Magicians Settings Week: March 27 - April 2 2023
Let’s explore the wild & wonderful settings this fandom has given us! Each day will provide a choice of two settings to use as inspiration for fanworks.
DAY 1: Brakebills or a hedge safehouse (Monday, March 27th)
DAY 2: the Underworld or the Whitespire throne room (Tuesday, March 28th)
DAY 3: the Muntjac or Baba Yaga’s penthouse (Wednesday, March 29th)
DAY 4: the Neitherlands or the Library (Thursday, March 30th)
DAY 5: Antarctica or Ibiza (Friday, March 31st)
DAY 6: the cottage at the mosaic or Indiana (Saturday, April 1st)
DAY 7: free choice (Sunday, April 2nd)
How do I participate? There is no sign-up for this event; simply post your work to AO3 and add it to the  ✨Where The Magic Happens collection✨ or post on Tumblr and tag us in it.
Do I have to write fic to participate? Not at all! All types of fanwork are highly encouraged. Draw a picture, make a playlist, record a podfic, manip some fun images, write some meta – all wonderful. There are no requirements for length/size, ship or lack of ship, genre, or rating, either. Just have fun with it! Although we offer two prompts per day, you can do as many prompts as you would like. If you want to do one prompt per day, cool! If you want to do one prompt the entire week, also cool! If you want to do all the prompts, super cool! It’s completely up to you.
This event is meant to be chill. Let’s explore all the weird and wild places in this universe! The prompts are there to get the plot bunnies hopping, not make you feel like you have to write something detailed about architecture or pay a ton of attention to geography. (Let’s be real - the writers never did!) A fic that simply takes place in the setting is fine! You can focus solely on the alternative prompts, too.
Looking for more inspiration about a particular setting? Check out our resources post!
We can’t wait to see what you make!

Propaganda
The Belle Room, BoJack Horseman:
Diane tells Mr. Peanutbutter about her childhood dream of having a “Belle room” which was just the library from Beauty and the Beast and she didn’t want to actually have it she just liked being able to dream about it & that it just belonged to her. They’re about to move in to their new house though so Mr. Peanutbutter, clueless husband that he is, builds her an actual Belle room in their new house, which he fills with FIVE HUNDRED FAKE BOOKS. Understandably she gets very upset and divorces him but I like the Belle room as a symbol for how perfect happiness is inherently unattainable, and while you should keep striving for it you’re never supposed to actually get it
Study Room F, Community:
None
Hannibal's library, NBC Hannibal:
None
Abandoned and dilapidated New York Public Library, AI (2001):
Does it count as a library still if it's housing not information but thousands of identical child robots which makes sense for narrative reasons but not so much for literally any other reason someone might want?
The Black Archives, Doctor Who:
Contains so much alien stuff! And you have to have your memory wiped after every shift so I imagine it messes you up a bit
The Library aka Library of the Neitherlands, The Magicians by Lev Grossman:
Ever wanted to read your own biography, including future events? Well, too bad, that's against the rules.

