Aphmau announced Mystreets last season at vidcon 2024

All I'm asking is make Garroth x Laurence canon and all will be forgiven PLEASE

Aaron is so much more likable in Mcd than Mystreet (which I know isn't a very high bar but c'mon)

First reason being that he isn't a 19 y/o in love with a 14 y/o. We may not have confirmed ages but they are very much both adults when they first meet.

Second reason, he was a lot easier to sympathise with. He wasn't interesting beyond his backstory (to me at least), but he sure as hell didn't deserve everything he went through.

The only complaints I have for mcd!Aaron are based soley in the fact that he was made into a love interest. He needed therapy - he wasn't yet over the deaths of the people in his village, much less the deaths of his wife and son.

It would have made much more sense for him to be a mentor of sorts for Aphmau. Helping her be a better lord and teaching her the ropes, but no. He had to be a love interest/one night stand who went and got himself killed the very next day, leaving her pregnant and mourning him.

12/29/2024 Update: March on Washington, D.C. January 3-5, 2025!!!

Hello, everyone, and thank you so much to everyone who's involved in this fight to protect and save all democracies and free people's in the world from a second donald j. trump presidency where he's clearly aligned with the dictators of the world to give all of Europe to putin and actually attempt to take Mexico, Canada, Panama, and Greenland by force.

But all hope isn't lost. The Marc Elias situation has gone to some really weird places, so he may decide he's not going to help at all. The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) situation is still strong. I've teamed up with Jessica Denson (a woman who defeated donald trump in court on behalf of herself and a bunch of other abused donald trump staff/employees) and she's teamed up with Laurence Tribe, Glenn Kirschner, CREW and Noah Bookbinder, John Bonifaz, and every constitutional scholar and law expert she can find via her "Lights On!" YouTube and Bluesky presence.

Jessica Denson put out a call for help to organize class action civil litigation and organized marches last weekend. NOWMARCH.ORG is the result of that call for help. Everything is coming together really fast. If you can make it to Washington, D.C. during January 3-5, 2025, this is your chance to make your voice heard in person to encourage Congress to enforce Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution on donald trump and j.d. vance to keep them out of office. If you can't make it in person, there will be online opportunities to make your voice heard.

I've been working Democratic House Leader Hakeem Jeffries Bluesky feed to inform everyone there about Section 3/14A, the truth about the SCOTUS Anderson ruling, and the January 3-5, 2025 march and call to action for days as well as working the overall Bluesky membership to get the word out to as many people as possible since I took a hiatus from Tumblr on November 27th.

As to the question on why this hasn't gotten traction on more social media accounts here on Tumblr and on Instagram, Facebook, and the like; this movement has been criticized as being a protest against the peaceful transfer of power. It's not a protest against a peaceful transfer of power; it's a protest to demand that both houses of Congress do as SCOTUS informed donald trump, in their unanimous Anderson ruling on 3/4/2024, that he must have done in order to be legally elected as President of the United States.

the labyrinth - prologue

a/n: i'm going through an archie madekwe phase no one look at me

warnings: farleigh being farleigh, which includes underage drugs, drinking, cigarettes and sex 18+

fic summary: ariadne gavin and her childhood best friend turned enemy return to saltburn for the last time

Ariadne Gavin wishes she could say the first Catton she met was Felix or even Venetia. She would have loved to explain to people how she had tripped into Venetia at the airport when she first landed in England, or how she had been greeted by Felix's already tall, grinning face.

Instead, the truth was, the only reason the Cattons held their arms open to her as they did was because of Farleigh fucking Start.

Ariadne had met Farleigh when she was seven. Her father, Laurence Gavin, was a new money tech mogul who was making a name for himself selling computers. He had dragged her along to a fundraising gala, and it was there that Ariadne found herself forever enamoured with the Cattons.

Ariadne had never met another child before. Her upbringing was limited to her Nanny, Lilian, the house staff, Douglas, Marcus, and Tyrone, and her mother, Vienna. Ariadne had only even known that white people existed because of her storybooks.

"Hello," She whispers politely. "My name is Ariadne Marie Gavin."

