Controversial take: I don't think Greg realized what he was doing by giving Nidhiki a "tragic backstory" and internal monologue.
For those who don't know, Greg has a few times stated he doesn't view Nidhiki sympathetically, instead viewing him as a selfish prick who only cared for glory and power. While not completely unprecedented in text itself, Nidhiki's orgins from Tren Krom Peninsula and his internal monologue in Birth of a Dark Hunter throw a wrench into this. Thanks to these elements is easy to symphatize with Nidhiki, and view his actions as not a mark of selfish assholery, but rather pragmatism and desire to survive. Nidhiki betrayed his team not because he was a jerk, but because for him it was either that or death. Nidhiki ultimately chose the act of cowardice, self preservation over the greater good. It does make him somewhat repulsive, but still sympathetic character for the readers.
So, Greg probably didn't realize the ramifications of what giving Nidhiki internal monologue and a backstory would do. He probably had the backstory just to explain why he is so shady and untrustworthy of others, and the monologue because it was from his perspective. What he didn't realize was that because of how they're executed, they imply more complex traits to the character. It is really easy to understand Nidhiki as a survivalist moreso than a selfish glory hungry jerk because of his upbringing, and to read his desire to be a hero as geniune than just a desire for glory. I don't think Greg completely failed portraying Nidhiki as a selfish prick (Nidhiki has a tendency for blaming others for his misfortune over realizing his own faults contributing to the situation, which is something selfish people tend to do) but he still comes across as far less selfish than intended.

Don't mind me!
Just,
Vezok: We have your Toa of Water! If you want her back-
Nidhiki: Which one?
Vezok: ... What?
Lhikan: We have two Toa of Water on our team, who do you have?
Vezok: The... Does it matter? Don't you want her back?
Lhikan: Obviously, but there's also a chance you're in for a rough day, so who do you have?
Vezok: Er... Naho. You care about her, don't you, Toa of Fire?
Naho: Would you like to try again?
Vezok: ...
Tuyet(already freed herself and armed with her sword and a dagger and basically had Vezok in a, "move and you die" spot): Rude that you never asked me for my name. I'll see you guys in a day or two.
Lhikan: Please, don't kill him.
Tuyet: No promises.
Naho: *Tuyet.*
Tuyet: Fine.

NIDHIKI, toa Mangai of air (2/11)
Perched high on the terraces of Le-Metru, Nidhiki watches matoran toil by day and keeps a keen eye for trouble at night. They wear the great Volitak and wield their air scythe with ease and efficiency--their time in the city having shaped them into a more cunning toa than they ever were in their homeland. As the years go on, though, they can't help but feel this work is starting to get a bit dull...
Nidhiki is one of my favourites. While I tend to favour the brighter colours in the LEGO palette--especially when it comes to toa--the dark green is so attractive.
#I was tempted to say this was the only one with a 'metru' colour in their palette#But if you can believe it#There is a lot of white and black present#Though maybe that doesn't count#Not exactly exclusive to the toa metru#Bionicle#LEGO#Toa#Mangai#Toa mangai#Nidhiki#MNOG#Mata nui online game#Art#My art

Hm hmmm. Nidhiki and Larsika? Pre-mutation of course. Just awkward fluttering since these two are not used to that kind of thing.
Idk what to call though but they try and of course Krekka drops in to ruin whatever mood there was. Lol
"You're anxious."
"Do I look anxious to you?"
"Yes."
"You're bluffing."
"You're tenser than my arm the second right before I hit three bullseyes at once."
"And why would that be, oh Great Lariska Reader of Beings?"
"Because you're terrified Krekka is going to barge in at the most inopportune moment."
"Please - that might as well be his specialty. I've had to endure it so many times I've unfortunately gotten used to it."
"Hm, but you were never with me all those times, were you?"
Nidhiki glares at her. She laughs at his piqued expression, running her claws along the side of his mask.
"Don't look so glum, Toa," she hisses gently against his neck. The way he shivers makes her a little more aware of his temperature and she fumbles with her own limbs for the fraction of a second, skillfully hiding her momentary clumsiness. "Try to pretend you enjoy my company, at least."
"I don't need to pretend that..." he mumbles. She feels foreign and strange in his palms, almost vaguely soft, which is by far the last word in the universe he would use to describe her.
The door bangs open.
A hulking figure looks around the room with a somewhat lost expression, eyes glancing over the two beings now crumpled together without interest as he keeps fruitlessly searching for whatever he so loudly came in for.
"What do you need?" Lariska calls out.
"Cannon," Krekka replies.
"That's two doors over."
"I'm going to kill him," Nidhiki seethes against her chest. "Mata Nui preserve me I will kill him."
"That you will," his partner sighs in a similarly exhausted manner as she pats his shoulder comfortingly and the Bruiser stomps his merry way out of the intimate moment he just crushed under his big stupid graceless foot.

I love how you have Nidhiki and Lariska which is this almost romantic and sexy aesthetic between two skilled badasses… But then Birth of a Dark Hunter has to accommodate Krekka, whom Nidhiki is more widely known to be partnered with, and Krekka sorta just clumsily crashes into the narrative while knocking over the tone. So you’ve got Nidhiki anticipating his emotional connection and bond with Lariska and then all of a sudden he’s dragged into the indignity of this Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain dingus.
Pictured: Krekka coming in to crash the DaggerSpider dynamic with his own contributions. I wonder if Nidhiki ever had a nightmare like this.

You ever notice how of all the characters Roodaka's pissed off, it usually seems like the Air Toa specifically have it out for her the most?
She's the reason Nidhiki got stuck in the Dark Hunters hanging out with an idiot like Krekka for the rest of his life, Matau hated his time as a Hordika the most out of the rest of his team, and Iruni came to Metru Nui with the rest of the Rahaga for the express purpose of killing Roodaka for what she did to them.
I'm not sure if this is an unintentional detail Greg accidentally wrote in, or if Roodaka just specifically goes out of her way to screw over any Toa of Air she comes across.

Ok I know that my takes on Nidhiki are usually some variation of "he's the capacity of becoming a good person and still has goodness deep down I promise" but can I just say how fucking disgusting Nidhikis threatening Lhikan by holding Vakamas life in line is. Like, thats just straight up emotional manipulation. Nidhiki is forcing Lhikan to comply by threatening hurting an innocent civilian if refused.
But what's even worse is that Nidhiki knows it will work. Remember, Nidhiki used to be allies with Lhikan. He knows Lhikan inside out, how he thinks and what he feels. He knows Lhikan would trade his life to let an innocent civilian live. That's just who Lhikan is, the perfect hero who prioritizes others. Nidhiki knows it will work. And that's exactly why he does it.
Just oh god Nidhiki can be so cruel I love him

Now that I'm watching the Droid factory scene from Attack of The Clones again
No thoughts
Just the Mangai fighting in a factory that builds Vahki, and EVERYTHING threatens their lives
Their enemies
The machinery around them
Heights
Molten Protodermis
Just the blorbos being in situations
