if you want to better yourself here are some tips and tricks from me

number 1. learn, sink in to your knowledge! learn languages learn things. learn history. be smart, you don’t have to be the smartest person in the world. it’s good to be aware of the world. knowledge is a great skill and quality to have.

number 2. have a healthy life style. this will help in the long run. with so many diseases and many other things in this world you can do so much too prevent it! you don’t have to do crazy diets if you don’t like to. i personally fast and still eat the stuff id like, but in moderation . you can exercise and still eat whatever you want! that’s what helps with me

number 3. focus on you. don’t focus on others, make yourself the priority. others will come later. dress for yourself do not dress for others. that shows lack of confidence because you care so much about how others think of you when you do that. wear what’d you like, change your hair, do anything that’s in your hearts desire.

number 4. remember mental health plays a significant role in your life. meditate, write in a journal, do shadow work or even watch videos on self help. you can find shadow work on pinterest. alessia (persephonesblood) has a shadow book on amazon if your interested.

number 5. this is your life, your movie. don’t let yourself be a side character of your life. don’t listen to people with their negative energy reflecting themselves onto you. where is that even going to get them? they talk about you because no one cares when they talk about themself because it’s so boring. not everyone is going to like you and that’s okay. their opinion is invalid.

number 6. stop living in the past. where is the past? gone, you have no control of it. so let go of it. it’s going to get you absolutely no where. be in the present think of your future. vision your future, plan on your future. do what you think is going to have your future self thank you.

Life in China Observations #4

It's been a while since I last did this, so let's go again!

Identity is complicated The question "where are you from" can be just as complicated as it is simple. For many people, their country of birth is where they're from, which is usually the case here. However, if you happen to be born in country A to parents from cultures B and C, immigrated and became a citizen of country D and now attend university in country E and are now on an exchange program in China, the question "where are you from" is not that easily answered. From what some of my friends told me, where you're from is actually the place where your dad was born in even though you may have been born in a different city which is a pretty interesting concept known as the "ancestral home" - 祖籍 (zǔjí) or 籍贯 (jígùan).

You have to make the first step I may have mentioned this in a previous post, but people are constantly doing something and unless you specifically and intentionally reach out and work on your friendship, you may end up drifting apart. Maybe this is a specific thing, but back home I could go a few weeks without really reaching out to my friends and then someone would suggest grabbing lunch together and it would be like no time had passed at all since we last saw each other. Here? Quite different.

Beauty and pop trends There are all sorts of weird and wonderful trends that you can come across in China. From using bread as a study tactic to decorating your workplace with banana plants, I feel like the more I assimilate here, the bigger the reverse culture shock will be when I go back home, and not just for me. dr.candiselin covers some of these trends on Instagram (not a promo post!), and I recommend checking out her content, it's quite brilliant.

Taobao You can buy anything on taobao. Literally. I saw someone selling a house there. I was previously a little shocked to see animals such as cats and bunnies being sold, but after seeing houses and cars being sold I honestly don't know what else is there to surprise me with.

Prepare in advance (foodwise) for the lunar new year During those 8-12ish days during the holdiays a lot of stores were closed. The convenience store outside my campus was open thank God, because otherwise I would have been living on instant porridge and instant soup which was my main food source 2 weeks prior due to being ill and there is only so much instant oatmeal that you can eat before slightly losing it.

Being ill is a nightmare And I mean the mandatory-bed-rest-no-going-out-for-at-least-5-days ill kind. You need to go to the hospital or a clinic to get a note to give to your school otherwise the day's you're absent will be counted, and once they reach a specific percentage you won't be allowed to take the exam (which can seriously mess with your grades, even more if you're there as an exchange student).

The weather can change at the blink of an eye I remember back in December the weather was in the negative digits and then suddenly the next day it was around 20 celcius?? The very next day it went to 3-4, and even now in March it's very all over the place. The weather forecast is not that useful because I'll leave the dorms wearing my coat in the morning only to return carrying my coat, jumper, long-sleeved shirt and wearing only my t-shirt.

More affordable beauty products I saw some products go for around $80 online?? And here on Taobao they cost under $10? I'm assuming it's the shipping costs that drive up the price so drastically, and now I'm pondering whether it would be cheaper to order online or to travel to China every couple of years just to stock up on beauty products.

On Warmth

A little exploration into the world of instant gratification, and you will find something rather striking.

The living in 'extremes'.

The world today thinks in binaries (unfortunately). It's either absolute ignorance or undiluted visionaries of the last stage. It's either too hot or too cold, am I right?

We live in between these polarities. Care to explore the route in between? Stop and watch the sunset, Sniff the fresh summer's morning, stand a while to pet the cat on the sidewalk, lift the hunched shoulders and watch those two strangers dramatically talk to each other.

Oh, to be able to smile at your neighbours and nod a hello, to share lunchboxes at recess with your pals, to bite into a ripe apple and hear the luxurious crunch.

No, I prefer to notice the carefully picked scent on your clothes and the appreciation in your voice in conversations.

I prefer to note the warmth of your palms in mine. The tiny knocks on my desk that remind me to drink water, all the gestures of warmth. And, no, it's not sparks flying, it's not hot, there's no 'heat'.

But the warmth, we so easily dismiss is read between the polarities and speaks in gigantic waves.

Find warmth, my dears. It is quite misplaced and ignored. No amount of ignorance and sparks can replace it. Rest assured, warmth cannot be spoken. It can only be felt.

Hey guys, hope you're all having a nice summer. I'm on vacation for the rest of August, but I've started studying for the September exams.

I'm catching up on studying for linguistics classes and have begun working on a research paper these days. Anyway, I'm still trying to relax, even though relaxing means sipping on cold coffee in a bikini while simultaneously trying to find the inner meaning of the depths of my Excel notes.

For those of you who will be spending the remainder of the summer studying or working, I wish you good luck and patience, dear, patience.

one of my least favorite things a work of fiction that has different species or whatever than humans can do is making that species like, homogeneous. it really pisses me off when its like "all elves are beautiful and tall and skinny and speak the same language or only like max 3 languages". so in every species i create i make minimum 10 different ethnicities and at the very least the barebones of unique languages for each ethnicity (of course some are related blah blah blah). and also i wish ppl took advantage of genetic drifting... omg island gigantism is so fun. there's also island dwarfism like those teensy tiny sicilian/maltese elephants. u have so many options. obviously it can be annoying to make so much variation but thats also just how living beings are...
