Sweet, Sweet Truth
Poppy Sweeting x Nicki Dimitrescu (Hogwarts Legacy MC)
WARNINGS: Idiots in love. That's it, a useless lesbian in love with her classmate.
SYNOPSIS: Nicki has been wanting to show Poppy the Room of Requirement for months now. To see all of the creatures and beasts she's rescued from the poachers grasp. But part of her still wonders if she's making the right decision.
WORD COUNT: 3.4K
A/N: As I played this game, my MC quickly became her own character to me and I started using her name more and more and she is basically just an OC at this point. Kind of controversial but I really like this dynamic. Fight me, it's cute.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She always felt most at peace in this room.
Could it still be called a room and not a home at this point? She spent all of her time here, after the term ended and everybody returned to their homes, she remained behind within the Room of Requirement. While she could have asked Deek to care for her animals, this would have been time wasted bonding with all of the creatures she rescued over the school year.
There was something calming about studying in a transcendental garden inside of a room of her mind’s own creation, surrounded by all of the beasts she’s rescued from the poachers that roam the land across the wizard world.
She was so enraptured with the book she was reading that the huff of a creature behind her nearly made her toss the book from the small picnic table in front of her. She looked up and heard a familiar chirp as the creature nuzzled against her face.
“Hey, Highwing,” She smiled, reaching up to scratch at the white Hippogriff’s cheek who responded with an almost purring sound. She was forever fascinated with the mystical beasts surrounding her. Highwing was the smartest creature she’s ever met. Whenever the Niffler would approach her, the feathers on her wings would ruffle and she would prance in a circle around the curious little shiny thief.
On many occasions, the pink-haired Hufflepuff would find her silver-lain quill inside of the critter’s den and have to trade a real galleon with him to get it back. With all the coins he was hoarding, she could probably buy a brand new broomstick.
“What’s wrong, my friend?” She stood from the table and ran her fingers across Highwing’s beak. “Do you need to stretch your wings? You have all of this space, you don’t need me for that.”
The Hippogriff snorted, jumping a little as if to get her point across, stepping forward and nudging her face into the witch’s chest. When she chirruped again, it sparked a realization in the girl’s dark brown eyes. “Ah, I see… Do you think its time I invite your mom into this room?”
This was a long-time coming. She had been meaning to tell Poppy about the vivariums inside of the Room of Requirement for almost ten months. It was around the middle of October and the castle was decked out in Halloween decor and she did her best to set the mood in her little hideout, thanks to Deek helping set the ambience of a moonlit glow.
“Pardon me, Mistress Nicoleta?” The pink-haired girl looked behind her at the house elf who slowly shambled in with a letter in his hands.
“Deek, you really don’t need to call me that,” She smiled warmly to show her lack of irritation. She learned very quickly that with a house elf, she had to be very particular with how she worded things and with her facial expressions. Most of the wizarding world is so cruel to their assigned elves and forces punishment on them if they make mistakes.
“Of course, forgive me,” Deek smiled. “Miss Nicki, you have a letter here. The owl just arrived not a moment ago.”
“All right,” Nicki accepted the letter, immediately recognizing the handwriting and smiling at Sebastian’s signature on the envelope. “Thank you Deek.”
The house elf smiled and with a snap of his fingers, he vanished. The smile lingered on Nicki’s face as she turned over the letter and tore the seal open to read what was inside. The letter had the most elegant handwriting, as usual when Sebastian wrote to her. Sometimes she struggled to work out if he wrote an F or a J.
Nicki scanned over the letter, rubbing at her neck. He wanted to meet in the Undercroft with Ominis later in the night, which meant she would need to cast Disillusionment again to avoid someone seeing her out of her common room after dark. Though, come to think of it… when was the last time she slept in the common room?
There was a separate section in the ROR just for her to sleep. Set up one of the most comfortable beds she’s ever slept in and enchanted the ceiling so it looked like a night sky to keep her calm throughout the night.
Ever since those restless nights after Professor Fig’s passing, Nicki couldn’t sleep with the rest of her roommates in the room. She cried a lot, and kept them awake so she isolated herself inside of the ROR until she was able to stop crying… But by then, she was so comfortable alone, she never truly returned. And if anybody noticed, they didn’t say anything.
“Alright darling,” Nicki spoke softly, patting her hand against Highwing’s neck as she started walking towards the entrance of the aviary vivarium. “I will be back later. Stay out of trouble, and stop chasing around the Diricawls, hmm?”
Highwing scratched her claws against the dirt and chirped, almost with approval as she watched the pink-haired heroine step out and back into the main room. Nicki pocketed the letter and double checked her side holster to make sure she took her wand with her before stepping out of the ROR. Some of the students walking by noticed her, but simply nodded like this was a normal thing they always saw. To be fair, this was Hogwarts. Disappearing, and reappearing doors seemed to be all over the place.
