Update on the Situation of LGBTQ Refugees in the Rainy Season🙏🏳️‍🌈

Hello everyone,

I want to take a moment to give you a quick update on what’s happening with our LGBTQ refugee community. Right now, we’re in the middle of the rainy season, and it’s been raining for almost seven hours each day. These heavy rains are causing devastating floods that not only seep into our temporary homes but often dismantle them entirely.

As you can see from the pictures , the rain gets everywhere soaking every belonging we have and sometimes sweeping them away altogether. The situation is incredibly dire, and with nowhere to turn, it feels like an endless battle just to stay dry and safe.

These conditions have made it even easier for diseases like malaria, cholera, and typhoid to spread. We desperately need stronger, more reliable tents to provide shelter. Each tent can accommodate at least 15 people and costs around $350 to $400.

We are pleading with well-wishers and the global LGBTQ community to stand with us during this incredibly difficult time. Your support could make a world of difference in protecting our lives and giving us the dignity of a safe space to weather this storm.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people in Kenya face significant challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Sodomy is prohibited in Kenya, punishable by 21 years' imprisonment, and any sexual practices (termed "gross indecency") are a felony of the same statute, punishable by 5 years' imprisonment. On 24 May 2019, the High Court of Kenya refused an order to declare same sex marriage. The state does not recognise any relationships between persons of the same sex; same-sex marriage is banned under the Kenyan Constitution since 2010. There are no explicit protections against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. Adoption is restricted to heterosexual couples only.

Expressions of homosexuality are illegal under Kenyan statutes and carry a maximum penalty of 14 years' imprisonment to 21 years in certain aggravating circumstances. Sex acts between women are mentioned under the gender-neutral term person and are enforced equally. Indeed, Prime Minister Raila Odinga in November 2010 called on for them to be arrested along with gay men.

LGBTQ migrants "asylum seeker and refugees" living in Kenya and continue to be at risk since the host community has stood firm on their decision to eliminate whoever practicing sodomy as stated.

Hello friends, my name is kavuma Abdallah a refugee here in Africa and I need your love, help and support.

In 2020 , I left my home country and ran to Kenya to seek asylum as the community had turned against me because of my sexuality.

In Kenya, I got registered as an asylum seeker and then brought to the kakuma refugee camp but the situation was never easy for me as my fellow refugees who were homophobic attacked me several times.

At the end of 2023, I left Kenya as my life was in great danger and I went to a neighbouring country. In this new country, I struggle to get food and other necessities since I can't be hired because of my sexuality and I request you to help me survive this situation.
