Finnish names for the declensions
If you have ever taken a Finnish class, you might be used to the anglicism-type names, but I advocate for the native Finnish versions! Here are the declensions that exist in Finnish today:
Nominative - nominatiivi - nimentö Accusative - akkusatiivi - kohdanto Genitive - genetiivi - omanto Partitive - partitiivi - osanto Inessive - inessiivi - sisäolento Elative - elatiivi - sisäeronto Illative - illatiivi - sisätulento Adessive - adessiivi - ulko-olento Ablative - ablatiivi - ulkoeronto Allative - allatiivi - ulkotulento Essive - essiivi - olento Translative - translatiivi - tulento Abessive - abessiivi - vajanto Instructive - instruktiivi - keinonto Komitatiivi - komitatiivi - seuranto
The following cases have no native Finnish names, but still exist in Finnish as a means to derive words:
Prolative - prolatiivi (ohitse) Superessive - superessiivi (tuolla) Delatiivi - delatiivi (kaikkialta) Sublative - sublatiivi (sinne) Lative - latiivi (alas) Temporal - temporaali (tuolloin) Causative - kausatiivi (eniten) Multiplicative - multiplikatiivi (viidesti) Distributive - distributiivi (englantilaisittain) Temporal distributive - temporaalinen distributiivi (sekaisin) Situative - situatiivi (lähekkäin) Oppositive - oppositiivi (vieretysten)

I just want to thank you very much for your addition to the Neo-Khuzdul list of Personal Pronouns for Non-Binary folk like myself! Until now I've been referring to my character as Zigilhû, using the hû to refer to them as an it, and I was more than happy enough to work with that. But the addition of khi has made me absolutely ecstatic. I'm perhaps feeling entirely too emotional for this, but thank you so very much for your consideration, you wonderful person!
Well met, friend!
Your message truly warmed this old scholar’s heart. Thank you so much for your kind words — and please know: you are not “too emotional” for feeling seen. Language, after all, is not just about structure and grammar — it’s also about identity, recognition, and belonging. If the addition of “khi” brought that feeling a little closer to home for you, then I am both honoured and humbled.
Your use of hû in the past makes perfect sense — and indeed, in most cases, it’s the correct form when referring to objects or concepts that are grammatically gender-free in Neo-Khuzdul. For example:
“The fabric’s colour is red. Red is its colour.” Neked ankhâdhu baraz. Baraz ankhâdhu.
In such instances, where we’re referring to something that is neither gendered nor personified, hû remains the right choice. But what about when the reference is not to an object, but to a person whose gender is not specified — or deliberately not assigned?
That’s precisely where khi steps in.
⚙️ On the Creation of “Khi”
Neo-Khuzdul, like many conlangs built on Semitic roots, often lacked overt gendering outside of clear male/female distinctions. Tolkien himself didn’t assign grammatical gender to Khuzdul nouns (even the Elvish languages do not have a grammatical gender, i.e. there is for example no gender agreement between noun and adjective or definite article and noun), and I’ve followed that principle closely — deliberately avoiding the addition of gender markers unless absolutely necessary.
You might be surprised to hear that Neo-Khuzdul includes 136 distinct pronoun forms (though granted, many similar or near-identical ones) — and at first glance, that number might seem excessive. But in truth, it’s quite natural for a well-developed language. Even English, which often seems simpler, has dozens of pronoun forms once you account for cases (subjective, objective, possessive), number (singular/plural), gender, and reflexivity — not to mention formal or informal tone. Neo-Khuzdul simply makes these distinctions more explicit and organized, especially across levels of respect, gender, and grammatical roles. Once you understand the system, it becomes remarkably consistent.
Tumblr media
Overview of all Neo-Khuzdul Pronouns
However, I also recognized that language needs to evolve to meet the needs of its speakers — fictional or otherwise. And so “khi” was introduced years ago as a third-person singular pronoun that could be used in situations where:
The person’s gender is unknown
The person’s gender is irrelevant
The person’s gender is non-binary
Or when one wishes to speak inclusively (e.g. in laws, oaths, or ceremonial speech)
It parallels the English “one” or “they,” but without the formality often associated with “one” in modern English. In fact, I encourage users to think of it as equivalent to “his/her” or “a person’s” rather than overthinking its tone.
“A trader must polish his/her items.” Usjar tabtisi mat fakâtkhi.
In the sentence above, usjar (trader) is gender-free, and khi comfortably occupies the same role as “his/her” — without implying either.
🧭 What About a Gender-Neutral 2nd Person?
For second-person non-binary reference, Neo-Khuzdul uses za. It follows the same case logic as other 2nd person pronouns — with full declension visible in the reference chart:
za – nominative/accusative
-za – genitive determiner (your)
aza – genitive pronoun (yours)
zefsa – reflexive (yourself)
duza – lative (to you / you have)
So if you’re ever referring to yourself or another person in the second person, za and its forms are your go-to.
🔁 When to Use Khi, Hû, or Za
Tumblr media
🔧 A Work in Progress — But A Work for All
It’s important to note that gender-neutral forms in Neo-Khuzdul are not an afterthought. They are part of a living structure, built to support anyone who wants to engage with the language and culture of the Dwarves. You — and everyone like you — belong in these halls of stone.
Thank you again, truly. If this project has offered even a small sense of representation, then it’s done something worthwhile. I’m thrilled that “khi” found its place not just in the language, but with you.
Ever at your service, The Dwarrow Scholar

