Human leather would technically be the most vegan. Bear with me for a moment.
Legally gathered is what mean. Think about it. You sign a legal document stating you agree that your skin is later to be used for leathermaking. Since you are not a cow and can read, it is the most ethical form of leather. Even if it's a bit morbid.
Would there be scams and illegal harvesting? Of course, but it's not like organ theft isn't already a thing. But human leather would technically be cheaper, since people die all the time and unlike organ donating you don't have to wait for a specific blood type. Also, the most real estate leather would likely come from the back, which you don't see even in the event of an open casket funeral, so if you preserve skinless parts in some way you can have a theoretical steady supply.
Financial compensation would likely also be a thing, whether for the donor while they are alive or the family in case of a deceased donor.
It would not be vegan, but veganism stands on the basis of the ethicality of animal-sourced products anyways, so the human-sourced leather would be vegan in that sense.

Cleo and Gem are related! Gem never realized this, because while she did hear stories about great-aunt Cleophas, who was weird and had useless skills like leathermaking and decorative woodcarving and knew swear words in protogalactic and ran off with some poet to presumably die, she's never really linked it to ZombieCleo, who is weird and has odd skills like leathermaking and armour stand magic and knows swear words in Zombie and hangs out with an even weirder poet.
Cleo, on the other hand, is not aware she has any niblings, let alone great-niblings.

for today's culinary creation, i bring you sumac-ade!
Tumblr media
the concotion seen brewing here is a beverage popular here in Appalachia, made from the fruit of a plant called sumac
Tumblr media
these small fruits, called drupes, are almost entirely one large seed covered in a leathery skin, so there is not much worth eating
however! the external skin has a coating of malic acid that gives it a sour flavor, and sumac lemonade seeks to use that malic acid to make a tart beverage
the drink is made first as a cold infusion, as heat introduces an unpleasant astringency from the fruit to the drink
soak the drupes in cool water and rub gently with your fingers before letting infuse overnight
the next day, filter the liquid through something like double cheesecloth, add a sweetener (maple syrup is common, and a splash of lemon juice to add a little complexity, and the drink should be finished
there are three species of edible sumac in the Eastern United States, and I believe the one we used for this batch was non-ideal for this recipe
a typical sumac-ade should be a pink color and decently tart without any reduction, whereas this batch was very weakly flavored and a pale yellow
we ended up reducing the infusion down to concentrate the acid, but that also concentrated a lot of herbal flavors i was not fond of
we ended mixing it with high proof spirits and producing an interesting herbal liqueur
ill likely retry this experiment with another local species, as well explore sumac's other uses as a dye, a spice, and a source of tannins for leathermaking