“I know Poppy sometimes lingers near the front courtyard,” Nicki mumbled to herself as she strolled throughout the hall, taking her time to get there. Part of her was excited to show her what she’s been doing, but another part of her was absolutely terrified. Some of these creatures she’s kept inside of her vivariums make sense… But some of them?
How will Poppy react to seeing the herd of thestrals? Or the unicorns? What about the phoenix? Or worse… Nicki’s mind lingered on the Graphorn that has bonded with her. She attempted to return him back to the shores where he lived for the longest time, but he followed her back and refused to leave her side.
Nicki had to give him a name. He was powerful, an ancient creature of strength, and was considered a lord among his kind… Odin seemed like a fitting name. And he seemed to respond and like it so it stuck with her.
Her entire mind was plagued with these thoughts as she wandered down to the courtyard. She was tugging on the sleeve of her robe when she walked directly into someone. The impact was hard enough that the other student was knocked clean off of their feet and Nicki tumbled forward right on top of them.
Her forehead smacked against their chest and the student under her groaned with pain as her pink hair fell out of its usual slicked back style.
“Nicki?” Her face went almost the same color as her hair as she looked down and saw the exact person she was looking for. Poppy smiled, her hair sprawled all over the grass behind her head as she instinctively put both hands on Nicki’s waist. It felt like her hands were on fire; Nicki could feel the heat of her skin through her button-up white shirt as she sat up on her hands and gave a very nervous chuckle. “You always know how to sweep me off of my feet.”
Nicki chuckled again, this time in humor as she reached down and gently pulled a stray lock of Poppy’s hair away from her forehead. “Are you alright?”
“Well,” Poppy gently squeezed the girl’s sides. “I’ll be better when we aren’t on the ground anymore with… everybody looking at us.”
Nicki jerked her head upward and noticed that yes, almost the whole courtyard was staring at them both. She bit down on her lip, a nervous habit that had gotten so bad that her lip started bleeding sometimes. Her fingers dug into the dirt for a second before she scooted back until she could stand up and then held out her hand for Poppy to take.
The brunette accepted it without hesitation and was once again shocked with just how strong Nicki was. Her feet left the ground for a second and the fellow Hufflepuff began brushing off the dirt that gathered on Poppy’s robe.
“Well, this was a lucky coincidence,” Nicki smiled before reaching up and removing a blade of grass from Poppy’s hair, seeing the shorter girl blush slightly at the gesture. “I was just coming to look for you.”
“For me?” Poppy asked. “Did you need something?”
“In a way,” Nicki shifted her weight on her feet, trying to work up the courage to ask her to come back to the room with her. After a few seconds of nonstop looking at the ground, Nicki sighed and looked back up to meet Poppy’s eyes. The brunette focused on the scar over her left eye and was reminded of how her freckles looked like constellations.
“There’s something I want to show you… But I need you to keep an open mind going into this.”
The words sounded a lot less menacing in her head than when she spoke them out loud. And from the look on Poppy’s face, she realized that it was phrased wrong. Her heart sped up for a second and she reached out with both hands. “N-Not that it’s dangerous or anything! But, let’s face it… you can handle something dangerous.”
The memory of the dragon rescue was something the two of them always talked about. And then returning the dragon egg was just as dangerous, if not more so than the former task. Of course, it was all worth it.
“Alright, where are we headed?” Poppy smiled warmly, much to the pink-haired girl’s delight as she began to walk backwards, beckoning her housemate to follow behind. Poppy had to almost jog to keep up with the girl’s lengthy strides. Her legs were just so long that it was always a struggle for Poppy to stay in step with her.
They went up the staircases that Nicki had just come back down from and very slowly, she approached the wall where the door would appear if she thought about it.
“Now remember… open mind,” Nicki said, clenching her hands a little as she closed her eyes. Poppy tried to not look confused but jumped a little as the swirls of the iron door design began to appear right in front of her. When the entire door materialized and opened up for them, Nicki stepped forward, holding out her hand for Poppy to take. “Let me show you what I do with my time, Poppy.”
Oh, how could she possibly say no to that? The brunette put her hand in Nicki’s almost like it was without her control as the girl led her into the Room of Requirement.
All around the room, Poppy saw something new. Statues of mystical beasts in the open spaces, potion tables lined up along the far left hallway, and potting tables on the other side. Across the main room, she could see a staircase where she was sure even more wondrous things lie and up the stairs to the right were rooms with glowing light surrounding the glass enclosures.
“This is the Room of Requirement,” Nicki said, stepping forward and removing her wand from her hip. The tip of it glowed before she gave it a small flick and a chair conjured right next to Poppy. The girl jumped in surprise as Nicki smiled and then flicked the wand backward, vanishing the object in an instant. “It adapts to the needs of the occupant and allows them to have access to what they need.”