Word of the Week Wednesday - 2. 4. 2025
Hey, hi, it's Wedesday again, unfortunately I am very sick and as much as I would love to do a related WotW to that, I just. don't have the capacity right now. So here's something simple instead to get this over with. Hopefully next week there'll be something better! You can never know with me, sorry
Jälígðir /ja.liː.ðɪr/ [jaliːðɪɾ̥]
verb, intransitive
to reach
Etymology: from "jä" (meaning "to") and "lígðir" (meaning "touch"). Out of universe, it's a calque of the Czech "dosáhnout."
The object of this verb usually takes the lative case (in the most common usage of this verb).
Example sentence:
Þúvigä kú rajä fíreðar? Jäðulígða gär eirjä.
English: Can you pass it to me? I can't reach it.
Literal translation: Can you to me give-it? Reach-not I to it.
Gloss: can-M.ATEM=Q 2SG 1SG.LAT give<3SG.N>.INF? <NEG>reach-F.ATEM 1SG 3SG.N-LAT
Note: I used a few wordforms and constructions I'm not sure about including yet, sorry. Like "rajä" being the lative of "gär" or "fíðar" being used for passing something to someone else. This really is a rather low quality WotW, but i hope that's understandable

If no one asked yet, why is it hard to enjoy Relat//ivi//ty F//alls content? Is it just the premise?
I am genuinely curious so if you want to rant feel free to do so!
Okay anon so im gonna say there are 2 main reasons why i find it so hard to enjoy r*lativity f*lls fan work even tho i LOVE the premise of the au. one of them is incredibly petty and the other i think is more reasonable
reason 1 and the really really petty one... i really, really do not fucking like how popular fiddleford is as a character IN GENERAL
which isnt to say he doesnt deserve it, god knows out of the important side characters (him, gideon, pacifica and robbie) he's by far the best written of the bunch and has so many funny as hell gags. and i do absolutely really like his character!! hes really interesting and funny and his backstory is tragic and fuck i love his character!!
i absolutely despise the fandom obsession with him LMFAO i hate "m*stery trio" ideas so god damn much (ik this exists with the younger twins + pacifica too but this isnt about that and i give this more leeway because mabel and dipper arent highly codependent like the stan twins are) because there ISNT a m*stery trio. theres a reason why soos says "so youre like mystery twins." why dipper said "mystery twins?" mabel: "i thought you hated that" dipper: "its growing on me". why the cryptogram at the end of Not What He Seems emphasizes that stan and ford are the ORIGINAL mystery twins.
i cannot stress enough how much it annoys me when people try to shove another person into stan and ford's dynamic (anyone who isnt bill who serves as an antagonistic force), as both someone who loves both the platonic and the incestious interpretations of their relationships— and 99% of the time its going to be fiddleford. when i talk about soostanwich or rickstanwich i mostly keep it in the bounds of it being a sex thing or an ot3 where theres a very clear divide between the twins and their 3rd, some kind of awareness that dissappears wheni look at anything involving fiddleford instead
and this extends to SO many aus. believe it or not r*lativity f*lls fiddleford is probably the least offensive for me, hes mostly just a friend of the twins, and is essentially like wendy and pacifica combined in one (ford has a crush on him, anyone who actually respects stan as a character will at least portray him as being kind of antagonistic towards him like that one art i reblogged). r*lativity f*lls is on the better end of their use of him. you do NOT want me ranting about other ford centered aus ive seen where i see fiddleford utilized WAY more than STAN is— stan who is fords brother!!! and the person ford loves the most!!! the character who ford was literally created for!!
like im sorry i feel bad for being so petty because its completely harmless and its not like people are wrong for liking his character and wanting him involved especially since most ship him w either ford or stan, but sometimes i just feel like theres a certain kind of irony in how in a show that emphasizes that theres no one stan and ford need other than each other, theres just this guy being crammed in. and ive mentioned sm times before i love f*ddauth*r and cant stand the popular interpretation of f*ddlest*n but thats kinda irrelevant to my feelings on this imo
