No one ever talks about how Sophie starts a new life in the Lost Cities and has to figure out all over again things like what her favorite food and her favorite animal are.

i would’ve accepted a book 9.5 if it had been from marella’s pov and started where stellarlune ended (like unlocked did with legacy).

i brought this up a few weeks ago with my younger sibling, and i still stand by it- the whole idea of a live action movie for a series where so many of the components would either cost way too much and look like crap or just flatout be impossible to do is not very compelling. the problem is is that the plans for the movie is already underway, and i wouldn’t know the first thing about getting a say in it- what i’m saying is this, more or less: if disney does this right (which i very highly doubt that they will) good on them, but i will not be satisfied :(
Ok so ik that they r like already making a keeper movie, (possibly- how longs has the wait been so far?) but am I the only one who thinks it would b waaayy better as like an animated show??
Like hear me out like half the book’s dialogue happens telepathically, so either the movie just has a bunch of rly random moments where the characters start staring at each other or they do like a weird echoey sound effect 2 make it sound like it’s in their heads. Neither sounds good 2 me
Also Ik that cgi is like rly good now, but I still live in constant fear of like a rly cursed looking cgi Sander (and Ro, and Calla, and any other non elf character) plus just a lot of things like vanishing and Sophie’s jacked inflicting would translate better as like a 2d animation
Last thing I wanna say is, when u make a book in2 a movie, u gotta cut stuff out- that’s just how it works. No1 wants 2 watch a 4 hour movie. But I just feel like there is 2 much stuff that’s 2 important 2 cut out. I feel that way about a lot of books. That’s why I’m happy they’re making Percy Jackson in2 a show, and why I think they should do the same with keeper

yapping session time!!
in my unrealistic fantasies, where kotlc and tlos both get live actions that are made in simultaneous timeframes, dex dizznee and conner bailey are played by the same person.
i do think that they would also be killer as animated series, though. these book universes are both magical asf, and I wouldn’t be surprised if either (or both) went this route.
it’s probably just the strawberry blond hair and blue eyes, but like hear me out
Tumblr media
like come on. they’re like basically the same person, looks-wise. you can’t even say that one author copied the other since they were both published within like, three months of each other
idk who, but if it was possible to child star in two long ass tv series/movie sagas at the same time, they could totally be played by the same personnn
it’s extremely illogical and quite possibly impossible, but a girl can dream, right? (I would be fangirling over both 🎀)
yapping session over

politely, to the people in the kotlc fandom complaining about the new post abt keefe befriending an animal and saying they're too old for this: yes. you are. this book series is intended for 6th graders who *do* care about what animal he'll be befriending. you are not the target audience.
i love this series, i'll finish it. but i'm more than aware that as an adult, it's not for me. it's not for you. take the books as they are, targetted at tweens.

I definitely agree and on a poll a while back that I made the fandom voted that they’d prefer an animated series to a live action movie, but honestly I’ll take anything we can get at this point 😭
tbh the kotlc movie rlly should be animated

Reasons why I want a kotlc adaption to be animated
They won’t have to deal with 21 year olds playing a 14 year olds
The fantasy elements would look better and more natural
I want to make an abridged series and that’s alot easier with animation than live action.

sometimes i think about keeper of the lost cities (it is my special interest) and go “holy shit how is this a middle grade series”
so here is an incomplete list of things that happen in kotlc that would get a kotlc movie’s rating moved to R (read at your own risk).
kidnapping
torture
horse copulation
graphic violence
graphic birth
unspecified but apparently flavorful cursing
human experimentation
body horror
very detailed depictions of almost-deadly allergic reactions
non-consensual drugging. a lot of it. of CHILDREN
and here is a list of things that i think the US government would hate about kotlc
criticism of government and discussion of how one should handle being in a position of power (you should not enjoy being powerful)
elfin society has a eugenics problem and this is consistently criticized
queer coding isn’t even coding atp marella is GAY gay
and finally, criticisms i have of kotlc.
weird eurocentric beauty standards
tam and linh. great characters. CONSTANTLY fetishized bc they’re asian. sophie calls them k-pop idols, anime characters, etc. from what i can tell, though, they’re vietnamese. LET THEM BE VIETNAMESE WITHOUT COMPARING THEM TO EVERY EAST ASIAN STEREOTYPE
everyone is thin. LITERALLY EVERYONE. why is everyone thin and why does thin equal beautiful. shannon messenger explain your biases challenge
there are SO many poc in the books, but elf culture is shown as a monolith. show the cultural nuances that come from before humans and elves separated. i want to see the human influences in their clothing, hairstyles, accents, vernacular. have elves who have historically lived in china wearing something similar to hanfu. give tam and linh ao dai. give me a nigerian elf with fulani braids. give me culture through style and bodies and voices and music. i want to see it. it’s beautiful and it is NOT shown enough
dex needs more page time.
alden and della are NOT criticized enough. they are complicit. they are part of the problem in the lost cities. they are not all bad, but they are not all good either. CRITICIZE THEM, SHANNON.

