Asmo Appreciation Week, Day 2: Best Cards, Part 1!

Welcome back, everyone!

So...Obey Me's cards, eh? Some are good, some are not-so-good, some send people into screaming frenzies, some send others into...other types of screaming frenzies.

When it comes to Asmo and his cards, I take it seriously. Since 2021, I've had a goal of collecting every card the game has released of him, and it's actually going pretty well. The same applies with Nightbringer; last night I put many stockpiled D-Energy cans to good use and grinded enough to get his UR+ achievable from the Hard Ruri Tunes missions!

Which leads me to today's topic: which of the lusty boy's cards do I think is the best?

It took so much strength to pick. And in the end, I couldn't choose just 5, just 7, or even just 10. Nope, I'm going all out and showing my TOP 20 cards! Because Tumblr has a limit on how many images can be used in a single post, today I'm going to be revealing the first half of the cards, from #20-#11, with the top 10 coming very soon.

A couple of things before I start. I did not include any of the NB-exclusive cards in this list, as those three I want to save for another day. And two, I am not basing my ranking on any of the Devilgrams attached to the cards, as some of them I have yet to obtain. I may mention them for some that I do own, but the basis of these ranking is on the art of the cards, the theming included, and meaningful context around its release. Lastly, all of the images here were found on the fandom's unofficial card-logging site, Karasu-OS.

Anyway, let's begin!

To start with, I have a couple of honorable mentions that just barely missed the cutoff:

HM 1: HLD, the New Dream Team! (Toys event SSR)

That event with the onesies was definitely one of the more chaotic ones, that's for sure. And while it's not one of my favorite sets, I always liked Asmo's pink bunny outfit. It's so floppy and derp that I can't help but smile.

HM 2: Memories and Pale Shades (Cursed Seed SSR)

This event...oh boy. Remember when I said that release context played a part in my ranking? This is one where it's a bit clear. The art and composition is beautiful, being fed a dango and admiring the blossoming trees, but the circumstances that this card came out in spoiled a bit of the joy it would normally have. Still, the positives still weighed out enough for it to land here with a good word.

Now then, on to the list!

#20: Party Hopping

It's cards like this that get the wheels in my brain turning. A funny thing about cards is that their image sometimes doesn't match the Devilgram attached or even the event or Nightmare entirely. Even without having the card in my possession (yet), cards like this let my imagination run wild in terms of what is happening in the image. Why is Asmo dressed like Little Red Riding Hood? Why is he crying? Did he come from a party? Did something happen before or after it? The card itself is simple, but allows for lots of mental creativity.

#19: Asmo Gives Back <3

This one unfortunately got held back by the initial design of the card. For some reason, that blue suit of his just irks me... But the unlocked DF version makes up for it in spades. For as much of a party animal Asmo is described to be, we don't see him much in any kind of club or bar setting with the works attached in art. This card remedied that, showing him flushed and happily drinking away, clothes rustled around and overall giving proof of a good time for his special day.

#18: Illuminating My Love

This is an example of simplicity reigning supreme. Both of the card versions don't have anything special with outfits, just casual and demon forms, but it's the actions that hit it in the feels for me. Small lights, whether it be from fairy lights or tiny candles, bring a sense of warmth to both of the card arts. And considering these were released for Devil Day '22, warmth and love are the perfect things to feel when it comes to these.

#17: Asmos and the Fox Mask?

Much like #19, this is one where one design makes up for another, but this time for a different reason. I'll admit I wasn't the biggest fan of the yokai-style theming the DF unlock was attached to, but that is mainly just personal preference. The initial art given though? AMAZING. This is the start of where theming starts to be a basis for why I like a card, and to start it off, I LOVE masquerade balls. And this be one of many cards you see where Asmo is wearing a dress, get used to it.

#16: The Annoying Influencer

Another type of simplistic card, but this one gets bonus points for bringing ALL the color, enough that some may find it a bit annoying (eh? get it? I'll stop). Another birthday card, it warms my heart whenever I see images of Asmo enjoying a treat or any food in general. One of the tropes thrown around a lot involves him going on diets often to keep his figure, so to see him openly enjoying snacks he likes (especially here, with his favorite Surprise Guest item!) will always make me just a bit happier.

#15: A Gorgeous Phantom Thief

There was a time when I adored the Phantom Thief and Detective trope in stories, a sort of cat-and-mouse game, if you will. Also usually having a Tuxedo Mask-esque aesthetic about them, it always felt like you were on the edge of your seat, waiting for what would happen next. And while this is another card that I don't own as of now, I can still imagine the picture in my head of this lovely man wanting to steal every rare diamond and gem in existence, but the one thing he can't seem to take so easily is your heart.

#14: Looking at Someone

WHY DID THIS CARD NIGHTMARE HAVE TO BE SO SHORT?! Outside of the screaming, this is one of the cards I would be ecstatic to own, if only the circumstances on its release weren't so daunting with no re-release in sight. But even so, it's another example of simplicity being all you need. Asmo surrounded one of his most iconic motifs, makeup as far as the eye can see with a relaxed look on his face is really all I need when it comes to this card.

#13: Asmo and a Treasure Chest

Both of these images, the themes, expressions..."shoot through my heart" indeed... While pirates aren't my favorite universe to dabble into (similar to yokai in terms of preference), the two art features given to this card of the same thing go beyond my choices and SLAY me. Double revolvers on the initial, and...THIS...on the DF unlock? Oh anyone in the three realms take me now!

#12: That Special Someone

Oh the nostalgia! Even if it's only 4 years ago, the initial set of cards will always be special to me, and this particular initial UR is no exception. It was definitely a tricky sucker to get, taking me almost THREE YEARS to get lucky in Chapter A, and it still remains part of some of my best teams to this day. And the theming gives another combination of fitting the character (you can't expect someone with their own private bathroom to NOT have a shot of themselves in the tub), and my own secret tastes (self-care and beauty elements are addictive to me).

#11: Catch the Lost Bunnies!

Rounding out the first half is the inverse of the following card. Instead of taking nearly three years, this sucker came home on a FREE single pull! I have never had better luck on that gacha since then, and I'm glad it came from this lovely card. Bunnies and rabbits are Asmo's secondary animal motif (the primary being scorpions), and combining this with the bunny boy event happening at the same time, it's just a celebration of two different kinds of cuties! I wanna cuddle them both!

And with that, I have to hold the breaks. But don't worry, soon we'll go through the second half, the top 10 of the bunch. Which cards can top these? Have any guesses?

I genuinely wish it were possible to scroll through the kyman tag for more than five minutes without encountering hate. Like, I hey people being uncomfortable with the ship and disliking it, but they don't have to go out of their way to be mean and tag their hate? I find it kind of funny when it's people like the guys who made the microceleb au who say the most demented vile shit on a daily basis (cool, it's south park) but are so childishly malicious and prudish about kyman? Like, this is south park tumblr, we are all in the circus together

i know right :( honestly... i dont wanna get into ship morality discourse, but my general thought on that is we've strayed far too far from a good ol 'this thing squicks me out, im gonna avoid it and focus on what i like' mentality. remember 'dont like, dont read' from the fanfic dot net days? we need that back. i have a handful of ships that make me very deeply uncomfortable - yknow what i do? i block the tag and i dont think about it ever bc its not worth my time. maybe if i run into smth ill complain in private, but im not gonna waste time policing other ppl's fandom experience when there's much more important stuff going on in the world. i think problematic ship discourse is one of the silliest, most chronically online things in the world. like you said - it's south park, greg. fandom is meant to be a fun hobby, and a lot of people have turned it into a miserable and extremely puritan lifestyle. curate ur fandom experience, keep it fun, dont dwell on negative bullshit . best advice i can give.

as for this microceleb au thing, i had to google it cuz i have no idea what the hell ur talkin abt fsdjkfd. i am so fantastically out of loop w the sp fandom - and thank g-d, honestly. im still fond of south park and cartman & kyman are still in my all-time fav characters + ships, but as a south park fandom veteran, lemme tell you - this is one of the most... bizarre fandoms ive been in, let's say that. i was gonna say worst, but that's simply not true, because there's a lot of really great talent and i have a tremendous amount of respect and fondness for a lot of rlly wonderful creative artists n writers ive had the pleasure of knowing. but there's like... a culture thats specific to the sp fandom, thats just a bit... rancid. my sp fixation seems to be recurrent, but if i ever come back im gonna tread the fandom carefully cuz its just very easy to get sucked into nonsense. but that being said, i havent been active in it for a few years now. might be totally different now. doesnt fully sound like it, though

Hanako:

The type to try and distract you from what you need to do.