“Incredible,” Poppy stepped forward, taking in the room around her and looking up at the ceiling to see all of the books flying around and the enchantment that Deek placed on the room to give the illusion that the moon was always shining down inside. “Is this where you spent your time last year?”
“Most of it, yes,” Nicki reached out her hand and a book appeared within her palm. She flipped through the pages of her Field Guide journal and smiled at how Professor Weasley commemorated her completion of the book. “When I wasn’t off saving all of Hogwarts, anyways.”
“And rescuing dragons, and bargaining with centaurs, and searching for the golden snidgets…” Poppy listed off all of Nicki’s accomplishments and she tried to hide her embarrassment as she rubbed the back of her neck. “You were certainly busy last year.”
“You don’t know how busy,” Nicki placed down the field guide and began to walk towards the stairs, gesturing for Poppy to follow her towards one of the glowing rooms in the corner. “Which is why I wanted you to come here… there’s something I want to show you.”
Poppy was two steps behind her the whole way and couldn’t help but notice the scar on the back of Nicki’s neck in the shape of a claw mark. Very carefully, they approached the door and when Nicki stepped through the light, Poppy was close behind.
For a moment, she couldn’t see anything, and then when it all came into focus, she was completely speechless.
In front of the two was a massive beach. The waves in the distance crashed against the beautiful rocks lining the shore, the smell of the sea filling their noses. The sun within the room felt so real, so bright, so… Poppy walked backwards, looking up and admiring just how incredible the room looked. Near where the tide just stopped, there was a bench made of stone along with a lamp post. A scarf was draped over the back of it, proof that Nicki was comfortable enough in the room to leave her clothing behind inside.
“This is…” Poppy struggled to find the words. “This is amazing, Nicki… It’s absolutely breathtaking.”
“You haven’t seen anything yet,” Nicki smiled before turning around and pressing two of her fingers to her teeth. A long, high pitched whistle escaped her mouth and it felt like the ground was now shaking under their feet. Poppy instinctively stepped back and when the creature Nicki was calling stepped into view, she was shocked. No, not shocked. Poppy was in awe.
“Is that…” The Graphorn began to gallop forward and gave a mighty roar as he approached the two girls. Nicki dropped down to her knee in front of him and Poppy immediately followed her movement, not willing to upset the magnificent beast in front of her. It was the largest Graphorn she had ever seen before.
The beast stepped in front of them and gave a soft snort as he leaned down and pressed his nose against Nicki’s face. The tendrils on his mouth tickled against her cheek and she smiled, reaching up and gently petting his forehead. “Poppy, this is the Lord of the Shore… but I call him Odin.”
“How did you possibly manage to tame a Graphorn?! Let alone bring him inside of this room without being noticed?” Poppy gaped as Nicki reached down for her hand and led the girl closer. Without hesitation, Poppy reached out and placed her palm against his face and he gave an almost purring noise. “This is incredible.”
“I’ve done it with all of them,” Nicki said softly. “All of the other rooms that look like this? They all have beasts within… I even rescued a phoenix.”
“Nicki,” Poppy noticed the fear in the girl’s brown eyes and she stepped back, looking down at the sand gathering on her black boots. “What is–”
“Am I doing the right thing, Poppy?” Nicki asked. She couldn’t bear to face her friend’s look. “Am I no better than those poachers? I tell myself that these creatures are safer with me than out there to be captured and slaughtered for a price… but am I doing what’s right? Keeping them here against their will?”
Poppy could see tears in her eyes. This had clearly been on her mind for weeks, if not months… The girl clenched her hands into fists and looked as if she was seconds from breaking down in front of her. This was an incredibly important thing to Nicki. Poppy knew firsthand how cruel the poachers could be. Her family subjected the poor girl to terrors beyond her nightmares, forcing Poppy to watch innocent creatures die for a profit.
What Poppy endured was absolutely awful… And now here was her best friend, confessing something that she believed to be just as terrible as what she tried so hard to stop. What does she say? How does she actually feel about this?
“Oh, Nicki,” Poppy said softly, reaching forward and gently pressing her palm against the girl’s cheek. She looked down to meet her gaze and immediately leaned into Poppy’s touch, like she was warmth in the cold winter. “You are doing the right thing… These creatures are in danger out there.”
“But this isn’t their home,” Nicki said. “I took them from their homes and said I was keeping them safe–”
“And you are,” Poppy grabbed the girl’s face with both hands and gently rubbed her thumb over Nicki’s cheekbones. “They are all safe here. They are treated with kindness and respect by the sweetest witch I’ve ever known. You are protecting them from those who would wish to do them harm.”
“Are you sure?” Nicki sniffed a little, a tear rolling down her scarred cheek and Poppy swiped it away with her thumb. “I just wish to do the right thing.”
“You always do the right thing,” Poppy said, almost breathlessly. Her heart sped up as she stepped forward and slid her right hand up to the back of Nicki’s head. The short cut hair tickled between her fingers as she looked down at the girl’s slightly shined lips from the special salve that she’s been applying every day to heal the cracked skin.