the magicians s1e10
i love how the neitherlands are conveyed through spooky tilted camera angles
penny normally: >:-( penny when eve implies santa claus is real: :-o :-D
the neitherlanders are extremely interesting actually. wish we got more of them.
IF YOU WOULD JUST SHUT UP FOR TWO SECONDS THIS SEX DREAM WOULD PASS THE BECHDEL TEST QUENTIN
alice knows julia is his lifelong crush they've known each other for like three months pleaseeee
it was 1943 it wasn't a dirty thing to say back then
we just can't talk enough about eliot and margo's friendship truly i love them beyond anything
julia's online handle being vicious_circe... be mine miss wicker !!!!
the magicians, trying to convey an air of potential danger and creeping fascism in the library: so the camera is always tilted severely
free trader beowulf is one of the loveliest things in this show for the short time it exists. it's so sad.
thibadeau's planar compression. it's really not a big deal.
ALICE'S PARENTS !!!!!!!!!!! YIPPEE !!!!!!!
they are such assholes but also so fun like they're such an unexpected but sense-making part of alice's full context
zelda's pants are so yass and slay
"richard may be about forgiveness but i'm sure as shit not" as though that's not your best friend in the whole entire world kady
if my mom made me call her by her government name i would also be a little insane
i need us to spend much more time in alice's room. the butterfly artwork. the garden state soundtrack. my god.
she made him give me the version from the seventies because she thinks that kids should know what pubic hair looks like
"i'm really into damaged chicks" was about 90% of my reason for hating q the first time around
PLEASE QUENTIN IS THE WORST BOYFRIEND his limp little "oh my god" while alice is talking about family shit she's probably never in her life told anyone oh my god oh my god
i know a hundred ways to break in
ELIOT HAS TWO BOOKS
"filleted goat penis." "that's very thoughtful of you, dad."
you haven't even touched your penis!
alice's parents/joe throuple. it's a delight.
god i wanted margo to be able to deck him in the fucking face
"our friend is trapped in the neitherlands" "...acquaintance"
stephanie, this one DOES seem like an awful lot of work. which is why it works for eliot and not alice.
don't take this the wrong way mom but shut the fuck up okay <3
margolem is evil i think he should've been killed for that
"sometimes the only thing we do is spoon" "UGH"
shitty boyfriend q episode of all time where's that post about his internalized heterophobia
julia using "kludgy" she is a megadweeb
as i always do i love that the magicians as a show just kind of shrugs and says all gods. yes all gods. they're real.
ELIOT NEVER GETS TO OPEN UP
did margo have sex with the margolem yes/yes
"i like you a lot and i don't know why" is not what you say when you're interested in men i don't think
bite me.......................

Note
There are SO many good librarians and archivists so I'm not at all surprised how quickly the bracket filled up, but I'd like to send some love to Zelda Schiff, Head Librarian and member of the Governing Council of the Order of the Library of the Neitherlands from the Magicians!
Does she always do the right thing? No! Is she always a good mom? No! Is she badass and cool as hell? Yes!
She was a hedge witch and wasn't formally educated and yet still became head librarian and does magic and believes in the mission of the library above all else, to collect and save information and knowledge which is extremely awesome of her
All in all, I love her your honor
She sounds awesome!

Journal Entry 3: Days 50 - 75 (Neitherlands/The Library)
It’s been a few days since I escaped Fillory to the Neitherlands, I went through a Clock Tree. Came out the Fillory fountain. Josh Hoberman, a Brakebills third year, escaped with me. The Beast, seems Fillory is plagued by his tyranny and suffering for it. He took my travelling away. I’m stuck here.
It’s been weeks, Josh has settled down, waiting for someone that may never come. I’ve been mapping the fountains, looking for Earth.
The Library, they say if I sign a contract for a millenium, I get my travelling back. How could I say no. I'm a Traveler.

"I didn't insist." Penny says as he looks down at the maze, contrary to the truth of it those words. He did insist on going, but it definitely wasn't because he wanted to. He never wanted to do half the shit they had to do in this place. Like waltzing through some Hedge Maze to talk to a rebellious tribe of some kind of half-faeries with a grudge against the High King and Queen.
But being here in Fillory, working with two of the only people he could call a friend, is far better than being out there, where the Library could find him. He looks up at Eliot then, seeing that look on his face that says 'I know you're bullshitting me,' and he rolls his eyes with a shake of his head.
"Okay, maybe I insisted." He admits, looking back down. "More like Margo insisted. Figured you'd be safer with a Traveler with you."
As Penny looks down at the maze for a moment more, a deep frown forms on his lips. Mazes weren't his thing, not since that first time in the Neitherlands. Getting lost was the worst fear of a Traveler, and he'd experienced being lost enough in his life.
"You first."
Tumblr media
@pennyinyourthoughts sent one slip and i'm falling back into the hedge maze. - to Eliot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Don't be dramatic." He glances down at said hedge maze, it's a long way down but Eliot doesn't think they'll slip. If he had known this was going to be in the way of getting to the other side, to meet with people (creatures?) who seem to have an issue with how Fillory is being ruled, he would have sent someone in his steed and make them come to him.
Annoying, really.
"I'm not going to let you fall. You're the one who insisted coming with me." He didn't have to, Eliot's perfectly capable of navigating negotiations and hedge mazes on his own.