"I'm Farleigh." The little boy shrugs.

Ariadne tilts her head. "How old are you?"

Farleigh looks at her strangely. "Seven and a half."

Ariadne pouts. "Oh. I'm just seven."

Farleigh's eyes widen in panic. "That's okay! Don't be upset! It's okay to be smaller than me! Normally I'm the smallest person."

"Youngest." Ariadne corrects.

"M'kay," Farleigh says, but makes no move to say the sentence correctly. He jumps down from his chair and squishes her cheeks. "Do you want to play hide and seek?"

"Won't the grown-ups be mad we're gone?"

"They never notice." Farleigh smiles.

That smile got Ariadne in more trouble than she could count over the next thirteen years.

At some point between seven and a half and fourteen, Farleigh stopped being her only friend. Or, more accurately, Farleigh began to make friends and it meant that Ariadne was going to be alone unless she made some of hers.

Or, that was, until Saltburn.

Ariadne didn't like the person Farleigh was becoming ever since they'd become teenagers. He'd been mean, and flaky, and worst of all, he kept hitting on her friends.

And yes, perhaps she was a little jealous, but she had always been territorial, and Farleigh was hers, not Ashley's or Jessica's. Besides, Farleigh grew like a beanstalk, and all her friends only liked him because he was tall. They didn't spend Sunday evenings conditioning his hair or laugh at his terrible -and slightly mean- jokes.

Overall, they had begun to drift a tad, but a crack was not a canyon, as her father liked to say.

But that didn't mean Farleigh wasn't still the only person her age she truly trusted, so he still came over to her house every Sunday to do homework and complain.

"Did I tell you my mom's family wants me to come to England over the summer?" He sighs, stretched out on her floor.

Ariadne has her nose tucked into her copy of Pride and Prejudice for her book report and looks up suddenly. "Excuse me?"

"I know, right? Like, why would I waste my summer-" Farleigh starts.

Ariadne shushes him. "Shut up, Far. Doesn't your mom's family pay for all your mom's shit? And yours, for that matter?"

"I mean, yeah, but they always said I'm out after eighteen." He shrugs.

Ariadne grins. "Because they don't know you. But if, say, you went to England in the summers, made connections with them, flashed some puppy dog eyes," she trails off.

Farleigh raises a brow. "You want me to go to them like some kind of homeless kid asking for spare change on Alameda Street?"

Ariadne kicks him. "No, I want you to use your brain. You're going to be my business partner once I inherit, obviously, but it's going to be obvious that we're only working together because we're friends if you don't at least have a college degree. Now, imagine, we get into some fancy British university, we network with like a billion people, and suddenly we have investors lining up at graduation."

"All it'll cost me is my pride." Farleigh grumbles.

Ariadne purses her lips. "Not if I come with. Then, it's just going to be us, two rich kids, going and being rich on a different continent over the summers."

Farleigh sits up. "I'm going to hate this, aren't I?"

"Not in the long run." Ariadne grins.

Ariadne wishes she'd never suggested going to Saltburn. She and Farleigh were one change in conversation away from escaping the Cattons and she'd never forgive herself for it.

Maybe it's the new money, manifest destiny, red-blooded American in her, but she never liked the look of Saltburn. She missed her modern, sleek home in Bel-Air, and from a single look, she knew Farleigh did too.

Saltburn was cold and ancient. There was no carpet, only million-year-old Persian rugs. No many-buttoned showers, only antiquated tubs. They didn't even have a bidet, which Ariadne thought was borderline uncivilized.

But they adjusted, slowly but surely, to the famous, trademark brand of Catton Madness that had sent his mother running for the hills all those years before.

Farleigh hadn't known that Felix and Venetia were their age, but they certainly were, and they were wilder and more English than anyone Ariadne had ever met.

She also found that they took to calling her demeaning, patronizing pet names like "Pet" or "Girlie." Farleigh got about the same treatment, only, in her opinion, worse, because there was no way to spin "Boy" or "Dog" as respectful.

Vee liked to call her "Newmo", short for "New Money" and Ariadne knew this was an insult, but bit her tongue.

She did that a lot, after Saltburn.

