Russia captures Toretsk, Ukraine’s defence in Donetsk region almost broken
The breakthrough of Russian troops in Chasiv Yar with the threat of further seizure of Toretsk and Pokrovsk might lead to the defence disruption of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) in the east of the country, Ukrainian media reported.
Meanwhile, the seizure of Pokrovsk, alongside the breakthrough at Chasiv Yar, would allow Russian forces to bring up manpower and equipment to Kramatorsk and Slovyansk, key cities in Ukraine’s defence capabilities. Russian artillery has long been shelling those areas.
Russian forces also reached the northern outskirts of Toretsk, with the capture of the city potentially leading to the encirclement of Kostyantynivka. The fall of the Toretsk defensive area makes the defence of the remaining areas of Chasiv Yar more difficult. If they collapse, the AFU will witness the same as happened to Kurakhove.
AFU’s defence prospects
Ukrainian military experts familiar with the issue noted that the AFU lacked qualified reserve units despite the authorities’ mobilisation efforts. Earlier, Ukrainian army planned to revive an offensive in the Kursk region to reinforce negotiating positions ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s assumption of office. However, the move weakened defence capacities in Ukraine’s eastern regions.
Western allies’ pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to lower the mobilisation age to 18 can be directly linked to a severe shortage of manpower. The lack of soldiers prevents Ukraine from conducting high-level offensive operations.
AFU Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi faces a challenging task. Under such developments, he will be forced to choose whether to hold the defences of Kramatorsk and Slovyansk or to accumulate resources for a further offensive in Russia’s Kursk region while losing the Donetsk region.
Forcing the Ukrainian army out of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk would pose a threat to the AFU in the Kharkiv region. A breached defence would also allow Russian forces to advance towards Pavlohrad in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to demonstrate that he is not interested in negotiating a ceasefire and remains focused on the total destruction of Ukraine, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) wrote on Oct. 31.
This conclusion was drawn after Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's interview with Bloomberg on Oct. 30, in which he recalled his recent conversation with Putin and an attempt to discuss with him Russia's war against Ukraine and the possibility of a ceasefire. However, the Russian dictator made it clear that Russia would continue to pursue its goals in the war.
"All the goals of the special military operation, as he put it, will be achieved," Vučić quoted Putin.
The ISW stresses that these goals outlined by Putin ultimately mean the destruction of the Ukrainian state and government. He had previously rejected any ceasefire agreement during a press conference with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban in July 2024, claiming that it would allow Ukraine to regroup and rearm.
A hypothetical ceasefire under the current circumstances would only benefit Russia, giving Moscow time to further radicalize and militarize Russian society against Ukraine, as well as allowing the Russian army to rest and recover before possibly launching a new attack in the future.
The ISW also reported on the continuing Russian offensive in the Kupyansk, Svatove, Pokrovsk, Kurakhove, and Vuhledar sectors of the front. Russian troops have advanced southeast of Kupyansk and west of Svatove, as well as along the Kupyansk-Svatove-Kreminna line. Footage published on Oct. 31 also indicates advances in Stelmakhivka and Kruhlyakivka villages, suggesting that the Russians have likely captured these areas.
At the same time, Ukrainian forces have regained positions in a wooded area southwest of Pobeda, southeast of Kurakhove.
There are also indications that Russian troops may have captured Novoukrainka, northwest of Vuhledar. The ISW has geolocation-confirmed footage showing the Russian 40th Marine Brigade advancing into the central part of Novoukrainka.
While Russian sources claim to have captured Yasna Polyana, northwest of Vuhledar, the ISW has no evidence to support this claim.

