Part of the reason why the leverage crew works so well together is because they are all varying degrees of theater kids but only Sophie is willing to admit it.
#you can teach someone to be a better actor but they’ve got to have the ability to act in the first place#I’m actually convinced that if you ever found someone who went to school with Eliot you’d find out he was in the spring musical#leverage#sophie devereaux#nate ford#parker leverage#alec hardison#eliot spencer

I haven't seen any posts about this yet but l've seen some fan art that makes me feel this needs to be said:
Don't forget Leah Sava Jeffries has darker skin when making Annabeth Chase fan art!
She is much closer to Lupita Nyong'o than Zoe Kravitz when it comes to shading, reflection, and complementary color usage :).
Lighting for dark skin is different on light skin. Light skin gets changed by lighting, and dark skin reflects the lighting. Below is a lovely shot of Nyong'o's character from Wakanda Forever in mourning. The filmmakers emphasize the umber qualities of her skin in contrast to the funereal white and (arguably harsh) light across her shoulder below.
Try to pick spots that aren't directly in or near the light, and try mixing 3 or more! You can put it into a color mixer online, or even color pick, lower the opacity, and lay the shades over each other until you find one that fits. And of course, the more 'realistic' you want to go with shading and lighting, the more shades you're going to want to be able to explore vivaciously :D.
Let's take a look at the same 3 beautiful actresses I mentioned at the beginning, with a bad color picked area and a better-ish color picked area. (Please keep in mind, these are not perfect comparisons, as I was not able to find pictures of all 3 actresses under the same kind of lighting.)
Kravitz's has a clear difference between the two, but they aren't too far apart, in comparison to Nyong’o’s and Jeffries’s. Note the dullness in the poorly picked shades as opposed to the better ones. Also keep in mind that while Kravitz has a rosy undertone (at least in that picture - it’s from The Batman, which has stylized coloring) Nyong’o has a slight cool undertone (I can’t pin down quite what, but the picture is definitely not stylized like Kravitz’s).
Jeffries runs more ochre or russet, but neither of those are pink. They are more red than terracotta or umber, but to call Jeffries’s face rosy would be wrong. Err more towards the golden when drawing her.
^^saved an image from a writing tutorial long ago, but can’t seem to find it. If someone recognizes it, I’ll link it. EDIT: it’s from this post. Thanks @autumnrowancollector ! <3
And also, the darker skin gets, the less likely warm undertones are going to appear. Don't be afraid to use blue or purple or even green on occasion!
Additionally, cool lighting on dark skin is always a win imo.
(I was going to use that picture of Jeffries as Annabeth by the lightning bolt, but then I realized the lighting on her face doesn’t quite match up with where it should hit from that angle, and I realized they kind of just turned everything bluer, so screenshot time!)
(Also if you want another really great live action example, check out anything Aldis Hodge is in, like Leverage and Black Adam)(and of course there’s Spiderverse <3 but I want to post pictures of Hodge)
Now, to here’s a list of more experienced people’s advice:
Black facial features & hair
Shading digitally for a (somewhat) monotone Black character
Stylistic choices and places to start looking for inspiration (besides a search engine).
Coloring Black people’s lips
A better coloration tutorial
Also a nice tutorial for Indigenous skin tones, just in case yall want to draw Piper or use this information for other dark skinned characters :).
EDIT: Some actresses who are closer in skintone to use for Annabeth, provided by the lovely @blackfemmecharacterdependency ! If you can’t find a reference for Jeffries in a specific lighting, maybe check out these ladies’ pictures! It’s a reblog, so scroll down.
TLDR: Don’t make Annabeth pink and pale, make her dark and golden.
#Annabeth chase#Percy Jackson#percabeth#leah sava jeffries#pjo#leah jeffries#art tutorial#percy jackon and the olympians#I love superheroes and so of course all of the actors I thought of were from superhero movies lmao#also for the record my advice is mostly from reading others’ tutorials and observation#and I don’t really use it a lot because I stick to lineart a lot lol#like down to mentioning Hodge (love himmmm) as a reference for good lighting on dark skin#there’s another post floating around here that specifically mentions him and Leverage for that#I’m tagging this as an art tutorial but really i want it to be more of a master post#master post so yall can see the tutorials I usually use#but then I ended up writing about Jeffries specifically because I’m dumb#I wanted to go to sleep four hours ago I’m dumb#I really want to draw her and ginger Percy but#irl it’s starting to get busy at school again :/

Okay- but...
Has anyone else noticed that at least with Dean Devlin- Christian Kanes characters all have some sort of ties to each other?
I mean:
Eliot Spencer; A military bred, mercenary trained, with multiple aliases- with a specific skill set, con-artist.
Jacob Stone; An art historian, with multiple aliases, genius brain, eidetic memory (?), librarian.
Alex Walker; con-artist, with multiple aliases, an eye for detail, retired giftshop owner.
The characters might not be the same but there still enough for them to be long lost triplets or something.
#leverage#the librarians#almost paradise#eliot spencer#jake stone#alex walker#at least in the dean delvin universe christian kanes characters all have to have multiple aliases#does anybody else find that odd?#almost like they want to do a crossover#long lost triplets#yes I know I'm stretching#but come on#your gonna tell me eliot jake and alex all have particular skills that#and not think they're related?#im also well aware that they are played by one actor#just-work with me here#mini rant about christan kane#this is what I get for trying to come up with a crossover

the thing about nate ford is he’s unpleasant, unlikeable, and uninteresting. but his importance to the other core four, his relationships with them and the way he helps them grow, is SO GOOD.
#and killing him off only made that all the more compelling#leverage#Nate could be SO GOOD#but between t hutton s odd acting#and weird writing choices#he just wasn’t#emily and i often talk about different casting choices that could’ve made him better#funniest choice was fred armisen#other choices were peter krause and hugh laurie#laurie would’ve just been a really actor and able to sell what the writers intended#and with krause it’s that bobby nash is what nate ford wishes he was#which is why i have a 911 leverage au that haunts me unfinished