[Image ID: The word "Artisans" above a pixel music note.]
Since my Clans have cooking, pottery, and other early society inventions, they need a role responsible for crafting those items. They also need cats who can provide entertainment to their Clan, relieving the pressure of their daily lives with art and beauty. Therefore, we have the artisans. Like caretakers, we can split an artisan's responsibilities into three categories; crafting, trade, and entertainment. RippleClan has yet to find an artisan as of Moon 12, but when they do, they'll take over these tasks.
Artisans: Crafting
Artisans are responsible for crafting the tools and resources used by the Clan. With over a century of culture at their paws and generations of cats developing their skills, artisans are able to make a lot of goods! There are a lot of different crafts out there, but here are some of the most important/interesting:
Weaving: The Clans make twine out of materials like milkweed to craft baskets, which are perfect for storing food, herbs, and various other items.
Pottery: The Clans make frequent use of clay from the Great Northern River and the coastline to craft pottery. Pottery is great for storing liquids and other items too small to keep in baskets. It also allows the Clans to have cookware for various dishes!
Leathermaking: The Clans take the pelts of their prey and make leather out of it. This leather can line den floors, warm nests, or use to cover cats who have lost fur and need extra warmth. These coverings are some of the most complex crafts an artisan can work on. Currently, the Clans are experimenting with more customizable leatherwork, such as sleeves that can be worn over paws to fiddle with fire. Items like bags are some ways off, as baskets tend to do the job well.
Accessories: The Clans can make some accessories that are worn around camp, to Gatherings, or to otherwise boost appearance. Necklaces are the most common accessory (such as the simple twine necklace given to Twinekit upon her death), but tail wraps/bracelets are also popular.
Food: Artisans are the main cats responsible for cooking meals for the Clan using the resources gathered by caretakers. While caretakers tend the fire and large structures used for artisan crafts, artisans are the ones who work with them. This is why Downstar took up artisan tasks when she founded RippleClan, as her caretaker training sometimes crossed with artisan knowledge.
Woodwork: Most of the Clan's woodworking involves carving with twigs, sticks, and branches. The task of bringing down an entire tree is demanding, extremely difficult, and disliked by most cats due to the negative impact a dead tree has on the rest of the forest. As such, the Clans scavenge what wood they can or cut out branches from a tree trunk.
Tool-making: Artisans take stones and sharpen them into tools for their other crafts. A lot of their tools wouldn't be that familiar to human audiences, as they are designed to work when held in a cat's mouth or between two paws.
Artisans: Trade
Since artisans are responsible for crafting the tools of the Clans, they journey to their neighbor's borders and engage in trade. Most trade is a simple bartering system; one Clan gives another a basket in exchange for a pot, a jar of oil for a rare and brilliant stone. Artisans have a largely unspoken agreement on the value of certain items, based on how easily said resource can be obtained across all five Clans and its uses. The value also adjusts based on the quality of the work done. Artisans argue and barter about the value of their goods and what they should get in return. A good artisan apprentice learns how to craft a good argument, often joining codekeeper apprentices in their lessons on the subject. An outsider would likely be confused by the leaps of logic artisans make in their arguments, but it's just the language of trade.
Artisans are often joined by mediators when they need to discuss diplomacy or trade services as opposed to goods. Artisans do some of their best work during the Gathering, when everyone brings supplies for communal dishes and hostilities are forgotten for a while.
Artisans: Entertainment
When artisans aren't working on their crafts or going to the borders, they entertain their Clanmates. They learn songs, dance, and play some of the few instruments the Clans have made for themselves. You'll often find a few artisans performing at the Gathering or other Clan-wide holidays/celebrations. They make dye and paint on rocks or leather in a rudimentary canvas (the latter of which must be carefully stored to prevent damage). They even make carvings from wood and stone.
Like historians, artisans tell stories, but their tales are purely fictional. With fictional tales, they can play with morals and impart lessons on others without the suffering of real cats. They may supplement these stories with acting, carvings, and even some of the strangest accessories of all; masks. These shows and performances lend artisans to the task of holiday preparation and organization, making sure everyone in the Clan makes sure to take time off.
RippleClan... really needs an artisan.

Considering the "march of technology" in Clan culture and the span of time between Thunder and, say, Briarlight -- is Briarlights mobility device more advanced than we give it credit for or is Thunder's prosthetic, like, incredibly simplistic? Literally a leg-shaped stick? Or is the progression of accessability options over time less of an upward trend? Would knowledge wax and wane depending on the era and how tolerant Clan culture is of the disabled at the time?
Did advanced techniques like weaving, leathermaking, or cooking exist back in BB!DOTC or are they developed over the following decades?
They developed over the ensuring decades, but cooking and leatherwork both come from Tribe culture! When the Sundrown Patrol shacks back up with them in TNP, many generations later, they are actually going to find that Tribal leatherwork is more advanced than Clan leatherworking, and they also cook their food
(Crowfoot smugly glances at Squirrelpaw like "look it's that thing you don't do, wormbelly")
Park Cats don't make tools like this, by the way. They had no need or desire. Before the destruction of the Park, the humans provided everything in terms of trash cans, kibble handouts, so on. Individual groups would fight for landmarks, but resources were more based around food and recreation, not crafting reagents.
There's a point where Thunder Storm ends up making friends with River Ripple, not knowing he's a prince or even speaking the same language, just because he hands him a hot, roasted mouse.
The leg prosthetic is basically a leg-shaped stick with "good leather" by the standards of the time, strapped to his nub. I drew him once without the prosthetic, if you want to see what he's got. There's a teeeeeny weenie bit of leg below the knee.
But anyway yes knowledge waxes and wanes. Wildfur's mobility device was super unique and built on BloodClan contribution, Littlecloud and Cinderpelt had a little adventure going to Chelford for ideas. Briarlight's is SHOCKINGLY advanced and a testament to Jessie's genius, but built on what Cinder and Little had already invented.

