Dark Days - Kujou Sara x Male!Reader
CW: Violence, reader death.
Tumblr media
Sara still couldn't believe the change in her life. She always pictured herself (and was viewed as) stoic, unmoving, emotionless - a perfect subject of the Shogun, dedicated and committed to the cause. Rejecting all distractions - both petty and grand. After all, she decided to follow a path of absolute devotion to Eternity, in the face of which all mortal matters are infinitely small.
But love strikes without warning. It was just a few careful glances at first, but in a matter of a few years love bloomed between you and her into something more permanent, and you placed the ring on her finger on that fateful day. You shook her world, her views and her life to the core. Every night with you by her side, every gentle touch, every gentle kiss left her ascetic ideas dazed and reeling, until her perception of duty changed drastically. Sara understood that loyalty to the Shogunate is not as two-dimensional as she imagined it.
There is nothing to be gained from limiting herself so radically in the long run. More - love reinforces her resolve, pushing her to work twice as hard towards the safety of Inazuma, the safety of you. When she can drop her guard down and indulge herself with the love you shower her with daily, all doubts and fears are eradicated, letting her focus once again. A pillar to rely on provides her a safe, stable base to build her sense of comfort and security on.
Sara understood that she can serve in a different way too. She can defend Inazuma with every second of her life, every bit of strength, but hers or your life isn't eternal. The youth needs to take your place when the time comes - someone intelligent, sharp and full of energy. With the brains and talents you have, there is no doubt that your heir will be worthy of serving Inazuma, whichever area they will choose. Except for destroying as a general, Sara thinks that, as a woman, her duty is to build. Build a family that will serve the state and the Shogun beyond her lifespan, a bloodline that will be the pride of the country, and a shining example for others in terms of courage and merit of its members.
Even if she approaches her life mostly with stoic resolve, this thought never fails to rouse excitement in her. “Kujou” is a name of the past now. Finally she can build something for herself, something just yours and hers. A safe place to withdraw to, and a fire to stoke her resolve. It has been a few months since you started trying for a child, but Sara is patient. Her eagerness, though, is hard to contain. She has dreamed so long of this - to carry her child within herself, and then in her own arms. To see them smile, to make them laugh, to teach and to guide. To be the parent she herself never had.
But then the war came.
The Vision Hunt Decree came as a huge surprise for you two. Despite working in the second highest ring of authority, no drafts or warnings of this ever reached you. Still, Sara accepted it. If this is the wish of the Archon, then who is she, a foolish mortal, to disagree?
Quickly this controversial order turned into a civil war when Watatsumi Island refused to hand out their Visions. Sara understood this decision, yet it was her duty to enforce it. She trusted the Shogun with her life. After rallying the armies of the Tenryu Commission, she led them south through the island chain, and forward onto Watatsumi Island.
Unfortunately, with you by her side.
According to the law, every family under the jurisdiction of the Shogunate was to send out one male of fighting age to join the army. With no small effort, Sara was able to delay your draft. But a few weeks into the war proved that Watatsumi was not willing to back down; their resistance was fierce, and losses kept mounting. She could no longer bend her authority to shield you without risk of drawing attention. Doing what she could, Sara got you to fight in her regiment as an officer - the small glimmer of hope was that you were of noble blood, and thus could be granted the privilege of a commanding position and the personal protection that was provided by it.
Still, it brought no peace of mind to her. She knew what the reality was.
—
“Stay in formation!” You shout, looking at the battlefield through the small slit between your helmet and your broad shield. Three hundred paces away stands the enemy, with deadly spears and sturdy shields in hand.
They look almost identical to your men. Only the colors are different.
Though cold winds and biting rain falls upon you, you're sweating. You had to march, almost run to face the assault banner the enemy had fielded this morning. Stress builds up in your body as you move forward, your men following in your footsteps. There's one man on your left, one on your right, and one behind you - carrying the unit’s standard.
You steady your breath. Although the enemy is in clear view, you find comfort in the company of your subordinates. They have both the same fear and the same motivation. None of you want to die. For every one of them there's someone waiting back home, praying to the Sacred Sakura their husbands, fathers, brothers and lovers and friends return safely. But not for you. Your wife is here with you - standing safely behind two rows of infantry, keeping a careful watch over how the fighting will proceed. She will be fine and you know it. She's intelligent and capable in combat. She's strong.
