“nightmares again?”
Matty frowned, pushing the blankets off his chest to sit up, reaching over the bedside table and turning on his reading lamp. His frown deepened when he realized that he was alone in the king size bed, George’s side of the mattress cool to the touch. He sighed, rubbing at his eyes groggily, before groping near blindly for his glasses. He slipped them onto his nose, and swallowed a yawn.
He shivered as his bare feet hit the cement floor, and he shuffled in the dim light until he found his slippers. He felt like the old man in a horror movie, gray hair and all, trudging through his darkened home, wrapped in the red and blue plaid flannel robe that Louis had gotten him for Christmas the year before.
“Hey,” said Matty softly, not wanting to startle George, but accidentally doing so anyway. He looked up sharply from where he sat at the kitchen table, a cup of tea, long since gone cold sitting in front of him. Matty yawned and hobbled over to the stove, intending to make them both a fresh cup, his knee protesting stiffly after spending the last few hours in bed.
“What are you doing up?” George asked softly, tracking Matty’s movements as he stood on his tiptoes, reaching to retrieve two fresh mugs from the top cabinet. His robe fell open as he stretched giving George a lovely view of his tattooed chest and toned stomach.
“Could ask you the same question,” said Matty, setting the mugs down on the counter. George looked down at the wooden surface, his cheeks pink.
“Couldn’t sleep,” he said at last, “and I didn’t want to wake you up with my tossing and turning.”
“You know I can’t sleep without you anyway,” Matty said, coming up behind George and wrapping his arms around the younger man’s broad shoulders. He pressed a kiss to his cheek savoring the warmth of George’s back as it pressed against Matty’s chest.
George just hummed in response, taking one of Matty’s hands in his own, holding tight, swiping his thumb back and forth against Matty’s palm as if trying to memorize the divots of his lifelines.
“Nightmares again?” Matty whispered, hesitating to break the calm that had settled over the kitchen, but needing to know. George nodded, giving Matty’s hand a squeeze.
“Yeah,” said George, his voice hoarse, “yeah.”
“Do you want to talk about it?” Matty asked softly, sometimes George wanted to talk about his nightmares, other times he just wanted Matty near. George sniffled, and Matty’s heart broke.
“You were dead,” he said quietly, “you ODed and I was too late,” he let go of Matty’s hand to swipe at his eyes and Matty took advantage of the shift in position to drop down onto the bench next to George, wrapping his arms around George’s hulking frame as he curled into himself, then into Matty’s chest.
“It was just a nightmare,” said Matty, “I’m alright, I’m right here.” He took George’s hand maneuvering it to press it against his bare skin, letting George feel the rise and fall of his chest. The steady beat of his heart.
“I know,” said George wetly, “I know, but it's just,” he took a shaky breath, “it was so real, and, and it could have been real. If I had been a few minutes later—”
“No,” said Matty, pressing harder on George’s hand. “No, stop that, I’m right here.” He took a deep breath George hand moving out then in with his lungs as he exhaled. “I’m alright,” he said, his own words growing watery as silent tears streamed down George’s cheeks.
“I know,” said George, leaning forward to bury his face in George’s shoulder. “But, but if I had been just a little later, if I planned on stopping for coffee but it was raining and I was lazy, if I had stopped it would have been too late and you would be gone, I would have had to find your body.” George hiccuped wetly, his breath hot against Matty’s skin.
“But you didn’t,” said Matty, rubbing what he hoped were soothing circles against George’s back. “And that was a long time ago, I’m okay, I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere as long as you’ll have me.”
“It just,” said George, “it felt so real.”
“Fuck,” said Matty taking a shaky breath of his own, “fuck, I’m so sorry for putting you through all of that, I was selfish, and it’s keeping you awake even years later, and I’m so sorry.”
“No,” said George, “no, you don’t have to be sorry, it wasn’t your fault, you were sick, I should be over it by now—”
The tea kettle whistled, and Matty apologized, detangling himself from George and quickly pouring the piping hot water into the mugs, then adding a drizzle of honey before bringing them back over and setting them on the table.
“I’m sorry,” Matty said quietly, nudging the mug towards George. “I’m sorry that I put you through that, and that it’s haunting you even now.”
George gave Matty a watery smile. “As long as you’re still here to haunt me in person.”
Matty chuckled, and leaned forward, pressing a chaste kiss to George’s dry lips. “Forever and always.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~ She would smile softly at me every so often as she messed with a strand of my hair that landed on her pillow. It was too early to get up and we had too much energy to fall back asleep. We were facing each other in bed as our boredom prolonged and time seemed to have stood still. I became hyper-aware of her in my half-state. The vermillion cotton chemise she wore to bed, how her hair tangles into a few scattered uzumaki since she's let it grow out, the faint aroma of the perfume I got her for a death day long passed, the dull hue of her ruby red lipstick stuck on her sweet lips, her entire being filled my senses. I stare lovingly at my wife- I truly cannot help myself either- she knows how she sways all of my past known human emotions when she looks away and pretends not to notice that I crave her and her attention.
 When she does look towards my eyes, I can feel the warmth of her smile and the heat in her cheeks. She would mumble something about staring at her as weird, but both of us know that she loves the attention but refuses to acknowledge it. How could I not stare at her? When today of all days was the day she was reborn? The day she became the woman she was meant to be?