im literally just being bitter for no reason but hey anon you gave me the go ahead to rant so i might as well— plus it leads me to my 2nd and way more reasonable point:
i dont think people really know what to do these characters when it comes to this au 😭
and i have to clarify: thats fine!! this is mostly for fun, and if people just want to draw older D and M and younger stans, then you know! go hog wild. that being said, i feel like theres just SO MUCH missed potential in this au and i feel like the most common interpretations can be fun, they only really utilize just very few characters. and swap aus are supposed to be entirely designed around the swapped around cast (one of the best swap aus imo is undersw*p, an undertle swap au that flips around its main cast perfectly). RF, since its more of a community au, has sm different versions that also unfortunately feel kinda the samey?
like i mentioned earlier, outside of the pines twins, the most common swap youre gonna see is of pacifica and fiddleford. and i actually kinda like that— put fiddleford as someone who is in close proximity to the twins then literally who else than the girl dipper and mabel are both frequently shipped with, make tate be a bad dad to him. and pacifica, despite being a beach blonde valley girl stereotype, isnt ever implied to be stupid and is said by dipper (lost legends) that shes smart. if you wanna push the idea that a rich girl like her can be super smart, be an inventor, i say go for it. shes got the genes of an inventor in her anyway (TBOB) and like, yeah i like that.
and the other most common swap is... absolutely none. that is literally it💀 does anyone know where soos is?? wendy??? gideon?? like should i even ask where robbie is, because all ik is he got NOTHING here (and mind you i dont even care about him THAT much, i include him because hes in the zodiac which is my base for the cast). you can tell me to look hard for them, but thats emblematic of one of the reasons its hard to enjoy the most common interpretations of the au then imo
i feel bad for saying this but i think the main reason why sm RF fails is because its not about swapping characters who you see fit to swap, its about filling certain roles in the plot and in fandom cultute. you see sm of the F and P swap not because anyone actually thinks this is an interesting way of putting them in each others positions, but because fiddleford and pacifica are the most commonly shipped with the stan twins and d/m twins respectively. and hey im a sucker for d*pcif*ca as f*ddauth*r, being cute nerds together fucking slaps and i love them, but i think people just resort to these cus its EASY. and i feel like it sucks that soos, someone who is SO important to the Pines family gets kinda erased in the narrative from what ive seen. wendy, well she was already done dirty in canon so i cant blame the fandom for not gaf about her, but yeah you hardly see her too. gideon was the MAIN ANTAGONIST of s1 man, youd think he would have some kind of noteworthy role in a swap AU where he gets to be an adult. but ig its kind of the price of him not being a blurbo like fiddleford and pacifica. mind you i love pacifica to pieces and im happy she gets sm love but yeah its kinda odd i think
i think the best RF pacificas ive seen is her being swapped w lazy susan actually, considering her actual conclusion is her working in the greasy diner after all (plus dipper being a deadbeat dbdudhdu). GIGANTIC fan of that, because its not about her having to be involved in portal work the way fiddleford was but still clearly involved in some kind of personal drama w the twins.
anyway at the end it doesnt actually matter that i feel this way. most people who are doing these aus are doing it for themselves and their own satisfaction and thats great. im not satisfied because im not them and im not th e target audience, the people who make the art/fic are their own audience and i respect it. i just personally cant enjoy it much, hence why its hard to enjoy popular interpretations of the au for me. i think im just HELLA picky when it comes to this (and sm aus... god knows r*verse p*rtal aus also kinda peeve me off on how ford is characterized), and maybe one day ill just draw/write my own RF version thats all catered exactly for me <3
also if anyone is asking who soos should be swapped with jts obviously fiddleford. like mcgucket is an inventor and soos is the handyman, i think this is actually incredibly obvious shbsusbshs

I will be honest, white wine is more my type, but I prefer my Supernovas made of Red Wine (or the occasional Champagne). Chappell has found herself on a date with a succubus who wants to ‘Put her canine teeth in the side of my neck’! Sounds dangerous!
A tooth is ‘nyǔ’ in Nas’ibómmó while the canine portion was tough to derive because no compounds (we love our patrons). The verb for 'to rip' qarû was used as a source, first nominalized and put in the lative case for the meaning ‘tooth for ripping’, which led to us more generally expanding this use of the lative case into purposes.

infodump incoming (under cut)
listen the conlang actually makes perfect sense. it's not insane. it's Not insane. It's No-
alright so the word order is N where N means a Noun. you might reasonably ask how you would say literally anything. for example, the sentence "i spoke" has a subject and a verb in it. how would that even function.
well the verb is the easiest part, because it's just the word "speak" which is <qju> /ŋoi/. do Not think too hard about the orthograp-
the pronoun is also fairly easy you just mosey on to The Small Table
Tumblr media
and in it you can see that the pronoun <vk> /yk/ corresponds to the word "me" along with some other fancy information that doesn't actually matter for the purposes of this translation
so then we just stick it together to get <vk qju> right? Wrong
right okay so what we have to say is <qju lwpalvk>. what on god's flat green earth is <lw>? that's the Preposition marker. why is there a preposition in the sentence "i speak"? because the Speaking is occuring with a Subject set to "Me". this is also how most prepositions work. like in "i walked to the store", "the store" is an indirect object with the preposition "to" before it marking sort of a Lative Case. but this can be interpreted as the sentence "i walked" with the additional information "the destination of this action is the store". so it's more like "i walked, destination=store", which can then become "walked, subject=i, destination=store" and whaddya know that's precisely how it works in lwbizgelx'whkqjuiz i mean ygelx'whkqjuiz* i mean y'x'ujqju'whk'qygel*
so we have <qju> which isn't actually a Verb meaning To Speak but a Noun meaning The Action Of Speaking. by just saying <qju> on it's own we're asserting that speaking Occured in some capacity. we can then add more information by going <qju lwpalvk>. <qju> occured, but the <pal> (subject) is set to <vk> (me). thus, "i spoke". also did i say "i spoke" i meant "i speak" because this is explicitly set in the present tense. how is this set in the present tense? well if you just go on over to The Small Tabl-
okay but then we also have the suffix <-iz> which marks the accusative case and also turns verbs into passive voice (very intuitive reusage, i am still proud of this) so for example in older ygelx'whkqjuiz we could say <qju'vk> "i speak" or <qju'vkiz> "i am being spoken" but also <qjuiz'vk> is synonymous with <qju'vkiz> because of the neat correspondance. okay so this also means that <paliz> means exactly what you think it means, so we can form the modern sentence <qju lwpalvk lwpalizjlav lwdissvk> which means "i said those things to you" but then that's too wordy so we can actually drop the phrase <lwpal> and just turn it into an infix apostrophe <-'-> which is unpronounced and gives us <qju'vk'izjlav lwdissvk> which means the same thing and now <'iz-> is apparently a meaningful Prefix now which indicates you guessed it the Accusative Case
yeah so the language is normal

Also: one fun thing about having little actual formal linguistics education (ok about 3 hours short of a TESOL minor but most of it was sociolinguistics and not applied linguistics aka the class I was missing) and being into conlanging is that on the one hand I can know what I want a functions to be. On the other hand I don’t know the proper way to explain said function.
Aka the genitive case confuses me so I have a possessive case which may or not be an actual grammatical case according to Wikipedia (as well as an objective case and a lative case for similar reasons)
I’m currently tinkering with a proto-lang of a people that are roughly equivalent to like the Upper Paleolithic cultures (Aurignacian or Gravettian) of Europe so it’s like one of this setting’s very first languages so it can be a bit wonky

Proposal to make the English language better and/or worse. Add a lative case with the suffix "-ward." Instead of saying "I'm driving to the store," say "I'm driving storeward." I don't know what this achieves exactly, but I think it would be neat.

I was just writing notes on a lecture while having a headache and accidentally created the best word we should start using actually
jotkus
jot- from "jotkut" -kus from "joskus"
Therefore, this word expresses both "which, someone(s)" and "sometime".
The fun thing here is that both jotkut and joskus come from the same word "joku":
Jotkut is the nominative plural of "joku". Joku is actually a compound word of "jo-" (as seen in "joka") and "-ku" (as seen in "kuka"). Joskus comes from "joku" and the lative singular -s (as seen in "kauas")
This new construction of mine would therefore include
jo- + -t + -ku + -s which + plural + who + lative adverb
I have spent enough time procrastinating writing the rest of the notes now...

Cases in Rra
There are approximately 12 cases in Rra and they will stay as they are until i'll want otherwise...
Nominative + Accusative So if i'm understanding all this correctly, these two cases are fused together and doesn't have any markings.
Genitive Words in GEN marked with i- prefix. Example: Tsaka a igatemg(h)ie [place-of-GEN-speech] - place of speech.
Dative Words in DAT marked with ma- prefix. Example: Maa tgasi k(h)ii dsa mata [past-give you food DAT-they(sg)] - You gave them food.
Locative Words in LOC marked with n- prefix. Example: D(h)i nasa [on-LOC-ground] - On the ground.
Lative (could be called Allative, i guess) Words in LAT marked with ia- prefix. Example: Iakano [LAT-house] - To the house.
Ablative (maybe Separative) Words in ABL marked with ao- prefix. Example: Aokano [ABL-house] - Away from the house.
Comitative Words in COM marked with ts- prefix. Example: O aga k(h)ii tsnk'ego [with possession-you COM-kin] - with your family.
Instrumental Words in INS marked with te- prefix. Example: O tekega [with INS-tool] - by means of a tool.
Semblative Words in SEMBL marked with g- prefix. Example: Naa tsoda eidae geikano [present-be plural-tree SEMBL-plural-hous] - Trees are like houses.
Causal Words in CAUS marked with s- prefix. Example: Sk(h)ii [CAUS-you] - Because of you.
Privative Words in PRIV marked with (h)ii- prefix. Example: (H)iikano [PRIV-hous] - Homeless.
Vocative Words in VOC marked with e- prefix or e as a preposition. Example: Eme [VOC-mother] - Mother!

Word of the Week - Wednesday 19. 3. 2025
Annar
verb, transitive
to heal
I made this word last week, when I needed the word for "healer" into my example sentence for the word "gaennar" - "to turn." The word "healer" is derived from "to heal" using the suffix "-rin/rina/rini" which is pretty much equivalent to the English "-er" suffix. I might rework this later, because this is also a suffix I just. made up last week. For example, if I understand my own first language correctly, Czech has multiple of these suffixes that mean the same thing but are applied to different roots seemingly arbitrarily. I would like to look into that and maybe get inspired for some other features? I'll see.
In the meantime, enjoy the example sentence:
Jëriftigä kú rälpa, tänvi Hildjä. Aera ár änrina, þúva ár änakunnar.
"If you're feeling sick, go to Hilda. She's a healer, she can heal you."
lit.: "Feel-yourself-if you badly, go Hilda-to. Is she healer, can she from-heal-you."
gloss: feel<REFL.OBJ>-M.ATEM=COND 2SG badly, go-IMP-M Hilda-LAT. be.F.ATEM 3SG.F healer, can-F.ATEM 3SG.F ABL-heal<2DG.OBJ>-INF
Note: There are two things of note. Firstly, I am very much aware that I probably used the "ABL" tag incorrectly on the last word in the gloss. It's a morpheme that turns a verb into a... verb meaning the result of said verb? I am not entirely sure how this differs from the perfective-imperfective distinction, maybe it's just an artifact from translating from Czech where the perfective and imperfective forms of verbs are actually two separate verbs. Anyway, this morpheme is identical to the ablative marker. There is another one that's identical to the lative marker "jä," that turns a verb into a verb meaning the initiation of said verb. Sometimes, these triplets are just that, but sometimes, it's not that transparent, such as with the word jäþinnar and änþinnar, meaning "to begin" and "to end" respectively, with no "þinnar" verb. I. i don't know if this makes any sense whatsoever. sorry
The other thing to note, which will be a whole lot easier to describe, is the conditional marker "-ga/gä." I use a different abbreviation for it here than for the interrogative markers in my other WotWs, but it is in fact the same marker, marking the same mood. Kolic doesn't have separate interrogative and conditional moods, and instad uses one mood for both, letting context decide the function, which is (almost?) always clear enough.