She starts at St. Mary Magdelene's Secondary Academy for Girls with Venetia that year, and Farleigh attends St. John's Secondary Academy for Boys with Felix. Twice a year, the adjoined schools have huge dances and dinners where they exercise their best manners.

The Gala is poorly chaperoned, as it is also the only time the faculty gets to mix and mingle. The dinner is mostly manner-based, but by the time the dance begins, most adults turn their heads away from the teenage drama and illegal activity.

When their first Fall Gala comes around, Ariadne looks around excitedly for Farleigh, peering through the crowd of white faces. She wants to tell him everything that's happened since they separated at the start of the school year.

Unfortunately, all she gets is Felix's stupid face. "Where's Farleigh?"

Felix rolls his eyes grinningly. "Smoking outside. Again."

Ariadne blinks, takes a step back, and laughs disbelievingly. Farleigh had gotten more rebellious since they'd become teenagers, sure, and maybe England was rubbing off on him, but he never smoked. "Are you kidding?"

Felix snickers. "He said you'd be pissed off."

That was another thing Ariadne hated about the Cattons. Everything was a fucking joke to them.

"No fucking shit!" She whisper-shouts. "He can't- He's going to ruin his lungs! This is my fault, I knew it was a bad idea for us to go to different schools!" She bites her lip, flicking her wrists in and out.

It was a terrible nervous tick. Lilian had always said it was unbecoming. Ariadne couldn't shake it.

Felix steadies her by the arms, charming doe eyes staring right into hers. "Farleigh will be fine, everyone smokes once in a while. Besides, he's finally letting loose, isn't that worth something?"

Ariadne wants to spit that it is not something, because Farleigh doesn't need to let loose, he needs more structure. He'd already been let loose his whole life and Ariadne had spent most of hers cleaning up the debris.

She doesn't yell at Felix, just shakes her head mutely.

"Well, maybe you need to let loose too. Vee's got weed or shrooms or something in the bathroom, go try that."

And, shockingly, Ariadne lets Felix lead her to the door of the Girl's bathroom, where a small puff of fogged-up air escapes.

"Have fun, Pet!"

He shoves her inside and lets the door swing closed.

Vee offers her a joint, grinning, and for the first time, Ariadne's thoughts cease.

After Ariadne is introduced to weed for the first time, she no longer worries about Farleigh. Still, the worst does not come until the Spring Gala, when she walks in on him losing his virginity to Arabella Vaillancourt.

All the jealousy she had felt in middle school hit a breaking point then. This wasn't flirting or even a kiss on the cheek. Arabella had claimed Farleigh in a way Ariadne would never be able to compensate for.

Ariadne turns her head away from the sight of them, sweating and naked and wholly consumed by each other and goes back to her dorm.

Vee sees her tears and offers her a line of coke, and from that point on, Ariadne and Farleigh are no longer friends or even allies.

When the summer break retrieves them again, she hardly looks at him in favour of making jokes with Venetia and walking Felix through the process of getting girls to like him. While Felix was pretty, most of the girls their age couldn't stand him because he was so boring to talk to. She pierces his eyebrow so he has something interesting to talk about. Felix is horrible at flirting, too. Not like Farleigh, she thinks, recalling the many girls he had wooed bitterly.

Soon, everyone at Saltburn forgets that Ariadne and Farleigh were ever even a pair. Or, in their respective cases, at least pretend to forget.

Hello hi, self-proclaimed favourite anon here to respond to anon who said that Jess being an irl shipper/mlm fetishizer isn't exactly the most pressing issue compared to everything else (link for everyones convenience -> https://tinyurl.com/response-to-original-anon). Personally speaking (and no shade to anon at all) Jess's fetishization of mlm being dismissed as a 'non-issue' is… a little frustrating since the fetishization of mlm is a very real issue a part of a larger issue of Jess's treatment of queer people and queer relationships. Warning: This will get lengthy because I do want to articulate why I included Jess's fetishization of mlm and her Septiplier involvement and to provide a broader perspective of all of the issues with the former has caused. I want to be as thorough as possible with writing a response to the original anon.