Her verdant eyes glow as I rest my palm on the chiselled cheek that rests not on her pillow. “My love, why wouldn’t I be gazing at you and drinking you in as you radiate pure joy and bliss? It is the day you have been reborn all those years ago as the woman I know and love today! I cannot think about not enjoying every dying moment without you as I rise for the morning, work with you during the day, and rest with you in the evening!” With a brilliant flash of my sweet smile as I rejoice with the toothy grin she flares my way.
“My Deadly Dearest, you know just what to say to make a woman sentimental even in the early waking hours of the dawn! Do you have anything planned for your lovely wife’s birthday?” She purrs.
I nod a little, “I have a whole day planned out for the both of us… It can wait for a little longer though, I quite enjoy spending a spare restless moment with you, my ruby reaper.”
“Is it all a secret, dear, or can your heart-holder be let in on the plans?” She inquires, the faint purse of her lips appearing as I gazed at her to think. I start humming the faint orchestra of the new ballet we visited, I faintly remember the flower ballad, a waltz if memory served. I would have picked up the rest of the song had I been listening but I was mesmerised by how her phosphorescent eyes cavorted across the stage with the dancers. “Well, once our day starts officially, I was thinking of making you breakfast in bed," I pause for a moment and wrap my arms around her waist, "then I managed to score a private tour of the Oxford gardens. After the gardens, we can get a luncheon at a place of your choosing. I'll be sure to pay for us, " I send her a wink, "And then laissez le bon temps rouler".
She rolled her eyes at my Cajun French, our last anniversary trip, her suggestion being New Orleans, had ended with the both of us celebrating with new undead friends and lots of spirits that would make the living roll. "Reminding me of those nights in the French Quarter? I remember the last time I mentioned it to you at work, the blush on your face was cherry red and you mumbled for me to hush up for fear of who could hear". She looks at me quizzically before she lets out a light yawn, her sharp teeth almost making her resemble a cat yawning after being woken up from their noonly nap. " We still have a few more hours until we should start getting ready, my darling, I'm going to rest some more so we can be out as late as our bodies will let us”.
I nod some and pull her closer, our bodies already so tangled it would be hard to tell limb from limb in the morning, "I'm not stopping you from getting your beloved beauty rest, please, close your eyes and let your mind take you to its dream states.” I gaze at her lovingly for a moment before she shifts her head to rest on my chest, “je t'aime mon coeur.” I mumble to her.
She sighs happily as I speak to her in one of her mother tongues and orientates herself so her voice wouldn’t be obscured from being buried into my clavicle, “You dare speak to me in such a way before I must go to bed? You know I love it when you speak to me in French, mon amour… keep that up and I will have you speaking to me in only muffled breaths and heady wails,” A faint crimson swells within my vessels, “I may not be as good as I was when we visited the French Quarter, but I’m sure with enough petting we can compromise,” She pauses dramatically, “ Alas, we must wait until later, you still have a day planned and I’m sure you would love to be able to stand.” I can almost feel the cheeky grin that creeps onto her pale face.
I look down at her and shake my head at her slightly, “I sometimes wonder how I ended up marrying you, darling. But yes, with what I have for us tomorrow I believe it would be mutually beneficial if we were able to stand for long periods of time. Now get some more rest, you nympho-bastard”, I play at her as she pucks her lips up at me, I rest a kiss on her awaiting lips and mumble a small ‘I love you’ before she shuts her eyes.
To help guide her to rest I go back to humming the waltz I hardly remembered. She is one to fall asleep quickly when she hasn’t slept well, and today is a perfect example. Our supervisor has been working her to no end while I rest uneasily at the office when she doesn't return for our usual luncheon. She deserves these next few days off and the plans I have made for her, if not for her birthday, then for her sanity. Mr Spears be damned if he tries to call us in when she has so diligently changed her ways and became the respectable -yet flirty-  reaper I knew she could be, “I am so glad I married you, my beautiful wife, my ruby red reaper, the holder of my heart, my everything. Later will be filled with nothing but love and celebration of you. Just like those nights in the french quarter. Those nights we spent together I was worshipping you as you drank yourself to the floor and as I dragged you to bed to rest and recover for the next day of debauchery. I remember how the emeralds we have that are our eyes glimmered as you gazed at me from the bed while I tended to you, the soft mumble of ‘je t'aime’, ‘Mon amour, tu te soucies beaucoup de moi’ and with your arms out wide for me, ‘Viens me câliner, ma belle’”, I let out a light laugh that turns to a light yawn, “Your french is beautiful my darling, and I can only hope to reach your grace one day. We are guaranteed eternity so learning it and speaking it with you is only a matter of time”. I nestle closer to her and yawn once more, “Pour l'instant, laissez-nous dormir. Je t'aime, Grelle” I shut my eyes and sleep finds me almost instantly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some rough translations ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cajun French "laissez le bon temps rouler" "Let the good times roll"
French “je t'aime mon coeur” "I love you sweetheart" "mon amour" "my love" "je t'aime" "I love you" "Mon amour, tu te soucies beaucoup de moi" "My love, you care a lot for me" or "My love, you care a lot about me" "Viens me câliner, ma belle" "Come give me a hug, beautiful" “Pour l'instant, laissez-nous dormir. Je t'aime, Grelle” "For now, let us sleep. I love you, Grelle."

