Sometimes i am painfully aware that i do speak in “therapy speak” but that’s possibly because i have been in actual real therapy for over 6 years now and when someone is struggling i find myself echoing what my therapist(s) has said to me when i was similarly struggling.

But god does it drive me insane when people who have just, zero grasp of anything use their interpretation of “therapy speak” to try and shape every interaction into this fragile balancing act with two outcomes, either you bend for them or they are the victim. It feels so controlling and manipulative and i dont think these people understand that they are holding the people around them to such impossibly high standards that they are punishing them for trying to be close and interact. It becomes so clinical and void of humanity. no relationship is flawless, so please stop using this language that you dont understand that is incredibly weighted to punish friends for having flaws.

Thinking about this again because Twitter has me thinking about it. I'm not sure when this nuclearization of the found family trope began but there was definitely a spike in it around Covid. People insist on found family following traditional family roles but that's just not how the trope fundamentally works.

If you think about your own friendship dynamics you will find that they're not very clear cut because affection and relationships in general aren't as clear cut as media tends to represent it. All relationships are inherently messy and platonic love can be as powerful as romance.

Found family is family that you establish, that you feel close with, that you make. It's not a family forged through adoption or legal ties. It's going to be messy because people are messy. The Nuclear family doesn't work for a lot of superhero families and as I read through Impulse it's that much more obvious.

The core dc 'families' are made through connection to a founding 'hero'. Like you have the flash fam who tend to all be speedsters coming together due to that similarity and their connection to the speed force.

You have the Batfam who all lack powers like their meta associates who are drawn to each other because of their want to do good. And then the superfam who are all for the most part kryptonian iirc.

They are drawn to each other because they share commonalities but those commonalities aren't what make them family. What makes them family is what happens after they come together. It's the relationships that naturally start to form from close proximity. And yes, sometimes that means that one kids parental figure isn't going to be another's. But that's fine. That's good. That's realistic.

That's why I've fallen in love with dc superfamilies.

The glory of the batfamily is not that they fit into a neat little box of family dynamics, it's that their family is messy. It's because Damian thinks of both Dick and Bruce as his dad, and Tim is technically emancipated but still buys Bruce a card on fathers day. They all chip in together to buy something for Alfred on fathers day too because he's a butler but he's part of their family.

Jason is both their brother, and the uncle with a criminal record in the same breath. Kate is a wine aunt but also a mom for some of the kids. Steph is their neighbor friend but also sometimes their sister.

They'll try to kill each other, they try to hurt each other, but at the end of the day they're down to get something from batburger. They're vigilantes in one of the worst cities in America, they are not a perfect family but that's the joy of it

The most obvious and consistent issue with Sydney and Carmy is their inability to communicate honestly about what they are feeling when they feel it. Instead of telling Sydney that he needs her and that he doesn’t ever want to lose her or for her to leave him.. he drafts up a marriage contract partnership agreement. And to apologize for dumping the entire opening of their restaurant on her and to let her know that she’s all he ever thinks about… he gifts her a custom made designer chef coat🤣😩😭

What if we had a Hunger Games Rosekiller AU?

Evan would be from one of the wealthier districts, so when he's reaped for his games, he joins the Death Eaters

Barty is from a poorer district, but his father is the mayor, so he's had a decently comfortable life. When he gets reaped, he wants to make it back from the arena solely so that he can see his mother again

Both of them go into the arena, having only just briefly met during their training. They don't really know each other, not until Evan spots Barty and tries to kill him. Barty suggests that they team up, and Evan agrees

Evan betrays the Death Eaters, and together, he and Barty kill everyone else in the arena. They decided that, once it's just them, they'll do everything they can to kill each other, but things don't go according to plan

They end up falling for each other and develop a romantic relationship. When everyone else is dead, they're unable to kill each other, so they decide they're going to die instead

Of course, the Hunger Games needs a winner, so the gamemakers let both of them live

And the audience is mildly terrified of them and how they just went around killing people together and somehow fell in love with each other through that