I can't be the only one who wants to know the history of the Posion Room? I mean, what the hell happened to that entire world and the inhabitants? As much as I despise the Library, I would kill for the opportunity to browse their stacks.

Stealing a Book Titled Quentin Coldwater
Tumblr media
This art and story are for the Day 4 prompt, "The Library," of Where the Magic Happens: Magicians Settings Week. I completed the basic drawing but will paint and finish the art after Settings Week. The story is finished. (Though I may want to write a sequel!)
Stealing a Book Titled Quentin Coldwater (1704 words) by EliotQueliot Chapters: 1/1 Fandom: The Magicians (TV) Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Warnings: Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings Relationships: Quentin Coldwater/Eliot Waugh, Margo Hanson & Eliot Waugh, Quentin Coldwater & Margo Hanson Characters: Eliot Waugh, Quentin Coldwater, Margo Hanson, Julia Wicker, 40th Timeline William "Penny"Adiyodi, 23rd Timeline William "Penny" Adiyodi, Alice Quinn (The Magicians), Kady Orloff-Diaz Additional Tags: queliot, The Library of the Neitherlands (The Magicians), Theft, Books, True Love, Grief/Mourning, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Canonical Character Death, Character Death Fix, Quentin Coldwater Lives
Summary: Eliot—hadn't been able to bear it one more day. One afternoon at three p.m. when Bambi asked him if he wanted to speak to her about Quentin—he just broke. Finally.
Notes:
This is canon divergent from midway through 5x01, "Do Something Crazy." The point of divergence is the scene in which Margo says, "On that note, it's three o'clock, when I usually ask you if you'd like to talk about Quentin."
The story is a meditation by Eliot on the experience of stealing Quentin's book. There's a fix-it element inasmuch as Eliot's reason for doing so is to bring Q back. If one were to assume, based on my mission as a Queliot writer, that this piece has a happy ending off-screen, one would not be wrong :)

whoever made the choice on this one, it was definitely a deliberate one and something they liked enough to keep consistent between s1 & s4. this is from 1x10 when penny first discovers the neitherlands library:
Tumblr media
i read it more as a ‘interesting guy who just kinda does more stuff than others’ especially with it being included in s1, but still nice to think about the reasons behind it being a very specific, repeated choice
You want to hear something about Eliot Waugh that to my knowledge nobody’s ever brought up before?  In The Bad News Bear (4x03), while Alice is trying to escape from the Library with her friends’ books so that the Library can’t trace them, she finds a note with a list of the books that have been “removed from circulation pending revisions.”  Everyone’s name is listed in the same format, First Initial Last Name – Q. Coldwater, A. Quinn, etc.
The only name listed differently is E. Waugh, which is followed by Vol – presumably a volume number.  Now, we don’t see the actual number of the volume because Alice’s thumb is covering it, but nobody else even has a volume notation, which I guess would have to means that everyone else has one book while specifically only Eliot has a book that comes in multiple volumes.
I mean, that’s interesting, right!?  At this point in Eliot’s life story, he doesn’t seem to have any more previous history than anyone else, so I’m going out on a limb to guess that if they’re all single-volume people, the volume he’s operating out of now is Volume One. So what’s the implication here?  It can’t be related to the Mosaic timeline, or Quentin would have multiple volumes as well.  It can’t be related to the time loops, because everyone was in those.  It almost has to be that to the best of the Library’s knowledge, Eliot is expected to live much longer than any of the rest of them, which is just – fucking wild, right?
I mean, I’m open to alternative readings, but whatever you want to make of it, it’s just a bonkers choice for someone – the props department? The director? The writers? – to make, and today it’s fascinating me.