[images ID: three images of a comic titled "one must imagine sisyphus happy" by druid-for-hire. it is a visual narrative beginning with someone with wrist pain (depicted by bright orange nerves) working at a drafting table. the reader is shown the same wrist as the person uses it for many everyday tasks such as carrying a grocery basket, pushing elevator buttons, typing, and doing dishes, until the pain dissolves all the panels into chaos. the person then performs several physical therapy exercises until the pain subsides. they sit back down at a desk with their laptop, sigh, and begin typing. a small spark of pain reappears. end id]
a fun little piece i made during the semester and submitted into our school comic anthology! (which you can buy at the Static Fish table at MoCCAFest in NYC ;] ). it's about artists and injury

Alfred's new ward making sure everyone is having great day during their day off from crime whether they want to or not.
Previous original post
Damian knew from day one of meeting alfred's new ward that he was going to be trouble..
He may have been stalking the kid doing alfred's work while alfred sat down in a comfy couch with a plate of fresh jasmine tea, his prescription medince bottle at ready and a raspberry strudel to nibble on.
He ain't going to replace his favorite Butler, not now, not ever. So Damian got Tim and Dick to help sabotage this heathen from taking over...Not knowing this kid was expecting their over the top sabotages. They tried scaring him with Titus but the little traitor lay there on his back getting belly rubs like it was heaven itself.
Changing the plumbing in his shower to freezing cold, but he walk out there refreshed. Tim trying to look of anything to blackmail him only for the batcomputer to go off the frizz with a virus.
Alfred did make sure to have his work sort out alphabetical because he is the Glue that keep these Wayne Manor going and everyone living in it not because caveman style creatures of the night.
Danny made sure Bruce didn't escape to his batcave on his supposed day off after 96 hours without sleep and spite driven nature, and don't even come with Justice never sleep excuses is going to run by him. He got Alfred's speical Bruce's tranquilizer gun at ready and he is not hesitating to shot you Bruce.
He does kept Tim from overdoing with the coffee addiction, giving him a better offer of coffee as long as he goes to sleep. Dick will still talk about Saturday night when Tim tries to sneak out to do some more investigating in the batcave only to see Danny dragged a unconscious Tim back to his room, a two tranquilizers to the back and one of his arm, though he didn't mention the Danny's glowing cat light green eyes that shine in the dark.
Danny's funny puns neon ghost stickers made dick's days, every morning as he goes to get his lunch, and he really want to know where he get them from.
Danny did actually helped a lot with the Wayne Manor as it never been cleaner before, Jason visited one time even mentioned that the chandelier never feel so clean to hang on from, not a speck of dust on it.
Damian getting a new animals book/documentaries, a new knifes for the collection or art supplies that match his demands in a way that keep his stabby nature at sate and bay for now.
Barb, Cass and Duke are amused by the fact that Bruce, Tim and Damian are having a little mid crisis that danny making them have day off on certain days such as holidays.
All this free time actually had alfred's going back to old hobbies that were nearly long forgotten such as conversations with old dear friends, practicing his old shooting skills, and having well deserved rest. Once his arm was healed, he stil did his duty along side with Danny as it was much quicker to do together as two people at hand.
What they will probably find out later on in the future that danny is actually Bruce's great grand uncle from his older sister side, and that he had disappeared when he was 20 years old in a old spooky town that vanished and still on today uneXplained series after his great grandmother moved to gotham. (But that another story for next post)

That's our baby hero
Protective Amity Park Au but maybe not like you would think?
Danny's identity wasn't as hidden as Sam, Tucker, Jazz and him thought. His identity was an open secret, in fact his whole town knew that Danny was their hero Phantom, well everyone but his oblivious parents but they were a case of their own. The thing was his entire town knew about his oh so big secret identity and that he was the one trying to save them from ghosts 90% of the time as well as from his own parents crazy inventions at times.
Dash shoving him into lockers like a bully? Danny didn't look good and Dash tried in crude ways to give him reasons to skip classes to rest. It also later was a good move to hide him from snoopy government agents also known as the Guys in White or GIW for short. Really his bullying played perfectly into him finding creative ways to get Danny to skip classes for rest.
Valerie hunting him and other ghosts? Well she was hunting him in the very beginning, but then it became an attempt to make him stop fighting the ghosts on their behalf but in the end it turned into her trying her best to be the support to him that Sam and Tucker couldn't be in a fight. Let alone taking 'night shifts' from him so Danny could get at least a good nights rest every now and then.
Sam's parents the Mansons? Sure they didn't like him that much from the start anyway but most of their anger later stemmed from the danger their daughter was willingly get into to help their reckless teenhero that shouldn't be a hero at his age anyway. Let alone shoulder the responsible for their entire town at the age of 14.
Tuckers parents? They were glad any time Danny stayed over with their son, even attempting to subtitle convince the boys to have more sleepovers at their home. Surely being a hero with ghost powers and living in a house of ghost hunting parents wasn't easy on Danny. They were glad that they could give him some peace at their home. They willingly ignored it when Danny showed up late night in Tuckers room, getting patched up by their son.