Absolutely is gonna make sure that you're not stressed over school work. He's a bit dumb but he can still help you get it done quickly.

Probably coaxes you into taking like half hour naps during studying so you don't overwork yourself.

He's mostly just going to be there to watch over you to make sure you pace yourself correctly.

He's not letting you overwork yourself on his watch, there's no possible way.

Asks the mokke to come and distract you/help relax you if you're stressing yourself out too badly over some work you're doing

He makes the mokke massage your hands if they're ever feeling sore, he doesn't know how to properly and he doesn't want to rick hurting you more.

He's caring and attentive and he's not gonna let you ruin your mental state over some words on paper or a computer.

Yashiro:

The BEST at hand massages, no doubts here.

She'll sit there for hours and just gently massage into your hands until you tell her to stop or fall asleep.

Gets whatever you need when you ask. You need some snacks? She's got some in her bag. You need an ice pack for your hands? No worries, she comes back 2 minutes later with a ice pack and a hot hands that she had. Everything you could ever need is with her.

Helps you work through your work, whether it be school work or a creative stump you're in.

Sits right next to you when you're working, she wants you to know that she'll always be there when you need her.

RAMBLES, she rambles and rambles and rambles. If you're the type of person who needs background noise, she will keep talking about whatever she wants for hours.

It's interesting, yeah, but when you have such nice company and the background noise of someone speaking, it just lets you breeze through whatever you're doing.

Also makes you take breaks, but this time it's cuddle breaks.

She will literally shove her way into your lap and demand you take a break and hold her until you can refocus on what you're doing.

10/10 best company to have around.

Kou

Honestly, he's not the best for company when you're focused or sore. Even worse if it's both.

He's like a 5-year-old with intense ADHD, he can't sit still for more than a few hours. He gets restless.

Make you take outdoor breaks from your work. You get to breathe in some fresh, not stale, air and he gets to run around outside for a bit to replenish his sitting still energy.

He always has food and drinks with him wherever he goes, so don't assume you'd be going hungry.

He hears your stomach growl once and he's all over you, asking when was the last time you ate, what he had on him, what you wanted, ect ect. He's not letting you out of his sight until he watches you eat and drink something.

Amazing at hand massages. Not as good as Yashiro, but he had to learn how to ease hand pains when he was learning how to wield his staff as a weapon.

He also carries all types of ointments for just about anything, especially sore hands. He's always running around and getting banged up so he has to be careful and prepared.

Likes to hold your hand while you work if you can. He'll sit next to you, silent and content, as he slowly massages your palm and almost coaxes you to sleep right there. Almost.

A-Activities (what do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?)

- thoma enjoys pretty much any type of shared activities with you, but ultimately his favorite kind is any that involves food. he'll go on tours of inazuma city with you to find the best places to get ice cream, or he'll buy a whole bunch of food and see what kind of dishes you can make together! nine times out of ten it ends up being really weird and a little gross, but it's fun and he loves spending time with you.

B-Beauty (what do they admire about their s/o? what do they think is beautiful about them?)

- he admires your ambition, your humor, and your own personal flair. he loves the person you are, and almost everything that goes into that, but he specifically loves the unique little traits that make you you.

C-Comfort (how would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?)

- his first instinct is to give you a big hug or rub your back, but only if he knows you're okay with it and that it would actually help. his first goal is to make sure you're okay, and then his second goal is to cheer you up: with bad jokes and kisses, usually

D-Dreams (how do they picture the future with their s/o?)

- thoma isn't super picky with how you two end up in the future, as long as you're together and happy. he wants to grow old with you, ideally, though however you do that will decide itself.

E-Equal (are they the dominant one in the relationship or rather passive?)

- thoma is used to taking the lead in your relationship, but he's not necessarily more dominant or anything - he's just excited to be with you and wants to make sure you're just as happy as he is. your relationship is pretty balanced!

F-Fun (what do they do for fun with their s/o? what's their idea of a fun day out?)

- he loves loves loves going out on walks, especially in the city, and just finding random things that seem fun to do. there are a bunch of people playing cornhole over there, how about you guys join in for a game? they're selling a new kind of hotpot at that restaurant, better give it a try!

G-Gratitude (how grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?)

- he's definitely aware of everything you do for him, and he's also very grateful that you're with him. he makes sure to let you know that every day.

H-Honesty (do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?)

- i think the only time thoma would ever keep something from you on purpose is if it would be somehow dangerous for you to know. other than that, he likes to make sure you're aware of everything you need to be. he likes his privacy like anyone else, but he also values communication.

I-Inspiration (did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?)

- being with you hasn't necessarily changed him (aside from the fact that you two are almost always seen together now) but it's definitely improved his mood a lot, not that it was ever really bad. he also likes to show off more now that you're around...

J-Jealousy (do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it?)

- thoma gets jealous relatively easily but is also not one to step in unless it's a situation in which you seem uncomfortable. he trusts you wholeheartedly, which sometimes means he has to keep himself from getting overly worried.

K-Kisses (are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?).

- he's a very good kisser. thoma's kisses are playful and sweet, or alternatively full of reassurance and love. your first kiss was a little rushed and he was a little nervous (not that he'd ever admit that) but he knew it was the right time.

L-Love confession (how would they confess to their s/o?)

- confesses accidentally while watching you do something that's actually pretty normal. you tap him on the shoulder and ask where he wants to go for lunch and he just kinda stares at you and then says "man i love you" and you're like. what. but he plays it off like he TOTALLY MEANT to say that and definitely didn't slip up.

M-Mornings (what's it like waking up with them? do they sleep late or wake up before the sun rises?)

- lazy lazy lazy. thoma knows he has to go to work but why would he do that when you're next to him all curled up into him? he can't just abandon you like that! fortunately the kamisatos are very forgiving, so when he shows up late they don't give him an earful.

N-Nicknames (what do they call their s/o?)

- babe/baby, sunshine, and occasionally sweetheart but usually just to tease you

O-On cloud nine (what are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?)

- when thoma first realizes he's in love with you it hits him like a truck and he has to sit down for a second to process it. after that he hangs around you a lot more often, and it's pretty obvious to anyone watching that he's in love.

P-PDA (how are they with PDA? is it fun to them or are they more reserved with their affection?)

- thoma's comfortable with pda and likes to tease you with it sometimes, unless you're someone who absolutely hates it, in which case he'll settle with handholding. otherwise, he'll give you random light kisses on the cheek or will grab you and pull you into him at random points throughout the day.

Q-Quirk (some random thing they do when they're with you for no reason in particular)

- his nose scrunches when he's trying not to laugh at you, which makes you laugh at him, which makes him laugh at you. congratulations! you have achieved pile of laughter.

R-Romance (how romantic are they? What would they do to make their s/o happy? Cliché or rather creative?)

- thoma is very romantic and also values friendship with his partner as well. he's sort of a mix between cliché and creative - while he will definitely take you out for a fancy dinner and lend you his jacket, he will also take you out to the lake and push you in or make a date out of who can spot the most dogs on a day out.