Although officially you are to fight for the Shogunate, your motivation lies somewhere else. You are here to keep Sara safe by ensuring the line never breaks. At least not your regiment.
“Advance!” The commander of the unit behind you shouts, passing on Sara’s order. With all your might, you repeat the command.
“Advance!”
The slow step turns into a jog. The air is filled with the sounds of the many armors’ metallic clicking. Your heart speeds up when you spot a flock of thin, black lines in the sky.
You scream. “Arrows!”
Several other warnings resonate thought-out the ranks. You raise your shield in unison with your men, and lean forward to ensure your torso and legs are safe. The missiles fall harmlessly on your shield, but a few slide off of your back. Many land in front of you, impaled into the sands of Nazuchi Beach.
Just a few more moments and you'll be out of range. You speed up, and your men follow suit.
Unbeknownst to you, a single, Geo-infused arrow was high in the air, just a few seconds from impact.
Without warning, it hits the shield right above your forearm.
Without much trouble, the weighted shot passes through the wood as if it was one of the paper walls back home.
It punches through your armor and caves in your chest, knocking out all the air from your lungs, just as her kisses always did.
You stumble and spit blood from your butchered lungs. Your head spins and you fall back onto the sand, your spear falling from your grasp.
Your vision fades - not much is left of your heart, the one she valued so dearly.
Your body spasms and gargles for a moment, your warm, red blood staining the pale sand below you.
Two sets of arms grab your body, and drag it back behind the lines.
—
Your body, and the information of your passing, were withheld from Sara until the battle was over - by command of her lieutenant. Only when the dust settled and the broken forces of Watatsumi Island retreated was this news handed to her.
“What?” She says, her voice quite unsure. “Are you certain it's him? The vanguard is still cleaning up the remains of the resistance. This must be some sort of a misunderstanding?”
Her officers shift uneasily, and exchange anxious glances between each other. Sara stiffens, her expression turning stone cold.
Silence falls in the room. Sara blinks a few times, the thought rolling around in her mind. She nods once. Twice.
She lifts her hand to her mouth in an attempt to cover her trembling lips. Quickly, warm tears start making their way down her smooth features. She tries to rub them away with her hand, but fails to do so. She stifles a sob.
“Out.”
This single word is enough to make the men turn and leave as quick as they can. Sara just stands in place, looking around the tent with tears flowing from her golden eyes. Like a lost girl.
Lost. That's what she is. Lost.
She can't-
She stumbles to the nearest chair on trembling legs and plops down on it. Sara leans in. Her hands cover her face.
Words flood her mind. Single thoughts. That's all her mind is capable of.
Y/N.
You.
Husband.
Family.
Children.
Safety.
Comfort.
Happiness.
Love.
Life.
Her vision blurs, black spots dancing before her eyes. Her legs feel weak. Her arms feel weak. Her body, her entire being is weak.
Gone.
Trampled.
War.
She takes a shaky breath. Her hands, still bearing the golden ring you placed on her finger, climb up to her scalp. Her nails dig into her scalp, fingers grabbing and pulling at her hair in whatever spots they can reach. She's shuddering. Sara screams soundlessly, pulling out her own hair in helplessness.
Hell.

I like to imagine that all playable characters in genshin are at least aware of eachother.
I don't care that they've never interacted in canon! I think it's really fun to make up an elaborate story linking two completely unrelated characters, and I think we should all do it.
Here are some off the top of my head:
Rosaria and Ningguang - Rosaria was going about her business, crossed the Liyue boarder accidentally and beat up a bunch of treasure hoarder ass. The Qixing has eyes everywhere, Ningguang calls her to the jade chamber, not to scold her though, but rather to express great interest in future dealings. They now have tea whenever Rosaria feels like strolling to Liyue again.
Kaeya and Itto - penpals. Kaeya sent a letter addressed to Diluc during his 4 year rampage, it got entirely misdelivered ended up in Inazuma. Itto found it and decided to open it to see who it was from and if it was important enough to try to get delivered. Wrote Kaeya a letter back, saying something like "wassup bud, just letting yk your bros letter didn't make it to him. The 1 and Oni Arataki Itto (das me) found it, opened it up 2 tell you I did :D Love, Itto, coolest oni you'll meet AND the boss and founder of the famous Arataki Gang (named after me) ps. Congrats on the promo to calvary captin... I definitely know what that is and it sounds cool but not as cool as the gang. Lmk if you want to join :)" And Kaeya wrote back, because why not. Now he's got contacts in Inazuma too and is an honorary member of the gang repping it in Mond.