The entire town apparently hating him with all these negative newspapers and comments? All fake in a desperate attempt to get the 14 years old teenager with a bad sleeping schedule and powers to stop risking his damned life, half-life. Surely if they appeared not thankful the kid would get the hint and stop playing hero. Like seriously he was a kid! Who's bright idea was it to let a kid fight these dangerous appearing ghosts?! Oh right the poor kids parents were incompetent when it came to ghost hunting and it wasn't like they could just up and do it without destroying the kids confidence. Plus the GIW were no help either.
Vlad becoming Mayor was not exactly their plan but they thought maybe they could use that as some help to convince Danny more that he didn't need to play hero for them just because he got powers now. That didn't turn out like they hoped and THAT plan was dismissed quickly. Especially when the GIW showed up. They learned their lesson sort of quickly after that, at least when it came to people from out of Amity did not mean well.
Lancer, at first when Danny first showed up as Phantom, had attempted to get into contact with the Justice League several times, so that Danny would actually get the professional help he needed and get some sleep at night as well as the time he needed for his schooling so that heroing wouldn't be the only career path he would be forced into. The additional point of getting the kid training too for his powers was also very tempting, there are only so many chemical breakers they could allow the him to break before they HAD to sort of ban him from touching them again.
But when the GIW appeared in their town they stopped trying to reach the Justice League. Suspecting that that was the answer they sent in regards to their SOS calls. Amity Parks protectiveness over their teenheroes that sacrificed to much skyrocketed. They started to sabotage the Agents subtitle. Always working within the limits of the orders and finding the loop holes.
"Oh but we did comply, not our fault that you guys tripped and let Phantom escape."
"Wupp, sorry I got that from the Fentons for self defence, but it looks like I need to work on my aim."
"I am so sorry, my car is stuck! See my tire is popped I can't get out of your vans way."
The fact that Amity Parks weather report was more a report on the ghosts, the Fenton parents and the GIW was all a tactic for them all to keep each other informed so they could execute any step to ensure their -by now- towns sweethearts safety. Even if they still tried to turn the poor kid away from being a hero with all the unnecessary mean comments and articles.
So when one day a hero from the Justice League showed up it was predictable that they all were suspicious of it. Even more so when that hero came with a bunch of teenage heroes. Apparently they were here to investigate a bunch of ignored calls one of the teenheroes found in their call logs. Some of the adults eyed Lancer who in turn was glaring at the heroes fessed up, he hadn't attempted to call them ever since they decided to sent the GIW into their town. Which apparently was more of a cover as these heroes showed an interest in the Fentons research of Ectoplasm pretty quickly.
Well now Batman and his flock of bats and birds were confronted with a very unhappy town that was apparently very protective of their hero and 'accidentally' continued to manage to block them from making contact with said teenhero. And who where these Guys in white suits that tried to suck it up to Batman? Better question why was the entire town suddenly hostile towards them when they started to look into the Fenton Family that had a connection to Lazarus Water?
Meanwhile Danny is confused by his towns newfound favouritism towards Batman and his entourage and how whenever he went to find out what was that about everyone seems to deflect. Even Sam, Tucker and Jazz were confused by what was going on!

Late Night Call Prompts
“One more night, and then you’ll finally be back in my arms.”
“Your last emergency call was you crying over not having any more sweets at your place, so excuse me for being distrustful.”
“I wish you were here with me.”
“Could you just… stay on the line? It’s weird having to fall asleep without you.”
A quick call to confirm that they got home safely.
“I know I said you could call me anytime, but… It’s the middle of the night.”
“You’ve been holding the phone to your ear this whole time?” “...Yes? How else would I have been able to talk to you?”
“You’re two rooms over. Why are you calling?”
“Pick up, pick up, pick up.”
“Now?”
“I know we said we’d take a break from us, but I miss you. You and your love for cacti and weird bedtime stories.”
“Take your fucking late-night calls elsewhere! I’m trying to fucking sleep here!”
“You pretending that cushion is me?” “Maybe I did. But then I had to realize that it’s a better cuddler than you are.”
“Sorry. I had my phone on silent.”
“We saw each other earlier. Why didn’t you tell me then?”
Getting a call from a hospital/police station/etc. late at night.
“Then why do you keep picking up?”
“You still there?” “Mhhhmmmm.”
“Did you really think you could run away from me, [name]? No, I will find you everywhere.”
“Can you– Can you pick me up? Please?”
“Let me get this straight: You’re calling me at 3 am, disrupting my beauty sleep on a workday, to ask me out?
“Are you alone?”
“I know it’s stupid, but I needed to hear your voice.”
Threatening to hang up on the other every time they mention something specific.
“What are you wearing right now?”
“Ugh. I knew it was a mistake to give you my number.”
“Why are you whispering?”
“...The only reason why I did pick up was because it’s you.”
“Are you seriously suggesting there are benefits to not sleeping next to me?” “You always steal my covers! I almost had forgotten what it feels like to sleep through the night, all sound and warm.”
“Call me cheesy or a fool, but I needed to wish you sweet dreams.”
“...I thought you forgot about me.” “I’m sorry. Today has been… a lot and I– I wish I could have called you sooner.”

Prompt 333
I once more believe Battinson Batman needs to be given a child. Or multiple. Multiple children. I am also once more rotating Ghosts Have Wings Au.
So Batman, still early in his whole vigilante career ends up busting a shipment, nothing too surprising there. Pretty usual honestly. Except for what was in one of the crates already open. Because it looks like some sort of gemstones but… perfectly spherical. Strange. Suspicious.