My point was Jess used MLM and queer ships to fuel her own amusement/fantasies but doesn't show ANY queer relationships and queer folk at all. To Jess, queer men were objects to get off to and find amusement in, Jess could toy around with and discard when she gets bored. Jess's fetishization and queerbaiting very much go hand-in-hand together because she didn't treat queer relationships as a tangible relationship for the characters but she still used the chance that these relationships could have any screentime to string her fanbase along. Look at Garrance in MyStreet and MCD. Back in MyStreet, Laurence wanted to kiss Aphmau in a Romeo-Juliet play so he used a potion that would switch Garroth out (since Garroth was Romeo and Aph was Juliet). Hijinks ensue, Laurence swaps out Aphmau, he and Garroth kiss and there's a HUGE spectacle made about it. Both of these men DID NOT want the kiss, they were reacting quite badly to it actually. It VERY MUCH was fuel to the fanbases love for Garrance in MCD as people read the queer undertones between the two characters.

To my memory, I don't think Jess didn't confirm that Laurence nor Garroth were ever queer or expressed interest in men. Their sexualities were very much written to be straight as Garroth and Laurence only pursue women: yet in MyStreet and MCD they were pushed into a compromising situation where they had a kiss with another queer man + Garroth and Laurence both did the devils tango with one another according to 'The-List™'. Garrance is deeply important to this fanbase because a majority of people are queer, and Garrance was very much their exposure to queer relationships and queerness in general. To have two fleshed out characters have the possibility of being in an actual relationship was deeply important to people.

Jess hyping up the idea that Garroth and Laurence could have an actual queer relationship despite never explicitly making/stating either characters queer, a relationship Jess herself supported amongst fan to just…. NEVER follow through with it nor even bother showing that either character is queer despite putting them in situations where they can be read as quer, isn't just queerbaiting you're fucking queerfishing with hook line and sinker. Something Jason Bravura himself agreed with (link -> https://tinyurl.com/jason-admits-the-queerbaiting), Jess was writing MLM to string fans along and for her own amusement. Jess never bothered to confirm Garroth or Laurence queer, Jess never bothered to confirm or show that Garroth or Laurence had an attraction to men, Jess never bothered to even put Garrance as an actual possibility aside from subtext and blatant queerbaiting. She only portrays Garrance to be put in wACkY situations to be made a spectacle out of and to string along fans.

Also anon, I'm going to be blunt here: you're absolutely downplaying the extent of Jess's involvement with Septiplier to 'Jessica thinking it’d be cool if two YouTubers kissed in 2016'. Alongside the link to her tweet about Septiplier, I included a link of a person reacting to a whole ass VIDEO of Jess CREATING a whole ass Septiplier fanfiction for her own amusement. The entire premise of the whole video was Jess making an entire fanfiction and having her characters roleplay to said fanfiction. Like, Jess sat down, decided that she will write a romantic fanfiction between two real breathing men, will make an entire video dedicated to roleplaying this fanfiction, even telling audience that "if you enjoyed this fanfiction, leave a like + comment + subscribe and don't tell mark or jack about this please". And mind you, this is all from watching 1 minute and 30 seconds of the video. Jess profited off of violating the boundries of two men and their discomfort, acknowledge how uncomfortable this entire fucking video will be (don't tell mark and jack, amiright) and profited off of said discomfort. Holy shit, Jess had a whole ass room DISPLAYING Septiplier fanart and she was super giddy about roleplaying this fanfiction for her own amusement. And mind you, she was fully aware of the consequences that real life "shipping" causes between two people as seen with the linked -> (https://tinyurl.com/max-ross-ship-tweet)…. Like, anon do you not see the issue with her fetishizing this relationship??? It's one thing to privately write fiction and ship two real people, and it's another to make it a whole ass fanfiction to make a fucking video milking the hype between the relationship of two real people.

Like… that IS really questionable behaviour for Jess. It's really questionable that Jess, who was 23 years old, was actively treating the relationship between two REAL men as amusement and content to profit off of. It's really questionable that Jess presented the idea of a queer relationship between two men, hyped up that relationship to her very much closeted/queer fanbase and NEVER bothered to canonize either men as queer or their relationship.

