i will say, i still have not quite answered to my own satisfaction the question of whether the two thes in this comparative correlative construction i've been chewing on are the same, etymologically speaking, and just take on a different sense in their respective clausal contexts because it's clear from word order/structure (more on this in a sec) that one is effectively the protasis-analogue and one the apodosis-analogue (this being my guess atm); or if one of them derives from, idk, the relative [sense of what's technically, as previously mentioned, the same] pronoun instead, making it very literally analogous to latin eo... quo; or, i suppose, if actually these two theories are reconcilable via what seems to have been a fundamental blurriness between the demonstrative/relative pronoun in old english, such that it's not actually possible/meaningful to distinguish between 'the neuter instrumental form of the demonstrative pronoun' and 'the neuter instrumental form of the relative pronoun'? (more on that later once i've read more maybe.) so like. more investigation required.
also like. something jespersen 1933 made clear to me that i'd never quite realized before is that actually this 'the more X, the more Y' construction can be reordered, it's just that it requires you to restructure the clauses? so that eg 'the more i read, the less i understand' is functionally the same as 'i understand less the more i read,' but it's had to become SVA-ASV, instead of the more familiar ASV-ASV. anyway this is fucking wild to me. ALSO it feels like the disappearance of the second the necessitated by this reorganization (like, it's not *i understand the less the more i read) says something about how the parts are functioning, although don't ask me what yet. probably related to like. whether you have two mutually dependent clauses, grammatically speaking ('the more i read' and 'the less i understand'), or a more-usual combination of dependent ('the more i read') and independent ('i understand less,' although i concede the freestanding comparative may not quite strike you as being fully successfully independent, given the degree to which it begs a 'than what?').

I can not stress enough that the scene where Percy sends Medusas head to the gods is literally what made me fall in love with Percy as a character bc think about it hes just started his first quest, he's in more danger then he's ever been in his whole life, knowing almost every monster and God is currently out to get him personally, and the most important person in his life has been kidnapped by the god of the dead - so what does he do? He chooses to actively makes the situation worse by sending a middle finger right to the gods bc yeah fuck the gods
