10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing

New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas

If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas: 

1. Sprained Ankle

A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.

2. Rib Contusion

A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.

3. Concussions

This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a character’s judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.

I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.

4. Fractured Finger

A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.

5. Road Rash

Road rash is an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.

6. Shoulder Dislocation

This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.

7. Deep Laceration

A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.

This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.

8. Burns

Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.

9. Pulled Muscle

This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.

10. Tendonitis

Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.

This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

Viktor just went from being some guy to my all time favourite Arcane character. Funniest possible direction they could’ve gone with him. Every fuck in his mind body soul was spent and gone when he emerged from that goop. Woke up purple from a near death experience and immediately dumped his situationship, quit his job, fucked off to the undercity wearing nothing but a blanket and then became the second coming of Christ on accident. Man, I've mulled over the similarities between Ansbach and Jerren -- both aged warriors, one seeking to avenge his fallen lord's dignity while the other looks to lay his own to rest with honor intact. And both Radahn and Mohg were robbed of that.

"... Lord Mohg will have his dignity."

"... A grand festival of war will be held in your honor... You will have your dignity, my general - my lord."

I wonder if something similar could be said of Varré and Freyja, beyond them wearing masks?

That's a good question, I do believe there are interesting differences between Ansbach and Varré. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of information regarding Varré, he's quite mysterious cause his questline is pretty uninteresting. It had a mechanical purpose rather than lore purpose (since you had to invade other players at first.)

One of the things to take into consideration is Freyja was a Redmane before Radahn was struck with Scarlet Rot. With Varré, it's unclear if Mohg had been charmed or not. I'm leaning towards believing Mohg was bewitched at the time Mohgwyn Dynasty started crumbling.

I think there are similarities among Varré and Freyja, but it's a bit different. Varré's main purpose is to anoint Tarnished, meanwhile Freyja uhh, idk tackling her dyslexia. Freyja served her purpose, she's living in the past somewhat, meanwhile Varré is currently with the Mohg he became a companion to. They also presumably die around the same time, it's really unclear.

TL;DR they are quite similar in the way you had "old companion and new underpaid intern." Freyja is more outspoken what she believes is right for Radahn, meanwhile Varré works unpaid overtime.

I don't think a game has ever made me feel as physically ill as elden ring did when I found out about how Miquella was using Mohg. 

I always had a sneaking suspicion that Mohg's obsession with Miquella had something to do with his charming ability, but never really had much more than a hunch to go off of.

Finding out that that hunch was not only correct, but also how much deeper the rabbit hole went made me feel genuinely sick. He didn’t just charm Mohg, he somehow used him to gain access to the land of shadow, abandoned him and then stole his still warm corpse to desecrate into an entirely different form to house the soul of the consort he actually wanted.

Mohg doesn’t even get a footnote in his little “thank you” speech at the gate of divinity. To him, we were more impactful in his plans coming to fruition for inadvertently delivering Radahn’s soul to him than the person who got him into the land of shadow in the first place. The person who died to become the vessel of his king consort.

I don't know why this part of the game specifically had me feeling so disgusted, it's not really something I can explain. There's just something about this character that was put on such a high pedestal by the world around him, and who has received unconditional love throughout his entire life, weaponizing that very same love against someone that probably struggled with it for most of his life and used it to manipulate, take advantage of and isolate him.

And then when one of his knights comes looking for justice, for the freedom of his master, Miquella just charms him too, burying his memories of his devotion to his lord and stealing him for his own followers.

He stripped Mohg of absolutely everything and used him for his own gain until the very end and beyond. For me, Miquella’s age of compassion died the moment he decided doing that was acceptable.

i saw this art on the hellsite that was a really good idea and so well designed. it was the seven deadly sinse with ER characters. more specifically, demigods, except... Fia was lust. and i was weirdly bummed out by that. i dont think she represents lust at all, and it was very random to have her be the 1 non-demigod in the group. the sex she has is not coming from a place of lust, it comes from a place of subservience and duty. its the opposite of lust, it's perfunctory. i hate this word bc of how the internet has made it near meaningless, but, it comes from a place of being groomed and conditioned, forced into a role she never asked for and was born into. so it felt like both a misapplication and a missed opportunity, because there IS a demigod who DOES represent lust quite well and his name is mohg.

mohg actively lusts after miquella, desiring to become his consort and offering his own blood to him, stealing and coveting him. he's so blind with his desire for miquella, he sooner seems to think we are there for MIQUELLA than his great rune! ("miquella is mine and mine alone" on player kill). He lusts after a reality where he is beloved and can share his maladjusted brand of love with others. he takes without consent, repeatedly, not just miquella but his war surgeons, and maybe even his bloody fingers(do they know theyre going to be driven mad by the cessblood when they take it? it's not like varre gives us any warnings about how it might affect us). the lack of love in mohg's life has so clearly effected how he expresses it himself. he's known SO much pain that when a mother who comes to him acknowledging that pain and telling him the suffering is not pointless but is in fact the key to truth and love, both things mohg has been denied all his life, of course he takes to it. of course he agrees and wants to share that 'love' with others, and wants them to 'love' him back. mohg's lust is in turns twisted and tragic and pitiable and hideous, so it's very compelling compared to anything you could use to connect fia with lust. OTHERS may lust after fia, but she doesn't use that as a weapon. she presents herself as someone for others to trust and confide in, and doesn't use sex to do that, but her words and praise. the only one SHE comes anywhere near lusting for is godwyn. but she doesn't lust for him, she CARES for him. she wants to help him, but her tools are limited and so she uses the ones she has, the ones she has been raised with, taking the role she was assigned against her will and reshaping it into something she finds fulfilling. it isn't lust that drives her to godwyn, it's a desire for freedom, for self-determination, and it's care for others who have been similarly outcast by the world the same way she has by her own country.

idk. it just felt reductive and ruined the whole piece for me. it was very great art otherwise so hopefully no one takes this as me like shaming the artist for their choices. everyone has different visions for stuff. just having thoughts, on my blog.