But it’s also late, er, early in the morning, and the GCPD is notoriously corrupt, so like, he’s not going to just leave the weird gemstones, each about the size of a plum or so. (Dear Gotham he’s apparently hungry, and might inwardly vow to never let anyone realize what his tired mind decided to use as measurement)
So he, unknowingly spurred on by more than just a slight bit of ecto contamination, takes the strange spheres back home. Just puts them in his pockets and heads back to the manor that they moved back into after the whole Riddler mess. (He even found a cool cave! With a bunch of terrifying bats, but they made a glass separator! For safety!)
But in Bruce’s defense of forgetting about them, he’s more than a little tired and hungry and just wants to sleep for a bit, y’know? So maybe he forgets about the gems as he falls asleep in the chair in the cave (Alfred was not pleased!) until he starts digging around for them. Erm. Did they fall out somewhere?? There’s no holes in his belt pockets…
And maybe these sort of things shouldn’t slip his mind, the spheres had felt Weird with a capital W, but he gets forced to a circus and there’s an… accident. So maybe he pushed it away as not important because there’s now an angry grieving eight-year old living with him and he’s panickedly reading any and all sort of parenting books he can get a hold of because he has no clue what he’s doing.
Yeah, maybe his back is itching like crazy no matter what he tries, and maybe he threw up the other day, but it’s fine. This is fine.
….
Oh dear Gotham those are feathers, this is not fine- ALFREEED!

Can I please have meet cute/weird with mistaken villain! Danny (but really just a engineer and or chem student) and the one being put on investigation cause Danny is a day villain(not really)! Duke
Technically, Danny Fenton is innocent. Technically.
Duke wants to give him the benefit of the doubt, especially since he’s having so much trouble finding solid evidence that Danny is stealing from a wide variety of people, but he’s been burned before by trying to see people as better than they were. It doesn’t change the fact that Oracle’s cameras keep spotting Danny right before a building on the street is broken into and something stolen. He’s always just walking down the sidewalk; no one has spotted him entering or exiting a building, but he’s around far too often to be unconnected to these burglaries.
It doesn’t help that strange, petty crimes have been on the rise since Danny first arrived in Gotham.
So.
Danny Fenton is technically innocent.
Duke is trying to prove that he’s not.
Maybe I’m looking too closely, he thinks, going over Danny’s sparse file in the Hatch. Maybe Danny’s only one person in a bigger operation.
He could just be the lookout, the runner, the information gatherer who marks which buildings to hit. He may even be the scapegoat, the sacrificial lamb; Danny has no support in Gotham, no family, no job. There would be no one to help him if he got arrested or injured in a fight. He’s a freshman college student from Illinois who should be unprepared for life in Gotham but is somehow managing to survive like a native.
There’s a lot about Danny that doesn’t add up.
Duke has seen plenty of different people since he first went out as the Signal. He’s tried to be kind and give people the benefit of the doubt, but it leads to his loved ones being put in danger. Some people are truly evil, some working on a malicious agenda, some are misguided in their beliefs, and some are desperate people who see no other way to move forward.
He’s not sure yet which on Danny is, but he’s hoping Danny is just desperate and needs a little help to get out of a life of crime.
Which leads to the next problem: Duke has no idea what Danny is steal, or why. He hits both rich and poor folks, civilians and members of the mob, and once, notably, stole something right out of Cobblepot’s office. Allegedly, at least, since no one saw him enter or exit the office, not even the security cameras.
But added to the whispers going around about a new group in Gotham snatching people up from the streets, and some strange green substances found in warehouses often raided by police for the frequent drug labs that pop up in them…
It doesn’t look good for Danny. Especially when a few of the items he stole were found where people either vanished or where that green substance has been found.
A week of analysis in the Batcave and they still don’t know what it is.
Both Damian and Jason suspected Lazarus water, but the composition was completely different. By the look of the molecular structure, it shouldn’t have been in a liquid form at all.
All these findings lead back to one person who may have answers: Danny Fenton.
According to Tim, who’s already broken into Danny’s dorm room and checked over all the labs he has classes in, Danny has some concerning items in his possession. Various inventions and little metal knick-knacks put together by a practiced hand. He was also the one to find all the information that went into Danny’s file when it was first being made: social media posts, school report cards, news articles about his parents… everything.
And then he had an emergency mission to take with the Titans that swept him out of Gotham leaving Duke to tackle this investigation on his own.
He doesn’t have Tim’s natural skill in stalking and invading privacy. He hates breaking into people’s spaces and following them around, but needs must and he has to force himself to work through the discomfort.
It’s a good thing he did, too. Danny’s leaving his dorm after his last afternoon class, hood up to hide his face and something held in the front pocket of his hoodie. He ducks around people on the sidewalk easily, almost as if he’s gliding through the crowd instead of walking.
Duke follows from above, bending the light around him to hide him from sight.
He walks for some time, weaving through alleys and streets as if he’s been in Gotham his whole life, leaving behind the university campus to head towards Otisberg. There’s something strange about the way Danny walks, as if he’s moving around people who aren’t there, guided by something Duke can’t hear. Even using his meta abilities doesn’t do much beyond show him where Danny’s going to be in the next few seconds.
He continues to follow Danny on the rooftops, walking along the edge to keep him in sight.