Almost immediately, the brunette looked back up and tried not to focus on her lips and how she was curious about the taste of the salve.
“Poppy, I–” Nicki started, but immediately went quiet as she got even closer to the shorter Hufflepuff, her hands reaching out and gently pressing them against the small of her back under her robe. “I… I think that I–”
“Me too,” Poppy all but whined out, her knees trembling a little as she tried not to breathe in case it ruined the moment. She was so close… Close enough that Poppy could see the gold flecks in the girl’s irises. She wanted to close the distance. Poppy wanted to break this tension so badly, but it was like she was frozen in fear.
Their lips were centimeters away from each other. Nicki could smell the other girl’s soap as she huffed, her hot breath caressing Poppy’s cheek as she bit her lip again.
But before either of them could talk themselves out of this, a massive force behind Nicki had the girl stumbling forward and her lips came crashing down against Poppy’s. The shorter girl let out a squeak, her eyes widening as Nicki stumbled forward, thanks to Odin’s influence. The creature had enough as he shoved the pink-haired girl into Poppy.
It was like sparks all over Nicki’s body. Her fingers flexed, digging into Poppy’s back as she practically melted against the brunette who reached up even higher and threaded her fingers into the soft pink hair. It was everything that she had hoped for. And the salve on Nicki’s lips tasted like sweet honey.
The kiss was even more magical than this room. Nicki gave a soft whimper when she felt Poppy’s fingers gently pull on her hair and she broke the kiss, her face going a deep red with embarrassment. “I’m sorry. Ugh, that was embarrassing, I shouldn’t have–”
“Hey, hey,” Poppy released her pink hair from her hold and reached down to take one of Nicki’s hands in her own. “It’s alright, I’m sorry that I did that.”
Nicki rolled her eyes a little, chuckling as she held the girl even closer to body. “If I ask nicely, will you do it again?”
The brunette blushed before smiling wickedly, leaning forward once again and taking a moment to really appreciate the intricate details of Nicki’s handsome face. “I’ll do whatever you wish, hero of Hogwarts.”
“Oh please don’t call me that,” Nicki said, playfully making a face. “It feels far too excessive.”
“Alright, then how about…” Poppy pressed a kiss to the girl’s lips once again, taking Nicki by surprise when she broke it and grinned. “My fierce protector?”
The pink-haired girl’s eyes fluttered for a second before she pulled Poppy as close as possible, their bodies pressed together as she captured another kiss like she just couldn’t get enough of her. Nicki mumbled against Poppy’s lips.
“That works for me.”

BLACKWOOD BOOKS.
When Alicia Blackwood steps into her late mother’s bookstore for the first time since being willed the business upon her 22nd birthday, she doesn’t expect a thriving clientele to be waiting for her to re-open its doors. She is especially surprised to find that many members of the local community visit the store in search of books that are often outside of the norm, or even downright magical. Bronwyn Hawthorne has always dreaded the day that her favorite bookstore closes, or worse, is taken over by a non-magical owner. After the passing of her mentor and Blackwood Books’ founder, she worries that the new face of the store won’t be able to supply the books necessary for her catering company’s survival. Luckily, the late owner of Blackwood might have a few tricks left in her sleeves to help the store’s legacy extend for generations to come.

EXCERPT.
When I stepped out of the backroom, I was greeted by an ethereally beautiful person with curls twisting halfway down their back and brown skin dappled by sunlight from the cracks between boards covering the windows. She turned toward me and frowned deeply. “Who are you?” She said in a raspy voice. I gaped a little at her rude tone. “Um...I’m Alicia. Blackwood. My mother used to own this store?” My words became questioning even though they were true. “Er, sorry, who are you?” My eyes flickered between her hands, holding a stack of cookbooks with odd names, and her face, which had become less icy upon hearing my last name. She sat the cookbooks on the counter. “I’m Bronwyn Hawthorne. I run a catering company down the street. Have you...are you taking over the shop?” “Nice to meet you. Um...I’m thinking about it. My mom left it to me. I don’t know how to run a business, but I just felt like I needed to take over.” I looked down at the books under my hands. The top one was called “Magical Plants: Herbs and Fungi for the Average Witch.” I looked at Bronwyn again and laughed a little. “Wow, I didn’t know they made fictional textbooks. Um, you want to buy these?” Her face twisted slightly like she didn’t know what to think of me or I’d said something wrong. “Yes.” I swallowed and turned toward the register next to me to get away from the awkward tension that had suddenly erupted between us. My earlier retail experience came in handy, and I quickly navigated to scan the books. “Um...that’ll be $62.94.” I turned back and she handed me a stack of bills, then picked up her books and left without waiting for a receipt or any change. I started to call out but was cut off by the door slamming shut behind her. “How odd.”

