What is fern spotting?

Fern spotting is a game. The rules of fern spotting are simple:

Watch television and look for a fern to appear on screen.

The earlier in the episode the fern appears, the better!

If you're a competitive type and are watching with a group, the first person to spot a fern wins.

If you imbibe, you may drink every time you see a fern. But if you watch a 70s show, watch out.

You can fern spot any media you choose, but the show that inspired fern spotting is iconic midcentury American crime drama Columbo. As my husband and I watched the show, I noticed that Boston ferns -- a popular decorative plant in the 1970s -- appeared in almost every single episode. It became an in-joke to shout "Boston fern spotted!" whenever we saw one.

I couldn't keep it to myself, so please join me as I fern spot Columbo episode by episode. Keep a sharp eye out for the ultimate fern spotting combo: Columbo himself sharing the frame with a Boston fern.

The bandages drawing was loosely based on the headcanon that polites was a medic (please ignore any inaccuracies). Some use this hc as an explanation to why he stayed ‘innocent’ throughout the 10-year war, since he wouldn’t have had to fight or kill.

However, I like this hc for another reason. While I still think it makes a good baseline for his mindset, but implies it can be more of a coping mechanism. Being a war medic does not mean one does not have to witness bloodshed; rather, they would have to see blood and injuries on the daily while keeping a level head and make hard decisions when choosing which patient to treat first even when multiple are in obvious pain. This role would have been a huge responsibility for him, and given his personality he would have tried his best to be the emotional support / morale for the patients. 

The war ends, and it seems like there’s no need to worry about getting hurt or killed, but every other soldier is tired and traumatized. It makes sense he would try to step into the role of healer again, this time mostly emotionally/mentally (especially for his best friend who looks very guilty of something he doesn’t want to talk about). So comes Open Arms. He knows it’s not always possible but wants himself and his friends to have hope for the world after everything. 

Plus it’s nice rpg game logic in a literal and symbolic way — kill the healer first and the rest of the team will slowly fall apart one way or another.

Is it just me or is there way less fanart being made for this game than the previous ones? Kind of makes me sad, I remember with dai I could check the tags every few hours and find something new weeks after launch, now I only can get away with only looking a few times and week and miss nothing.

I don't think that's Veilguard exclusive.

Things I and my mutuals draw now are getting less notes/reblogs than they did even one year ago, regardless of the fandom. Fanfiction is getting less comments and kudos on ao3 too (not that they were getting many comments in the first place) Less gifs are being made because gif makers weren't getting reblogs. Hell, most of the post I make have a huge discrepancy between likes and reblogs and add polls into that? A thousand people voted on something and only a dozen people reblog it. It's a hollowing feeling when you realise you're calling out to an empty void, I don't blame people for creating less art because of that.

I don't see a vast majority of the people who follow me in my notes because I have likes disabled. Multiple times someone has sent me an ask apologizing for spamming me with likes and I don't understand it? That is not a bad thing And unless you reblogged anything along the way, I didn't even realise you were doing it in the first place. And the people whose notes I do see are not annoying in the slightest, I love the tags you add and I'm sure the original poster does even more so

I'm not trying to shame anyone Into interacting with the fandom spaces they're in but the whole point of Tumblr and what makes it a blogging platform and not social media is that this is a show and tell website. You're supposed to look at something you think is cool and then wave it around for your followers to see and then they pick it up and do the same regardless of how old it is

When you reblog an ask game from someone it used to be common courtesy to send that person one of the asks from it. Folks used to leave comments analysing paragraphs from stories people wrote and theorising about what would happen next on every chapter. We used to send each other asks just asking about our ocs unprompted

If there's no interaction or community when you create something, then what's the point of creating it? It sucks that fandom is morphing into something to be consumed and thrown away the second it's more than a week old unless you're one of a handful of blogs that got lucky and picked up traction at just the right moment

I'm sorry for the rant but I get emotional when I think about the decay of fandom spaces for too long. And this goes without saying, but you guys can reblog anything on my dash if the button isn't disabled on it

I'm trying to avoid getting spoiled so I haven't looked up what's happening in the Jp server's main story, but for my own sanity I need to ask; is the story at a point where we know whether Lilia will get better/survive his almost-empty magic reserves..? Was it a true death flag from the start or only a plot device for malleus' overblot....?

not yet! I do think they're going to get back to it eventually, but -- keeping it as low spoilers as possible -- there's been...let's just say a LOT going on in the meantime.

hello american tumblr user. i see that you have reblogged the nazi getting punched gif and the clip of the nazi flag being ripped. that is all well and good. but have you checked in on friends and family members affected by trumps executive orders? have you offered any tangible help?

this is not to say that showing your support for anti fascism is bad, but it needs to be paired with action.

posting about trump removing the price cap on prescription drugs does nothing if you are not also sharing resources with your diabetic friends like the American Diabetes Association's article on how to keep insulin costs manageable, or pharmacy discount cards like SingleCare or GoodRx.

instead of publicly posting about friends/family members that youre worried about due to the ICE raids, consider sharing things like the ACLUs article on immigration rights and what to do if youre being detained. PRIVATELY reach out to any undocumented people you know and advise them to carry a red card so that they can quickly and easily advocate for themselves. maybe even do some research yourself and find some local immigration lawyers that they can use if they ever need it.

this is not a post meant to guilt you, it is a post to remind you that there are a lot of ways that you can make a difference. start locally, with people that you can reach and give tangible assistance. does your friend group have a discord? make a resources channel and share things there. take care of your local community as best you can. that will do more good than a tumblr post will.

One thing I wish I'd see more of among Ratio fans is some thought about how he views himself as a teacher.

Like yes, of course he refuses to compromise on the quality and rigor of the education he imparts, and he would find it unforgivably unethical to lower his standards in order to pass more students who had not genuinely learned the material. This is core to his character.

However, as someone who is a teacher IRL, I know the absolutely miserable feeling setting that kind of standard can cause. There's the obvious disheartening sense of disappointment ("Are students these days really not capable of doing the work correctly? Is our future in danger, if this is the highest level of understanding our current generation of students can achieve?"), but even worse than that is the self-doubt.

"Is this somehow my fault? Am I not teaching this material in the right ways for the students to learn? Is there something I could have done differently to get through to these students? Would a better teacher have a higher passing rate?"

We know that Ratio does (or at least did) struggle with feeling inferior to the Genius Society, so I think it is also likely, as much as he absolutely will not budge on his academic standards, that he has doubts about his teaching ability as well.

This is the man who wants to educate the entire world to cure the disease of ignorance, and yet only 3% of his actual students are able to get there. How can someone who gets so few of his direct students to a state of enlightenment hope to enlighten the whole universe? If so few students are successfully learning the material of a given class, doesn't that mean the teacher is doing something wrong?Would a better teacher--would a genius, maybe--not be able to impart their knowledge more efficiently and educate even the most challenging of students?

As someone constantly struggling with that balance between keeping academic standards high while also meeting the needs of today's students, I think the passing rates of his courses must affect Dr. Ratio much more deeply than I've seen fans discuss. I think he would question himself harshly over his class success rates, and I think he must be constantly trying to push himself to become the best teacher he possibly can be.

tl;dr: I hope one day the HSR fandom will stop sleeping on the fact that Ratio is an actual practicing professor who probably has astronomical levels of teacher angst. 😂