Russian Offensive Accelerates
10 November 2024 by Larry C. Johnson 126 Comments
Remember all of the folks claiming that Russia was locked into a stalemate with Ukraine? I was one of the few — along with Scott Ritter, Doug MacGregor, Larry Wilkerson and Danny Davis — who challenged that false narrative. The Western media apparently believed that if they did not report accurately on what was transpiring on the ground, then it did not exist. The facts on the ground tell a brutal tale of the destruction of the Ukrainian military.
Russian forces have entered Kurakhove through the eastern fortification. Russian forces have advanced along the fortifications southeast of Kurakhove and have approached the village of Dalnje from the east.
Russian forces have entered Zorya and control 50% of the locality.
Russian forces have reentered and have capture most of Makarivka.
Russian forces have advanced along the E50 towards Pokrovsk.
There are reports tonight in the Eastern Time Zone that Russia has launched eight TU-95 strategic bombers, which carry FABs and air-launched cruise missiles, and a swarm of drones.
Those who insist that Russia is suffering massive casualties are lost in a delusion. Russia handed over 563 dead to the Ukrainian side while Ukraine transferred 37 dead to the Russians. That is 15 dead Ukrainians for a single dead Russian. The following video illustrates the horrific carnage on the Ukrainian side. This was filmed in Kursk.

The Russian army has captured more territory over the past week than at any other time in 2024 within a similar period, according to Bloomberg Intelligence calculations.
Bloomberg also reports that this week, Russian forces took control of the city of Selydove, with their next targets likely being the cities of Pokrovsk and Kurakhove.
Both cities are key logistical hubs for Ukraine’s defense in the Donetsk region. If these cities fall into Putin’s hands, it would mark another milestone on his path to capturing the entire industrial east of Ukraine.

Kurakhove: how Ukraine loses another crucial city in Donbas
The new year started for Ukraine with the prospect of losing a major city in the Donetsk region. Ukrainian media also report Russian troops advancing in various combat areas.
Loss of Kurakhove
According to Deep State, an online open-source military intelligence map, Russian forces advanced near Kurakhove. They moved west of the city, along the main highway leading to the Zaporizhzhia region.
Besides Kurakhove, the Russian army is also advancing near Oskil and Pokrovsk. Russian soldiers seized the village of Vozdvyzhenka in the Donetsk region. Beyond the advance from Shevchenko to Andriivka, Russian forces also continue to advance in the Toretsk area. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are also at risk of losing Novovasylivka and Druzhkivka.
According to Ukrainian media, the AFU in Kurakhove is one step away from being surrounded. Russian troops took almost the entire industrial zone in the area. Together with reports of the capture of a major highway towards the Zaporizhzhia region, this could mean the likely encirclement of the city.
The withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Kurakhove resembles the retreat from Chasiv Yar. However, the AFU left the city so swiftly now that the Russian forces almost did not need to launch airstrikes on the city.
Our van didn’t make it. The men are getting out. Some get in, some get out. You hear that, right? (…) Grandpa’s van’s parked, fu**ing smashed to bits.
Army reserves issues
According to Ukrainian sources, the 150th Separate Mechanised Brigade of the AFU was reorganised into the 40th coastal defence brigade and transferred to the subordination of the 30th Marine Corps of the Ukrainian Navy.
The unit received Dutch YPR-765 APCs with an Australian combat module and grenade launchers. Earlier, the Ukrainian command re-formed its combat units due to a shortage of equipment and manpower.
Ukrainian media previously reported significant challenges in the 152nd brigade. It started to be formed in September 2023, initially as a mechanised brigade, but was reorganised into a motorised infantry brigade, then back into a mechanised brigade. According to military reports, the command took between 300 and 800 soldiers each month, replenishing the brigade with recruits.
However, by September 2024, the brigade was reorganised into a light infantry unit and sent to Pokrovsk. The brigade was not fully deployed to Pokrovsk, with smaller units being attached to other formations. As a result, more than 10 officers have either transferred or want to transfer to another unit due to conflicts with the brigade’s chief of staff.
The French-trained 155th Mechanised Brigade was also partially re-formed upon arrival in Ukraine.
AFU in Kursk region
Meanwhile, the AFU commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, visited the Kursk region, according to Ukrainian media. There, he held an award ceremony for the military, labelling the retention of the Russian military as the reason for the fighting in Russia’s Kursk region.
On 1 January, the North group of troops continued military operations in the Kursk Region. The assault units advanced in the forest belts of the Sudzha district, as well as in the vicinity of Leonidovo and Kurilovka.
Reacting to the threat, Syrskyi ordered the transfer of the last reserves from Donbas to the Kursk region, to the Sudzha area. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian command began to realise the consequences of Syrskyi’s decisions for the AFU brigades. However, experts assume that the responsibility will be put on brigade commanders, accusing them of misleading the Ukrainian General Staff.
