sasunaru, of course, is my on-top shit. i care about it a lot, and if it didn’t have any shippers, i'd be dead. the chemistry between them is undeniable, and they have many tropes that enhance their connection. i won’t lie—though i love the canon ships like naruhina and sasusaku (which i also enjoy), sasunaru has that special standard for me. it aligns perfectly with the romantic tropes in books and movies that i fw.

shikatema—for real, dude, who doesn’t like these two? they’re the straightest couple that makes more sense than the others who ended up together. malewife and girlboss wifey, for real.

sasusaku. i know some don’t like this, but honestly? nobody wants to hear an opinion (kidding)—i find their reasons justifiable. like, if i were sakura, i’d definitely let sasuke go off on his own. i wouldn’t chase him or cry for him—especially after he tried to kill her. i understand why he did so, and i totally get his character (i relate to him a lot). but moving on, i ship them—fucking hell. I'm sorry to vent in your ask box, but every day I grow to hate the malewife/girlboss concept so much. Not because I hate the idea of a soft male character and a more forceful female one, but because it keeps on getting used to box almost every single Godamn m/f ship out there into the same mould.

Back In The Day, I followed a bunch of livejournal communities that were dedicated to making fun of Mary Sue characters in fanfic. Most of the time they were OCs, but occasionally it would be a minor or only-named female character that the writer had transformed into something the community deemed ridiculous. this was Not Very Nice and I guess fairly sexist (though I maintain that the fact that these characters were almost exclusively female was not actually the root of the hatred, but nevermind).

so I'm very intrigued by how the tables seem to have turned. obnoxiously overpowered and self-insert-y OCs are not in fashion anymore, at least not in the fandoms I'm in (I wouldn't be surprised to learn there's loads of Steven Universe OCs out there, for example), but I feel like a similar root impulse is at work: i want there to be a female character I can play with, and I want her to have as much cool stuff as the existing/main characters have, so she can be their equal.

i think this feeds into the girlboss/malewife dynamic in two ways: one, needing the female character to be powerful/badass/as cool as the boys, like i just said. now the trend isn't violet eyes and powers unlike anyone else's, but having the only braincell and baby hold my flower. but also, because it's fandom and we love queer shit, needing female characters to be as cool as the boys by having a het relationship (if they're in one, which let's be real, they usually are) that can be framed as queer or GNC in some way. she pegs him! now it's not vanilla and straight, it's Cool!

the thing that was annoying about the Mary Sues that had nothing to do with their gender was the way they warped the world around them. they broke the existing rules of the universe by having powers that didn't make sense or were exceptions to rules that shouldn't have had exceptions, and of course they warped the other characters by becoming the center of attention and always having everyone else be obsessed with them, whether it made sense or not. this is what I find annoying about the malewife/girlboss as well. as you say, it warps everything it touches, turning both male and female characters into whatever is required to fit the tropes. if that's what people enjoy, then i'm very happy for them, but i'm with you in finding it extremely annoying-- as you say, more in its ubiquity than in the facts of the trope itself. but I also find it very interesting how fandom taste as a whole has shifted towards wanting to embrace and appreciate female characters more, even if it's often undertaken in a way i think doesn't actually demonstrate that much appreciation for who the characters as written actually are.

999 Week 2022: Junpei

I'm late for my favourite guy!!! Junpei is my favourite from 999, I thought he was such a good player character because he had his own personality and agenda while also learning through each play through - he might be one of my favourite protagonist characters ✨

I also genuinely enjoyed his interactions with all the cast (bar 9th man for obvious reasons), he got along with each person in their own way and you got the sense they also warmed up to him - his jokes and smart but dumb energy endeared me to him and now I won't let him go.

As mentioned I'm only part way through VLR (spoiled myself a bit) and haven't played zero time dilemma but I'm intrigued to see him in those games too - especially emo Junpei who boxed dyed his hair and now wears red contacts? We live for the vampire aesthetic.

Actually how I found 999 was because I remembered watching Jesse Cox play a weird game years ago with a kid with a sphere on his head, purple headed sad couple, girlboss and malewife couple, divorced couple, sweet girl, and Carlos. And legit only found it again this year, rewatched it and then realised it was a series - a delightful find 💖

My feelings on Daggerspiders “popularity” and shipping culture as a bisexual woman

NGL....The fact that Daggerspider is one of the more popular Bionicle ships (well as popular as ships can be in this fandom), being the most popular non matoran and/or toa ship as well as probably the most popular villain ship as makes me genuinely teary eyed. Not just because it’s my OTP and it’s nice to see others ship it, but also because it’s proof of something I am a firm advocate of. That that there’s value and potential in exploring m/f ships in transformative fandom spaces.