Collei and Sara - Tighnari had business in Inazuma, took Collei with him as her carer and superior. While he was doing his thing, Collei got lost and walked up to the nearest authority figure who just so happened to be Kujo Sara. She helped Collei get to where she needed to be. It's a one time encounter.
I am getting carried away because they're honestly really fun. I can understand why people have rare pairs and shit, even though all of these are meant purely platonically.

DO ELECTRO VISION HOLDERS DESERVE THEIR VISION?
WHAT IS ELECTRO?
Electro in Genshin is associated with [checks notes] ...eternity...
This could come from the law of conservation of energy, which states that "energy can't be created nor destroyed", only accumulated or dispersed.
Electricity is [bear with me] a form of energy [isn't science amazing?]
Keep in mind, I'm not too sure about this interpretation, feel free to discuss in the comments.
Electricity is associated with speed, power, danger, and unpredictability [lightning never strikes the same place twice].
It could also be associated with...knowledge, with lightning "suddenly illuminating knowledge and destroying ignorance ". Also, I think you need to be smart when controlling something like electricity.
So you got to be smart.
Electricity is also a tool that we use in our day to day life, like fire.
LISA
The OG electro mommy, she is definitely powerful and smart. The vision is a tool to help her understand the elements and its a fitting element for that purpose since it has various reactions with every element.
FISCHL
She is also smart, granted, she's not known for that in the fandom. She received her vision during a low point in her life.
She's a black sheep.
RAZOR
"Raised by the Wolves" by Falling in Reverse
He got his vision at a low point in his life.
A human boy raise by the wolves can make him a black sheep in both societies.
BEIDOU
She's powerful and got her vision at after a display of power.
KEQING
She got a vision, she uses it as a tool. Definitly smart.
KUJO SARA
Loyal to the shogun, powerful, and got her vision at a low point.
Tengu raised and living amongst the humans, black sheep.
SHINOBU
Clearly the person with actual power in the Arrataki gang. Got her vision while running away, so definitly a low point. Lawyer, so smart.
Black sheep of her family.
YAE MIKU'S VISION IS LIKELY A FAKE SO...
DORI
Smart, got her vision at a low point.
CYNO
Powerful, vision is a tool.
CONCLUSION...
Power, brains and the use of the vision as tools for their jobs was something I had in mind for most electro characters. However, there were two other traits that is common amongst some them that you guys see me call out.
Getting the vision at a low point in life.
Being a black sheep. They're weird. They're a weirdo. They don't fit in, they don't want to fit in, have you ever seen them without their stupid hat on? That's wierd.
I have a feeling that electro in Genshin could also be a symbol of hope. A light in the dark tunnel. You're lost in a storm and you can't see where you need to go, and then lightning illuminates the path for you.
In terms of the black sheep pattern, I feel it creates a parallel with Ei.
Isolation.
However, while Ei isolated herself voluntarily due to her grief, the reason's for the vision holders were things they could not control.
Shinobu while not exactly isolated, was just not interested in being a shrine maiden, and being forced into that role just made her detest it more.
Fischl's interest in fantasy novels resulted in her being isolated from her peers, causing her to retreat into her safe-space, creating a cycle that will take time and patience to break her out of.
Razor didn't ask to be raised by wolves, they took him in 'cause he's a child who would otherwise die in the wilderness, and he had absolutely no say in how he was raised.
Sara, is a non-human living amongst humans. Even Itto, with all his human friends and family wanted get another oni to be his friend.
So yeah, dendro's next.
This one was a teensy bit tricky for me.

I feel like Itto is more afraid of Sara than the Raiden Shogun.
When it thunders, Itto isn’t afraid struck by lightning, even saying “go ahead strike me down.”
In the Rock n Roll event he is scared that he bothers Sara too much, he be struck down by her lightning.

REMATCH
ARATAKI ITTO x KUJO SARA
main m.list
────────────────────────────────
Walking through the busy and crowded city, a certain Tengu General came to stop upon seeing the horrendous sight. Papers on the bulletin board had been ripped into tiny pieces, it would take years and decades to even glue them all back together. It was as if a five year old had a tantrum because it's mother wouldn't buy the toy it wanted.
The General had an idea of who the perpetrator was, it wasn't that hard to figure out considering the marks he left while ripping those papers off. Not to mention a tiny note signed with "The One and Oni".
