SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! Yes, the consistent greatness of Isabel Allende is shining bright today. She has written over 20 novels and this one, Violeta was such a delight. I wrote ✍🏾 A 100 year story that flies by. The saying is time flies when you’re having fun, and I think fun is the most apt descriptor for this story of Violeta Del Valle who was born in 1920 and wants her grandson to know her story and so she begins with her birth and takes the reader through her life. In her detailed missive to her grandson, she manages to include the history of not only the unnamed South American country of her upbringing but indeed the history of world events that affected her personally and the entire Del Valle clan. Although she realizes her grandson will be reading about all her personal entanglements, she doesn’t hold back, she brings all the heat and that helps spice up the novel and keeps the banal at bay. Allende has a way of keeping her prose clean and comfortable. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

The book was intriguing, and I finished it in one day. The writing perfectly painted how it feels to be a teenager growing up and coming to terms with your complex identity. The main character Aristotle is pessimistic, but his reluctance to see all the good in the world is what makes him relatable.

Benjamin Alire Sáenz knows how to encapsulate what it means to feel alone in a world where there are people you can lean on, but you’re standing in your own way of happiness. Sáenz is a wonderful storyteller and had me shedding a fear tears, and I’m left with quotes that will stay with me for time to come.

How I read it: On a warm Saturday afternoon with a lovely breeze to fuel the nostalgic atmosphere this book gives.

This photo is from a shoot I did with a friend (@Jadebiggavel on IG) back in 2016. I wrote some prose inspired by both the photos and the song “Ride” by Lana del Rey (which I couldn’t stop listening to at the time) that I will share in the next two posts. The following lyrics that open up the song are what inspired me in particular : “When the people I used to know found out what I had been doing, how I’d been living, they asked me why - but there’s no use in talking to people who have a home. They have no idea what it’s like to seek safety in other people - for home to be wherever you lay your head.”  Post 1/3.

Big News! I am so happy to report that I just joined @lasmusas, which is a fabulous collective of female and nonbinary Latinx #kidlit authors supporting and amplifying each other’s work. I can’t believe I get to hang out with these impressive authors and help get our voices heard. ✨ Because they’re needed. ✨ In the US, there are over 52 million people in the Latinx community, but in 2019 only 5.3% of children's books published featured Latinx main characters. ✨ Read that again. Only 5.3% of ALL the children’s books. ALL! Total. ✨ We need to change this. And it’s often one of the first things I talk about when asked how SMALL TOWN MONSTERS is different from other YA horror novels (which are surging right now). Both of my POV characters, Vera and Max, are multicultural Latinx teenagers with very diverse home lives. This matters. ✨ It’s a running joke that non-white characters are the first ones killed off in horror movies. But it’s true.