The first thing that came to my mind when I saw this picture was : a team of heroes and/or villains.
Then my mind went "I have an awesome idea for a fic you will never write!!! This team as a Thai version of Leverage"
Now my brain going in circle to decide who is who and what to do with Noeul.
At the moment, my idea is :
Peat as the mastermind
Fort as the con artist
Boss as the brawn with hidden depth
Chanya as the incredible thief that can blend in every crowd
Aya as the computer genius
Chanya could also be a great con artist thanks to her fluency in 3 languages.
For Noeul, I'm leaning towards the doctor who keeps having to deal with their crazy asses or their legal specialist.
Maybe it is the idea that will awaken my muse and push to write again. But if anyone wants to play with this idea, please do.

I like how it seems Beth Riesgraf (Parker) made a really wild impression on the Leverage creators, executive producers & network, from all the interviews...
Leverage Cast: S4 Behind The Scenes - Auditions
Beth Riesgraf: I left the [audition] room and it was one of those moments where you go down to your car and something clicks, and you really get something that you didn’t get in the room. So I walked back up and they’re like "well, he’s got about five more people to see" so I was like "oh, awesome". So I waited. John comes out of the room and I’m like [suddenly very animated] "hi! so listen!" and by the time I was done, I had him like this [grabs Timothy Hutton, who’s seated next to her, by his lapels with both hands] and I didn’t even realise, but I got so excited that I was like "no no no, just let me do it again!" and John was like, "no no no, I think you’re fine I think you got it. I think you got the character".
LA Screening Q&A with Devlin, Rogers & Downey
Dean Devlin: Fun story with Parker is that there were two actresses who came in for the final reading for the studio. And one of the two actresses - beautiful girl, very competent actor, very good […]. But after she left, we turned to the people at the network and we said, "she’s great, we like her - this next girl’s the girl we’d really like to hire. She’s not kind of the typical girl you’d normally hire in a show like this". So then Beth [Riesgraf] came in for the audition. Didn’t say one word. Just came in- John Rogers: None of this "hi, I’m here", yeah. Dean: She just read in character, and then walked out of the room. At which point the head of TNT turned to me and said, [whispering] "is she… crazy?". [normal voice] I said, "I don’t know, but I love her". John: Her hair was in her face, remember? She came in and did like, the crazy, angry, just-hates-everyone Parker.
The way these link up so well is so funny to me & it gives such a hilarious picture of the Parker audition process.
#leverage#beth riesgraf#parker leverage#john rogers#dean devlin#wren speaks#leverageposting#in summary -#riesgraf: yeah i probably made a weird first impression oops#devlin & rogers: she made a weird first impression so we brought her in again. and she was weird again. so obviously we hired her#i do hate when ppl call parker crazy but then these are the same ppl who made the ep where parker says she *was never crazy* (white rabbit)#so ig they dont Mean It Like That. & they also call her 'broken' but never mean it as 'she needs to be Made Neurotypical' or that shes#missing something in that way. but rather that the world has hurt her & that she needs her found family & that she gets to heal.#plus theyre saying riesgraf seemed crazy here too and im sure they dont mean to offend their actors either lol. so yk. botd.

was thinking about leverage dnd classes and i think the obvious choice for sophie is bard, but i don't think that's quite right, because her whole thing is that she's NOT a very good actor. she's not an Artist, she's a grifter. i think one of the reasons why sophie struggles with acting is because then the goal is art/self-expression/a desire to communicate with and be seen by the world (something she has a whole crisis about) while the goal of grifting more readily aligns with her own (facilitating a con). like bards are ultimately a class that's about supporting/"inspiring" others through creative endeavors (getting stronger by improving your craft), while other charisma casters like warlocks are about power and ambition (getting stronger by selling your soul); but i think sophie's talents are closest to those of sorcerers, whose powers are more innate and something to be learned to be controlled. sophie's struggle isn't that she's not good enough at her job, but that maybe she's TOO good at it to the point she doesn't know who she is, and that her powers may in fact hurt others. if anything, she's a sorcerer carrying around a lute and charming her audience into clapping for her when her performance flops
#like i imagine (and this might be contradicted by canon) that a younger sophie went 'well i'm good at lying. i should be an actor!'#except that good acting requires you to tell the truth to some degree. yknow?#i think sophie's one of the last characters i'm still calibrating but i'm getting there#anyways the character that's closest to a bard is in fact hardison because his motivation is to connect with others and belong#which is part of the contradiction at the heart of the bard class! unfortunately he is also just a wizard.#no subclasses or multiclassing here we're all about the CORE CHARACTER DILEMMA here#parker's a rogue (balancing independence and the need for a team)#hardison's a wizard (need to always get better at your Thing in case you are Not Good Enough)#eliot's a barbarian (wrestling with and learning to control/harness your innate power)#nate's a cleric (subclass: ex-catholic) (crisis of faith/morality. struggle with temptation. etc.)#leverage lb#sophie devereaux#leverageposting

Round 2B.7
Propaganda under the cut
Sophie: "The world's greatest conwoman. Absolutely dreadful actress."
"Incredibly talented grifter (aka the actor of the crime world) who is also an actress on the side. The only thing tho is she's Really Bad at acting if she isn't trying to con someone. Also I love her."
"She's team mom, maybe low-key royalty, flirts with every man ever, opens her own acting school. She can do any accent, portray any personality type, pull off any outfit. But god help if you put her on an actual stage if she isn't trying to to steal from someone along the way"