Because just Im tired at the idea that the only good ships worth exploring in fanon are gay ones due to how there's so much straight content on TV anyway so let us gays have our crumbs and make everyone gay when like...to be frank a lot of canonical straight content fucking sucks as most of the time it's either used as a narrative plotdevice and/or just there because the mandates force us to have pairings because romance sells even if the story isn't built to that. And as such canonical het fucking sucks, characters have barely chemistry and a lot of the time women aren't allowd to be characters and just ar"the girlfriend" or some narrative plotdevice to motivate the male characters

And since like 70% canonical het content in media that latches fandoms (basically geek media) sucks and transformative fandoms whole idea is to fix canonso why...not try to make m/f ships that like??? not suck. There's a lot of potential and a genuinely untapped market at explorin m/f dynamics. Yet most of the time fandom eeither goes "everyones gay no straight people exist" or even if there's allowed to be straight ships it's basically only the "badass woman and a sore loser wifeguy who respects women 24/7" and treated in a very "pair the spares" type of way as opposed to genuinely interested in exploring the relationships.

Now to be fair, good well written canonical het ships exist in media, I’m not denying that. Heck, I ship some canonical het myself if it hits my fancy. But not only every media doesn't have well written het ships, I really hate the idea that "noncanon het ship aren't allowed to be explored because there’s so much canonical het and we gays are barely getting anything" esp if there's genuine potential in the dynamic.

And just...as a bisexual. The idea that you are only allowed to ship het ships if 1) it's canon or 2) it fits to the very narrow definition of what's allowed to be shipped (ie a girlboss-malewife ship) and even then you can't really think about it or make content for it is...restricting. And while yeah these people go on and on how it's because "gay people aren't represented in media let us have this", it feels that as a bisexual it's robbing me representation In a werid sense. Since like it feels that these people are telling me "the only type of content that you are allowed to enjoy and find cathartic compelling are samesex ships and that oppositesexships are automatically bad because hets are evil and oppress us". Which is like. Yeah I like women. But I also like men. And so, it's no surprise that while I have m/m and f/f ships (though less the latter due to how fandoms for those are either very pair the spades or outright lunatic), I also have m/f ships. Because not only character dynamics and the idea of two people loving and adoring each other (or hatefucking, hatefuck ships are fun too) is more important than what gender those characters are for me. But also because me being bisexual means I want to see ships that reflect the whole bisexual experience. And gay ships, as good as they are, are just part of the equation.

There's also like how, one of the reasons m/f ships are rarer is because in most media that attracts fandoms (ie geek media or anime) majority of the cast are men and the few women in them are treated either misogynistically or as plotdevices. As such no wonder the women aren’t that shipped with the men as not only do they have shitty canonical dynamics, they're barely characters at all. No wonder m/m ships are popular.

So like the reason Daggerspider being popular makes me so happy is because like People don't ship Daggerspider in a completionistic "pair the spades" type of way. People ship daggerspider because they like the characters and their dynamic. Most daggerspider shippers like what we get in canon and wish it was explored more. There's a lot of potential and things to appreciate and wish they had explored. And like, this proves to me that, just because a ship is m/f doesn't mean it cannot be shipped in same way m/m ships are. It doesn't mean that there isn't any  potential to explore. It doesn't mean that you can't analyze it. Ships can be powerful, cathartic and enjoyed regardless of gender and to act like the only valid ships are same gender ones is frustrating. Especially as a bisexual woman who feels that fandom only allows me to practice one aspect of my sexuality rather than whole.

And this is all the more impressive because of the fact that Bionicle as a franchise is a cast mostly comprised of male characters, female characters are far and between. So the fact that, in a series like this there's not only a female character who is well-written and compelling,but that said character has a genuinely interesting relationship with a male character that's not explored enough because Gregs writing is like that™️ just...is a huge deal to me. Since that rarely happens in other series aimed at little boys (or even slightly bigger boys) due to what I discussed better even if said series actually were characterdriven rather than plot driven. And the fact that Bionicle, a series aimed at little boys where most women are either mediators or evil girlbossess and which sucks at making interesting relationships because the writer prefers to write characters in service of plot than other way around, still manages to have a compelling ship IN SPITE OF THAT and that people are latched onto it is so important to me. Because it proves that, if a ship has enough appeal in canon and potential outside of it, people will fall in love with it. And care about it. Regardless of the gender of the characters involved. And that’s the most powerful thing.
