The Magnus Archives
Season One Notes and Speculation
Main Cast
Spoilers for Season One Below the Break!!!
Martin Blackwood- Helper for Jonathan whom he doesn’t like. Speaks Polish and Jonathan has disdain for his Latin. Claustrophobic. “Blessed relief if you ask me.” Jon about Martin being out with a stomach sickness. Martin comes back in MAG 21, Freefall with squishy squelchy stuff that Jon reacts to with “God- Martin!! What the hell is- what are these things?!” Ran into Jane Prentiss in MAG 22, Colony in which he stays holed up in his house for 13 days as Jane and her parasites kept trying to get in. He is invited to stay in the room Jon sleeps in during late nights post his incident. He feels stuck in the web of the archive. Jon thought he was a ghost in Infestation (MAG 39). He writes poetry and thinks tapes have a sort of lofi charm. It’s why he has the extra recorder. He feels incredibly guilty over leaving Tim and Jonathan in the tunnels, starting to tear up over it after apologizing in Human Remains (MAG 40).
Elias Buchard- The head of the Magnus Institute, doesn’t want Jonathan and crew looking into the Lukas family because they fund the institute. He hates Jonathan more than Martin and thought the parasites were an over reaction in Infestation (MAG 39).
Sasha James - Helper for Jonathan whom he doesn’t mind. Sets off the fire alarm to try and survive the worms. She joined as a practical researcher. Wishes she could’ve quit ages ago. She finds the table with the crazy geometric patterns and then the tape recorder glitches. Infestation (MAG 29). A feminine voice says into it afterwards “I see you.” The scream heard on tape is Jane Prentiss dying as seen in Human Remains (MAG 40).
Jonathan Sims- Head of the Magnus Archives, rather detached. This being said in Colony (MAG 22) he is shown to have started turning over a new leaf as he offers Martin his room in the archives. In Skintight (MAG 28) he shows an improvement in people skills as he treats the statement giver with a bit more respect than Naomi. He is adamant about not becoming another mystery, to make sure his successor knows exactly what happened. Infestation (MAG 39). Feels like he’s being watched when he records real statements. He also used to smoke according to Elias.
Tim Stoker - Helper for Jonathan whom he slowly seems to grow a distaste for, remaking he’s thankful for him being out of the office. He’s into Robert Smirke’s architecture as of A Distortion (MAG 26). Found tunnels in the archives and went crazy with gas to kill the worms in Infestation (MAG 39).
Other Characters
Sebastian Adekoya- Friend of Jared Hopsworth who delivers MAG 17, Bone Turner’s Tale. Died 2006, crushed on the road.
Angela- Witch from MAG 14 Piecemeal who slowly devoured the parts of Lee Rentoul and Paul Noriega through cardboard boxes with severed articles of various body parts
Asag- Fire mythos thing from First Aid
Sarah Baldwin- Victim of the Angler Fish (MAG 1) who later reappears in Skintight (MAG 28) being super quiet and also talking with a shadowy figure. She seems to remove her skin and then pull it tight and staple it quite regularly.
Breekon and Hope- The delivery boys from the end of one of the mags that give Jon a spider web lighter. Anatomy Class (MAG 34).
Antonio Blake- The Dreamer from MAG 11 Dreamer who saw a strange version of London and Gertrude dying in TMA FAKE NAME, KEEP EYES OUT
Edwin Burrowes- Catholic priest from Burnt Out. In Confession (MAG 19) he says a prayer in the house and feels heat. Then he starts to pray for himself and a demonic presence says through him “I am not for you. I am marked.” He proceeds to eat a human at the ushering of some unknown figure in Desecrated Host (MAG 20)
Michael Crew- Returned The Bone Turner’s Tale to Chiswick Library in MAG 17, The Bone Turner’s Tale
Harriet Fairchild- Went skydiving with Simon in MAG 21, Freefall. Said Robert was gone for 15 mins.
Simon Fairchild- First shows up in MAG 21, Freefall and tells Robert to “Enjoy sky blue” before sending him to a weird groundless realm. Robert Kelly is then later ate by the sky.