Is there a difference between cristal and vidrio?
It depends
In some countries they're synonymous for "glass"
I think of el cristal as being more commonplace, but el vidrio is more common in technical terms especially in terms of glassblowing and glaziers
There's a difference in terms of chemistry and technical terms, but I've found that when talking about "panes of glass" or the glass part of something el cristal is more common but vidrio isn't wrong
But! Keep in mind that el cristal can mean "crystal" and not just "glass", so it can have other uses
To me, the difference between the two words is similar to the one between la piel and el cuero for "leather", where la piel (though it literally is "skin") is more common, el cuero is a bit more technical; and there's a technical difference in terms of leathermaking but for the layperson they come out as synonymous

Father gets nice looking gloves for Devotion Day :3c they are good for cold weather!
Hunter didn't understand holidays in either the UEG or in Ylisse. He knew it had important moments for people and his family with how much Rebecca would plan for any holiday events. To him he just saw it as a heightened security risk. Large crowds of people, lots of noise, enclosed spaces. Not his idea of a good time but he didn't have many of those either.
He spent this Devotion Day as he did the others while in Ylisse, patrol the castle in his usual route with a few changes so that it didn't end up a habit. He would also watch the kids from time to time so that Chrom and Rebecca could have a date night but this wasn't one of those days. His patrol took him through the main halls, to the barracks, and outside in the garden. It was out in the garden when he was stopped by Chrom.
"Ah son. It is good to see you again. There hasn't been any activity to report."
Chrom laughed a little and said that wasn't why he was there. He had a gift for Hunter. Hunter took the gift that was offered and opened it up. It was a pair of really nice gloves that seemed to be expertly crafted by veteran leathermaker. It would make a nice accessory piece to the outfit that Chloe had made for him when he agreed to 'leave his ugly armor behind'.
"Thank you son. These will go very nicely with my regular outfit."

Every winter. EVERY WINTER. Feels like a switch pops in my brain and I get this furitive need to make something. I now have wood carving tools. Suddenly I have maps being redone for a VTT.
Starting to get baking supplies again to make dark chocolateganached cranberry tarts.
Now I am looking at leathermaking/shie making crafts.
>__> why does the colder temperatures do this to me? The moment it gets warmer all this goes away.
Heck when I was younger I was pouring over model railroad magazines and craftsmanship books on scale modeling landscapes.
And clockmaking for a bit there too.
...wonder what would happen if I just lived somewhere colder? Will this currently seasonal obsession follow seasons anyway? Or will it stay around turning me into some hand crafting Santa claus of a man?

