My Ornament and Crime submission! In just in time! Finished piece, WIPs, and initial sketch. and here she is! I finished her stringing on Friday, which was not as hard as I thought it would be. She is fully posable. I feel so accomplished when I look at her! I am thinking that I will keep her as she is since she is the first doll and I want to appreciate her in that way.

I am going to start another doll this week, maybe have two going on at once so I have something to work on while the other is drying. I also want to make a doll specifically to make plaster casts out of so that when I get back to work in August I can make porcelain dolls. I love this paper clay a lot but the porcelain is smooth and I like that bright white finish, which I can only get with this paper clay if I spray it with primer and that covers up small details. 

I officially start summer break on Wednesday and my son is going to his cousins house for a week, I am going to have a lot of time coming up!

In the meantime, I am celebrating this wonderful little lady!

New doll in progress, let’s hope this one doesn’t take 6 weeks!

I have been working on my first Ball Joined Doll for 6 weeks now, there was a period where I was working on her every single day for at least 1-2 hours at a time, but that kind of burned me out, so I took a break and only worked on her every few days.

I find that I often begin to hate my work after I spend a long periods of time with it. Maybe it is because it isn’t exactly how I pictured it to be or I am noticing all of the flaws. In any case, I find that taking a break from it seems to help. I am able to take a step back and appreciate it after not looking at it for a few days and that’s exactly what happened with this doll. 

I am learning how to make this doll through a course on Teachable.com (link below) and my instructor, Adele, has created a wonderful Facebook group for her students to share questions, their progress, and connect. I really love the group and it is so cool to be able to see how others are progressing but sometimes I look at their work, or even just viewing Adele’s example, and compare myself. Their anatomy looks better than mine, their doll looks better, it seems to be easier for them, why is it taking me 6 weeks? I know it is unhealthy to do this but how can I not? I think a lot of artists struggle with this, and probably many people do in any interest in they have, it is human nature.

I am proud of the progress I have made though, I honestly didn’t realize how far I have come as an artist and my abilities. I was definitely not able to sculpt anatomy like I am now just a year ago. Doing this doll gave me the confidence to sculpt The Baba Yaga in my previous post and begin working on other projects. I currently have 3 projects going on at once, working on them throughout the day as I wait for other things to dry. 

The doll is going to be pieced together today after I spray each part with Primer. I am excited to see her articulated! Stay tuned for my next post on her.
