"Rewilding in Scotland has created a more than 400% increase in jobs, research has found amid calls for it to continue.

Research by Rewilding Britain shows 35 jobs have been created at one site alone in the Highlands since 2008.

The research found there has been a 412% increase in jobs at 13 major rewilding projects covering almost 60,000 hectares, including sites owned or managed by charities, communities, private landowners, and public bodies.

Full-time equivalent jobs across the sites increased from 24 before rewilding to 123, across sectors including hospitality, estate management, ecology, environmental monitoring, rewilding interventions, recreation, and education.

The largest recorded rise in jobs was at Trees for Life’s 4,000-hectare Dundreggan estate near Loch Ness in the Highlands, a former deer stalking estate.

Since 2008, some 35 jobs have been created in addition to the sole previous position, while volunteer numbers have risen from zero to 100.

A rewilding centre was opened at the site last year and an open invitation has been extended to Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio to visit it after he backed a campaign for Scotland to become the world’s first “rewilding nation”.

All the sites are more than 100 hectares in size and are part of the Rewilding Network managed by Rewilding Britain.

The research found combined volunteer numbers at the sites increased from zero to 435...

The Scottish Government has been urged to commit to nature recovery across 30% of land by restoring habitats including peatlands, native woodlands, wetlands, rivers and seas, with no loss of productive farmland.

Kevin Cumming, rewilding director at Rewilding Britain and deputy convener of the Scottish Rewilding Alliance, said: “These remarkable job creation figures show how rewilding can turbo-charge social and economic benefits, while offering hope for reversing biodiversity loss and tackling climate breakdown.

“This is yet another powerful illustration of why the Scottish Government should declare Scotland a rewilding nation.

“The opportunity is huge – for jobs and local economies, better health, food production, access to fresh water and clean air.”

The alliance’s Rewilding Nation Charter – including representations from more than 20 organisations – has been signed by thousands of people since it launched in the spring.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “Restoring Scotland’s natural environment is a key way that we can help address the twin challenges of nature loss and climate change, including many of the interventions championed by the Scottish Rewilding Alliance.

“We welcome this evidence of employment in rural communities and will consider this research as we continue to work towards our commitment to protect and restore 30% of Scotland’s land and seas for nature.

“Our £65 million Nature Restoration Fund has committed nearly £40 million since 2021 to unlock the full potential that nature restoration projects can bring to communities.

“The fund has supported local businesses, helped landowners with pollinator projects to boost food production and supported improved access to green spaces throughout Scotland, alongside restoration of our marine environment.”

To give an example: We all know colonialism is bad. The problem is I've seen some people on this website (and twitter) say shit like "all tourism/travelling is a form of colonialism" with their whole chest. "Especially ecotourism." Maybe they're using Hawaii as a frame of reference and trying to fit a square peg in a round hole for everywhere else.*

Look, I am a dual national who grew up in Belize. The majority of my family is from Belize, including my mum. Specifically an island off the coast of Belize. The vast majority of Belize's economy is dependant on ecotourism. (It used to be agriculture, but that is no longer the case.)

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, for obvious reasons, no tourists were allowed on the island/mainland. The Belizean government was sent international monetary aid but pocketed the majority of it, which meant a lot of people were screwed financially. My uncles and dad sent some money home to extended family so they could buy food, as did other people's family's abroad.

It was a hard time. The country is back open for tourists again and thriving.

We WANT tourists there. Tour guides, dive masters, artisans, restaurants, etc all depend on the tourist dollar.

There is, however, another level to this, which is that recently a lot of rich Americans have been buying land and building homes there and trying to fence off the beach in front of their home, which isn't allowed. The government also sold off OTHER PEOPLE'S land to Americans. These are the people who do a lot of damage locally. They think they are entitled to everything.

We are happy to have tourists. Heck, we're even happy to have Americans moving there if they integrate with society and don't treat the place like they own it/take stuff that doesn't belong to them, but the other kind? Vile.

Having said all that, my point is the rich Americans buying Belizean land are enabled by a very corrupt government. I despise the narrative on this hellsite that all countries are innocent little places that are only made bad by White People. Our government is corrupt because they choose to be corrupt. No one is twisting their arm. Do you really think the bribes the rich Americans give them go to the people? Bitch, please.

*I'm not gonna presume everything I see online about Hawaii is true either. I don't live there, and I've seen far too many posts about various countries that are spoken through a western mouthpiece. Sometimes you have to admit you don't know shit about a country, and might never know unless you live there.

Sometimes I wonder if being a mixed race kid with dual nationality gave me a better perspective on the world. Like, it's easier to respect nuance when you're caught between two worlds.

Crying and vomiting rn because I’ve got the Romeo + Juliet (the one with Leonardo DiCaprio) love at first sight scene and combined it with the earlier mer ShockOp AU.

Senator Shockwave’s disappointed by Dai Atlas informing him the Mer are shy and tend to hide from strangers. Shockwave decides to stick around though since the base is full of other marine life he wouldn’t otherwise see. Shockwave’s admiring a particularly colorful fish when he spots a pair of optics.

Shockwave’s momentarily stunned by the mer he sees before him. It pleases him to see the mer doesn’t take off but instead stays to gaze back at him. The mer lazily swims to the side and Shockwave follows, the two never breaking eye contact.

Shockwave can’t help the smile forming across his face. Though the mer has a faceplate on, Shockwave is sure he’s returning that smile. He’s pressing a hand against the glass and is pleased when the mer returns the gesture.

Headcanons - she's a mermaid/marine girlie. Literally got this from the blue in her flat and turtle picture on her board lol. That her family has members from the Windrush generation. That she's from Hackney, like Freema herself. That her redeather jacket was a gift with sentimental value.

Fave things about her - how according to 'The Frozen Wastes', it is casually dropped that she went on a date with Leonardo DiCaprio. Her jewellery. Her flat. Her kindness. Her heart. Freema Agyeman. The way she holds the Doctor after the Master forces all his years onto him in 'The Sound of Drums.' The way she looks at him when she's herded onboard the Valiant in the season finale after he gets turned into the dobby Doctor. Her sense of humour. The way she's just so cool. The Doctor is so rude to her in 'The Shakespeare Code but 90% of his barbs slide off her like water off a duck's back and you can literally see her go "chile anyways -". The bass she put in her voice when Francine slapped the Doctor. She way she slid over the table getting the doors to open in the Lazarus expo. Her sparkly headband. Getting Chantho to swear.