Raymond Fielding- Housed many people on Hilltop Road and was missing his right hand when he died
Trevor Herbert- Killed vampires for a living and died of lung cancer in the lobby in Vampire Killer (MAG 10). Dead as restated in Taken ill (MAG 36)
Naomi Herne- First ever person to make a statement with Jonathan and survived the Lukas’ in her ep, MAG 13 Alone
Timothy Hodge - Man who slept with Harriet Lee and heard her explode. DEAD AS OF A Distortion (MAG 26) for got turned into hive meat.
Jared Hopsworth- Friend of Sebastian Adekoya who assaults him consistently, first mentioned in MAG 17 The Bone Turner’s Tale. He, for instance, turns over an entire cart of returned books. He takes the book and runs out. He comes back later in the episode with more bones. And apparently more limbs
Mary Keay- Gerry Keay’s mother
Gerard (Gerry) Keay- Burns the Lightner books (seen in Page Turner) and was found covered in eyes and burn marks in MAG 12 First Aid. He puts a stop to the invisible flame.
Moira Kelly- Sees her son Robert Kelly get ate by the sky in MAG 21, Freefall
Robert Kelly- Simon Fairchild tells him to enjoy sky blue and then he gets ate by the sky in MAG 21, Freefall
Melanie King- Ghost hunter who sees Sarah Baldwin do her skin tricks in Skintight (MAG 28).
Jergner Leitner- Book maker and has a library, seen in Page Turner. Reseen in MAG 17 The Bone Turner’s Tale. Actually seen as a man in Old Passages (MAG 35) in which he asks people to dig underground.
Evan Lukas- Fell in love with Naomi Herne and then died.
Nathaniel Lukas- Owns the boating company for the Tundra as of Boatswain’s Call (MAG 33).
Peter Lukas- Captain of the Tundra as seen in Boatswain’s Call (MAG 33).
Agnes Montague- Witch lady with the hand tied around her with a chain, died the same day as the tree getting pulled down and apple melted
Julia Montork- Daughter of Robert Montork and witness of MAG 9- A Father’s Love
Jane Prentiss- Red dress lady from Squirm. She seems to be a hive for parasites and is no longer the actual Jane Prentiss as of Colony (MAG 22). She uses Martin’s phone in that episode to pose as him while trying to Squirm him. She says at the end through his phone, “Keep him. We have had our fun. He will want to see it when the archivists crimson fate arrives.” A statement by her exists somewhere in the archives. Hive (MAG 32) has her explaining how she felt itchy all the time and all the holes throughout her. “You can see it, and log it, and still never understand it.” Presumably she becomes what she is today after sticking her arm into the nest and screaming out in pain. She dies due to Elias making the CO2 go off in Human Remains (MAG 40).
Joseph Rainer - The man who survived the shell blast with Wilfrid in The Piper (MAG 7).
Maxwell Rainer- First appearance is MAG 9 in which he is described as the “defrocked pentecostal leader” who became a cult figure for The People’s Church of the Divine Host
Gertrude Robinson - Former Archivist, died, presumably in The Archives. Oh boy! So, in Burnt Offering (MAG 37) it is revealed her hair and image was used in some twisted altar thingy and a dude who smashes a bottle there has all his things go up in flames.
Lesere Saraki- Nurse from MAG 12 First Aid who feels watched after the incident in the hospital
Mikaele Selesa- First appears in Piecemeal (MAG 14) where he tries to sell something to Norigea. Reappears in Lost and Found (MAG 38) as he sells Andre Ramao a vase.
Michael Shelly- “How would a melody describe itself when asked?” He needs help, likes giggling at Sasha. Says that the hive (Jane Prentiss) is rash. Knew Jon, Tim, and Martin’s names. Shows how to kill the worms in A Distortion (MAG 26).
Robert Smirke- An architect. He worked for Jergner Leitner to build an underground club as seen in Old Passages (MAG 35).