Happy Pride🩷🤎🖤❤️🧡💛💚💙
Of course I celebrated by crossing off some queer titles from my TBR list! I listened to Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli, Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl by Brianna R. Shrum and Sara Waxelbaum, and Going Bicoastal by Dahlia Adler this month on Audible. My picks had a noticeable but unintentional trend given each of them are YA with Jewish representation, bi/les couples, redheaded MCs or love interests (or maybe not bc Imogen from Imogen, Obviously may be brunette judging by the artwork on the author’s Instagram…?) and 2/3 mention the movie,
Tumblr media
which, thank goddess they did because they had me finally get around to watching it.
But this post isn’t about movies, it’s about books. So let’s get into them.
Tumblr media
Imogen, Obviously
Imogen is surrounded by queer friends and family but she herself identifies as a straight ally. To show her support, she’s part of Pride Alliance, she loves queer pop culture, and she’s always there for her loved ones. Case in point, she’s also agreed to go along with her recently out best friend, Lili, and the lie she’s told her new, queer college friends about the two of them previously dating. It’s no problem for Imogen. Except when starts to get close with one of said friends, Tessa, and she begins to struggle with withholding the truth from her. She was never with Lili — she’s not even queer. Or is that only partly true?
TW: Biphobia, pressured/forced outing of a character, toxic friendship, gatekeeping, gaslighting, queer stereotypes
Opinion: First thing’s first, I’ll say its probably best to read this book for yourself rather than listen to the audiobook because there is a lot of texting. I was distracted (and slightly annoyed) by the constant mention of character initials and text timestamps within the narration. Other than that, this book resonated with me since I too was once a closeted bisexual whose sexuality was never once questioned because we were all convinced I was straight (curse comphet). Once it dawned on me I am in fact, not straight, it made so much sense looking back. It’s no surprise I’ve also experienced biphobia since coming out. I couldn’t relate to everything in the book; I’ve never found my own Tessa (I love her character) and I’ve never had a queer circle of my own. None of that stopped me from enjoying the story, however, and I can see this book making an impact on others. Especially the next generation.
Tumblr media
Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl
Baby, closeted lesbian, Margo, gets lessons from out-and-proud bisexual, Abbie, on how to “ace” being ✨gay✨ and discovers a new friendship with her experienced mentor, as well as her growing feelings for the girl of her dreams.
TW: Biphobia, homophobia, toxic friendship, gatekeeping, gaslighting, queer and lesbian stereotypes
Opinion: This book was my favorite of the three and I found myself relating a bit to both Margo and Abbie. There’s not much else I can say about it without giving away spoilers but I will say I loved this book and I highly recommend it!
Tumblr media
Going Bicoastal
Follow Natalya along two different realities, one where she’s living with her father in New York City and getting to know “the redhead” she’s had her eye on. The other, she’s staying with her mother in Los Angeles and warming up to the intern she shares a desk with at her mother’s place of work.
TW: Self harm, divorce/divorced parents
(Unpopular) Opinion: As a fan of Adler’s Cool for the Summer and Home Field Advantage, not to mention a fan of this concept, I was really excited for this to release. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. While it had potential, I thought it was kind of boring. It seemed to me more care was put into the mentioning of food than the plot. I didn’t develop much of an interest in the characters, either. It was entertaining enough to finish but I wouldn’t personally recommend it. Not over Dahlia’s other works and not over Imogen, Obviously or Margo Zimmerman Gets the Girl. However, if you want to, I encourage you to give it a try yourself and develop your own opinion. There are many other good reviews out there for this one. It appears I’m the odd one out, which is fine.

Here is part 7 of random books from my LGBTQIA+ book masterlist, where you can filter by genre, representation, relationship, target age group, and more.
❤️ Several of the books on this list are self-published or do not get a lot of recognition, so I thought, what better way to share than use a random number generator to grab 3 books at a time and share them with all of you!
💛 For right now I am focusing on the first in a series or books that can be read as standalones. I also try to skip over any that might be blatantly harmful.
💚 So what do you think? Think you will be adding any of these books to your TBR?
📖 Cantoras: ?/5⭐(Unread)
📖 The Stickman's Legacy: ?/5⭐(Unread)
📖 This is Our Rainbow: ?/5⭐ (Unread)
💜 DISCLAIMER: I have not read all of these books so I cannot attest to their quality or the issues that may arise in them. I have tried to note which I have or have not read. It is also highly recommended that readers check trigger warnings to decide if a book is right for them.

Bed and Breakup by Susie Dumond
Tumblr media
“Bed and Breakup” by Susie Dumond is a sweet, small-town, romance novel about Molly, a stained glass artist, and Robin, a chef, who accidentally see each other (seven years after separating) at the bed and breakfast they own. While attempting to go on their separate lives, being back in the comfort of Eureka Springs and in the place they built together, their romance rekindles.
