"I feel incredibly personal about the things I make anyway, but this is obviously next level. So it's been amazing and also quite overwhelming and strange... Certainly in a creative way, building a character from the ground up knowing so intimately every word, every line, every moment. And really knowing that with the rest of the characters. Really feeling that— particularly with Tom's writing. And then being on set hearing his words be spoken knowing that each word, each sentence, each comma means something is sort of amazing."
—Daisy Ridley about her original concept movie Magpie (2024)

Bonus clip of Michael on the WTAWTAW podcast talking about his experiences with gender expression as a teenager in Port Talbot and mentioning his crush on John Taylor again. Transcript of notable highlights below:
Michael: "So when I was 12, 13--early '80s, the time that Allie is talking about--and I saw girls with lip gloss and wearing rah-rah skirts and leg warmers and stuff, [whispers] and I was a little bit jealous. Course, never said that, never said that. In Port Talbot if I'd mentioned that, my life would've been hell. But I do remember being quite...attracted by the trappings. A lot of trappings for girls. We didn't have stuff like that for boys. There were rituals for girls, doing your makeup, doing your hair." Michael: "I mean, my first crush--I said this on a thing I did called The Assembly recently--my first crush was a man called--ah, John Taylor from Duran Duran. Ohh, he was the most beautiful thing I'd ever seen. The way I processed it was, like, I'm gonna try and look like John Taylor, try and make my hair like John Taylor." Michael: "And they always used to have a bit of lip gloss going on, didn't they? Those New Romantics. But like I say, I couldn't really try that out in Port Talbot."
This goes directly back to things I have written about on my blog previously, about Michael having these feelings and not being able to express them because of where he grew up and the hateful climate that Section 28 fostered. This is why it is so difficult for someone of Michael's generation to label themselves, because none of that is lightly shaken off.
Even hearing the way Michael talks about it in the podcast, you can tell that this is not a joke, but a longing for something that he still remembers so vividly, because it meant so much to him at the time, and still does. Also, Michael has now mentioned his crush on John Taylor twice in the span of two months after not saying anything about it for years, and if that doesn't tell you where his heart and mind are right now, I'm not sure what does. Neither he nor David need a formal announcement to make it clear who they are, because they've already been telling us...

i love when star trek does not even try with their aliens' appearance. not even the good old nasal bridge prosthetic. like that's steve, a peculiar alien from the strange and unknown deeps of space. coincidentally he also looks like a regular white dude

ok listen there's a lot of problems i have that will make me latch onto an interest and that's it forever
but also in recent times (last year or so) i've been in a big creative slump and attempts to get into group creative projects or do networking in my field and make connections or get ANY response to ANY job application have been uhhhhhhhhh disappointing
so after i finished being very very very drugged up on poison ivy medication (and thus wildly emotional and also too sleepy and unfocused to do anything) i decided i needed to work on projects that were just mine for me. and i had two short games near completion. and so.
so i worked on them and finished working on them to playableness (altho only one publishable yet) and that felt SO GOOD even if i wasn't quite perfectly pleased with them and even if only few ppl were interested
so i did more game design.
so anyway that's gonna be my entire passion in life for a while, while i work on that uhhhhh doing anything in my actual field that i went to school for and worked very very hard to finish up even if i was 32 by the time i graduated.

listening to ppl react to brokeback mountain is such a great way to identify who is good at paying attention to subtext and who is not lol
so many podcasters have cited the scene where theyre on their last campring trip together and jack tells ennis he has a girl hes been seeing on the side as proof of jack's bisexuality or whatever and like. look. you can argue whatever sexuality you want for him, but if ur gonna do that, CITE A DIFFERENT SCENE!
the whole reason the scene w david harbour and anna farris was written into the script at all was so that later in the story, when jack's dad tells ennis that he had another guy who was going to come up there and live w him on his parent's ranch, we realize that the "rancher's wife" jack said he'd been sneaking around with back in texas was actually the same ranch neighbor jack's dad was talking about, meaning jack was lying to ennis
and thats also why ennis kind of freezes for a beat when jack's dad says that, bc he's making the same connections the audience already did. or at least was supposed to lol