Everything I have mentioned above is JUST one side of the coin. In a vaccum, its not an issue if Jess enjoys MLM pairings and/or 'it’d be cool if two youTubers kissed'. The other side of the coin is that there has been REAL tangible HARM that Jess contributed to. There's a reason why Jess took down that horrendous video because it ABSOLUTELY contributed to the disgusting sexual harassment Mark and Jack received; she was a stupidly popular youtuber making roleplays and feeding into the Septiplier hype of the 2010s. The reason I say she fetishizes MLM because Jess didn't treat queer men or mlm romance as actual who are worthy of respect, she used it for silly scenarios to hype up the shippers and to string along her fans. Jess absolutely contributed to the social-othering queer men faced online, seeing them as 'exotic' spectacles to be gawked at and admired yet simultaniously be disrespected and seen as toys to be discarded off once the awe wears off. Queer people and their queer romance is sexy and hot for straight people to get off to, but god forbid we actually make it serious and have queer people have queer romances that aren't just kiss teases or ship bait. Jess wasn't some teenager who had an underdeveloped perspective of queer people and queer relationships, she was a grown ass woman making these videos and making these decisions and DISREGARDED all of the potential harm that it would cause to people.

When you step back and consider the implications of Jess's actions, yea its. Not really a non issue now it is? It's absolutely awful behaviour and awful actions that were done, and as a queer person themselves, it's fucking uncomfortable as shit to look back upon. Watching that Septiplier clip just, felt like I was being lobotmized by a yaoi paddle while sitting in a sharpie bath. It was uncomfortable to see how queer romance was to be gawked and oogled at and feeling so othered by it. It's really uncomfortable and I would not invite Jess and Jason to the Aphblr Pride Parade, they get to watch from a safe distance in the safety of an Arby's parking lot. Regardless, this was a super lengthy response so as compensation here is your shrimp for reading it to the end 🦐

I doubt Jesson intended it but... why do I keep running into this really heavy theme throughout mcd.

Hear me out:

Children turning out to be monsters despite their parents efforts.

Let's start of with the obvious red flags

Zenix.

It is implied that he was very young when he was taken in by Garroth. It is also said outright that he was a shadowknight even before that. The dark implication of this is that Zenix became a shadowknight at a young age (children becoming shadowknights is rarely mentioned within mcd, it notably is only implied with Zenix, and Alexis.) Garroth took Zenix under his wing, so much so the kid was literally described as like a son to Garroth. But despite his efforts Zenix betrayed Phoenix Drop. The way they address this issue stands out to me as multiple characters seem to describe Zenix as "already gone" from his arrival to Phoenix Drop. Even Laurence. Now one could chalk this up to Jess being unable or unwilling to truly address Zenix as a tragic character, and simply paint him as the conniving villain the series needed at the time (before Zane). And i think there is some truth to that. However the fact that Zenix' motives have remained notably undefined and his actions seem to contradict from what we are told about him so insistently. Even for Jessica this is a clear sign that something is up. "Already gone"... because my writer brain loves parallels I automatically connected it to (again) the only place that this idea is brought up in the series: Zane.

Zane.

Zane in mcd is evil, his motives also seem a little unclear at times, but this is because he characterized to be power hungry, unpredictable, and- undeniably evil. But was it always this way? Zane would prefer to watch the world burn than rule it. He seems to just hate people, so what terrible event caused such a terrible person? Nothing apparently. As said by Zianna, he was "always that way".

Zenix' "Already Gone" hits far too close to Zane's "Always That Way" for me. And the parallels don't end there, Zenix and Zane mirror one another in interesting ways. Both have familial-like attachment to Garroth, and their nature/motivation seems to torment and confuse him endlessly. They both became shadowknights (both were chosen by the shadow lord despite being outside of his usual "type" - Zane:At twink, Zenix:A child.) And they both seem to be obsessed with power, yet both have some kind of trauma surrounding people in power (Zane:Garte, Zenix:Implied to have been wronged by a lord in some way.) All this being said I have to point out Zenix and Zane both start with Z. They are the only ones aside from Zoey with a Z starting name, and since they already share so many qualities I can see this being a way for Jess to foreshadow this.

Garroth, like he did with Zenix, he questions what led Zane on his path but Zianna seems to put this idea to rest entirely, and her word is taken as fact. Which is fair the idea isn't too shocking, considering the kind of person Zane was. But the fact that even Garroth thought to question the cause of Zane's nature and is immediately shut down by Zianna, and then it is never mentioned again. It's just to reminiscent to how Garroth compartmentalized Zenix' downfall and never mentioned it again. It's just too close.

Zianna at the end of the day is Zane's mother, which one could argue that she knows him best, however parents can be blind to the trauma that young children might face and the results that this may cause. Important to note is that Zianna is likely a victim. A constant state of fight or flight could absolutely block her from realizing or addressing the effects of prolonged trauma in her children. In her mind she was taking the blunt of the rather, a shield between harm and her children, but as in most cases, and as shown in both Garroth and Vylad this was not the reality, so it would be easy to connected that this would be the same with the middle son, Zane.

But in the misfortune of her situation Zianna did the best that she possibly could. But Zane ended up the way he did anyway. The way that Zianna is characterized in her short time on screen really encapsulates the backbone of this concept. Her guilt, and her grief are so compelling, and the manner in which she rationalize her traumatic experience is very believable... but identifying a child who was raised in a household that actively encouraged cruelty as just "always like that" is very suspicious to me. And the strong thematic intersections aligning between Zenix and Zane makes me believe that there is something going on here.

Last but not least.

This reveal was unexpected but impactful. It was shocking because of this concept. Despite Molly's best efforts Brian became a traitor anyway.

It came alongside Zenix' in a way which I think is interesting. It was implied that they had some kind of relationship. And they both ended up betraying Phoenix Drop.

I wonder where this guy is now...

But some honorable mentions since this concept is interesting to me. (Most of the arcs were put aside so it is interesting to think where they could have gone considering the circumstances, so I'm connecting it to this mini-theory.)

Season 1, when Baby Alexis was turned into an adult SHADOWKNIGHT! She was returned to normal of course but still... is that a possible destiny for her to be weary of?

Leona. Kiki is so sweet, and a great mom, bit... there is too much mystery and unanswered questions surrounding this child of her's. (Why did Zane even do this?) She is somewhat implied to kinda-but-not-really be Zane's? Regardless of the reality one way or another she is a result of Zane, a pawn in his plot, maybe one that died with him, maybe one that returned with him, we don't know.

Considering this thematic presence throughout MCD I wonder where this would have led in season three. It would be interesting if this heavier side to the series continued. Especially since Aphmau is raising the heir to a destroyer's relic. If this theme is to be believed then where would that lead to in Alina's destiny?

Remain steadfast, dear readers! I received a dozen(-ish) emails today expressing worry about a report from a respected polling organization claiming that “the presidential race is tightening.” I also received a similar number of emails touting reports from a respected polling firm showing VP Harris expanding her post-debate lead to a number that is “larger than the margin of error.”

Here’s the deal: It doesn’t matter which of the above polling narratives is true. Indeed, both could be correct or both could be wrong. Regardless of what the polls show—good or bad—you should not change anything that you plan to do in the next 50 days. We are stuck in a noisy, volatile information environment that is being actively manipulated by the MAGA disinformation machine and Russia. See Axios, Russia amplifies disinformation campaigns against Harris-Walz campaign, Microsoft warns.

Per Axios,

Russia is now throwing all of its disinformation resources behind operations designed to undermine the Harris-Walz campaign, according to a Microsoft report released Tuesday.

[And] the Justice Department exposed a $10 million scheme earlier this month in which employees of a Russian state media network infiltrated a U.S. company to spread Russian propaganda.

Let’s be clear: You are the target of the disinformation being peddled by the GOP and Russia. Their goal is to demotivate you. Do not give them permission to do so!

So, if you have mistakenly over-invested in the polls, knock it off! (And I mean that in the nicest way possible!) It is completely understandable and perfectly human to seek reassurance from polls. No one wants a repeat of the nasty surprise in 2016. But the bad guys have figured out our need for positive feedback and weaponized it against us. They are con men, and we are the mark.

