Resin printing CAN be cheap, as cheap as using DAS clay for prototyping instead of Ladoll or Epoxi clay. However, a good printer (+499$) good, durable resin not brittle shit stuff (+60$ per liter) curing station (+80 DIY/300$from company) plus protective equipment (+120-400$) plus sandpaper, and other consumables for finishing the print (30/60$)... they all add up. That's not even considering the cost of Primer and filler clay for prototypes. People think I'm making money out of this. Yes I do, but cost of the doll barely covers the prototypes/ finishing/casting/shipping materials/ taxes.... I make like 20$ per doll and that doesn't even cover the hundreds of hours invested in working. I really help and welcome everyone into the hobby, but dollmaking is not for the money greed..... It's my job and I barely make it for food through winter...

Just wanted to pop in and say how much I absolutely love your Youtube channel! I just started watching a few months ago and it's been really inspiring. I also want to let you know (if you haven't tried it yet) that Sculpey has an air dry clay that I personally like better than DAS clay but it is around the same price point. There is two versions with basically the same packaging, one being the air dry modeling clay and the other the premium air dry clay. The premium is a bit better but I do like both! I'm enjoying following your doll making journey. I can't wait for your anthro takara pony to become a reality.
Thank you for watching!
I didn't actually realize sculpey had air dry clay! Somehow I've just never seen that on store shelves I guess, or maybe I just overlooked it because of the brand name.
And at my local craft store it does look like it's cheaper than premier, which is what I usually use! Same price as DAS. It looks like sculpey is a bit denser than premier based on the weight (I assume the volume is similar?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'll have to check it out, thank you for letting me know!
full disclosure, I *do* have some unopened ladoll premier waiting in the wings, hence why im trying to get through my current batch, but obviously I'll be needing clay again sometime after that too.

I'm working on a lot of things and I'm nervous about sharing what I do because it is such a shift in tone. the thing that makes me feel better (but bad in a different way) is that I was never really serious about posting my art exclusively in the first place, so my blog isn't really going from all digital art to suddenly my sculpting work as well, it's going from nonsense to more nonsense.
I want to do this, though, so I hope some of you like seeing it. I'm going to persevere!

Currently on my desk :)
Anyone who was on Doll Rendezvous in Paris could have seen me live sculpting the little one on the left. I tend to call her a ‘she’, but I think I’ll make her genderless... She is 12cm tall. I still need to work on her tiny head, her eyes aren’t completely even and her upper eyelids are not even remotely similar >>”
Leafy got cut up and now has her stringing channels. I’m kinda hesitant to work on her joints, even though they’re super simple  (since she doesn’t need lots of movement), but I’ll bit the bullet in the next days and just DO it. And the locking points for her leaves. And sanding her, and priming, and sanding again- x.x

I just preordered a Rumpeldoll Abby and I've been inspired to start sculpting again! The full doll is my very first sculpt, Sasha and as much as I love her for what she is she has so much to improve on.
I'm excited to see how this new one goes! I'm mostly making all new pieces but resusing and improving some others.

To my young (Not in age but in sculpting) bjd sculptors:
A few tips where more people will see it, (If that’s okay Mod)
1. Please play with your mediums! Sculpt statues, charms, look up hacks on using it, play with it! Carve, draw, sand, and paint on it!
You’ll get frustrated if you jump straight to sculpting a doll with a new medium, only to find out hours, or days, or longer in the process that you don’t like how it finishes, or it breaks to easily, or it’s impossible to get fine detail. (IE, normal LaDoll wasn’t for me it was too light and cracked for 1/6 dolls, but I adore Premier from LaDoll)
2. Blueprints are more important than you think! Going with the flow is fine and fun, but it’s easy to keep everything symmetrical when you have a profile and side view of what you want the finished product to look like.
3. Let’s talk armature! Tin foil is fine and great for large pieces that need to be hollow. If you’re sculpting a smaller doll, I recommend reusing bamboo skewers and straws, so you can prevent having to drill all the way through the piece. (Just stab them though a noodle of clay for a base). Straws and bamboo skewers can be wiggled out (And I encourage you to reuse them!) However, tin foil needs usually to be pulled out piece by piece through a moderately large hole. Doing this for a two piece torso is fairly easy, since you’ll have an easier time sculpting it as one piece, and cutting across the bust with a jewelers saw to pull out the foil. For a one piece torso, I either pull it out through the hip, or saw it in half anyways before sculpting it back together, (It’s easier to clean up the insides).
4. It’s fine to fail! If I had a dollar for every project doll I had, I’d have at least, maybe 20$, not including all the heads and random torso pieces.
5. Joints are hard to engineer. They may take time for you to understand, but one day, it will click for you! My best advice is investing in some cheap wooden balls or a sphere mold with many sizes. You can press the wooden ball into the clay and use a similar sized sphere mold to make a well fitted basic joint.
6. Tools! Invest in sanding sponges and a electric nail file, it’s so much easier on your wrists than sanding with sand paper. Also you’ll want dotting tools, and picks, as well as silicon tipped tools for shaping. Also exacto knives. These things can usually be bought in a fairly cheap kit. As far as elastic goes, just look for high quality and maybe get a MM larger than you need.
Some general things, “real” Primers are toxic no matter the brand, please wear the proper protection.
Wear a cloth mask when sanding any type of clay, airborne particles won’t kill you but over long periods of exposure, they are bad for you.
Always mark sides on your dolls. Left and Right. It makes things so much easier.
Don’t be afraid to mix your mediums, I use apoxie sculpt on top of LaDoll Premier for small, thin, or fine things.
Have a doll container for all your parts! Your doll obviously won’t be strung most of the time, and it’s important to keep all the parts in one place, lest you lose a part you worked so hard on!
Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Most sculptors are more than happy to answer! But remember, our skill comes from experience, not from a magic medium or tools, (Though a medium you like, with tools you like, is important.)
Start where ever you want! I normally work on heads first, because they’re my favorite. A lot of the process is a constant back and forth between parts.
And that’s all I have! I’m not too entirely active on Insta or Tumblr, but if you have questions, I’m L3ddyKatt on insta! Take all this with a grain of salt, I’ve only been sculpting for a few years.

I got a couple questions! Where did you learn to make bjds from? I've only seen your most recent work and they're so refined and beautiful! Also, what material are you using to sculpt w and what material will the finals be in? (I work in ceramics and have been considering doing porcelain)
ahh thank u for asking!! the doll i’m working on now is actually one of my first - although i tried once back when i was only 14, haha. i am completely self-taught! i’m sculpting in ladoll clay (it’s somewhere between stone clay and paperclay that is light and fairly sturdy) and i’m going to cast them in urethane resin eventually. ladoll makes a good base for slipcast porcelain dolls too!

Fixing my Vsevolod sculpt, I left him too long partially unbaked, and he lost two feet, a leg, got decapitated and lost a couple fingers. So I glued those back on, and currently, I'm encasing him with la doll clay so I can further encase him in a varnish. #sarayoungart #craft #art #scupture #sculpey #ladoll #fixingoldart #characterart #scupt #clay #mixedmedia #learnfrommymistakes #albertacraft https://www.instagram.com/p/CFFVPgehZFt/?igshid=1mf1ncl7e1mgw