My Neighbour Totoro is a pretty foundational movie in the Studio Ghibli canon, beloved by generations - the mascot of the studio, even! - and admired by solarpunks. But what is it about this movie that is so inspiring? The visuals are beautiful, but what about the plot and conflict? Is there conflict? Compared to, say, the flashy plots of action films or even recent Disney animated features, can there be satisfying conflict in a story that doesn't seem to have much in the way of stakes? Or perhaps is this a different way of storytelling altogether? Ariel and Christina consider these questions and more in a discussion of My Neighbor Totoro. Tune in and let us know what you think!

"It's an old Pratt family recipe," Josephine explained, saying, "My family used to make it for farmer's markets when I was younger, we used to sell it by the bagful; it was always very popular, so we oftentimes sold out very quickly. It's been a long time since I made it, so it felt good to get back in the kitchen and make a batch-especially with two great little helpers."
"We helped!" Lon declared proudly through a mouthful of popcorn, and even Erika smiled a little and nodded-it had actually been really fun, helping Grandma Josephine out. It was a lot like being in the kitchen with Grandma June, and that helped Erika feel a little more at ease about pitching in.
And watching her favorite movie also helped her feel a little more comfortable being around these new family members, admittedly, able to forget about her anxieties in favor of colorful animation and wonderful music, with the hot, sweet kettle corn being an additional bonus. Laying on her stomach watching the movie, Erika felt more content than she had the day before, and smiled as she relaxed. Maybe this visit wouldn't be so bad after all!
Meanwhile, Lon, sitting up beside his sister, was still trying to figure out what this "burlesque" was that his family kept talking about-it involved dancing, performing, but the specifics he couldn't quite figure out. When Esmeralda began her dance at the Feast of Fools, Lon turned back to ask his great-grandmother curiously, "Is that burlesque?"
"Ah, not quite," Josephine chuckled amusedly, though she could see some similarities there, between herself and La Esmeralda: Performing flirtatious, provocative dances for an appreciative audience (with some disapproving figures in the crowd as well), being looked down on because of it, but still remaining kind despite all that? Yes, that all sounded rather familiar to her...
#((bobbie-lynn is super warm and sweet! she seems very chill; very welcoming! i knew she was doomed))#((but i was still saddened to see her get eaten by theda the gator! she was just really sweet; i liked her!))#((all she did was try to help who she thought was an old woman in need! 'no good deed goes unpunished' indeed!))#((and rj's comment about lorraine...i remember chelsea saying on the 'dead meat' podcast that her choice to join in the film))#((really forced him not only to see that women have their own desires outside of what men want))#((and that lorraine's desires might not align with his own; as well as the fact that he *is* at the end of the day))#((making an adult film for a paycheck; and not the elevated 'true cinema' vision he talks a big game about!))#((he's making that distinction between *his* girlfriend and the actresses; and when she wants to take part in it))#((it forces him to open his eyes; and it all just kinda hits him at once; and sorta overwhelms him))#((because he didn't see *his* girlfriend doing adult films like he does the other girls; it's this unspoken double standard))#((that he's forced to confront! that you can be a 'nice girl' and still have your own desires; to control your life))#((and do what you want! which to bring it back around; feels appropriate to josephine!))#((she's very nice! she's a good-natured woman who rushed to check on august when he fell out of his chair))#((and is very family-oriented; and her having done burlesque doesn't detract from that))#((anymore than it does from the girls in 'x'!))#outofhatboxes#beatingheart-bride#V:Two Worlds; One Family

I've been thinking about starting an audio engineer blog where I talk about behind the scenes editing stuff, career building advice, and more. I know I do that somewhat here already, but I'm thinking more long form, five minute read type articles. If I did something like that:
