only tangentially related to this ep, but - i have an Avatar concept around the cold/freezing water/hypothermia and drowning, and Ive discussed before which Fear that would most closely align with. A lot of people said the Buried or the Lonely, maybe the Vast, mixed with Dark.
Water and cold can be hard to categorise, even aside from how the categories are arbitrary lines drawn between fears etc etc. Cause these motifs have shown up with the Vast, Buried and Lonely, and probably others on occasion too.
But I think the cold an sich, and cold water especially, are most closely related to the Dark. Just like how Manuela describes the darkness as not the opposite of light, but the absence of it, the universe's natural state; so too does she talk in today's ep about how cold is not the opposite of warmth, but the lack of it. Cold is stillness, quiet, numbing. Dark.
...and also;
109, Nightfall: "As soon as my foot hit the water, I fell into it completely. It was colder than anything I had ever experienced, and the torch slipped from my hand as my vision immediately went dark."
140, The Movement of the Heavens: "I gripped the head of my foul adversary, and forced it down, into the dark pool before us. There I held it, the water so cold upon my skin the marks have yet to fade."
143 Heart of Darkness: "... I began submerging the first of the sacrifices in the brackish water it had blessed with its stillness."
143 ,, : "There is another world, a world of still and quiet darkness, where no heat touches..."
Other Fears statements occasionally also feature water, sometimes even cold water (though it's always accompanied of a mention of how dark it is, too), but it's not as much of A Thing as with the Dark. And I think it's a cool motif which they should get more credit for!

MAG 109 Relisten
Activity on my first listen: putting up a new fence
Haha, funny coincidence! (I probably already said this in S1?) Julia's statement is MAG 9 and Trevor's (first) statement MAG 10. And now their mutual statement is MAG 109! Like... 9 and 10, 109?
Episode title "Nightfall" - On one side it seems to be late in the evening or already night when this recording is happening (the crickets) and on the other side it's of course a statement involving the Dark.
JON: "And, and, and if I run?" TREVOR: "Iā€™m very much hoping that you do." Hunters wanna hunt, not catch.
JON "I read your statement, you know, you, you donā€™t kill people. Only monsters." TREVOR: "The line gets blurrier every day." Daisy does the same. Justifying her murders with ever lower and lower growing standards to what qualifies as a "human". I wonder where Jon would draw the line since itā€™s something that bothers him?
JON: "I, I mean, yesā€¦ but the situation has changed quite a bitā€¦? Last I heard, you were dying of lung cancer." TREVOR: "I was." JON: "And nowā€¦?" TREVOR: "Iā€™m not. (heh)" JON: "And that doesnā€™t strike you asā€¦ odd." TREVOR: "Not much I see these days isnā€™t ā€œoddā€ somehow or other. Not gonna turn my nose up at one bit of it worked out well for me. I hunt monsters; my lungs donā€™t kill me. Seems like a fair trade. No big job, is it." There it is, the hypocrisy of the Hunt. The inability for self-reflection. Also I think it's unfair that the Eye let Gerry die of his cancer and Trevor was saved, that seems like a bad deal! (Yeah, yeah, something about choosing to stay human...)
JULIA: "What is it, do you think, that makes people so obsessed with horrific things happening to other people?" I know Julia exclusively talks about true crime here. Can't really talk about that specifically, cause I don't really watch much true crime stuff. It actually upsets me cause I know it was real. Especially cases that happened not too long ago. I've thought about people, who knew the victims, seeing videos on Youtube and how they must feel more than once. But there is a bit of an overlap in "fans" of true crime and horror and the supernatural (e.g. Buzzfeed Unsolved. It started out as a true crime show I think, but then got into ghost hunting). Have you ever noticed that there are a lot of people in the horror community, who have experienced something horrific happening to themselves? Some kind of trauma. There's a reason for that. On a meta level it's dealing with the trauma in a safe and contained way.
Just quickly throwing in that I love the crickets in the background.Ā  So soothing, the sound of them. Reminds me of summer.Ā
JON: "Uh, umā€¦ (nervous laugh) Yeahā€¦ itā€™s, uhā€¦ itā€™sā€¦ what do you do for money?" JULIA: "(annoyed) Sorry?" JON: "I, I just, I-I doubt roaming around killing things pays all that well, What do you do to support yourselves?" Capitalism is the real enemy!
JON "Uh, yeahā€¦ o-o-okay, uh, Mustermann, or whatever your name is" Oh, Jon(ny)ā€™s the only one saying Mustermann with the German pronunciation of the U - like moo-ster (m-uhn)!
MUSTERMANN: "Maybe not, but are you sure you know whatā€™s listening in?" JON: "Do you?" MUSTERMANN: "No. But I donā€™t like it." TREVOR: "Whatā€™s he mean, 'listening in?'?" It may be a coincidence again that itā€™s a Stranger pointing out the tapes and questions whoā€™s listening in via those (last time it was Nikola, MAG 101). The Stranger just really got a lot of screen time. Last episode I said I enjoy TMA providing canon explanations for.. just things which are necessary for a good narration. We already found out, why Jonā€™s acting his little heart out during the statement and why all those statements are written like the people have a degree in creative writing. And now the tapes are getting addressed more and more. Everything just clicks wonderfully into place and I love that in a story.

mag 109 - nightfall
i love julia and trevor as a duo. i mean, i have soft spot for duos in genereal (especially when they're both awful people and actively making each other worse), but they in particular are so great because i can't help but notice so many parallels to basira and daisy
i've already gone into this, but hunt avatars very much have a tendency to forge really really strong bonds based on dangerous situations without knowing too much about each other beyond that. we don't ever really see daisy and basira working together before their relationship starts to fracture, but i can very much imagine that, at its best, it looked a lot like this. there seems to come such a pack mentality with the hunt, even when there are only two people involved, that makes the avatars that serve it unable to self-reflect and instead put themselves in an echo chamber. one that daisy and basira manage to break out of but julia and trevor do not. i suppose it only makes sense that they're the ones that end up killing them

I tried to live a normal life. I really did. I took jobs working in the backroom of offices where I wouldnā€™t need to meet anyone. I had boyfriends who promised they didnā€™t care. I burned through half a dozen counselors. None of it worked.
You see, my fatherā€™s always remained one of the darlings of the true crime community. Articles, documentaries, grisly retrospectives: wherever I ended up, somehow it would always worm its way into my life. One of my co-workers or new friends would stumble across a profile of my father, and that would be that. Every time I ended up in a relationship, it was only a matter of time before I caught them on some true crime blog, or spotted a profile of my father in their search history.
Sometimes, I tried to lie about it, so there was no relation, but the damage was done. Theyā€™d get distant, throw me nervous glances when they didnā€™t think Iā€™d notice. Or worse, they started to look at me like I was some sort of prize, some small claim to fame: the serial killerā€™s daughter.
I suppose I could have changed my name. Um, something always stopped me though: it was the only connection I still had to my dad, and even if it did keep ruining my life, I couldnā€™t bring myself to lose it.
The counselors and the therapists were more understandingā€¦ but even they couldnā€™t quite keep the eager quiver out of their voice when I started talking about the murders. It felt like every couple of years, I was having to start my life over from scratch.
What is it, do you think, that makes people so obsessed with horrific things happening to other people? Even now, after all Iā€™ve done, I canā€™t quite figure out what it is that makes people treat actual atrocities like cheap entertainment.
Maybe weā€™re all just broken inside, unable to really grasp the difference between fictional people, and people we just donā€™t know. Theyā€™re all just abstract ideas weā€™re happy to have suffer for our enjoyment.
Orā€¦ maybe the fact it really happened is exactly the point, adding the awful spice of reality to peopleā€™s morbid fantasies.
When I think of the lurid joy some people would feel if I were caught ā€“ the serial killerā€™s daughter taking over the family business ā€“ it makes me sick. But even back then, with my hands unbloodied, that collective obsession with brutality chased me throughout my life.
MAG 109 Nightfall; Statement of Julia Montauk, regarding her initial encounters with the hunter Trevor Herbert. Statement taken direct from subject, June 29th 2017.
Okay, I know how it sounds, but Murder Club wasnā€™t supposed to be like this. It was just true crime stuff. My boyfriend, well, ex-boyfriend, used to call it my ā€œserial killer fan clubā€, which Iā€™ll admit doesnā€™t make it sound a lot better, but youā€™ve gotta believe there was no way any of us would have chosen to get involved in anything like whatā€™s happening.
Except, I guess, that we did. Somehow.
Iā€™m not a violent person, not at all. My sisters used to play-fight when we were kids, and Iā€™d always justā€¦ Iā€™d end up crying in the corner. But for some reason, true crime never had that effect on me. Or maybe it did, but I kind of liked it when I could control it. I remember when I first got the taste. I stumbled across a book on famous murders that had somehow ended up in our school library. I read about Lizzie Borden, feeling the breath catch in my throat, and I put the book away quickly before literally running out of the library. I didnā€™t sleep at all that night, but I still went back to that book the next day.
Itā€™s always scared me. Thatā€™s the thing. I could never get into horror; ghosts and monsters always left me bored. Even thrillers never really got me in the same way. But there was just a part of me that always knew it wasnā€™t real, it never happened. But true crime? The awful stuff that humans do to one another? That got me. I used to think it was about facing the darkness, and coming to terms with my fear, or somehow honouring the victims, but itā€™s not. Itā€™s just that thereā€™s a part of me that gets an awful little buzz from it. From that shudder that goes through my body when Iā€™m getting all the gory details of how someone died at the hands of a real-life human monster. Books, podcasts, documentaries, Iā€¦ I went through all of them all, and still wanted more.
MAG 112 Thrill of the Chase; Statement of Lisa Carmel, regarding her involvement in a series of murders. Statement number 0111311, 13th November 2011.

First listen to: MAG 109 - Nightfall
Loved hearing about how Julia and Trevor met. They remind me so much of Supernatural. Which is very fitting since theyā€™re both clearly marked by the Hunt. Truth be told I didnā€™t remember Julia until I googled her name. I was ecstatic when Trevor showed up though. Itā€™s like meeting a well known person from history.
