And just to separate from my last post because it was getting way too long... Also Veilguard spoilers
specifically about my headcanon:
I think once the "sifting of the soul" which is basically just some sort of judgement ("I am come to be judged by the dead.") The Lich Lords are not the ones judging Emmrich, so I think spirits are. Greater spirits, specifically, like Keepsake and Curio, who decide if the person undertaking Lichdom is worthy enough to transcend.
Skipping the many rituals it takes to cleanse the soul, and failing that final judgement results in a half-lich. A being that apparently cannot "learn new magic." Which, I think in DA terms means they are mana-locked? It's also strangely equal to how a spirit cannot create new things... Also since Hezenkoss thought transferring her essence into a construct fueled by many other spirits would allow her to learn new magic. I wonder if there is still a limit for her then? Idk Hezenkoss throws my idea for a loop as she is arguably even more spirit like but... going back to full Liches
As to what changes of the soul... Just that it's able to go back. I think it's made into a spirit that can still retain that mortal creativity, thus retaining themselves, but still being able to return back into the bodies they had left.
The Elvenuris were made "better" by retaining their spirit and becoming more physical, (though they needed lyrium to do this.) They were then able to make new things.
I think Lichdom probably mirrors that but in slight reverse. The Liches made better by retaining their physicality but becoming more spirit.
Is Lichdom a transcendence of the soul into a complex spirit?
Because the need for so many rituals and final sifting of the soul/judgement makes sense if someone were trying to change their person into such a being.
Thematically it fits too, contrasting sharply with the Evanuris going from spirit to person...
I know there's probably not enough information on this to say for sure, but I'm rolling with this for headcanon now.

Emmrich talks about the lich lords as if they're very secretive and mysterious and far away from the public eye. But if he becomes a lich, he doesn't hide away much. There's the glamour over his skull, but the ribcage is fully out 24/7, and he doesn't always wear the glamour. But he doesn't talk about violating any rules of lichdom by doing this, so it's probably that the other lich lords just like to be mysterious and live in the shadows only to dramatically reveal themselves at opportune moments. Drama queens.

Lich Lords (1985) has a very cool recycled Frank Frazetta cover and, somewhat amusingly, an ad for the just-opened Frazetta Museum on the copyright page. This is a Role Aids adventure I often see cited as a favorite. I don’t think this one is bad, really, but I do think that the Frazetta cover predisposed a lot of people to enjoy a module that is just pretty OK instead of really frickin’ good. The back cover has a real good tag line though: “Fail and see a world…CRUSHED BY SKELETAL HANDS.”
Basically, there was once an evil city named Ool (good evil city name, tbh) rule by liches, but the gods didn’t like them, so they buried the city. After centuries, the liches are awake and their evil is seeping back into the world, so go to Ool and kill ‘em. Or, novelty: go to Ool, recruit the lesser Lich Lords to your side and with them, kill the High Lich or whatever he is called. Then betray the other liches, cuz the king who hired you wants all their crowns. Easy peasy.
The new high level magic and material on wishes amounts to a single page of forgettable text. Weirdly, this book has nothing to do with the Lich Lords portrayed in Undead a couple years later (and covered here last month).
The interiors are by Keith Berdak and David B. Bromley. Lots of good stuff, like the main lich and the demon in particular.

Cartoon Network Villains Bar
Even the bag guys need a place to unwind in between episodes. These guys are all regulars here, even if some of them often question why they come.
Would you go there if you could?

You can tell it’s about 3am and I can’t sleep because I’m lying here thinking about why offering Emmrich the chance in-game to become a Lichlord is such a fucking, stupid idea.
Luckily, the game has clad all our companions in plot armour prior to the Point of No Return but realistically, Rook would be beyond stupid to support Emmrich in becoming a Lichlord at the point it is presented to us in the game.
Emmrich is easily your most powerful ally; I’m not talking about him in the combat sense, necessarily, but in terms of what he is actually there to do for Rook. Fade expert. Ultimately, he is the one who manages to track down your point of escape from the Fade.
So why, when poised on the edge of an apocalypse, would you support him to do a ritual you know could kill him?
Imagine for a moment that DATV had the decision systems of BG3, in particular, I’m thinking about Gale’s God mechanics here, you missed something and Emmrich died as the result of the ritual. What then, particularly if that thing was ten hours of gameplay ago?
Soft locked in the Fade is the answer to that!
It’s such a high-stakes decision to put on the mortuary table. It’s not at all comparable to what the other character decisions are either. Emmrich’a decision is actual life or death. It’s mental.
Ultimately, I think if he chose to give up Manfred, the Lichlords could have been called upon for aid with Emmrich undergoing the final rites at some point after the events of the game.
And actually, that is possible to simulate in the game leaving that open to him because you just don’t finish his personal quest after deciding not to revive Manfred. So long as everyone else is levelled up, your factions are levelled up then Emmrich can survive the final battle without being having Hero of the Veilguard status (I did this with Taash in my second playthrough because I was so heartbroken by their mothers death, that roar…. Poor baby).
This post is in no way a jumping board for a bit of Emmrich/Rook angst as he nears the end of his life with the option of Lichdom still open to him… nope.

The Horned King Appreciation Post
This guy is a prime example of effective "style over substance" and a case of where a bad movie has a really solid villain.