S-Support (are they helping their s/o achieve their goals do they believe in them?)

- one hundred percent he believes in you and will do his best to help you achieve any goals you have. ok thats the end of this headcanon i have nothing else to say GHCCN

T-Thrill (do they need to try out new things to spice out your relationship or do they prefer certain routine?)

- thoma loves trying new things! he doesn't need things to change constantly (and also that might be very tiring for him) but he does like to switch things up a little.

U-Understanding (how good do they know their partner? Are they empathetic?)

- forgot to change it from "good" to "well." WHOOPS. anyway

- thoma is very empathetic, so he's quick to understand how you're feeling, though it'll take him a little longer to understand why it is you're feeling like that. once you explain to him, he knows just what to do, whether it be celebrate with you on a big win or comfort you or give you some space.

V-Value (how important is the relationship to them? What is its worth in comparison to other things in their life?)

- it's SO important to him. having you in his life is one of the most important things to him. he's also been with the kamisatos for a really long time though, so thoma will need a little bit to sort out where his priorities are. rest assured that you're definitely up there.

W-Wild card (a random fluff headcanon?)

- thoma really likes the feeling of you running your fingers through his hair. bonus points if you wash it for him (he'll return the favor)

X-XOXO (Are they very affectionate? Do they love to kiss and cuddle?)

- if you're ever available for affection, thoma will take advantage of it. he loves being close to you and generally just the feeling of loving and being loved in return, especially when that incorporates physical affection. listen he just really likes being kissed.

Y- Yearning (how will they cope when they are missing their partner?)

- when you're gone thoma will surround himself with things that remind him of you. he'll also occasionally call your name or say things to you absentmindedly before remembering you're not there at present. poor guy... he'll be very happy once you're home.

Z-Zeal (are they willing to go to great lengths for the relationship? If so, what kind?)

- it depends on the lengths. the worst case scenario for thoma would be if he somehow had to choose between you and his work - that would terrify him, even though there's no way it would ever happen. other than that, since you're way up on his priority list, there's not much that he wouldn't do for you.

also short fics under the cut, they were kinda long i didnt want to make such an obnoxious post on people's feeds :3 ALSO i only did Reki and Langa because i did longer bits!

Reki drummed his fingers against the edge of his desk, jamming out to the music playing in his headphones. He mouthed along to the words to the song, tapping his foot on the floor. He was designing a new deck right now, waiting for you to arrive at his house. It was finally the weekend and you were spending the night at his house, and he was in an amazing mood. He ran his fingers through his hair, his bangs covering his forehead since it was one of the rare times he wasn’t wearing his signature headband. He leaned back in his chair, looking back around the room. He saw it resting near the pillow on his bed so he stood and padded over to grab it.

He picked it up, and right then the chorus of the song started up and Reki got lost in the music. He was snapping his fingers, shaking his head to flip his hair around, swaying his hips to the music, waving his arms to the beat. But, because of the volume, he didn’t hear you greeting his mom and younger sisters down the hall, and the creak of his bedroom door crack open or even see you poke your head in. Seeing Reki dancing in his room certainly was a sight you didn’t think you would ever see, and you leaned against the door, amused. Reki had actually started singing along to the song, and right in the middle of belting out a note he spun around and came face to face with you, and screamed, making you burst out laughing.

His face immediately turned bright red, and he scratched at his neck, bashfully looking away. You wiped tears from your eyes and set your bag down on the edge of his bed,

“I didn’t know you were so musical, babe”

“You don’t have to make it more embarrassing yknow” you pinched his cheeks and cooed at him

“Aww, is my baby Reki embarrassed? You’re so cute!!” He just shook your hands off and went back to his desk to pout, while you smiled and went up behind him, running your fingers through his hair and pulling it out of his face.

“Yknow, that was one of my favorite songs, I would love to sing and dance with you” He smiles at your words, peeking up at you before sitting up a bit and giving you a quick, sweet kiss.

Langa tapped his fingers against his desk, staring out the window. It was a calm Saturday afternoon, and all he wanted to do was go skate with you. But, his mom wouldn’t let him leave until he had finished all his work. He thought it was extremely childish, but complied and has been sitting at his desk, his blank, unfinished assignment in front of him. His chin was resting him his palm, gaze shifting down to the page where he started absentmindedly doodling on the page. Before he knew it, he had his very own cute little garden scene on his paper. He knew he should stop, but his hand just kept drawing. It was better than doing the assignment anyway.

Langa had texted you and told you about his predicament and you could already tell how bummed out he was, so you decided instead of just cancelling plans all together, you would just skate to his house and ‘help’ him with his homework. You had told him you were heading over, but in the moment Langa read it as a joke, preying on his misfortune. But, he really hoped you would actually show up, not that he would let you see his creative little animal friends he was sketching out.

You arrived at his home, greeted by his mother at the door. She’s delighted to have you over and tells you she thinks it’s a good idea, that you’ll probably help lift Langa’s spirits. Creeping to his room, you decide to scare him. You peek inside, and see him hunched over his desk, and much to your surprise, he looks like he’s working hard on his assignment.

You quietly walk up behind him, peering over his shoulder and you can’t help but gasp, scaring the living daylights out of the baby blue haired boy. His hand clutched at his chest, trying desperately to calm his rapid heartbeat while you snatched the paper from in front of him, admiring it and aweing over it,

“W-wait when did you get here??”

“Awe! Langa I didn’t know you could draw so well!” He snatched the page from you

“I don’t. I just got a little bored...:”

Then you got a look at his flushed face, leaning into his palm as a way to attempt to hide it form you. A poor attempt, but an attempt nonetheless. You could tell he was embarrassed and leaned down to give him a chaste kiss on the cheek, making him blush even more,

“Love you look so cute with your cheeks all flushed!”

“Why must you say such embarrassing things??”

“I just do it ‘cause I love you!” He just sighed. You could be so difficult sometimes.

‘...I love you too…” You stayed silent, before blurting out,

“So when are you gonna draw me a bunch of cute animals?”

yes yes hello friend !! 💝 miss cat directed you to me because i did my college apps last year !!! (yikes one year passed already?? why does that feel ages ago 🤧)

first of all, congratulations on making the decision to apply to college !! i know it’s been hard for a lot of people our age to figure out the college situation recently, so i’m proud of you for choosing to take the extra step this summer to buckle up and write those essays 💞

i’ve compiled a few tips on answering the PIQs (i was actually in the middle of typing this up when i received your ask haha), but some of them can be applied to other essays, as well !! they’re all under the cut (because, unfortunately, being brief is not my forte) 😊

(and for reference, the prompts i chose were #2 (creativity), #6 (subject), #7 (community), and #8 (anything) !!)

tip #1: understand the prompt.

before you even begin writing, it’s important to understand what the question is really asking. for the UC PIQs, this will look different depending on which four prompts you decide to do.

in question one, for example, they want to know about your skills in leading others, but notice that they’re also curious about your resolution abilities and teamwork experience. or in question two, they don’t want to know that you paint and that you love painting—they could be asking how resourceful you are, how you think outside the box when you have an idea.

once you know the question you’re going to be answering, you can move on to brainstorming!

tip #2: write down three (3) key takeaways.

these are like the most basic, not-even-a-sentence answers you would give to each question. so for me, in response to question eight (“what do you believe makes you stand out as a strong candidate for the UCs?”), my answers were perseverance, courage, and character. i had a story about that, so i wrote about my experience with martial arts.

i recommend you do something similar. decide on three things that you want to communicate to your audience, and write them in the footnote of your document. your goal is to cover all three points so that, if anyone were to read your essay, they would walk away understanding those three things about you.

i found this strategy really helpful for keeping my essay streamlined while writing—if a sentence didn’t relate to any of those main points, i would cut it since those words would take up valuable space in the word count. stay focused on what needs to be in this essay, and if you have extra words left in the word count later, you can add those details back in.