Then Danny stops behind an apartment building and tilts his head back to look up at it. He tilts his head to the side, then nods and looks around the empty alley. Duke crouches down, keeping his eyes on Danny in the hopes of catching him in the act—
Danny disappears.
Duke curses under his breath and jumps down from the roof, putting more strength into his abilities as soon as his feet touch the ground.
The space where Danny was has a faint outline, oddly enough. He’s never seen that before. From it is a semi-transparent trail, smoke-like and a pale green leading into the building. It goes straight into a wall, as if Danny walked through it.
He can’t go in and search the entire apartment, but he can grapple up and take a look into the hallways to see where Danny’s heading. If he was looking up, then that’s where he should be heading.
It doesn’t take any effort to scale the building. There are ledges and windowsills and plenty of handholds for him to propel himself off of, and paired with his powers, Duke is able to find the correct floor in just under two minutes.
The green smoke slowly dances through the air of the ninth floor, on the east side of the building. If he’s been counting the rooms correctly, then the target of tonight’s burglary has to be apartment 924.
The curtains are drawn on the window he makes his way over to, and his abilities don’t show him anything helpful for the immediate future. He hates going in blind, especially to a civilian’s home, but capturing Danny takes priority. Duke picks the lock and slides the window up slowly, making sure it stays quiet, then slips into an empty bedroom.
He makes his way out into the hallway on silent feet, keeping a wary eye on the thin smoke strands of green, curling along the walls. The rest of the apartment is empty as well, pale sunlight slanting across the floor through the blinds.
Everything is still and silent. Danny’s nowhere to be found.
Did he miss Danny leaving, somehow? Was this a misdirect to get him out of the way while Danny stole from another location? Did he know Duke was following him?
But no, his ears pick up on the faint sound of clothes rustling.
Cautiously, Duke turns towards the front door, where the door to the coat closet is open. He focuses on what’s going to happen in the next twenty seconds and sees Danny panic, then disappear from sight again, but a transparent outline of his body is visible just enough to show him where he runs to. Best not to spook him; Duke pulls at the light around him and bends it to hide him from sight.
Then he moves along the wall, getting around the open door without bumping into anyone or anything.
A figure in front of the coats, shoving them to the side roughly, flickers in and out of view, almost like a reflection in water, distorted by ripples on the surface.
Danny pops back into visibility suddenly, scowling at the coats. “Are you sure it’s in here?” he asks the empty air.
There is no answer, but Danny acts like there is. He rolls his eyes and says, “It’s a favor. That I’m doing for you. I can literally stop right now and you wouldn’t be able to stop me.” He shoves aside another heavy winter coat, then sighs. “Why don’t you look for it, and then tell me where it is.”
He steps back and bumps into Duke.
Danny whirls around, eyes wide, and blast of green light has Duke crashing back into the wall, trying to blink spots out of his eyes.
“Wait!” he yells, grabbing for Danny before he can run off. “I just wanna talk!”
“Standing right behind me like a serial killer does not make you look like someone who wants to talk!” Danny yells back, slipping through his hands like mist.
“I just have a few questions!”
“Well, I have a question: why?!”
“Will you hold still, we’re being too loud!”
Danny escapes to the other side of the apartment, next to a window looking fully prepared to fling himself out of it. But he does stop yelling, so Duke is counting it as a success.
“Why is the Signal coming after me?” Danny asks, glaring at him suspiciously.
“Dude,” Duke says, “You’ve been seen outside of every single building that’s had a burglary since you first arrived in Gotham. All the Bats are after you, they just sent me because I’m the only one active during the day.”
“All the Bats?” Danny repeats, losing what little color he had in his face.
He looks legitimately scared, pale enough to be concerning, and Duke drops his guard and tries to relax the tension in the apartment. “I’m not gonna turn you into the cops or anything. I just had questions and you seem like the most likely person to have answers. That’s it.”
Danny still looks wary, ready to run at a moment’s notice, but he doesn’t leave when Duke approached casually, leaning his weight against the couch.
“So,” he begins, “What’s the deal with all the thievery? It’s rarely something super rare or expensive.”
There’s a long few minutes where Danny doesn’t answer, looking anywhere but at Duke. Then he twitches a bit and glares off to the side, and says, “I taking items that are contaminated with ectoplasm to help ghosts move through the veil and leave Gotham.”
That tells him nothing! That just gives Duke more questions! But at least it’s an answer, the first one any of them have got.
“I think you’re gonna have to explain a little more.”
“Ghosts are real, alright?”
“Yes.”
Danny stops. Squints at him. “What do you mean, ‘yes’?”
“Ghosts are real,” Duke repeats, “There are a few who help heroes or are heroes themselves, but that’s more on the magic side of things so I’m not super familiar with it.”
“Magic,” Danny says slowly. “Sure, alright. Um. Yes, ghosts are real. And there are a ton in Gotham who need help moving on, but they’re too weak to get past the veil. Something about Gotham has made the veil super strong, so they need a little boost to get through. Additional ectoplasm bonded helps with that.”
“And that’s why you’re stealing random things?”
“The ghosts I help can kind of sense ectoplasm-infused things, but they need me to grab them since they can’t hold anything without a physical body.”
Duke nods slowly. “Okay, that’s starting to answer some things. We have found those objects in the last places missing people were seen. Any idea what’s going on with that?”
