Some people are now shocked that someone like Călin Georgescu managed to secure first place in the initial round of the presidential elections. I’m not entirely surprised, though. We live in a country where, on YouTube’s Romania Top 100 songs, 99% are manele—songs that mostly glorify money—sung by men who look worse than gorillas. And most of these songs are local, not foreign. This tells me that anti-globalism already has deep roots here. Why bother learning English or any other language? Why bother learning about other cultures? Why bother doing any of this when "Made in Romania" is seen as the best? But is it, though?

A few years ago, I finally heard a BTS song on the radio. For Romanian ARMYs, you know how rare this is—back then, even rarer. I was thrilled—until the radio host started talking trash about them. They were “too perfect,” their skin was “too flawless,” they “looked like girls.”

We live in a country where if a man showers more than two or three times a week, uses skincare, or simply cares about his appearance, he’s ridiculed as being “girly” or even called “gay”—which, by the way, is still used as an insult here, or at least it was when I was in school. BTS is dismissed as being “too girly” by Romanian standards, but the same men who “sing” about having multiple women and flaunt oversized bellies spilling out of their clothes are somehow role models?

Why, then, is it surprising that someone like Călin Georgescu has become so popular that he stands a real chance of becoming president? How did we get here? What happened? I used to think there was no one worse than Trump, but I was so, so wrong.

Călin Georgescu literally claimed—out loud—that he is not only skeptical but certain that humanity never landed on the moon, that H2O is not actually H2O, and that water in its “natural, pure” form contains information. He supports both General Antonescu and Putin—two figures who are ideological opposites. He champions both the Orthodox Church and mysticism—again, two completely contradictory things. And then there’s his belief that giving birth via cesarean is harmful to women.

How did we get here? I’m angry, sad, disappointed, and worried. Where are we headed?

P.S. As soon as I woke up this morning, my mom told me that from now on, I need to learn to keep my mouth shut and not talk about politics to almost anyone. Are we going back to a dictatorship? It feels like I woke up in a parallel world. Still, while I still can, I won’t be silent.

Salut, y a-t-il des membres de la diaspora roumaine du Québec ici? Je n'arrive pas à croire qu'après le premier tour des élections présidentielles en Roumanie s'est qualifié un homme russophile, ami de Douguine, qui pense que Poutine est un grand leader et qui nie la guerre en Ukraine. Sans oublier ses autres affirmations délirantes: qu'il y a des nanochips dans le Pepsi, que l'Homme n'a jamais marché sur la Lune, que la chimiothérapie tue les gens, que la césarienne coupe le lien divin entre la mère et l'enfant, que la langue roumaine précède le latin, qu'une femme est incapable d'être présidente, que la COVID-19 et les changements climatiques n'existent pas, etc. Euh... c'est quelqu'un avec des idées aussi caves et arriérées qui est censé nous représenter? Franchement, ça n'a aucun bon sens. Ne faisons pas la même erreur que les USA: nous, les roumains, on est plus intelligents que ça et on ne veut pas retourner dans le passé. Si l’on souhaite aller de l'avant, c'est avec Lasconi qu'on y parviendra car elle est pro-UE et pro-NATO, pas avec un poutiniste d'extrême droite qui a fait sensation sur TikTok grâce à des bots. Faque grouillons-nous le cul et rendons-nous aux bureaux de vote cette fin de semaine pour les élections parlementaires et la fin de semaine prochaine pour le second tour des élections présidentielles. Il y a des bureaux de vote à Montréal et à Québec: il suffit d'être là et de présenter une pièce d'identité valide. Vous avez intérêt à voter, sinon vous n'aurez pas d'excuses quand vous vous plaindrez de ne plus pouvoir passer vos vacances en Roumanie et voir votre famille à cause des russes. Votez parce que c'est le seul moyen d'empêcher le fascisme de gagner l'Europe et le totalitarisme d'autrefois de s'emparer de notre pays qu'on aime (vous savez de quoi je parle!). N'oubliez pas les raisons pour lesquelles, en immigrant, nous avons choisi l'Occident. Les moldaves ont fait le bon choix de voter « oui » au référendum pour intégrer l’Union Européenne qui a eu lieu récemment, mais la course a été très serrée. Chaque vote est important pour détrôner l'ingérence russe: acum ori niciodată, votons, si nous voulons garder cette chance à l'avenir!

Let's assume our pro-Russian friend is right, and that he had no help from Russia and did this all on his own. If he's right, then surely this means nothing and he'll just win all over again. And for those rolling their eyes at this, remember how much closer Romania is to Russia and just how much weaker and poorer its government is than America's. Thanks to Ceaucescu's unique brand of communism, Romania is the poorest country in the EU. We're not talking about $100,000 of facebook memes in an election with $100,000,000 campaign budgets here. Assuming the whole world is like America is the left's shtick-let's not make things worse by adding ourselves to the list of morons who can't perceive anything out side of an America-centric lens.