and once you’re done with your essay, make sure to refer back to your takeaways and check that you covered all of them sufficiently!

tip #3: highlight your stories.

i sent cat an ask a couple days ago with a few pictures of my response to an end-of-year college counseling survey that referenced this tip (you can find it here). basically i said that, when choosing what topics to write about, pick things that interest you! if you get excited talking about it, your audience should get excited about reading it, because they’ll pick up on the passions you have and then everyone’s excited !!! :D

i’ll tell you a secret: everyone you meet, everyone you see, has countless unique experiences that few others may have. me? i spend hours making mashups out of kpop songs. i earned my black belt years after a traumatizing experience during training. i get russian harry potter and spanish dr. seuss books from the library. and i created a collaborative online google photos album for my classmates that now has thousands of entries. although these aren’t necessarily unique to only me, they’re still special enough to the point where, when you put them all together, you get a better image of the person i am, and what i value.

so find a story, a habit, a hobby that makes you different, because i believe that everyone has them. give them some food for thought, or that one-liner that sticks in their brain and won’t go away. and remember: these stories don’t all have to be extraordinary—they should be about people or moments of special value to you, because that’s what matters.

personal tip: when i was brainstorming ideas, i decided that the best way to get ideas out there was to go on a rant (because sometimes it helps to just have a conversation with yourself !!) and i recorded myself, so i could replay what i said !! this was so so crucial to me finding my own voice for writing essays. notice the way you word things when you talk—a good line or two may make it into the final draft :)

i found it helpful to read sample essays as well! they give a lot of great ideas on the kinds of topics people write about. (also, it’s kind of fun, because who doesn’t love a good story?)

but the people reading your essay won’t be there to just enjoy your story; what they really want you to do is to tell them what you learned from your experience. they want to know whether you’re teachable and willing to grow both as a student and as a young adult. so make sure to take note of the life lessons you learned, experience you gained, character you built, etc.

minor tip on ending your essay: if you’re telling a story that happened in the past, then close with what you learned and how you can apply that to your life moving forward. if you’re telling a story that has no definite end yet (like a passion or dream you have), you probably don’t have everything figured out (and you can say that in your essay!), so it might be better to close with your hopes for the future.

tip #4: ask your family for help.

peer-editing is one of the most effective ways to detect errors and inconsistencies in your writing, because, after staring at your essay for so long, you might gloss over glaring contradictions. for all of my essays, i printed them out and asked my parents to help me revise them. we’d meet every other night (or every night, depending on how much time was left) to review and discuss improvements.

i actually kept some of those printed drafts (only the first and the final ones for comparison), and let me tell you from experience—you’re probably going to have a lot of drafts (i think the most i did was seven? but you don’t need to go that far!). this part of the process does take some time, so remember to be patient and kind to yourself :) these essays won’t happen overnight!

enlisting the help of others also helps keep you accountable. one of the struggles many seniors face while writing essays is just... setting aside time to do them. and even though the constant reminders from your parents will definitely get repetitive and a bit stress-inducing, i can tell you from personal experience that i’m so glad they did; otherwise, i don’t think i’d have my essays done in time :’)

while writing college essays is challenging, your family will be there supporting you each step of the way. chances are that they’ll have their own pointers to pass on to you, since they probably remember doing this process themselves! and, out of everyone in your life, they probably remember the most about you (because you probably don’t remember much when you were four or five), so they might have a couple starter ideas for topics when brainstorming. you can rely on them for their advice and their experience.

tip #5: self-editing.

here’s the part that takes the longest time.

use action words. this is probably something you’ve heard all throughout elementary school where they didn’t like you to say “said” because it was “boring”… but honestly, the difference between “doing my own version” and “infusing it with my personality” could go a long way. also, use words that you would actually use in an essay—then it’ll have your own special flair, and not sound like it’s taken from some stuffy 80s textbook!

here are some of the words i used (once again, you shouldn’t use these words if they don’t sound like something you’d write/say): potential, overlay, wrestle, launch, analogous, weave, infuse, experiment, outlet, revel, fascinate, satisfaction, pursue, expand, distinction, capture, range, archive, engage, beyond, build, adversity, cultivate, preserve, commit, explore, convey, naturally

also, be on the lookout for repeated words. i once wrote an essay without noticing that i used “hope” three times in the same paragraph. don’t do that! use synonyms :) personally, i tended to run short on synonyms, so i always kept a tab or two open on my computer reserved for searching up new words.

side note: unfortunately, during my search for synonyms, i discovered that thesaurus.com just didn’t give me what i was looking for. i highly recommend using wordhippo instead; it has so many more options and they’re grouped by the different definitions of your word! i found the synonyms i needed really quickly and it was very satisfying!

avoid the passive voice! my teacher gave me this tip for theses or any other college-level writing. here’s an example of the passive voice: “there was a large part of me that wanted to turn back.” that’s twelve words taking up precious space in your word count! instead, say something like, “i considered turning back.” you’ve just freed up eight words :)

tip #6: final revisions.

this is the step where you fine-tune your essays. meet that word count.

read your writing out loud. does it sound like you? it should. every writer has a different voice, and you need to ensure that yours is pervasive throughout your essay. feel free to use contractions—not only do they reduce your word count (this was a good thing for me, since i had a problem with getting under 350 words), but they also give a more casual tone to your essay, as if you’re telling a story to someone in the room.

next, pretend to be an admissions officer and have someone else read your essay to you. do you get excited hearing about this student who shares your name? if you do, there’s a good chance the real admissions officers will love your essays, too. this also gives you a chance to review to your essay as a whole. pay attention to the overall flow. is there a clear beginning and end? do you resolve the issues and overcome the trials you brought up? listen to it as if it’s a story, and take this time to enjoy what you’ve written. you worked hard!

final thoughts / encouragements.

oh my goodness, did we make it to the end? honestly if you did, thank you so much 🥺

okay but despite my relatively optimistic tone throughout this post, i’m still going to be honest with you—the college essay writing process is difficult. it requires you to look inside yourself and analyze the “why” behind some of the things that you love, and that isn’t easy to do at all. it’s intellectually and emotionally challenging, because not only do you need to use so much energy writing, but you also have to dig deeper to understand yourself, and that’s not easy, either.

but i wanted to encourage you, too. no matter what you may think of yourself at 12am, 2am, 4am writing these essays, believe you have a personality that others love and will love when they meet you. you are an interesting person with unique experiences who deserves to share your thoughts with others. you have so many people behind you, supporting you during these next few months. and when you find that you can’t write any more, remember to take time to care for yourself. have a warm shower. go to bed early. i could go on and on about why sleep is good for your brain but i’ll spare you the details in this post 😉

one last thing: keep the bigger picture in focus. remember, by december or january, you will be finished with most of the application process. that’s no small accomplishment. you can do it. 💝

hi mädch !! ty for ur kind words in your tags on my graphics, you’re always so so nice! 🥹💞 for the second panel, the little curvy lines are actually from a graphic elements pack i’ve had for ages, collected along the way for work. i have actually been meaning to put together a resources pack for ccs soon so i’ll be sure to include some! but also, irregular curvy shapes like that are super easy to make! in photoshop (or illustrator if you use that more), you’ll just want the pen tool. then instead of having it set to fill, you’ll set it to stroke! (you can always change that later.) start your shape anywhere on your document with a point, and then from that point when you make your next point, you’ll hold down your mouse and drag to create the curve you want! you keep doing this until you’re back at your original point to close your shape. i don’t know if that made any sense without the visuals LOL but if you have any questions please let me know and i’m happy to try and help!! - @slowrabbitpd 💞

Thank you for allowing me to write for my favorites! I'm choosing my Fellswap Gold Papyri

Caffiene (Fellswap Gold Papyrus):

Caffiene is used to his daughters' antics. So he would be expecting that they did something but he doesn't know what yet. When he wakes up to giggles he immediately smiles "w-what are you t-two up to now?" He asks as he sits up, he would look at his hands and notice the nail polish. "a-ah. I see." He grins wider and walks calmly to the bathroom to look in the mirror as if he knew exactly what happened to him, one look in the mirror and he lets out his own giggles. "i-it's your turn." He turns to them with a smile as wide as his braces allow. He has learned overtime from Champagne that pranks such as this must be done back.