Instead of looking to the media for reassurance, believe your own eyes and ears. You can see the surge in enthusiasm, you know that the number of volunteers at your grassroots organization has increased, and you have been surprised by people in your life who are planning to vote for the first time or will vote for Kamala Harris after voting for Trump in 2016 or 2020. That information is anecdotal, but it is not filtered or manipulated to mislead you.

Of course, we shouldn’t delude ourselves. We must recognize that remaining in touch with real news is important. The question is, how do we stay current without subjecting ourselves to manipulation?

I also rely on Aaron Rupar on Twitter (@atrupar) and his Substack, Public Notice, to provide real-time, unvarnished tracking of statements by Trump, which are often sane-washed by major media.

I use the above sources to give me an objective view of the news—which I then employ as a lens when I read other sources. If your favorite source is not listed above, please do not take offense! If you have identified a source you trust, reward them with your support.

It is going to be seven long weeks until Election Day. Don’t allow yourself to be manipulated by the news. Instead, make the news by motivating new and existing voters to show up on Election Day. The antidote to anxiety is action. And there is plenty to do!

Kamala Harris’s measured interview with National Association of Black Journalists

Both Kamala Harris and Donald Trump sat for interviews on Tuesday. The interviews were, as expected, windows into competing versions of America under the respective candidates. Kamala Harris’s responses were measured, thoughtful, and linear. The media is still trying to decipher what Trump said or meant on several topics.

But . . . Kamala Harris received relatively little notice in the media for her interview, despite the drumbeat of demands that she sit for more interviews. The New York Times complained that her answers “often echoed her stump speech”—as if consistency and discipline in messaging is a bad thing. The Times instead gave top billing (in two articles) to Trump’s unpredictable and baseless promises in his appearance in Flint Michigan. Michael Gold of the NYTimes wrote,

[Trump] made grand promises to restore auto-making jobs to the state, the heart of the American auto industry, as he gave long-winded, often meandering responses to only a few questions.

“Meandering” is an understatement. “Incomprehensible” and “bonkers” are more descriptive.

If you don’t have time to watch the entire 45-minute interview, I recommend watching two answers to get a flavor of how well the VP conducted hereself.

In this segment, she responds to the efforts to incite racial hatred toward Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio. See Springfield: It's a crying shame . . . This answer is notable for many reasons, including the fact that Kamala Harris interrupted the interviewer, stopped herself, apologized, and invited the interviewer to finish her question.

In a second segment worth watching, she answers a more challenging question (in tone and substance) about the war in Gaza and the path to peace: Question on Gaza War.

Trump, on the other hand, gave a series of non-sensical answers in his town hall in Flint, Michigan, any one of which would have resulted in howls from the major media if delivered by Kamala Harris. For example,

When asked about the biggest threat to auto manufacturing jobs in Michigan, Trump responded that the biggest threat to auto jobs was “nuclear weapons.” On the one hand, Trump isn’t wrong; on the other hand, “nuclear weapons” are the biggest threat to everything on earth, so the answer was not specific to the question about auto manufacturing jobs.

When asked how he would decrease the cost of groceries, Trump descended into a rant about windmills. He got there by promising that he would reduce the price of groceries by cutting energy costs by 50% in the first year of his term as president. Of course, presidents have virtually no power to regulate energy prices, which are set by global market conditions. That is the type of answer that the NYTimes described as “meandering” when the correct description was “bonkers.”

Trump said that global warming would be good for Michigan because people in that state would have “more beachfront property.” Trump meant his comment to be a joke, showing that he has no conception of how global warming threatens the United States.

Trump said that the US could become energy self-sufficient because the US has “Bagram” in Alaska, which he claimed “is bigger than Saudi Arabia.” Bagram was a US military airbase in Afghanistan and has no connection to Alaska or oil production.

Most of Trump's other remarks were impossible to follow and often ended by discussing a subject far afield from the question. It was a performance indicative ongoing mental decline. No wonder he is afraid to debate Kamala Harris a second time!