Nathaniel Thorp- Immortal being from Cheating Death (MAG 29)
Places, Concepts, and Organizations
Breekon and Hope Deliveries- Company that takes away the coffin from MAG 2 Do Not Open. Also the same company that gives the church the pale yellow stool in MAG 20, Desecrated Host.
Formula of Sacred Geometry- The intricate patterns we’ve been seeing that Jonathan says there are different schools
Hill Top Road- The place where Burnt Out takes place, had the apple underneath the bleeding tree in the intricate pattern box
The Magnus Institute- Founded 1818, has a series of tunnels under its building and seems to slow the horrors when inside its building.
Open Skydiving- An organization that seems to have never existed. Fairchild’s are connected to it
The People’s Church of the Divine Host- A small cult that grew around the defrocked pentecostal minister, Maxwell Rainer, in London during the late 80’s and mid 90’s
St. Thomas Hospital- Had the fire incident from First Aid and the nurse still feels watched there
Speculation
My inclinations about the horrors having certain types seems to be spot on. You have the Leitner Tomes, Sacred Geometry, Prentiss Parasites, Breekon and Hope distinctless entities, the Hands, Strange Music- even if I’m not spot on you can definitely group some of the ongoings together.
As for characters, Jonathan is slowly becoming a better person as he unlocks the skill empathy by being subjected to horrors himself. I believe the Lukas family will play a big part in the upcoming season as Elias seems to becoming more of a big player and with Elias comes more talk of funding and whatnot. Something I’d like to point out is that the institute is most likely not a good organization as all of the tendrils led to the archives and even Michael seems to hint that the Hive of parasites are right in wanting to destroy it.
Speaking of, Michael himself is then drawn into incredibly questionable territory. He used the attack to rid the archives of his recorded files and taught them how to fight Prentiss. He wants the institute around which just confirms to me that it has to be a rotten group.
As for where the plot goes from here I’m not entirely sure beyond more Lukas and Micheal involvement. We now have the added worries of Sasha and her experience with the Not Sasha voice we heard as well as questions as to who killed Gertrude Robinson as WELL as why she was being used in the horrors rituals.
Now for just my fun thoughts- I adore Martin. I think he’s my favorite character. He has so much thought and empathy put into all he does. Like the dude was running scenario after scenario in his mind to make sure everything would be okay when Jane attacked- and it sort of was because they fended her off and saved Tim. Alexander J Newall also kills his voice acting- I love how timid sounding he is and the delivery of his lines to Jon about being sorry for leaving him behind- AAAGGH it literally tore my heart into bits.
Anyways that’s enough rambling. Stay tuned for my season 2 notes and ideas!

(14. Piecemeal) Statement of Lee Rentoul on the murder of Paul Noriega (aka dude asks for a flesh (?) avatar to take out his enemy, then when he kills his enemy the curse transfers to him)
(22. Colony) Statement of Martin Blackwood regarding a close encounter with the entity known as Jane Prentiss (aka martin knows not to fuck around and find out, but commits the cardinal sin of curiosity and is stalked by worms)

Magnus Archives Relisten 14, MAG 14 Piecemeal
All men kill the thing they love. Sometimes metaphorically. Sometimes by sending them to investigate scary jigsaw puzzle women.
MAG 14 analysis, spoilers ahead!
Facts: Statement of Lee Rentoul regarding the murder of his associate Paul Noriega. Statement given May 29, 2011.
Statement Notes: I relate to Lee Rentoul because I too am destroying my body piece by piece. I'm just clumsy, but there's a solidarity there.
This episode is a great example of what I call "Parallel Horror." This is a term I use to describe horror stories in which someone has a strange habit or hobby that is revealed to relate to a larger, more frightening reality. Examples of this are the taxidermy in The Landlady or Blue's interest in history in Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires. Angela's use of jigsaw puzzles doesn't directly cause her curse on Rentoul (as opposed to someone destroying a voodoo doll), but it does draw an unsettling connection that upsets the audience and builds anxiety.
There is an element of Angela/her curse reaching through time here. She is mailing Rentoul his own body parts before he's lost them. This means he knows what is going to happen, but is utterly helpless to stop it, building misery and hopelessness in addition to fear. This extreme level of reality manipulation demonstrates the extreme power of the horrors.