Cocoa (Horrorfellswap Gold Papyrus):

Cocoa is a bit more sensitive than when he used to be Caffiene long ago so he immediately woke up as soon as he felt the first touch of nail polish from one daughter and eye liner from the other. And he heard the giggles. He almost flinched and panicked from the sudden contact but his need for his daughters to have fun overpowered and he stayed still. He waited until they were done and then act like he just woke up. "w-what are you doing?" He asks with a small smile. "We made you pretty papa!" They responded in unison. They felt him stiffen and knew that they could have worded it better because he's very insecure of his height, the way he looks, the hole in his skull and his missing arm. But he reassured them that he knew that they didn't mean it like that. "c-can I do you next?" He asks shyly as he was shaking stray glitter out of his skull.

Aphrodisiac (Lustfellswap Gold Papyrus):

Aphrodisiac used to use alot of makeup when he was Underground. But now that he's on the Surface he doesn't use it as much. He woke up to giggling and opened his eyes and focused the magenta glowing lights on his daughters. "d-do tell me what my beautiful daughters are up t-to." They just giggle more and back away letting him stand up, as he stands he notices a bunch of glitter fall to the floor and he looks at his painted hands. One daughter gives him a hand mirror and he gazes into it, looking at the makeup on his face. "n-not bad!" He says. "l-let me do your makeup so I can really show you h-how it's done."

Deathwish (Killer!Fellswap Gold Papyrus):

Deathwish never thought he would be able to be a father. He cracked after getting tired of his friends and family being repeatedly murdered by Frisk and decided to join them on their Genocide Route and then managed to put Frisk's angry soul to rest and escaped to the Surface. He is a very nervous guy and never wants to hurt people like he had to when he was Underground. It was a pleasant surprise when he woke up from a nightmare of him being stuck back Underground and he was all alone to seeing his daughters in front of him, they already had his hands painted and had his hoodie covered in glitter and they were in the middle of trying to cover the permanent black lines running from his eyes to his chin. When the girls placed a mirror in front of him he looked just like he did before his trauma. He started crying. "daddy why are you crying?" He hears his worried daughters ask, thinking they made him sad. "i-it's okay girls... p-please continue."

Watercolor (Ink!Fellswap Gold Papyrus):

Watercolor is a guy of creativity, So of course his girls are going to know their way around makeup. When he wakes up to giggles he knows some kind of chaos has happened. He sneezes which causes a poof of glitter to puff off of him and he notices his painted hands. He realizes what's happening and he starts laughing with his girls and sits still for them to finish his makeup.

Wire (Error!Fellswap Gold Papyrus):

Wire never thought he would have children. He thought he was too undesirable and no one would love him enough to want to have kids with him so his daughters mean so much to him. Wire has heightened sensitivity so he's a bit more sensitive then Caffiene and Cocoa combined. So the daughters are very gentle and he wakes up to the sound of twin giggles, painted hands, painted face, and his girls in the middle of covering him with pink glitter. He is very surprised and impressed that they managed to do all of this without him waking sooner. He laughs with them and lets them continue.

“JANUS! CYG!” He screams, hearing twin pairs of footsteps racing down the hall, bursting through his open door, he’s sobbing openly now, gross sobbing, snot running down his face, tears streaming down his eyes.

He feels someone trying to remove Roman from his arms, and he clings on tighter, incoherently babbling about blood and guts and poison and death, and fear, fear, fear-

“Rem. I need you to listen to me. Can you do that?” He inhales deeply, something in Cygnus’s voice calming him, the soft surety getting his attention. “I need you to let go. Not for long, and you can stay the whole time if you want, but you need to let go if you want me to help him get better. Can you do that, please?” Cygnus explains softly, calmly, and he nods, hesitantly relinquishing Roman into Cygnus’s arms.

“What should I know?” Cygnus asks, assessing the damage done to Roman, inhaling sharply as he takes in his current state.

“Cockatrice. Poisoned talons, beak, stinger tail. I don’t… I don’t know an antidote, can’t make one, can’t heal, useless, I’m useless.” Instantly, Dee is there, wrapping his arms around him, and he buries his face against his shoulder, letting Dee soothe him, rub his back up and down as he cries.

“Roman-“

“Will be taken care of, love. He’s in good hands. Let Cygnus do his work in peace. He’ll get us if anything happens.”

“What if he dies? What if the poison stops his heart? What if he bleeds out on the floor? What if he’s left in a vegetative state and can never think or speak again? What if, what if, what…” He trails off, slumping against Janus, shaking.

“Shh, I know, love. I know. But he’ll be ok, ok? He always is, he always bounces back.” He shakes his head.

“He doesn’t. He pretends he does, pretends he’s ok, pretends he’s fine, but he isn’t, he’s not, he hasn’t been, not for a long, long, long time, not since before you started showing up, he isn’t sleeping, he isn’t stopping, he isn’t taking breaks, he’s working himself to death and no one notices and no one cares, and no one listens, and everyone shuts him down, and he cries all the time, and he’s broken, so broken, but he won’t tell anyone.” Remus blurts out, shoving away from Janus, shoving to his feet, fists clenched and shaking as he lets out a shout, summoning his mace.

He screams, slamming it into the wall, chipping away at the wood, not stopping his furious assault until his arms are aching, until the head of the mace flies off the handle, across the room, crashing through his desk, until he’s screamed his throat raw and tastes copper, and still, it hurts, Roman hurts, and he hates, hates, hates, that all he is good at is breaking things.

He punches the wall with his fist, relishing the crack of his knuckles against the hard wood, the delicious pain that bruises his hand, sends a jolt up his shoulder, and it feels so good, to hurt, because he can feel Roman’s hurt, and he needs the wounds to match.

“Remus. Enough.” Then Deceit is holding his arm, pulling him away from the wall, talking softly and gently and quietly, and his anger fizzles into hot, exhausted tears as he lets Janus guide him to bed and tuck him in.

…

Cygnus is sweating, doing his best to patch up Roman. His healing power is still intact, though it takes a bit more effort to use, since his swap to a dark side, but it’s still there, and he’s using every ounce of it now.

He’s managed to repair the tissue missing from his shoulder, as it was the most serious injury he had. He has also closed up the puncture wounds, the scratch across his cheek, that was relatively easy, it was the venom that was giving him a run for his money, as they say.

“l…lo…? Wh… wh…” Roman’s eyes are open, though they’re unfocused, glazed over with fever. He is burning up under his hands, and nothing he tries is breaking it or bringing it down.

“Roman. You got injured. You’re sick. I’m doing everything I can. You’re going to be alright.” He isn’t sure about that last sentence, but he can’t bring himself to say otherwise.

“n-not w…worth it. D…don’t wa-ste yo..ur time.” His breath catches as Roman’s eyes slip closed, going limp as his breathing continues to barely wheeze in and out.

He stumbles back, leaning heavily against the wall, eyes widening as he feels himself trembling. Because all of Roman’s desire is focused on one singular thought, as loud and strong as if he’d screamed it from the rooftops.

“Just let me die.”

…

“Roman. Please. Please, I need you to get better, you need to get better.”

No, I don’t. I’m not worth the effort. I’m not worthy of it. I don’t deserve it. I don’t want it. You would do far better than I ever have. I hurt you. I hurt everyone. I can’t do anything good, or right. Every time I think I understand the rules, they change on me again, and everyone gets mad, everyone gets hurt, everyone is angry and I don’t understand what you want from me, so just let me go.

