up to 1.8°F cooler than neighboring locations that did not undergo land cover change, and areas dominated by regrowing forests were associated with cooling temperature trends in much of the Eastern United States.”
By the 1930s, forest cover loss in the eastern states like the Carolinas and Mississippi had stopped, as the descendants of European settlers moved in greater and greater numbers into cities and marginal agricultural land was abandoned.
The Civilian Conservation Corps undertook large replanting efforts of forests that had been cleared, and this is believed to be what is causing the lower average temperatures observed in the study data.
However, the authors note that other causes, like more sophisticated crop irrigation and increases in airborne pollutants that block incoming sunlight, may have also contributed to the lowering of temperatures over time. They also note that tree planting might not always produce this effect, such as in the boreal zone where increases in trees are linked with increases in humidity that way raise average temperatures."

USA please listen to me: the price of “teaching them a lesson” is too high. take it from New Zealand, who voted our Labour government out in the last election because they weren’t doing exactly what we wanted and got facism instead.
Trans rights are being attacked, public transport has been defunded, tax cuts issued for the wealthy, they've mass-defunded public services, cut and attacked the disability funding model, cut benefits, diverted transport funding to roads, cut all recent public transport subsidies, cancelled massive important infrastructure projects like damns and ferries (we are three ISLANDS), fast tracked mining, oil, and other massive environmentally detrimental projects and gave the power the to approve these projects singularly to three ministers who have been wined and dined by lobbyists of the companies that have put the bids in to approve them while one of the main minister infers he will not prioritise the protection of endangered species like the archeys frog over mining projects that do massive environmental harm. They have attacked indigenous rights in an attempt to negate the Treaty of Waitangi by “redefining it”; as a backup, they are also trying to remove all mentions of the treaty from legislation starting with our Child Protection laws no longer requiring social workers to consider the importance of Maori children’s culture when placing those children; when the Waitangi Tribunal who oversees indigenous matters sought to enquire about this, the Minister for Children blocked their enquiry in a breach of comity that was condemned in a ruling — too late to do anything — by our Supreme Court. They have repealed labour protections around pay and 90 day trials, reversed our smoking ban, cancelled our EV subsidy, cancelled our water infrastructure scheme that would have given Maori iwi a say in water asset management, cancelled our biggest city’s fuel tax, made our treasury and inland revenue departments less accountable, dispensed of our Productivity Commission, begun work on charter schools and military boot camps in an obvious push towards privatisation, cancelled grants for first home buyers, reduced access to emergency housing, allowed no cause evictions, cancelled our Maori health system that would have given Maori control over their own public medical care and funding, cut funding of services like budgeting advice and food banks, cancelled the consumer advocacy council, cancelled our medicine regulations, repealed free prescriptions, deferred multiple hospital builds, failed to deliver on pre-election medical promises, reversed a gun ban created in response to the mosque shootings, brought back three strikes = life sentence policy, increased minimum wage by half the recommended amount, cancelled fair pay for disabled workers, reduced wheelchair services, reversed our oil and gas exploration ban, cancelled our climate emergency fund, cut science research funding including climate research, removed limits on killing sea lions, cut funding for the climate change commission, weakened our methane targets, cancelled Significant National Areas protections, have begun reversing our ban on live exports. Much of this was passed under urgency.
It’s been six months.

Report: Q3 sees decline in US digital health deal count, but check sizes remain stable
- By InnoNurse Staff -
In the third quarter of 2024, digital health startups in the U.S. secured $2.4 billion in venture capital across 110 deals, down from 133 deals in the previous quarter, according to a Rock Health report.
However, the average deal size remained steady at $22 million, indicating that investors are focusing on fewer but larger bets. Merger and acquisition (M&A) activity also slowed, with only 21 deals, compared to an average of 37 per quarter in 2023.
The digital health sector has raised $8.2 billion across 379 investments so far in 2024, a significant drop from the $10.8 billion raised in 2023, and even further from the $29 billion peak during the pandemic. As investment has cooled, companies are now focused on meeting performance metrics and delivering faster returns on investment. Some are using strategic acquisitions to expand their offerings, such as Fabric’s acquisition of MeMD and Zipnosis. This approach is viewed as cost-effective compared to building new products from scratch, especially in light of valuation declines in the sector.

Today could be a little rocky
National Geology Day (4/7)Geology rocks but geography is where it’s at. I’m not sure I like geologists. They find “faults” in everything. :0)BTW: Wyoming is the “rockiest” state. We both learned something new today.