I would love to know exactly how Lee ended up cursed. It seems that he is either taking on Noriega's curse because he did not allow Angela to finish the job, McMullen turned on him, or Salesa is taking revenge for ruining his deal. This would require Salesa to not only know Angela (and possibly her relation to Noriega) but to also actively seek her out and make a deal with her. I like to imagine what cursed items Salesa could give Angela in exchange for a hit. Of course, the issue of the exchange makes this theory unlikely, because Angela requires something stolen from the victim in order to make the attack, and Salesa and Rentoul had never even met. Therefore, it seems more likely that Angela either acquired a claim over Lee when he killed Paul Noriega, or Mcmullen got spooked and turned on him.
The line "You guessed it" from Rentoul is just wild. Literally wanted for murder while being plagued by an unstoppable curse and decides to be cheeky in the middle of his statement. What a guy.
Genuinely though, Lee's intro in this episode is so strange. If it were Naomi Herne from Alone or Carlos Vittery from Arachnophobia, who don't have hard evidence of what happened to them and may be able to find practical explanations for the horrors they were facing, it would make sense. But Vittery is losing body parts every day. There's no way this his "mind's playing tricks," but he wants to believe it so bad. There's a definite division in the series between characters who want to escape what's happening them and characters who throw themselves deeper into it. Many characters try to "escape" by running, moving away, etc., but they still buy into their experiences and are plagued by fear. The entities feed on fear, so the people who find ways to walk away are more likely to survive. But Rentoul is stuck; he doesn't want to buy into the fear, but he also can't escape it, so he's going down in flames. Jon is going through the same thing.
Entity Alignment: Classic Flesh episode. Rentoul having pieces of himself "stolen" and being broken down "piece by piece" really conjure that gross and broken image of someone whose soul is ignored and turned into meat.
When Angela forces Lee to eat his hand, that brings the Flesh back to its center. The Flesh episodes usually work in the real and the raw and the gory. This episode utilizes deals and curses and magic, things that require a little more nuance and order. But when Rentoul eats his hand, that brought everything back to the Flesh's core message: "Meat is me."
Character Notes: Season 1 Jon everybody, the coldest mfer on the planet. Actually just tried to kill Martin. The note I have from when he said that literally just reads "WTF."
In all seriousness, Jon's canonical coping mechanism is to deny and reject things that frighten him. As far as we know, Jon's had one serious relationship and--in spite of the fact that he and Georgie are still friends--it ended poorly. While I don't think Jon had feelings for Martin in season, I think he recognized Martin's feelings for him and was anxious, prompting his outright rejection of Martin as a colleague, let alone a friend.

Mag 37
So the tapes have caught bits and pieces of pertinent conversation before, but it has always been in the process of recording a statement. This is the first time that Jon feels compelled to record information that is not a statement, just in case. It's not a coincidence that this happens immediately after he gets the Web lighter.
Also it's extremely funny how done with this Martin sounds from his first word. How may times has Jon forced him to go through the same sparse details?
I've said it before but it's great that Breekon and Hope just look like delivery men. No notable features, just big, wearing delivery uniforms and speaking in fake accents. Sounds legit to me.
Yes, but consider this: what if you got into the business of destroying knowledge. Maybe that would be a good career move for you.
What is Elias playing at, prompting Jon to destroy the table? If the NotThem gets Jon he'll have to replace the Archivist and restart his ritual prep, so why take such a risky move to try and secure a Stranger mark? Why bother going for a Stranger mark in the first place, if he intends to throw Jon into the Unknowing soon enough anyway? Maybe he (incorrectly) assumes that Jon would have one of his assistants destroy the table instead of going all 'extended sounds of brutal pipe murder' on it himself. Maybe it's a test of some kind?
Or maybe I'm overthinking it and Elias just gets off on watching Jon fuck around and find out.
First time Martin expresses care/concern for Jon <3 They've definitely been spending more time together off-tape. They've got to be basically roomates at this point.