“Yeah, those people were already dead.”
The way Danny says the most concerning answers as if they’re nothing is really throwing Duke off his game. He was expecting to be calm and serious to keep Danny from freaking out too much and look like a legitimate hero. But as soon as Danny started talking, all his nerves fell away and Duke is left grasping for composure.
“They were…”
“They were ghosts, yeah. And they needed to get through the veil. But they were also able to possess their own bodies and didn’t realize they were dead until I had to break the news to them, which is why it looks like living people just up and disappeared.”
“Okay… What about the green stuff we’ve been finding?”
“Ectoplasm.” Danny holds up a hand and a neon green light surrounds it. Except it looks more solid than light, as if it can be touched, and it moves on its own like fire around Danny’s fingers. “It’s what ghosts are made of.”
Oh. If Danny has ectoplasm, does that mean…
“Are you dead?” Duke asks, heart dropping.
Instead of looking upset about the question, or even disturbed by it, Danny just shrugs and waves his hand back and forth. “A little.”
“Okay, so let me get this straight,” Duke says, trying to resist the urge to rub his temples. It’s a habit he didn’t mean to pick up from Batman, and it would just look silly with his helmet in the way. “You’re just doing all this to help ghosts?”
“Yeah. Basically. They asked for help man, of course I was going to help them.”
Danny’s a good person. He’s just a good person to ghosts. But this is good news either way, and he can let the others know that Danny isn’t the next Catwoman and is entirely unconnected from any drug production. Everything that made him look like a criminal is just the fault of ghosts.
“Speaking of,” Danny continues, “Looks like they found what they need, so I’m going to grab that real quick.” He pushes off of the wall and heads for the closet again, moving past Duke without any fear. Duke follows, keeping a few feet of distance between them so Danny doesn’t feel trapped, and watches as he shoves aside the coats again and pulls a shoebox out of the depths of the closet. From it, he takes a single intricate lace headband and holds it up.
It looks normal, if a little old, but when Danny sends ectoplasm through it, the lace lights up and holds the glow.
He pulls some strange contraption out of his pocket and holds it up to the headband. It makes a few beeps, then Danny mutters, “7.4 millisieverts. That’s enough to get you through the veil.”
Another concern Duke can let go of: Danny’s not creating weapons like his parents have, he’s just measuring ectoplasm through his own inventions.
Maybe he could talk to Bruce or Tim about getting Danny an internship at the R&D lab in Wayne Enterprises? That way they could keep a closer eye on him while seeing what he can create in some of the best laboratories in the country.
Well, it might take having them meet Danny before they trust him enough for that, but Duke is sure he can make it happen.
“I better go see this through, then,” Danny says, shoving the contraption back into his hoodie pocket. He gives Duke a small awkward wave, then pops out of visibility. “I’ll see you around, I guess?” he disembodied voice hedges, and Duke smiles.
“I’m sure I’ll be able to find you again.”
“Cool. I gonna go now!”
He doesn’t see any sign that Danny’s left, but he gets a feeling that he’s alone now, the apartment suddenly emptier than it was before.
As strange and concerning as Danny and all his bizarre actions were, Duke is glad he was able to finally talk to him and get some answers. Knowing how Gotham pulls people him in, it’s only a matter of time before the other Bats are exposed to Danny’s kind of strange. He’s already looking forward to it.
For now, though, he has a file to update in the Hatch; POTENTIAL THREAT will be removed and replaced with GHOST HELPER.
If anyone goes snooping into his files and gets confused, then that’s their problem. Duke’s explained enough. And Danny can take care of the rest, once they go through the effort of tracking him down. Duke's done his part, he's ready for the rest of them to step up to his level.
He can’t wait to see what other kind of trouble Danny can get it into.

sometimes I think they put some sort of...aural drug in mediocre movies. If I played all these thoroughly middling movies in reverse, would I hear a satanic message telling me, YOU WILL BE TEMPTED BEYOND ALL REASON TO WRITE FANFIC ABOUT---YES, THE MOVIE YOU HALF-WATCHED WHILE COOKING AND ANSWERING EMAILS. YES. YES, I---YES, I'M SERIOUS. YES, THIS MOVIE. THE CHARACTERIZATION OR LACK THEREOF MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. UH HUH. MHM. YEP. LOOK, I DON'T MAKE THE RULES, I JUST WORK HERE OKAY?

[ID: A colored, digital two page comic featuring Danny and Jazz from Danny Phantom. Danny wears a baggy hoodie over a shirt and jeans. Jazz wears a v-neck sweater and shorts.
Fentonworks, after curfew: Danny reaches for the doorknob to his bedroom, breathing out and gripping his shoulder.
"Where were you?" says Jazz, hands on her hips, making Danny jump. "Look, I know that Mom and Dad don't really care, but I do. You can trust me." She looks sad. "What's going on with you?"
"None of your business, Jazz." He looks irritated. He reaches for the doorknob again, muttering, "Just lemme sleep."
"Wait!" is written in all caps. Jazz reaches out, pulling at the hood of his jacket. Danny turns and raises his arm out of his hoodie, revealing an ectoplasmic injury. "Fuck off!" he yells.