“I won’t stop. I won’t leave. I won’t until you wake up. I’m not letting you give up, I’m not letting you blame yourself for everything, I’m not letting you tear yourself apart.”

He can feel someone holding his hand in a death grip, a cool rag on his forehead, as he shivers, feeling both too hot and too cold all at once, shaking at the waves of fierce agony washing through him. He moans, feeling soft hands on him, cradling him in someone’s lap, and he peels open his eyes, vision blurred and stomach churning.

“RoRo? Can you see me? You awake?” He doesn’t want to be. But he is. So he nods, trying to clear his throat, but his throat is raw, it feels like someone has shoved splinters into his larynx, and he chokes on his breath.

Someone else holds a glass to his mouth, and he sips the cool water gratefully, blinking to clear his vision, flinching back at the silver/indigo eyes of Ambition.

“why?” Ambition’s brow furrows, his head tilting slightly, in a way that had always meant Logan was trying to decipher something, understand something. Some things never change. “why save me?” He clarifies.

“RoRo, why wouldn’t we help? You scared me, you scared me so badly.” Remus holds him a little closer, but he shoves him away, shoves off of his lap, hissing as he pulls something in his shoulder, his chest burning.

“Roman-“ His eyes flash as he glares up at the two of them, ignoring the tears streaming down his face, an angry kind of hurt seething in his heart, because if he isn’t angry he doesn’t know what he’ll be and being mad for nothing is the whole reason he’s here in the first place, and god, he never learns, does he? How useless, how stupid, what an idiot.

“You knew what I wanted.” He hisses, staring down Ambition, shoving venom into his voice. Because what’s the point of knowing what everyone wants if you don’t honor their wishes? “You saved me anyway, you know how it feels to not be listened to, to have nobody give a shit, to have everyone ignore you and speak over you and shoot down every single one of your ideas, no matter how hard you’re trying, gods know I’m sick of trying, I try so hard and I can never do anything right, just look what happened with you, because I’m an insensitive, insecure, worthless, asshole and I just want it to be over and done with already!” He yells, crumpling in on himself, hands laced through his hair as he shakes, breathing unsteady. “I’m so… useless. I’m so tired and dried up. I have nothing, I am nothing, I just… I’m so… done.” He whispers, feeling everyone’s eyes on him. He feels Remus reach out, place a hand on his shoulder, and he shivers, hiccupping on his sobs. “I’m sorry.”

“Roman!” Ambition calls, reaching for him, feeling what he is about to do, but not fast enough to do anything about it as he sinks out, back to his room, locking his door, before stumbling to his bed, collapsing atop it before passing out again, embracing oblivion as his fever spikes.

…

Everything is a haze. He doesn’t know how long he’s been lying here. It could be hours, it could be weeks, it could be minutes.

He drifts in and out of what could generously be called nightmare filled bouts of sleep.

Sometimes he can’t tell the difference between being awake and asleep. Sometimes he can’t tell if he’s alive or dead. He doesn’t know which one he wishes for more.

Sometimes the cockatrice is back, ripping into his flesh, tearing him to shreds, devouring him alive as he screams and writhes, desperate cries going unanswered, because who would come save him, now?

Sometimes it’s Patton, gently stroking his cheek, before his eyes go cold and his hand plunges into his chest, ripping out his heart and crushing it in his grip, as he collapses to the floor, life draining out of him.

Sometimes he’s on stage, a crowd of people watching, waiting, but he can’t move, can’t speak, he’s frozen to the spot, and he misses his cues. The crowd starts to whisper, then murmur, then boo. Things are thrown at him, but he’s forced to stand still, to take it, to absorb all the hatred and failure and ruin.

Sometimes his vision just swims in and out, colors blending and forms shifting until his room almost looks like an alien landscape, and it would be almost soothing, if it weren’t accompanied by waves of vertigo that have him clenching his fists, clinging to anything within reach, trying to convince his body that no, he’s not moving, he’s lying down, he’s perfectly still.

In his clearer moments, he knows he should drink something, knows he should eat something, knows it will help him get better. Sometimes, he thinks he hears someone speaking on the other side of the door, sometimes he hears knocking, frantic voices. Sometimes, he almost has the motivation to open it, thinking of Remus’s distress at his state.

But he doesn’t. He lets himself sink back into his fever dreams, lets his apathy overwhelm him again and again, because it will hurt, at first, but he’ll forget, soon enough, he’ll be brilliant, as the one and only creativity, it’s what he’s always wanted, after all.

And he is tired. Tired of trying his best only to be told it isn’t good enough. Tired of trying to be on the good side, only to be told every time that, somehow, he wasn’t right. Tired of always being wrong, no matter how hard he is working to be better, to be right. Tired of giving up on his dreams for everyone else to be happy, tired of being pushed aside, tired of being broken over and over, tired of being tired!

He just wants to let it all go.

When the summons comes, he doesn’t fight it. He’s too tired, too empty, too done, to even care enough to not show his face.

He rises up in his corner of the room, arms hugging himself tight around his middle, eyes glued to the floor, because he doesn’t want to see the pity or disgust in their eyes, doesn’t want to open his mouth just to be berated again, doesn’t want to do anything other than curl up in a ball and disappear.

He looks like shit. He knows it. His hair is an absolute mess, the bags under his eyes rival Virgil’s darkest eyeshadow, it’s only been a few days, at most, but he is thinner, gaunt, eyes red rimmed and puffy, from the ceaseless, empty tears that never seem to stop, even though his emotions have. He thinks the fever is gone, the venom worked its way out of his system, but he still feels off balance, still feels a bit hazy and wobbly, though that probably goes back to the not eating or drinking thing he’s been doing.

“Oh, buddy.” He hears Thomas exhale, and he shrinks back farther, yet again, a disappointment. What kind of hero shows himself at his weakest? What kind of hero fails the way he has, can’t even fight off his own demons, much less others’?

Then again, he’s not a hero. He never has been. He’s a nobody.

“Roman, please. Please talk to us.” Virgil, a soft kind of desperation in his voice, and once again, he’s failed, because he’s scaring them. He really can’t do anything right, can he?

A choked sob escapes his lips, before he covers his mouth with his hand, refusing to let anything else out, though he can see the tears dripping to the floor, he wonders if he’d collected them all, how big a pond they could fill, surely nothing would survive in them, the salt too much to bear.

“Roman…” Patton, who can surely feel his pain more than anyone else, surely by now it is leaking over to him, no matter how hard he is trying to keep it contained. He flinches at Patton's touch, pulling away.

“What happened, Ro?” Thomas asks, and he has to choke back broken laughter. What hasn’t happened, what hasn’t he fucked up, what hasn’t he failed?

“Ask him. He knows.” He leans against the wall, vision swimming as he uses his power to summon Ambition.

“Logan? What-" Thomas squeaks out, no doubt taking in his new appearance. Ambition winces.

“Is now the time for this conversation? I was hoping to avoid this until-"

“Ambition.” Virgil interrupts softly, nodding towards Roman, so small looking that he hadn’t even seen him there. “He called you.”

“Roman-“ He feels Ambition take a step toward him, and he shakes his head.

“Tell them.” He says, wincing at his own voice, because it sounds so unlike him.

“Roman. Please.” Ambition is before him now, and he manages to lift his head, to look at those endless eyes, the warmth in them breaking him further until he thinks he might shatter. “I will. If you let someone, anyone, take care of you, I’ll tell them.” He doesn’t flinch back this time, as Ambition reaches out, slowly tucking back his hair. He shudders, leaning into the contact, eyes slipping closed for a moment, at the warmth, at the soft comfort, as he feels Ambition gently wipe away his tears with his thumb.

“ok.” He whispers, eyes flicking open once more, though he doesn’t meet anyone’s, instead staring down at the carpet.

