A little post-2.5 sequel to my last comic because the update destroyed me 😃

Learning anything about marine mammal training will make you re-evaluate so much of your relationship with your own pets. There is so much force involved in the way we handle domestic animals. Most of it isn’t even intentional, it just stems from impatience. I’m guilty of it myself!

But with the exception of certain veterinary settings where the animal’s health is the immediate priority, why is it so important to us that animals do exactly what we want exactly when we want it? Why do we have to invent all these tools and contraptions to force them to behave?

When a whale swam away from a session, that was that. The trainer just waited for them to decide to come back. If they flat out refused to participate in behaviors, they still got their allotment of fish. Nothing bad happened. Not even when 20-30 people were assembled for a procedure, and the whale chose not to enter the medical pool. No big deal. Their choice and comfort were prioritized over human convenience.

It’s almost shocking to return to domestic animal medicine afterwards and watch owners use shock collars and chokers and whips to control their animals. It’s no wonder that positive reinforcement was pioneered by marine mammal trainers. When you literally can’t force an animal to do what you want, it changes your entire perspective.

I want to see that mindset extended to our domestic animals.

I didn’t want to pay for an Uber, so I walked back from the vet with Grim in her carrier. and I was scared it would stress her out……….but she hasn’t stopped screaming at the door since we got back.

I don't know if it's a funny artifact from his brief foray as an outdoor cat before we adopted him or what, but whenever Seamus is on a walk and a car goes by, he always has to sit down and watch it go by before he can resume his walk. Doesn't matter how far away from the road he is. If he can hear the car, he has to turn, sit, and make sure it isn't barreling straight for him.

have always found it immensely odd/frustrating when I see people who refuse to use any sort of physical force to control their dog. by which I do NOT mean hitting obv, but like: if the dog is standing rigid on the sidewalk barking at something and the owner is just standing there next to it, lightly tugging the leash but nothing more. or a small dog that’s lunging and pulling towards another dog and the owner is just, again, walking placidly behind it. or a dog that’s laying down on the sidewalk bc it wants to pounce on an oncoming dog and the owner won’t touch it. Etc you get the picture.

like goddamn dude it’s a dog. It’s on a leash. Fucking move them. why are you letting yourself get pulled around by a 20lb doodle?? sure ask nicely first but shortening the leash and yanking them back to you is not going to hurt them and in fact is what you need to do if your animals being a nuisance in public. Jesus.

Ok people say this but Gojo was literally such a green flag to Geto 😭✋️✋️✋️ he noticed Geto's declining health, he asked him what was wrong only for Geto to deny him the truth until it was too late, he never pushed him, always tried to be understanding, tried to hear him out, never blamed him for anything, always tried to reassure him, etc.

i don't think i've said much about it other than 'she almost died' aksdhsh but everything went very wrong when the first one was born and she got sepsis, which can really fuck you up long term and she developed chronic fatigue.

she definitely tells the children that she's got a sword hidden inside it