How childish he is.
The raven-haired tengu picked up the small note,
"HEY HEY, Kujou Chicken!! As you can see I did INDEED vandalise the bulletin board AGAIN. And this time I didn't hold back! Listen here Kujou Tengu, if you don't want me to vandalise your precious bulletin boards anymore then meet me at THAT spot. EVENING. I'll wait, we'll have our fated rematch. FAIR AND SQUARE. Unless you're too much of a chicken? HAHA pwok pwok! Kujou Chicken!!!"
– The One and Oni.
Kujou Sara sighed out of exhaustion. She wondered if this certain red Oni had ever given up in his life, at least once. Kujou Sara didn't wanna waste her precious evening tending to a feral Oni. But she also didn't want any more bulletin boards being vandalized. She had no choice, one might say.
Now or never Sara, now or never.
"You… You destroyed the bulletin board just so we could have an Onikabuto match…?" A baffled Sara muttered. "Well yeah! I originally wanted to have that duel rematch with you but I figured an Onikabuto match would be a better option,"
What the hell was she hearing? Kujou Sara had prepared herself to battle an Oni, not have the beetles fight each other. She certainly didn't expect the One and Oni to change his mind like that.
"So, Kujou Chicken… Are you ready to lose or what— hey! hey—! Where's your Onikabuto?!" Itto screamed, seemingly offended that the General hadn't prepared herself an Onikabuto beforehand.
Sara deadpanned, had he not realized his mistake? "Perhaps you forgot to state an Onikabuto match rather than a duel? I was ready to fight you. Not have Onikabutos fighting." The raven-haired female crossed her arms.
Baffled by his miscalculation, Itto was quick to urge the Tengu to search for an Onikabuto.
Oh Archons.
A few hours later, Sara had finally found an Onikabuto. She didn't care if it was small, big, or even colorful. She just wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible.
"Haha! Took you long enough! Now let's see who's gonna be the champion. Loser has to treat the winner to ramen!" The Oni smiled ear-to-ear.
"From what I recall, you didn't put any circumstances into this match." Sara raised her eyebrow. Does this man never stick to one plan?
"Uh— well, oops! Guess I forgot to tell you, haha! Now c'mon, let's get this match started."
Sara sighed, she regretted agreeing to this.
Give me a break.
There's certainly a lot of surprises today.
Kujou Sara did not expect the battle to turn out like this. "Itto five, Kujou Tengu zero. Haha! I'm on a roll today!" Itto laughed at the female's suffering.
It was supposed to be only one round, nothing more than that. But when Itto won in the first round, Sara couldn't help but get annoyed. He was being so cocky about his victory that it boiled the Tengu's blood. She didn't want to lose to that Oni, yet… she lost a total of five times.
She's given up at this point, if she loses even more that's gonna be 1000 mora wasted on ramen for the Oni.
"Alright, Arataki Itto. You win…" Sara sighed defeatedly. Smiling at himself, Itto stood proudly. "Woohoo! That's five ramen Kujou Tengu!”
"... Fine. Now c'mon." Sara muttered as she was ready to take her leave. She shouldn't have agreed to this. Dammit.
"Five Tonkatsu Ramen please." Sara ordered, the waiter questioned why THE General Tengu would order such large amounts of ramen. Was she that hungry?
Nonetheless, the waiter nodded and quickly made those Tonkatsu Ramen.
Sighing to herself for the 8th time today, she went back to where the Oni was patiently sitting. They sat in an awkward silence, both not knowing what to do while waiting for the food to be made.
"Hey! You know— it's unlikely for me to finish five ramen at once. How about you take two?" Itto suddenly suggested.
Kujou Sara was taken aback. Had he let his pride down for her? Was he pitying her because she lost five times to him? How humiliating…
"If you're pitying me, then don't bother. I don't need—"
"Who said I was pitying you?!" Itto shouted. Once again, Sara was taken aback. Why the hell is he screaming?! "I just thought you might be hungry, we battled for almost the whole day didn't we? And you know, even the great Oni can't finish five ramen by himself." He calmly explained.
There were surely a lot of unexpected events today. Sara was surprised at how sincere he sounded. His smile was soft and so gentle. It was something she never saw, something didn't expect to ever see.
Subconsciously smiling, she felt at ease. Maybe accepting this match wasn't as bad as she thought it was. Maybe she was glad she agreed.