ALDEN VACKER WAS HORRIBLE FOR THIS
Ok, listen...........is anyone going to talk about one of the if the if not the most disturbing thing in KOTLC?
I've seen only a few posts talking about this, and every time I think about it, I feel so odd about it. It's one of the most depressing things in the series. And almost everyone glosses over it.
What is it?
It's the fact that Sophie chose to erase her family's memories of her, their whole life, and have them be given new memories and start elsewhere.
Do you know how messed up this is?
Sophie's family had a life. They had friends. They had a house and a social circle and an entire damn life in San Diego, and all of their memories are just wiped and they move to another place because of one decision.
They don't have any autonomy in the say. The elves don't give them any. They don't explain what happened, they don't tell them anything.
No, instead they follow the rushed, not properly thought over decision of an immature, terrified twelve year old girl who was forced to leave her entire home and life behind. Hell, when I was younger and closer to Sophie's age
What the absolute fuck.
Now, DO NOT THINK for a SECOND that I am blaming Sophie here. As I said, she was a terrified, panicked, immature TWELVE YEAR OLD who was forced to leave her entire home, life and FAMILY behind. If I had to that at twelve........well, I'm not as brave as Sophie.
I'm not blaming Sophie. I'm not blaming that scared twelve year old.
I'm blaming Alden. I'm blaming the Washers. I'm blaming the Council and all the fucking ADULTS who AGREED TO THIS.
Alden should NEVER have suggested wiping their memories. He shouldn't have entertained the thought for even a second.
He should have sat Sophie down and explained all the consequences of this decision. He should have told Sophie that mourning the loss of a daughter was infinitely better than having all their memories wiped and their lives ripped away with absolutely no fucking autonomy in that. He should have firmly refused to do that, no matter how much Sophie begged and cried and yelled and pleaded.
Instead...........he did it.
Alden isn't even that good. He ripped away the lives of three whole humans like they were nothing more than savage animals. His morality is not white, it's gray.
He might be a good father figure to his children and Sophie, but let me tell you, this was the one thing that made me hate his guts. Alden pros can harp on all they like, but no KOTLC fan should ever forget this.
(Amy should've hated him. She should've been traumatised and crying from remembering everything. Amy, my poor girl.)

MAKE KOTLC ANIMATED
I’m so apprehensive towards the Keeper of the Lost Cities movie, because how??? I think the first book could adapt somewhat well to film, but Sophie spends a lot of time at school, and I don’t think people who aren’t fans of the books will want to watch that.
But then there’s the issue of every book after that. You’d have to cut down so much, and even then you’d end up with eight and a half Lord of the Rings films, plus an Oppenheimer for Flashback. And although that could be an epic series, it’s unlikely that the producers will get greenlit for every single book, and it’ll be a case of The Mortal Instruments or something.
I am BEGGING the producers to PLEASE turn KotLC into an animated series. Episodic story-structure is much more forgiving than a film arc when it comes to cutting things out, and I know that Shannon says it’s not an episodic story, but you could easily end an episode the exact same way she ends chapters. Plus, her cliffhangers would also translate well to television. With animation, you can design the world and the abilities of the characters much better than with CGI, and it’s a little more cost effective because you wouldn’t have to use a volume stage. Also, working with animation decreases the chances of actors getting brutally harassed because they look different from the characters in the books, like what happened with Percy Jackson (God bless Leah). Also, Shannon comes from an art and screenwriting background, so she might be able to be involved with the process of adapting the novels a little more than if it was a traditional film.
Does anyone else feel similarly?