Also the prompt of 'go to sleep dumbass' help us place this in time. I definitely think this statement takes place immediately following the last (instead of with the normal week long gap). Jon ended that statement running off to talk to Martin and starts this one obviously having been speaking to him for some time. In the gap between tapes he has also interrogated Rosie, spoken with Elias and presumably been to see the table in Artefact Storage himself. I think it's safe to say that during the interim everyone else has gone home for the night and Martin and Jon are now alone in the Archives after hours again.
If I'm right about that timing it means that this is the first time we know of that Jon has read two statements in one day (depending on how canon you consider the liveshow to be, and whether or not it 'counts' if Jon reads a genuine statement off-tape as he does in that show). We know the statements can take a lot out of him, so that's got to be contributing to his general state of exhaustion.
Also I've dragged Jon before for recording statements onto tapes that are already running, but in all seriousness I think that at this point the Eye won't allow him to turn off a tape recorder for good without feeding it. Once a tape recorder is playing, it must receive a statement, no matter how confusing it will be for any students or academics using the tapes for research.
I wonder what kind of reputation the Magnus Institute has in the wider world? We know it's generally a bad one, but also we see so many statement-givers coming to the Institute for help. Is that motivated purely by desperation, or is there an idea in the general public consciousness that if you are having a supernatural problem of some sort that TMI can help? We know that the Institute only exists to observe and record and helping people is not on their agenda, but we do have confirmation of instances where they have helped the general public. I am thinking of Piecemeal, where Lee Rentoul talks about how they helped a friend of his who thought he was being haunted realise that he wasn't. Maybe the Institute only helps in cases that have no connection to the Entities? That probably makes the most sense.
Very cool how this statement starts out as if it could be Lonely before taking a sharp turn into Desolation territory. It's not about how alone he is, it's about how much he has to lose.
I can't remember, is this the place where Agnes was born? I know this is the site of Gertrude's binding spell, but did she find the site of Agnes's birth to do this? That would make sense and explain the altar stone in the centre. But I am a bit confused by the trees. They were deliberately planted 50 years ago? The binding would have happened around 12 years ago, so Gertrude didn't do that. It also would have been before she was Archivist? I have no idea when Agnes was born (I have a terrible head for dates) but wasn't it during a forest fire that would have decimated this entire area? I can't imagine that those Lightless Flame freaks were planting new trees afterward. Maybe they just grew on their own because of spooky reasons.
So I happen to be in the car with my parents (two retired nurses) as I'm typing this and asked them what would realistically happen to a guy who drank boiling water. They both absolutely fucking lost it.
Mum: Severe burns all over his mouth and throat! He'd be in absolute agony.
Dad: Not his throat, you'd never swallow.
Me: It doesn't say if he swallowed or not.
Dad: You couldn't. Not in that amount of pain.
Mum: Only if it was literally forced down him.
Me: So you'd need to be hospitalised?
Both: YES.
Mum: Immediately! Your mouth would be absolutely ruined; you wouldn't be eating anything without medical intervention.
Dad: And if there was anything in his throat there's no treatment for internal burns like that. They'd just have to give him antibiotics and hope.
Mum: But he wouldn't have swallowed boiling water, that would be insane. It would just be his mouth.
Me: This says he just lay down for about half an hour to get over the pain, then he sort of just kept going like normal.
Both: Not a chance.

The Narrative Importance of Mag 14: Piecemeal
Mag 14: Piecemeal is important in a narrative sense to prepare listeners for the intensifying of the plot, as an enduring piece of mystery and horror in a sometimes overdefined system, and to shake up and defy that same system, preserving the chaos and inexplicability that makes The Magnus Archives what it truly is.
Episode 14 of the Magnus Archives, Piecemeal, is often dismissed as one of the weird episodes in Season 1, before the general themes were ironed out. It involves a confusing and horrifying death, and brings up a character who, to those experienced in Magnus structure, would be expected to show up again. Indeed, the other character introduced in episode 14 is Mikaele Salesa, who proves instrumental in later plot developments. But we never see Angela again, except for the mildest nod to her continued existence in season 5.