I enjoyed the slightly slow-burn aspect of the romance and how each character opened up to show their insecurities about what went wrong in the past. I’m not a huge fan of two people promising to keep sleeping together casually when they obviously are not keeping it casual. But in this case, with their history, it made more sense. I enjoyed the experience of them relearning everything about each other and why they love each other. However, I will say the sex scenes fell flat and were basic and fast.
Another aspect I found myself wanting more from was the ending. SPOILER ALERT: They essentially renew their vows together (as they never actually got divorced) and the author doesn’t even show their dialogue for that scene! The book felt like a build-up to this moment and then it was just paraphrased over. So, I ended the book feeling like I was missing out.
Another thing that has nothing to do with the writing is the cover. I love the art on the cover and the references to things in the book, such as the title being in stained glass and the hummingbirds representing the name of the inn, the Hummingbird. My issue is the inn itself. The inn was clearly described as having four floors, or three with a livable attic. To have such specific details and then to miss that was odd to me.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to sapphic romance readers, especially fans of Ashley Herring Blake or Haley Cass.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for the digital ARC!

Stone Butch Blues, Leslie Feinberg’s 1993 first novel, is widely considered in and outside the U.S. to be a groundbreaking work about the complexities of gender. Stone Butch Blues follows the life of Jess Goldberg, a gender-nonconforming butch lesbian, from her childhood in the 1940s through the 1970s. Jess explores her transgender and lesbian identities amid homophobia, transphobia, police violence, gendered violence, classism, anti-Semitism, and anti-butch animus. Stone Butch Blues is considered a cult classic in LGBT communities, and continues to be popular almost 30 years after its original publication.
Many people pointed out that this book is free on Feinberg's website:

Zayne watches you intently at the breakfast table. He can tell you're nervous to see what mindset Sylus will be in when he gets here, but he's proud of you for insisting on him joining or you going home. With past boyfriends you had never cared this much. It was never because you didn't like or love them, more so because they did not care the same way about you, and you were tired of giving them everything while getting nothing back.
That being said, he doesn't like that you're just poking around at your breakfast without taking a single bite. They've got a full day ahead and with Sylus joining them, it may become emotionally exhausting. That's not a problem of course, but you should eat.
'Please eat,' he mumbles. You look up from the table with wide eyes, just now snapping back to reality. Thoughts had been flooding your mind. Everything that could've happened to Sylus runs around your head all at once. You are terrified of what you might see when he gets here. 'I know it's nerve-wracking to sit here and wait, but you need to eat. We've got a long day ahead of us.'
'You're right.' Of course he's right. He's always right. You finally take a bite. The food is absolutely delicious as it always is when you let Zayne choose the hotel. For a second he revels in your satisfied expression before turning back to his own meal.
'How do you want to do this?'
'Hm?'
'Do you want to take Sylus along for everything or do you want to chance the schedule?'
'Let's just keep to the schedule. I really had to fight him on coming here so I think the last thing he would want is to feel like he's keeping me from doing what I want,' you explain to Zayne, who nods along with your words.
'Sounds like a plan.' He gets up from his seat and you notice he's already done eating. 'If you're okay with it, I'm going make a reservation for a restaurant.' You nod. He's got a point. Most places can usually squeeze in two people but three becomes a crowd. 'Make sure you finish your breakfast. Doctor's orders.' Your lips pull into a smile for the first time today as you nod in agreement once more.
'Thank you, Zayne. For understanding.'
'Of course.' He walks off, heading back to the room while you finish munching on your breakfast and staring out the window. Your phone is next to your plate and you've been waiting for Sylus to send an update on his whereabouts. He was texting you very early this morning that he couldn't sleep so that he would just head out so he could be there in the morning. He could be arriving at any moment.
That's when you hear the rumbling of a motorcycle outside. Excited, you quickly shove your breakfast into your mouth and run towards the lobby where you wait for him to park his bike and head inside. It just takes a few minutes before he come sauntering in wearing his motorcycle gear, his helmet swinging in his hand, saddlebags thrown over his shoulder. You almost have to take a moment to compose yourself. Your man looks so handsome.
'Sylus,' you call. He looks over and smiles, seemingly shedding all his worries the second he sees you. You run over to him and hug his waist. His free arm wraps around you and you feel his lips on top of your head.
'Thank you,' he whispers as you feel his body soften underneath your touch. Whatever happened must've shaking him up quite a bit for him to be so tense. You decide against asking about it for now.
'Come on, let me show you our room.' You take his hand and start dragging him towards the elevators.
'Our room? I thought you would be sharing a room with Doctor Zayne?'
'No, Zayne likes his privacy, so we get separate rooms.'
'I like the sound of that,' he teases, shaking your hand off and wrapping his arm around your shoulders. 'And Doctor Zayne is truly alright with all this?' You nod enthusiastically as you press the button to the sixth floor. He smiles ever so slightly and leans down to press a kiss on your lips. 'You are the best damn thing that has ever happened to me.'
