Columbo S4E3 “By Dawn's Early Light” (1974)

No ferns spotted! However, this episode is remarkable in many other ways. For one, it stars Patrick McGoohan, well-known for his role as Number Six in The Prisoner, as a no-nonsense commandant of a military academy. He won an Emmy for his performance in this episode and went on to act in and direct several episodes of Columbo.

Secondly, it was shot on location at Citadel Military College of South Carolina ("The Citadel"), well-known for being sued by Shannon Faulkner, a high school student who applied to the at-the-time all-male college by hiding her gender on her application. She sued for the right to be admitted, and won, but wound up quickly leaving because of the abuse she faced on and off campus.

Lastly, this episode features a vanishingly rare sight of Lt. Columbo sans raincoat and, indeed, sans shirt. You're welcome.

Columbo is my comfort show right now and I literally only came back to Tumblr after a man year hiatus, just to see Columbo content. And now I believe it's my turn to return content back to the masses. (The watermarks are for my Instagram meme page btw sorry)

husbands playing disco elysium on the tv and one thing i really like about this game is how it takes the tension you as a player would likely have with the fact that harry is a cop and uses it to 1) set a mood and 2) create conflict

like its a really useful narrative device, you already have a sense of shame baked into harrys position even regardless of all the self destruction he went through at the start of the game bc being a cop is embarrassing, the best way to play through the game is to overcome your sense of shame and lean into being a clown, failing, saying weird things, crossing boundaries, etc.

but at the same time being part of the RCM is not exactly the same as the police in real life as we know them, they (and harry especially) are more like whatever would politically justify the existence of the fictional archetype of DETECTIVE (columbo/sherlock holmes style)

i'm on the fancy english theatre hams murder a guy episode (dagger of the mind) and fucking crying laughing at the one two combo of the police in heathrow spelling out the conceit of the show being like THIS LAD? SOLVING CRIME?? followed IMMEDIATELY by columbo throwing himself out of a moving vehicle to get a picture of the palace guards

they were probably right to not make wilson a recurring sidekick for columbo but i wish there was more of him. their onscreen dynamic is so funny every time

Post-finale, Dean finds himself going out on cases and running into hunters and people who'd been helped by Cas along the way. It turns out some of them know Dean indirectly, a la Ca's references and anecdotes. (They even know his music.)

Finally got to catch an episode of Columbo on TV and. I get it now. This guy fuckin' rules.

imagine suddenly getting into james bond movies, your husband talks to Pierce Brosnan or whoever's playing him next at work, and a day later you read a newspaper saying that the next bond film will be delayed a year

It must be hard for Mrs. Columbo to be a fan of anything. Any time she's into a writer, a movie star, a TV show, her husband comes home and goes "You'll never guess who I met today at work!" and a couple of days later goes "You'll never guess who the murderer was."