Some say that makes this episode a structural disaster; one of the odd, stupid, confusing episodes that give season 1 its unique charm. Even Jonny, in a Q & A, admitted to the episode being one he wanted to redo. But there’s so much more going on that makes Piecemeal important to the development of the Magnus universe.
Firstly, the statement giver, Lee Rentoul, is a bad person. This is very clearly stated. He’s a career criminal who spent several years in prison, and later kills a man and is happy about it. The statement givers so far have largely been innocent victims, or at least sympathetic protagonists. Even Trevor Herbert, the vampire hunter from Mag 10, considers himself a force of good. Lee Rentoul gives us, the listeners, a gateway into the idea that the statements we hear will not always be given by good people, giving us time to get used to the idea before doing so is narratively vital, such as a statement given by an avatar. Later statements given by avatars, criminals, monsters, or similar are usually filled with vitally important information. If the listener were distracted worrying about the morality of the statement giver, they might miss something. Piecemeal gives listeners a chance to get worrying over morally unsound protagonists out of our systems, and more emotionally prepared for the escalation of the plot further on.
Secondly, the eventual irrelevance of Angela and her assassinations reinforces the idea that Magnus takes place in a larger world than what we can see. In a different Q&A, Jonny laments the fact that to have sufficient payoff in the mystery department, concessions must be made in the horror department. So much horror comes from having no idea what’s happening, and that has to be given up as the story continues and the listener learns more and more.
A prime example of this is the coffin. First introduced in episode 2, the coffin is terrifying and mysterious. We end up knowing nothing about it, and the horror is maximized. Over the course of the story, we learn more and more about the coffin. By the time its arc resolves in season 4, it is well established as dangerous, but not the nameless horror it was at the beginning. We know exactly what fate awaits those who open it, and while it isn’t pretty, it is known. Someone skilled and knowledgeable enough can even escape it.
The occasional inclusion of incidents which are never properly explained provides the proper horrified feeling usually only experienced in first time listeners to those who go back and listen again. Even after 200 full episodes of information, we still have no idea what was going on, which keeps it scary and helps Magnus stand up well to repeat listeners.
Finally, the nebulous nature of what power is involved plays an important role in the later discrediting of Smirke’s Taxonomy. It is initially unclear what power is involved in Piecemeal. Initial readings might sort it firmly into the realm of Flesh, with the fascination with losing body parts. Closer or more thematic readings might pick the Web, for the strange pileup of coincidences, or the Stranger, for the strange woman who is never elaborated on, or even the End, focusing on Lee Rentoul’s struggle and fear of his inevitable demise, and still remaining alive even as more and more bits fall off of him.
But here’s the thing: It’s none of them. The idea of Smirke’s 14 as categories that every manifestation must belong to one, with only the briefest concession for combinations, is ultimately doomed to fail. Smirke’s Taxonomy of Fear is a useful tool for initial cataloging and categorization, but it’s just that. A tool. Again and again, the powers are highlighted as something chaotic and unknowable. Any model used to understand them is limited by our reality. Some statements fit neatly into the 14, which makes sense, as that sort of event would have to be relatively frequent in order for Smirke himself to identify and catalog them, which could be further elaborated on in an entire other essay. But it remains important to have the occasional statement that doesn’t intuitively fit into any of the 14, for the sake of emphasizing the limits of the system. This is also true for various other early episodes, such as Mag 4: Thrown Away, also often dismissed for being nonsensical.

[transcript: Audio of Jon in MAG 14 - Piecemeal, remarking about Lee Rentoul losing his tongue. He says, "I'm reminded of a somewhat tasteless joke about loose tongues." end transcript.]
[transcript: Audio of Jon in MAG 14 - Piecemeal, as he says, "I sent Martin to look into this ‘Angela’ character – not that I want him to get chopped up, of course, but someone had to. Apparently, he spent three days looking into every woman named Angela in Bexley over the age of 50. He could not find anyone that matches the admittedly vague description given here, though he informs me that he had some very pleasant chats about jigsaws. Useless ass." end transcript.]
There will never be a funnier line than these two, perhaps