“who do you want, Roman?”

“Deceit.” He doesn’t hesitate, though he can feel Ambition’s surprise at his answer, though he recovers from it quickly, with a sharp nod. “remus can come too, I know he must be losing it.” He mumbles, feeling a bit lighter at the upwards tug he can see at the corner of Ambition’s lips.

“he is. I think he’s broken every piece of furniture in his room, and added about a dozen new holes in the wall.” He hears the slight pop of Deceit and Remus appearing, and instantly, he is surrounded by warmth. He melts into the embrace, slowly wrapping his own arms tight around the warmth, shoulders shaking as more endless sobs escape him.

“brobro.” Remus’s voice is choked, and he can feel his twin’s tears staining his pajama top, but he doesn’t care, folding tighter against him. “you had me scared. I thought you were really gonna do it. I thought you were really gonna leave me.” Remus’s voice breaks.

“m sorry.” He mumbles, feeling Remus pulling back, a pained sound escaping his throat at the loss of contact, the loss of warmth, but his twin’s hand slips into his, and Deceit is standing before him, rubbing up and down his arm, eyes dark and nearly unreadable.

“hey there Princey. Can we start getting you cleaned up a bit, love?” Deceit’s voice is soft and mellow, an almost musical lilt to it that helps soothe him, helps ease something loose in his chest as he nods. “alright, darling. How about a bath? You wouldn’t believe it, but I am a bit of a connoisseur when it comes to bath bombs and scented oils, helps with the shedding. We can peruse my collection, and pick out something you like, to help relax those sore muscles. Does that sound alright?” A small smile tugs at his lips as he quietly acquiesces, letting Deceit take the lead as they sink out to the snake sides room.

…

“Ok, ok, ok, so what is going on? Why does Roman look like… like that? And why do you look like that?!” Thomas asks, turning to Ambition, who sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“His name isn’t Logan, anymore, Thomas. We… neglected him. All of us. You included. So, he changed, moved over to the dark side. That’s why his look changed, along with his role and his name. He’s Ambition now, not Logic, and we… don’t know his name. He hasn’t told us. We haven’t earned it. Haven’t earned his trust. Which is fair.” Ambition looks over to Virgil, who’s seated on the stairs, hood pulled up over his head, chin on his knees, a bit startled. Of all of them, he hadn’t expected Virgil to be the one to explain so evenly and truthfully what had happened. Virgil catches his glance, and smiles wryly. “What? I get it, dude, I did the same thing. Just glad you’re doing better.” Virgil gives him his two finger salute, and he finds himself smiling just a bit.

“That about sums it up, yes. I am now known as Ambition. I sense desires and wishes, what everyone wants. And… that is where Roman comes into play.” His smile fades.

“We were trying to get to him, but he locked his room. We tried talking to him, begging him, really, but he wouldn’t open it up. We… we didn’t want to involve you, if you weren’t ready to see Thomas, but we needed to get him out of his room, and this was the only way. I didn’t know he would summon you.” Patton explains apologetically, and he nods.

“I understand, Patton. I wish this reintroduction were under better circumstances. I had hoped giving Roman some time in his room to settle down would help his emotional state, but I believe you did the correct thing.” Patton nods, a bit of relief in his eyes that he’s not upset.

“Ok. So, what happened with Roman? Why… I’ve never seen him look like that.”

“He hasn’t been feeling his best for a while now.” Virgil says softly, sinking a bit further back into his hood as everyone’s eyes turn on him.

“What do you mean, Virg?” Thomas asks softly. Virgil exhales hugely.

“He hasn’t been as loud, as he usually is. He’s been quiet. He hasn’t been singing, or dancing down the halls, or coloring in the living room, scattering his art stuff everywhere. He hasn’t been spending time in the imagination, either. Any time I pass his door I felt him inside, just… sitting there, running on autopilot. I’ve tried, to get him to talk, to get anything out of him, but once he sees someone’s there, he squares up his shoulders and puts on his smile, as if nothing’s wrong. He won’t… tell me.” Virgil sighs, plucking at loose strings on his hoodie.

“I… hadn’t noticed.” Thomas sounds a bit lost, looking around at his sides, or the ones who remain, and sits heavily on the couch. “I’ve been neglecting myself, haven’t I?” He murmurs, running a hand through his hair.

“Yes. You have. But that’s nothing you can’t fix, given time and space. I know you’ve been busy, and had a lot on your mind, but it’s time to take some time for yourself.” Ambition says gently.

“He’s right, kiddo. We… I’ve been pushing you pretty hard, lately. Putting a lot of pressure on you, to be perfect, and everyone’s suffered for it. I’m sorry, Virg. I know you’ve been more stressed that usual, cause of everything going on, how hard I’m trying to be perfect. And I’m sorry again, Ambition, for not being there for you, for not listening, because you are right. And I’m sorry, Thomas, for making it so impossible to be who I want you to be. You don’t have to be perfect. You shouldn’t be! Nobody is! I know you always try your best, to do what’s right. And… and that is always, always, good enough for me. I’m proud of you, kiddo. No matter what, I’m proud of you. All of you.” Patton lets out a little laugh as he swipes at his eyes. “I’m just a big sap, aren’t I?” He mumbles, letting out a squeak as he’s pulled into a hug.

It takes him a moment to realize it’s Thomas, Thomas is hugging him, one hand cradling against his head, the other pressing against the small of his back, and he makes a soft noise, burying his head against Thomas’s shoulder, letting himself sniffle, letting himself let out his feelings.

“Thank you, Pat. That means a lot, to me. I know you’re always trying your best, too, even when that means you go a little overboard, sometimes. I forgive you, Pat, even though I was never mad to begin with, I forgive you.” Thomas hugs Patton a little tighter, his head nestled against Patton’s hair, as he smiles smally, looking at his other sides.

Virgil is smiling smally to himself from his perch on the steps, sitting straight and uncurled, a lightness to his posture that Thomas doesn’t see enough, that he’ll work harder to bring out. Ambition has that small upturn to his lips, proud glint in his eyes that he gets whenever someone learns something new, a subtle soft fondness to his eyes. He wants to see that look more often.

“come here, you two.” He says fondly.

“I don’t think that’s necessary-“

“Nope-“ Ambition and Virgil say at the same time, and Patton lets out a giggle, looking up at the two of them, eyes wet but shining.

“Get over here, kiddos, before you make me come over there.” Virgil rolls his eyes, but his lopsided smile lights up his face as he joins the hug.

“Come on, Teach, if I’m doing it, you gotta join in.” Ambition pauses at the use of his old nickname, but hesitantly joins in regardless, loosening up as he feels Virgil’s arms around him, then Patton’s and Thomas’s and somehow, he’s become the center of the hug.

“I love you all, so, so much. We’re all gonna do better, to listen and take care of each other. I’m going to do better to take care of all of you.” Thomas murmurs, and Patton can feel the love swelling in his own chest, the tender fondness filling him up from the inside out. Ambition feels pride sweep through him, feeling how much Thomas wants this, means this, will work towards this. And Virgil is just glad that the tension that had been filling the mindscape has broken.

“Someone keep me updated on how Roman’s doing, yeah? And… and let him know I wanna talk, whenever he’s ready to. I don’t wanna pressure him, but…”

“I know, kiddo. We’ll send him your way. Now go eat some cookies and watch a movie. You deserve it.” Patton says, finally pulling away, flashing him a shaky but sincere smile, before sinking out with a little wave.

“Welp. Guess that’s my cue. See you next time, Thomathy.” Virgil says, smiling a bit wider at Thomas’s snort, before vanishing like a ghost.

“I suppose I should be going, as well. I want to check up on Deceit and Remus. See how they’re coming along with him. Ideally, he’ll be sleeping by now.”