'Sylus, you are wonderful. You deserve everything good that comes your way.'
'You are too kind, sweetie.' The elevator dings at your floor.
'I am,' you agree. 'Come on, let's drop your stuff off and tell Zayne that you're here.' He stiffens up a little bit again but does let himself be led by you. You notice his hesitation and stop in your tracks. 'Sylus, I don't know what your history is with Zayne but you should know that he takes patient confidentiality very seriously if it has anything to do with that. He hasn't told me anything nor will he ever tell me anything that goes on inside hospital walls.'
That seems to do it and he follows you inside the room. 'This is nice,' he notes as he drops his things and looks around the room.
'Oh, you know, maybe get changed first. We're going on a hike in a bit. I'll go tell Zayne you're here.' You almost rush out of the room again but he grabs your wrist and pulls you into his chest like you're light as a feather. His eyes look at you so intensely, so full of love.
'Let me just hold you for a second.' You give him your consent by wrapping your arms around his waist once more and holding him as close as you physically can while resting your head against his chest. You feel him lean his head on top of yours as his breathing slowly becomes steadier and his heartbeat slows down as he slowly sways with you. 'Thank you.'
'You already said that.'
'I know.'
∘₊✧───────────────────────────────────────✧₊∘
The only thing you did not account for when inviting Sylus along is that you are now not on a trip with one tall man, but with two. The hike feels like a run, walking around town feels like a hike, and your neck fucking hurts. But at least your two favorite people are getting along great.
You groan as the three of you finally sit down at the restaurant. Your legs are tingling from all the walking and running. The two men sit across from each other, and you sit at the head of the small table. Zayne picked a fairly nice restaurant but nothing to intimidating. It's something that you would have picked too.
'Doctor Zayne, I want to thank you again for letting me come along,' Sylus says as if he hasn't said it at least five times today. Zayne shakes his head with a laugh.
'Please, just call me Zayne.'
'Sorry. Hard to get it out of my system.' He looks over at you, sitting there with a self-satisfied grin while looking at them interact. 'You're enjoying yourself.'
'It's hard not to. My two favorite men get along. That's something to enjoy,' you tell him. He huffs a laugh in response. Zayne chuckles and pats Sylus hand.
'I'm glad I finally have someone to take her off my hands.'
'Hey, don't say it like that. I am lovely,' you playfully argue as you gently nudge Zayne's shoulder. Sylus can't help but stare at you with a lovesick look on his face. He just loves watching you, loves seeing you happy, loves you. Despite all of that, there's a stinging in his chest. His situation changed yesterday, which might mean changing the relationship you have with each other. He'll enjoy it for as long as it lasts.
'It's no trouble,' he replies to Zayne's joke, 'I'd gladly take her off your hands any time.'
'You two need to stop talking about me like I'm a burden,' you warn with a teasing grin. You quickly notice the mischievous glint in Sylus eyes as he leans his elbows on the table and folds his hands together, pretending to exclude you from the conversation.
'Say, Zayne, how did you deal with her constantly being at your door?'
'Excuse me,' you exclaim, pretending to be offended.
'Oh, I was barely home because of work so she was barely at my door. The texts though,' Zayne goes along with the joke, a small smile playing on his lips.
'Rude,' you huff.
'See, the texts I can handle. It's the constant knocking.'
'I don't knock at your door all the time.'
'Well, it's your problem now.'
'You guys are being mean. How about I leave you on your date and I'll go home,' you suggest, keeping up the offended act as you pretend to get up. Sylus quickly grabs your wrist as you are standing and pulls you down far enough to press a quick kiss on your lips.
'I'd never betray you for some man,' he whispers to you. It's a joke, all of it is still a joke, but the words come out so sincere. You sit back down with a pretend pout and cross your arms. 'Alright, what will it take for you to smile again?'
'Nothing. I'm never smiling again.'
'You sure?' You notice his hand inching closer to your stomach. He is going to try and tickle you.
'Woah, no, stop, don't do it. I'll smile. Look, big smile.' You pull the biggest smile on your face. Zayne chuckles as Sylus grabs your hand and presses a kiss to your knuckles.
'I prefer you like this,' he whispers, hoping that Zayne can't hear it. He can and he is truly happy for you and Sylus. He's almost gleaming seeing that you have found someone that truly loves you and that Sylus has found someone to love him unconditionally. It's perfect.
'Hi, my name is Simone. I'll be your server. Did we know what we want to drink yet?' All three of you look up at the waitress a little dumbfounded. Well, except for Zayne. He's the only one who's been looking over the menu.
'A bottle of still water for the table please. She'll have a glass of vermentino. What do you want Sylus?' You notice the way the waitress is looking between the two men you are with and then at you. She's very pretty and you trust Sylus, but you really don't feel like seeing him get flirted with all night. While Sylus quickly glances over the menu, you take his hand that was laying on the table.