Personalized Panache: Designing Your Custom Leather Biker Vest
New Post has been published on https://ashipwreckinthesand.com/personalized-panache-designing-your-custom-leather-biker-vest/
Personalized Panache: Designing Your Custom Leather Biker Vest
Dream Custom Leather Vest Design: Tips and Ideas
Designing a custom leather vest is a creative and fashionable way to add a unique piece to your wardrobe. This classic outfit enhances your style and expresses your personality. A custom leather vest requires choosing the proper leather and design features to make it yours. We discuss how to make a custom leather vest that matches your dream.
First and foremost, leather choice impacts vest appearance and feel. Cowhide, buffalo, lambskin, and other leathers are durable and versatile. Each type’s texture and softness affect vest comfort and look. Cowhide is rough and excellent for a sumptuous biker vest, while lambskin is soft and perfect for a statement piece. Understanding these leathers’ origins and qualities can help understand how they affect the vest’s durability, aging, and patina.
Leather tanning changes the vest’s look and feel. Vegetable-tanned leather has an earthy, lasting appearance from natural tannins. Chrome-tanned leather is better for brighter, more flexible designs since it has more colors and a softer feel. These tanning procedures provide you with many vest color and finish possibilities.
Desicustomization showcases your originality. Understanding your body type and style helps you visualize the vest’s cut and fit. Do you like a traditional, fitted style that enhances your shape or a more relaxed, more extensive fit for layering? Vest length is also essential, with cropped versions highlighting the waist and longer cuts adding drama. This option influences the vest’s appearance, utility, and wardrobe variety.
Your leather vest can become a masterpiece with unique features and embellishments. Add pockets, zippers, buttons, or laces for comfort and functionality. Embroidery, patches, and custom stitching can add intricate designs, significant motifs, and initials to your vest. These embellishments enhance the vest’s appearance and give it meaning.
Another stylish and comfortable vest feature is the internal lining. The wearer might hide their personality behind a patterned or vividly colored lining. The lining material also affects the vest’s weight and feel, making it an important design decision.
Creating your perfect vest requires a skilled leather artisan or tailor. Their leatherwork skills may help you with vest construction, from fitting to sophisticated design elements. This relationship lets you learn about leathermaking and appreciate the time-tested methods and great attention to detail in handmade pieces.
When designing your custom leather vest, consider its versatility and how it will fit into your wardrobe. A well-designed leather vest can quickly shift from casual to formal attire. It’s an investment in your style that grows with each wear.
Designing a custom leather vest is a fun way to express yourself via fashion. By choosing the leather, improving the design, and adding distinctive details, you produce an item of clothing that reflects your identity and may be enjoyed for years. Your custom leather expresses your originality and creativity, whether it’s a rugged biker vest that tells of road trips, a sleek, tailored piece that exudes elegance, or an artistically decorated item that shows off your artistic side.
The Leather Vest Customization Process: What to Expect
Make a custom leather vest for personal expression and craftsmanship. This traditional but innovative approach introduces people to bespoke clothes, where every stitch and cut expresses personality and style. Understanding the stages and concerns can turn this purchase into a personal creative project.
Choosing the right leather is the first step in making the vest look and feel right. Leather, from tough cowhide to soft lambskin, has a variety of textures and colors. The intended usage of the vest, personal style preferences, and expected lifespan and patina impact this choice. You must explore the physical and visual senses to choose the right leather for your vision.
Design begins after the leather is chosen. This is where imagination and reality merge to form your vision. Design goes beyond aesthetics to include practicality and personal choice. Will the vest have a V-neck or zip front? Are pockets necessary, and what style and placement work best? In the design phase, you and the craftsman or designer discuss every detail to ensure it meets your needs.
The vest is meticulously crafted next. The artisan’s skills shine as they turn your design into an item. Cutting leather is an art that requires precision and knowledge of the material to enhance each panel’s natural beauty and strength. It takes time to sew the vest together, but each stitch strengthens and beautifies it. This step may include unique hardware like buttons, zippers, and buckles matching the leather and pattern.
The customization options are nearly endless, allowing creative expression. The vest becomes a canvas for your individuality with detailed laser etchings, hand-painted graphics, embroidery, and exotic skins or metal accents. At this point, the vest becomes yours, reflecting your tastes, experiences, and clothing store.
Fitting the vest properly ensures it looks and feels great. Customizing a leather vest requires one or more fittings to get a perfect fit. Custom leatherwork is tailored to your body, ensuring comfort and an appealing silhouette.
You must communicate with your artisan or designer throughout this process. The final vest exceeds your expectations due to this mutually respectful relationship. The artisan offers advice based on their skills while staying faithful to your vision from the first design to the final revisions.
Proper care is essential for keeping your custom leather vest cherished for years. Leather needs special care to maintain its beauty and integrity. Your maker can advise you on maintaining and storing the vest to ensure it ages gently and develops a distinctive patina that reflects your journey.
This transaction becomes an engaging experience that honors leathermaking from start to finish. You can experiment with your style and personalized clothes while honoring tradition. The finished garment reflects your style and the craftsman’s expertise and love.
Custom leather vest creation involves choices, creativity, and teamwork. It shows the longevity of leather as a medium for personal expression and the bespoke process as a way to actualize a unique idea. Whether it expresses rugged individualism, sleek refinement, or artistic flare, the garment is a wearable work of art with personal meaning and style that will last.