“Lo-Ambition, wait.” Thomas calls, and he freezes, absurdly afraid that, for some reason, now that they’re alone, he will be rejected. “I know I don’t know exactly what went down, but I want you to know that this doesn’t change anything. Ok, let me rephrase that,” Thomas laughs, at Ambition’s incredulous look, “It changes a lot of things, but it doesn’t change us. You’re still the coolest person I know, bud. And when I said I’m gonna do better to take care of everyone, I meant you and Deceit and Remus, too.” Ambition smiles, looking away, letting out a soft breath.

“Thank you, Thomas. I will take that under advisement.”

“Ambition?” He pauses again, turning to give Thomas an exasperated glance, that makes him laugh.

“I like the new look.” Ambition smiles, a radiant, full face smile, that absolutely melts Thomas’s heart, because when was the last time he looked that happy? Ambition nods once, before sinking out, leaving Thomas to collapse onto the couch and fumble for the remote. Time to replay some kingdom hearts and give everyone a break.

…

Remus looks up at the whoosh of someone sinking in, relaxing as he sees its just Cygnus. Roman is snuggled close to his chest, burritoed in a blanket, sleeping peacefully. He can hear Janus in the kitchen, humming softly, the scent of warm, comforting soup wafting through the dark side.

“How’s he doing?” Cygnus asks lowly, not wanting to wake Roman, who desperately needs the rest. He’s relieved to see him sleeping, the prince already looks better, a little less pale, a little less hopeless, bundled against Remus, who is holding him as if he’ll never let go.

“Better. He opened up a bit, with Jan, he helped him with the bath. He was halfway asleep when he got out, but we got a little bit of food in him, before he passed out. How’d it go on your end?”

“Good. A lot better than I’d expected. Virgil was surprisingly helpful in keeping Thomas calm, explaining everything to him very, well,” his lips twist in a bittersweet smile, “logically. He’d noticed Roman’s deteriorating state, he just hadn’t been able to get Roman to open up.” He replies, sitting carefully on the couch, so as to not shift it too much.

“Yeah. He’s pretty stubborn, pretty dedicated to the knight in shining armor bit.”

“Unlike anyone else I know, I’m certain.” Remus scoffs at Cygnus’s side eyeing him, mock offense playing across his face.

“Please. I don’t do all that rescuing damsel in distress shit.” Cygnus raises an eyebrow.

“You did with me.” Well. There’s nothing he can say to that, and he finds himself for once speechless, blushing furiously, because when the hell did Cygnus get smooth!? “Besides, I know you’d fight anyone and everyone for us, Rem. For him, too.”

“Is that Cyg?” Janus pokes his head out from the kitchen, eyes pinched with worry as he leans against the end of the couch, looking hard at Cygnus.

“I’m fine. Thomas… assured me that our relationship is still intact, that he holds nothing against me. He said he liked the new look.” He mumbles the last sentence with a blush at Deceit’s soft chuckle, feeling his fingers ghost over the scales dotting his cheekbones.

“He should. You’re stunning, darling.” Deceit laughs harder as his face burns.

“He’s going to take a break. Thomas is, I mean. Everyone agreed it’s necessary. Patton… apologized. To everyone, for his impossible standards. For pushing so hard. And Thomas wants to spend time with everyone. Wants to take more time, for everyone. Including you two.” Deceit nods, a soft smile on his lips as he slips onto the couch beside Cygnus.

“How are you doing, lovely?”

“Good. I’m good. I think… I think things are going to start getting better, Dee.”

“I hope so.”

“I hope someone fucks me like a porn star on the dining room table.” Remus comments idly, surprising them into silence for a moment before bursting into uncontrolled laughter, shattering the heaviness of the moment.

It’s still a long road to a full recovery. To any of them being close to okay. But they’ll get there. Together, they’ll all get there.

I think Suga is a really creative person and would be rlly good at cooking cause he’s wife and husband material at the same time

He would definitely encourage you to join him in a cooking session, especially if it’s free, plus, it’s not his fault the advertisement said for couples!

You obviously agreed and the two of you went to the centre the following week

The two of you were beyond shocked when you saw who was leading the class

You were about to faint cause you really didn’t wanna see the rivals and how the hec did he get into Miyagi

Fortunately oh ever so reliable Suga caught you before you could fall

And thankfully a professional attitude was kept between you and Suga and Osamu

I mean, at least it wasn’t Atsumu...

The two of you made some onigiris

You failed to even cook the rice since basically everyone just microwaves their food when they’re feeling lazy which is 24/7

Luckily Suga fixed it up for you

You did terribly at making onigiris

You could hear Osamu audibly sigh and face palm, but luckily Suga was there to help you

Fortunately the onigiris didn’t turn out too bad

I mean at least you were good at one thing..

Daichi was accompanying you to the art store cause you wanted some new stuff

It’s almost Christmas so unlimited shopping spree =D

Daichi be holding all your bags for you as you run from one store to another

You were currently running through all the aisles throwing more and more things in the cart

Daichi be sweat dropping as he pushes the trolley while balancing all your bags

This was definitely a much more vigorous exercise for him than volleyball, but honestly he was wondering how you were so full of energy when all he wanted to do was go home and away from the cold snow

As the two of you entered the last isle, daichi thought of a great idea to quickly end this trip

He ran to the end and grabbed a sketchbook, ditching the trolley, and running back to you

You quickly examined the paper and frowned

“Daichi, you seriously know nothing about art, this paper is so thin, how is it meant to hold anything? But don’t worry, I’ll teach you plenty about art when we get home~”

He just made it worse for himself

I guess it was worth a shot?

You were busy drawing all day and had basically been in your room all day, not even going out to have meals and just getting everything delivered to you by ur boyfie which u were rlly grateful for

Lunch was coming around and you were still sketching out designs or smthing

Poor bby was feeling vry lonley

Shyly enters ur room after knocking ofc

Comes up behind you and hugs you

You immediately melt into his hug

I mean, he literally is a soft giant <3

The two of you stay like that for a while before u begin prying him off so u can continue ur work

He wants to be respectful to u but he also just wants some of ur time since you’ve been cooped away all day

So he continues hugging you

And you eventually give in and cuddle for an hour and you shower him in attention :)

It was almost Noya’s bday and you wanted to surprise him w/ something home made since he’d probably like it more than store bought gifts

First u convinced him to take a photo w/ you which was easy cause he’s rlly eager to spend time with u

And then, over the month leading to his birthday, you painted the photo and it was kinda hard to keep away from him

He always came over to ur house after school and the artwork needs to dry but it would be spotted by him

You messed up a few times and there were a few minor smudge marks

Noya became very sus of you since you were rejecting more dates and stuff than usual

You felt rlly bad to see him upset, but u told urself it was for a good purpose

So finally on his b day, you hand him the painting which has sweet words written around the frame

He bursts into tears from joy and hugs you tightly, trying to spin u around like in the romance movies he’s being watching with Tanaka

That failed tho, so both of u fell to the ground

Honestly u weren’t expecting him to be so pouty

“Is that why you haven’t been letting me come to ur house as much?”

“Yeah, sorry bby, I just wanted to keep it a surprise.”

He grinned and held the painting close to him inn appreciation

Tanaka heard that you were going to have a merch store

He wanted to help with the design of the items to appear ‘cool’ as if he wasn’t already cool enough

So he came up with this design of a bald egg with lipstick and a cowboy hat

Honestly, if he wasn’t ur boyfriend, when he handed you his design, you would’ve immediately chucked it out

It was uhm pretty bad, sorry Tanaka

But none the less, you took it to appreciate his efforts and t would be just plain mean if u threw away his efforts like that

So the next week you sold T-shirts with that design

Surprisingly, that design was sold the most out of everything!

So in the future, you forced Tanaka to design more stuff for your merch store

At first he was so pleased

But after a week or so, he realised how hard this job was and how time consuming

So he quit, which you were a bit disappointed about but respected his decisions anyways :D