'Do you want to share a bottle of wine, Sylus?' He leans towards you so the waitress can't hear your little conversation.
'Sweetie, you are drunk after three glasses of wine, besides I prefer red,' he says with a grin. Clearly he has noticed the way the waitress was looking at him and your slightly possessive nature. It feels like a whirlpool of mixed emotions in his stomach. He remembers how possessive his ex used to be and he knows you're not like that, at the same time he kind of likes it when you do it. He has to remind himself that it's a completely different situation. 'And I only have eyes for you.' He turns back to the waitress. 'I'll have a glass of the Hacienda Monasterio.'
'I'm sorry, that wine only goes by the bottle.'
'Can we take the bottle if we don't finish it?'
'Yes, but I do have to note it's an expensi-'
'Then it's not a problem.' You try to glance at the wine list to see the price, but he returns it to the waitress before you can see.
'Alright, I'll go get those drinks and I'll take your food order when I come back.' The waitress almost turns, but decides she has one more thing to say. 'Also, I saw you get a bit uncomfortable so I feel the need to say this,’ she says as she looks at you with a kind smile, 'I am a lesbian.'
Zayne almost bursts out in laughter, Sylus puts his hand in front of his mouth to hide his smile, and you just sit there catching flies with your mouth. Zayne pinches your thigh to snap you out of it and you quickly apologize. 'I am so sorry. It's just-'
'No, no, I get it,' Simone says with a smile, 'he's very attractive, as are you. I was just trying to figure out if you were friends or a polycule.' Sylus can't hold it anymore. He tries to bite down on his teeth to keep his laughter from coming out but it fails terribly, as is Zayne. You don't quite know what to say but you suddenly really like this waitress, and you will be flirting with her to tease Sylus.
'We are not a polycule. He is my boyfriend and that is my best friend,' you explain. She nods and bites her lip a little. 'Why? Were you hoping there was space for one more.'
She chuckles, seeing where you're going with your joke. Teasingly, she brushes a few loose strands of hair behind her ear. 'I mean.' The two of you burst out laughing together at the dumbfounded faces of the men at the table. 'Okay, okay, I'm getting those drinks because I might die of laughter if I stay here.'
'Thank you Simone.' You turn to Sylus, who now looks a little conflicted. 'What?'
'Are you also into women?'
'Why do you ask?'
∘₊✧───────────────────────────────────────✧₊∘
Sylus paid for the whole dinner as a thank you to Zayne for allowing him to come along. Also, he did not want either of you to pay for an expensive bottle of wine he planned to finish at home.
When you came back to the hotel, you had a long talk about sexuality and boundaries in the bathroom while you shower and he brushes his teeth and does his skincare. Normally, Sylus and you shower together. That's what you have been doing for the past few weeks at least but today feels different. There's a distance between you two that you can't quite put your finger on. You figure it has something to do with what happened to him yesterday, but he won't tell you anything.
As you sit on the bed dressed in one of Sylus’ shirts that you stole recently, reading your book, you listen to the shower turn off. You wonder if he'll feel comfortable sleeping with you in one bed if he doesn't feel comfortable taking a shower with you. It's almost as if you're meeting him for the first time all over again.
The words on the page you're reading don't seem to come through in your mind. You keep rereading the same passage, trying to keep your mind on the page. It doesn't help. Thoughts are racing through your mind faster than you can keep up with. Worst case scenarios keep popping up and you have to convince yourself he'd tell you if it came to that.
Not that it works. He has barely told you anything about his past, nor why he had a panic attack a few months back. It seems he keeps his secrets close to his chest where they can only hurt him, but he should know by now that nothing could make you run away.
The bathroom door unlocks and Sylus steps out. He's only wearing boxers and is lazily drying his hair with a towel. For a second, he stops in his tracks when he sees you in his shirt and you notice the slightest twitch of his lips into a smile.
You close your book as he throws the towel in a corner and approaches the bed. The worries you had melt away when he slips under the covers with you and pulls you into him. His arms wrap around you like you're his safety blanket and his head is against your shoulder. You instinctively start scratching his head with your one hand and put the other on his skin as your legs slot between his.
It takes mere seconds for his breathing to slow down. He must've been exhausted. He did tell you he couldn't sleep last night but he didn't let it be known that he was tired all day.
'Sylus?' He hums in response, the rumble going through his chest. 'You know there is nothing you could tell me that would scare me away, right?' He doesn't respond, but his arms tighten around you. 'I love you.'
It's the first time you've said it and you've been scared to do so. The last person you told you loved them thoroughly explained that they didn't love you back, so not hearing him say something right away is nerve-wracking. Sylus looks up at you and presses a kiss to the underside of your jaw, pulling you impossibly close as if he wants to absorb you into his very being.
'I love you too.'