Jazz pulls her hand away, startling backwards. Then, she looks sad as she says, "Oh, Danny…"
Fade out. They now stand in the Fentonworks bathroom, with Danny sitting on the toilet and Jazz hovering over him, cleaning a wound on his left shoulder. He's now in a binder and the original ectoplasmic wound has been treated. She scolds him and he grins nervously, curling in on himself. End ID.]

# 47
The feeling was odd, maybe even wrong when hero met eyes with villain.
For two months the villain had completely disapered from the world after their last fight with supervillain, and for once the hero had actually thought supervillain had done it.
The Hero thought supervillain had actually killed villain. however now they knew they were wrong.
How could villain be dead if hero could see villain just standing their from across the street?
The Hero knew something was off when they just saw villain standing their out in the open in their villain attire.
The hero looked around at all the people who were walking by, not a single person was saying a thing not even batting an eye as they walked past the villain.
The villain just stood there like they didn't have a care in the world, it was as if nothing around them matter anymore.
The villain didn't react, not even the slightest bit when they met eyes with hero.
To the hero they saw something aching to hopelessness in villains eyes.
No words, No smile, Nothing. In other words the villain was like a blank slate wiped clean. However the fact still remained, villain was here.
The Hero swallowed as a bitter and sour taste started to linger in the back of their mouth when they spoke.
"What happened to you villain?" The hero had asked.
The way villain flinched when hero had called out to them was as if villain was surprised to hear their own name.
Quickly the villain wasted no time crossing the gap between the hero and themself.
Grasping for straws the villain frantically asked the hero a single question.
"C-can you see me?" The villain had asked with wide eyes.
It was only when a civilian walked through villain did the hero finally realize they were talking to a ghost.

somehow for some reason the knights take on a spell that lights up the scars that litter their bodies. arthur has the most with leon as a close second. gwaine and percival and pretty much tied for third though gwaines are much smaller - from more brawls than battles. elyan and lancelot have their fair share but less that the others. that is until they turn to see merlin lit up like a goddamn glowstick. the others (bar lancelot) had been expecting maybe a few nicks from being on the outskirts of battles or mishaps from working on a farm back in ealdor, not……this. the light (which shines through their clothes as if the fabric isn’t even there) is practically blinding on merlin, covering every inch of skin. more so than even arthur. lancelot prompts them all to move on and everyone does, holding themselves back from asking the questions they desperately want answered

DP x DC Prompt: Delayed Reactions
Danny's powers didn't activate all at once after going into the Ghost Portal, in fact they hadn't even fully realized what happened for months. They assumed the change in appearance was just their eyes adjusting to the flashing because of how quickly it appeared then vanished again. But, as more things started happening to Danny and started changing, Danny couldn't help but wonder if maybe his accident had resulted in more than a permanent star that ran up his left arm to his heart.
He didn't tell Sam or Tucker though, after all Meta-Humans were so rare that there was no way they would believe him! Plus, if he told them then it would only be a matter of time before more people knew. So, he kept it to himself.
Which worked until Summer Break when Danny went to Gotham with his parents and Jazz for a Ghost Hunting Exp. Danny had no interest in 'Ghost Hunting' (though he had begun to do more of it after he realized that he could kind of sense and see the ghosts), so instead of listening to the expo he was going around learning more and more about the city. Gotham had some amazing other exhibits, an observatory, museums with huge space displays, and more interesting things than Ghosts.
Plus, it had the highest population of heroes!
Danny didn't expect that his second day in Gotham would end up so differently from the first one. It all started with a little girl about nine who had been crossing the street when chaos broke loose. An explosion on the next block rocked the entire city, causing Danny's skin to crawl, but what mad him sick was the fact that the explosion had thrown a car directly towards the little girl and a crowd of people.
Everybody else scattered, including the woman the girl had been walking with who seemed to forget her in an instant as they got out of the way of the car. But the little girl didn't move, just started terrified at the approaching car.
"Get out of the way!" People shouted to the girl, but unlike the rest of them Danny's instincts were screaming one thing.
Protect.
Danny ran forward as quickly as his legs could manage as he tried to beat gravity itself. Danny made it to the girl without a second to spare, wrapping her into a hug.
"Please work, please work, please work!" Danny thought, struggling to get his powers to work as he felt himself turn intangible with the girl turning intangible with him.
No sooner did his powers kick in did the car slam into the ground where they were standing before it bounced and rolled down the street, leaving a dent around the two of them but leaving both Danny and the girl untouched.
Danny let his power drop, as the girl looked at him for a second before she burst into tears and hugged him. Danny's vision swam as he hugged her back, fixing her hair.
"I gotcha, you're okay..." Danny told her, then let her go as the woman who had left her in the street called her.
The girl sniffled, then ran to the woman as Danny tried to stand. He could hear people talking, cheering and some were even applauding but it all sounded really far away. He could also hear another car approaching, but as his vision faded and his body felt as though it was filled with led nothing felt important anymore.
---
The Bats had tried to race to get to the civilians before the car hit them and had failed. Thankfully, the majority of people had managed to get out of the way to a safe distance but there was a little girl still in the road. None of them wanted to see the girl die, but they knew realistically they couldn't make it to her.
But somebody did.
No sooner did the stranger save the girl and let her go did they collapse into the middle of the street.
Suddenly it was no longer 'save civilians from a car that got partially blown up in Penguins newest scheme' but 'get the unknown Meta out of the street before his face was exposed to every media outlet throughout the city'.
